Motion in a straight line

Motion along a straight line means any motion that is only in one direction, thus here the motion cant have two components, it could be referred to as motion of any point object on any one coordinate, whether it be x, y or z. The straight line motion is also called the rectilinear motion. The word motion in a straight line implies that the motion has to be in a straight line or a one-dimensional motion, it couldnt be a curve or a turn. The real aspect of this study is to build up the basis of one dimensional motion which could be further exceeded to two-dimensional motion( motion in a plane) and then to threedimensional motion ( motion in space). It is not just for basis but it applies to real world objects too, pretty much everything but that everything should move in a straight line and should have a speed less than that of light, to understand this by an example we could imagine the motion of a car on a straight road, thus then the car could be called a point object which is on a straight line. Anything that covers a distance larger than its own size and does not have its own effect could be called as a point object for example A rolling ball could be considered as a point object but a spinning top cant be considered as a point object. Motion doesnt occur magically, a force is needed to cause motion of an object, but in Kinematics, we only study the motion of the objects without the cause. This is kinematics, thus force shall be discussed in later chapters. The moving object is either a particle (by which we mean a point-like object such as an electron) or an object that moves like a particle (such that every portion moves in the same direction and at the same rate). A stiff pig slipping down a straight playground slide might be considered to be moving like a particle; however, tumbling tumbleweed would not. Thus a breath-taking conclusion would be that particles are point objects and vice versa. Motion deals with distance, displacement, speed, velocity and acceleration, understanding these basic concepts lets us to look into the motion of an object. DISPLACEMENT & POSITION To understand the motion one has to defined the view with which he will look at the problem to define the view means to take axis or a set of axis so that the problem could be easily worked out. Since in this chapter we are only going to study the motion of an object in a straight line then we will need only one axis for our convenience we would choose the easiest of all the X-axis, which is just a simple straight

horizontal line and has numbers from negative infinity to positive infinity, and somewhere exactly in the middle comes zero, which is called as the reference point also called the origin, and all distances and displacements are measure from this point. Now on the number line if anything goes to the right hand side then it is considered to be in the positive direction and anything to the left is the negative. The coordinate system i.e. our axis or set of axis along with a clock (i.e. Time) constitute a Frame of reference. If the time goes on and any one of the coordinate of the object changes then it is said to be in motion. The motion could seem different from different views i.e. from different frame of references for example we may now be sitting down and thus are at rest, but we say that we are at rest with respect a frame of reference joined to the earth but if any person would watch us from space then we would seem in motion as the Earth has its own spin and other astronomical motions. Thus, we get are new definition of motion the simplest and the best: Motion is change in position of an object with time Now since we are done defining the view of how to look at objects in motion now we will define some motion related terms, Position of an object means where the object or particle is at in the space from the reference point, since as here we only are considering a one-dimensional motion
