INTRODUCTION TO THE INTERNET

7|Page

What is the internet?

The internet is a network of computers that are connected to each other all possible
for people throughout the world to communicate with each other and share a lot of
information. Information in the form of pictures, written and voice massages can
be shared on the internet no matter the distance between the people involved.
People in Accra can communicate and share information with other people in
America, Asia, Middle East, Europe and Australia. The internet therefore connects
computer in our individual homes, in businesses, school and government
institutions.

SOME FEATURES OF THE INTERNET.

1. No control: there is any control on the use of the internet. It is difficult for
someone to exercise control over the use of the internet.
2. No boundaries: there are any boundaries in the use of the internet. People
far and near can communicate with each other and share information on the
internet.
3. Difficult to shut down: the internet is a network that is difficult to shut
down. At every minute there is someone using the internet.
4. No single owner: there is a single owner of the internet. On one person or
company can say that they own the internet.
5. Accessible to everyone: the internet is accessible to everyone for as long as
the person has the equipment and service necessary to access the internet.

SOME INTERNET CONCEPTS

8|Page

Servers: these are bigger capacity computers with information that are made
available for others to use. These servers may be owned by internet services
providers, educational institutions and large commercial institutions.
Client computers: the computers in a network such as the internet that access
(take or use) information from servers is called client computers.
Online: a computer is online if it is connected to other computers in a network
such as the internet.
Offline: a computer in a network is offline when it loses the connection to other
computers in a network.
Internet service provider (ISP)
Internet service providers are companies that provide internet services at a fee.
They make it possible for people who want to connect to the internet to get internet
service at a fee.

WORLD WIDE WEB (WWW)

The World Wide Web is a means of sending and receiving information on the
internet in the form of pictures and other graphic formats. The World Wide Web
makes it possible for video, sound and a lot of information in high quality, pictures
to be exchanged over the internet. This is done through the web browser such as
the Microsoft browser or the navigator browser.
Web Browser: it is a program used to view information on the World Wide Web.
The program makes it possible for pictures, video and sounds to be viewed and
heard over the internet. The internet explorer and the Netscape navigator are some
of the most commonly used web browsers.
E Mail: mail is the short form of Electronic Mail. It is a means of exchanging
information through the internet. You may take the e mail to be a faster way of
sending and receiving letters through the internet.

9|Page

Local Area Network (LAN): This refers to two or more (but usually a small
number of computers) connected to each other within a small area. The area may
be a small room or a building.
Wide Area Network (WAN): A Wide Area Network is a connection between two
or more Local Area Networks. The distance between such connected networks is
often very big. The internet is an example of a wide Area Network.

EXERCISE
1. What is the difference between local area network and wide area network?

2. Name some of the features of the internet.

.
3. The internet connects computers a cross the world and makes it easy for
people to communicate over long distances cheaply. Is this statement true or
false?
4. What is the difference between a server and a client computer?

..

a. ISP
b. IP
c. LAN
d. WWW
e. WAN

GROUP ACTIVITY:
1. Put yourselves in groups of five, choose on opposing group and organize a
competition on the following question:
a. What are the features of the internet?
b. Name some internet concepts.
2. Visit the internet (with your teacher) and find out the sort of things you can
find on it.
How the internet works: the internet works through the communication of between
various servers and clients for host computer.
Serves: are computers and software that are continuously connected to the internet
that provide access to their files and programs. Servers are often very powerful
with the capacity of holding huge amount of data to be accessed by others.
Client computers: are computers and software programs that access data or
information on a server.
Most often, we get onto the internet through other peoples server. They may be
our internet service provider, our school or place of work. Each server is given an
IP address. IP is the short form of Internet Protocol. The IP address is a set of
numbers that shows the exact location on a network. So if you get onto the internet
through the server of Ghana Telecom, your location can be traced to the servers of
Ghana Telecom.
The IP address may also be presented in the form of a name. For example
www.mazi computer.org. This is called a domain name.
11 | P a g e

The following steps explain how the inter works.

1. When information is exchanged on the internet, the message sent out is
broken up into several pieces of the same size called packets.
2. Each packet is given a name showing where the information (packet) is
coming from and where it is going. The name also shows where a particular
piece fits in the packets that are sent out.
3. Each of the packets takes the most suitable route until they all get to their
final destination. Sending and receiving of packets (information bits) over
the internet is done through an internet software called Transmission control
Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. When a message is sent out a route choose the most efficient rout to be used
in sending the information or packet.
When the entire packet sent arrives at their final destination, they are put together
again in their original from and available for use. When there are errors in the
packet sent or some packets get delayed, a message is sent to the computer that
sent the packet to resent the packet. The packets are all put together only when all
packets are received.

Internet equipment needed

The types of equipment depends on what the internet us to be used for. The
following are some of the basic equipment that may needed to make good use of
the internet.
1. A set of computer with speakers to ensure that sounds can be played.
2. A modem is necessary. This may be an internal modem already installed in
the computer or an external modem to be attached to the computer.
3. A telephone line is necessary if the internet is to be accessed through the
telephone.
4. A printer is used in printing out information from the internet.

12 | P a g e

EXERCISE
1. When information is sent out on the internet, it is broken into some smaller
bits. What is the name given to the small bits?

2. What does the abbreviation TCP/IP stand for?

.
3. What is router?

.
4. List three equipments needed in order to use the internet.

for the internet.
USES OF THE INTERNET.
The internet has come to change our lives. It has changed the way we do a lot of
things. The following are some of the uses of the internet.
Find information: The web is like a huge encyclopedia of information. There is
information on almost everything and the internet depending on whether we know
how to look for the information.
There are several types of encyclopedia and the internet form which we can get
information we want. Some of the encyclopedias found on the internet are:
www.britanmca.com
ww.encarta.com
Communicate with people all over the world: the e - mail makes it possible for us
to communicate faster and cheaper using the internet. The e mail has reduced our
dependence on normal letters that have to post through the mail box.
Make friends: The internet makes it easier for us to make friends. The are several
websites where people meet and make friends.
A place for holding discussion: the internet and the World Wide Web has created a
place for people to hold discussions about topics and issues of national and even
global importance.
A place to have fun: There are several games on the internet that we can play to
have fun. We can also watch TV programmes over the internet.
Education: The inter4net is a source of material for educating ourselves. A part
from, the huge amount of teaching and learning materials available for free, there
14 | P a g e

are also schools that teach over the internet. This is called online distance
education.
Read news: several news companies now put some of their news on the internet.
We can read news from CNN, BBC, Ghana Broad Casting Corporation, TV3,
Ghana web and a lot more on the internet.
Download software: a lot of softwares are available on the internet to be
downloaded for free. There are also some that have to be paid for.
Buy and sell items: Buying and selling of items on the internet is getting bigger
and bigger. We buy almost everything on the internet from building to clothing to
books. www.amazon.com is one of the main websites where gods are bought and
sold.
The E mail: e mail is the short form of Electronic Mail. It is the means of
sending messages form one computer to another over the internet. E Mail has
made communication a lot easier and cheaper.

THINGS NEEDED TO BE ABLE TO USE THE E MAIL.

E Mail account: An e mail account is obtained from an internet service
provider (ISP) just as we have post boxes from the post office. The internet service
provider will give us a USENAME and a PASSWARD or we may be asked to
select our username and password. This is similar to obtaining a post office box
with a key. They password is only known to owner of the e mail account to
prevent other people from getting into our account to read our e mails. You
always need your username and password to be able to download and read your e
mail. E Mail accounts can be obtained free from such companies as Yahoo!,
Hotmail, America online and Google.
E Mail Address: In order to be able to send and receive e mail, we have an e
mail address. An e mail address has three parts. We shall use the address below
to learn about three parts of an e mail address.
Mazi.ken @ computersghana.org.

15 | P a g e

The first part is the user name: Mazi.ken

The second part is at sign: @
The third part is domain name: mazi computers Ghana.org.
(The domain name is the name of the computer to which the e mail is sent)
Sending and e mail: Every e mail has a header. Some headers are detailed but
others have only a few information. The following are some of the information.
The following are some of the information that may be found in an e mail header.
From: (the address of the sender)
To : (address of the person to whom the e mail is sent)
Subject: (title or what the e mail is about)
Cc: (address of other people whom copies of the e mail is to be sent).
The header is followed by the mail body of the e mail where the message to be
sent is typed. After the message has been typed, the sent button is pressed to send
the message. The illustrations below show some windows of e mails to be sent
out.

The World Wide Web: The World Wide Web is a means of exchanging
information in the form of pictures, sounds, video, animation and text on the
internet. It is sometimes referred to simply as the web.
The World Wide Web is different from the internet. The internet is the network of
physical computers and other accessories such as modem, cables, phone line,
satellites etc. that are connected to each other enable communication to be
exchanged among the connected computers.
World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners Lee, a software engineer in
1991.
Dates sent over the internet are specially formatted in a computer language called
HTML (Hyper Text Mark up Language).
You need a web browser to be able to read information on the web.

USES OF THE WORLD WIDE WEB

The use of the World Wide Web today is almost endless. A short list of some of
the uses is given below.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

Searching for information.

For teaching and learning
For entertainment.
Meeting people.
Buying and selling things.
Sharing experiences / information.

Some problems in the use of the internet and the World Wide Web: the internet
and the World Wide Web are very useful but there are some problems that arise in
the use of the World Wide Web.

18 | P a g e

Internet fraud: people use the internet to cheat and defraud others of their
properties. A lot of people have lost money to fraudsters on the internet.
Showing of Inappropriate material: Sometimes materials that are not suitable for
children such as pornography may be placed on the internet. Violent materials
from criminals can also be on the internet and shown to children.
Physical danger: A person who met on the internet may deceive a child for them to
meet in person. Such as stranger may harm the child. A lot of children have been
molested by strangers they meet on the internet.
Unwanted e mails and advertisement: Unwanted e mails are called span.
People send out loads and loads of unwanted e mails and other materials over the
internet. This creates a lot of inconveniences for the receivers.
Deception: People may be deceived into giving out their identity over the internet.
Fraudster may use such stolen identities for criminal activities.
Virus: Viruses are intentionally spread on the internet to disrupt and damage other

network and obey them.
2. Dont send someone large files they didnt request, dont send e mail
enmesh (spamming) .
3. Dont SHOUT (as anything typed in all capital letters appears).
4. Dont use bad, rude or disrespectful language at any time.
5. Do be aware of potential differences in cultures internationally.
6. Dont camp out: This means dont log in and just leave your connection idle
if youve not using it. Sign off and free up one of your providers modems
for someone else to use. While many internet services provide users with
unlimited internet access, this generally means unlimited use not idle
access.
