The Fuel + Recovery Balance Training System (BTS) delivers a broad spectrum of fundamental sports nutrition supplements to assist the athlete to meet the challenge at every training session. For the athlete who is looking to combine nutrient intake to the best effect, the Fuel + Recovery BTS makes it easier to make the right nutrition choices.

UNDERSTANDING THE TRAINING DYNAMICS


Regular physical training requires careful planning to ensure that the positive benets outweigh any negative impact. Injury and illness can ruin the best intentions, if athletes fail to allow for sufcient recovery periods between training sessions, and fail to pay attention to proper nutrition. Athletes who aim to increase body size and their strength capacity will frequently train as much as 4-6 days per week. With such high demands on the body, close attention to nutrition is essential. The structure of the individual athletes training programme will vary considerably, but often involve a combination of both cardiovascular training to create an increase in heart and lung capacity (aerobic tness) and resistance training, which encourages lean muscle development and strength. When gains in lean muscle tissue are paramount, resistance training will dominate. A well-designed training plan should target specic aspects of strength and tness and cycle workloads, leaving adequate periods of rest, during which other parts of the body can be worked. The rest period is crucial to enable the body to carry out repair to damaged muscle tissue and slowly become tter and stronger. For committed athletes who train multiple times a week and often per day, their training programme structure is critical to ensure maximal gain and avoid injury.

SPORTS NUTRITION AND The FUEL + RECOVERY System


Catabolism (Catabolic Phase) The process by which complex substances are reduced to their simple precursors. Often accompanied by the release of energy to fuel the body. i.e. The breakdown of muscle for energy.
During each training session, the body enters into a catabolic phase, in which the body utilises internal stores of carbohydrate, protein and fat energy to fuel exercise and meet the increased demand for energy. With this in mind, the athletes priority should be to:  Maximise carbohydrate and amino acids (protein) availability prior to beginning exercise. This helps to delay the onset of catabolism and ensures that 100% effort can be delivered at each training session  Halt the catabolic effect quickly after exercise stops. Consuming a supplement high in both carbohydrates and protein is ideal and should be taken on board as soon as possible. Providing adequate nutrients at this stage is central to optimal recovery  Address the additional demands created by their individual training programme throughout the day by following a systematic, wellbalanced and tailored nutrition plan When gains in muscle tissue and strength are a priority, the athlete must understand the mechanism behind muscle growth. Muscle tissue is the bodys store of protein. Dietary protein is broken down into smaller sub-units called amino acids. Those amino acids that are not immediately required by the body are reassembled and stored in the form of muscle tissue. This muscle tissue can be called upon at any time to provide the body with amino acids for the synthesis of the new proteins such as hormones, enzymes or structural tissue, when dietary intake is insufcient. These dynamics highlight the need for an excellent dietary intake of protein, both to build muscle tissue and reduce the need to breakdown existing muscle tissue.

Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC)

GLUtaMINE
If the dietary intake is inadequate, increased muscle breakdown, which can occur during intense exercise, will result in the release of the amino acid Glutamine (from muscle tissue) into the circulation to provide energy and a source of free nitrogen. Increased Glutamine during exercise is required to fuel immune cells, detoxify the body and for the formation of required proteins and glycogen. Note: Glutamine makes up approximately 60% of your dry muscle weight, therefore it makes sense that supplementation may result in an increase in muscle tissue. Also Glutamine may assist in the transportation of the other amino acids into the muscle. Glutamine intake studies have shown that athletes who supplement with Glutamine enhance their performance and gain muscle. Studies are based on 0.2kg/kg/day of supplemental Glutamine. Best times for supplementation is upon rising, before training, after training and before bed.

Looking more closely at the bodys need for protein during exercise, it is clear that some amino acids are needed in greater amounts than others. Achieving the correct amino acid prole means consuming a varied intake of protein rich foods. The changing demand for amino acids depends upon the roles they play within the body. If one particular amino acid is drained from the pool of free amino acids circulating within the body, the formation of new proteins will be adversely affected. Of all the amino acids, the Branched Chain Amino Acids (Isoleucine, Leucine and Valine), are particularly important, given their vital role in muscle repair and recovery.
