At Last: You Can Get Affordable Health Insurance Deadline: March 31st !!

All Essential Health Benefits are Covered! The Affordable Care Act requires all health plans to offer a comprehensive package of items and services, known as essential health benefits: (1) Ambulatory care (doctor visits) (2) Emergency services (3) Hospitalization (4) Maternity and newborn care (5) Mental health and substance abuse disorder services, including behavioral health treatment (6) Prescription drugs (7) Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices (e.g. occupational and physical therapy) (8) Laboratory services (9) Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management (10) Pediatric services, including dental and vision care.

If you are one of the 48 million uninsured Americans you can now get health coverage through the Affordable Care Act (Obama Care.). The law provides many new benefits: (1) Subsidies to reduce most premiums. (2) Insurance cant be denied because of pre-existing conditions. (3) No limits on annual benefits. (4) Children can remain on parents insurance up to age 26. (5) No co-pays on preventative services (like check-ups). (6) Gives Medicare beneficiaries access to new benefits like free preventive care and savings on prescription drugs. The Health Care Marketplace: What is It? By March 31, 2014, everyone must either (1) sign up for health coverage, (2) obtain an exemption, or (3) pay a penalty when filing your taxes. Go to the Marketplace Exchange (www.healthcare.gov) where you can compare health insurance plans and purchase one.
***Note: If you already have insurance (through work, Medicare, Tricare, etc.) and you are satisfied with it, you do not need to apply for health insurance in the Marketplace.

Medicaid Expansion and Alabamians The Affordable Care Act allows states to expand their Medicaid program to cover more people. Alabama elected not to expand Medicaid. But you should still apply to the Marketplace in order be determined eligible for Medicaid or a lower cost health plan option. Important Dates- Act Now! March 31, 2014: Open Enrollment. After March 31, you can only enroll due to a qualifying event (like losing your job, gaining a dependent or moving out of state). If you do not purchase insurance by March 31, you will have to pay a penalty. The next annual open enrollment period is November 15, 2014 January 15, 2015.
