FB Localization

Exam Description:
This exam is preformed to confirm the presence of a Foreign Body, to assess the nature of the FB, to localize it, and to assist in its removal. ontrast !usually "astrografin# is sometimes used to confirm the presence of a FB, ho$ever a scout radiograph should al$ays %e ta&en first. 'ince there are several $ays that a FB can %e introduced !aspiration, s$allo$ing, penetration, or introduction into a natural orifice# into a patient, $e have different radiographic procedures in order to %etter visualize them. For an (spirated o%)ect, $e $ill chec&* radiograph from the nasopharynx to the diaphragm and +nspiration*Expiration radiographs $ill %e ta&en. For a '$allo$ed o%)ect, $e $ill radiograph from the nasopharynx to the anus. +f the o%)ect is smooth, $e $ill radiograph it every ,- hours. +f the o%)ect is sharp, $e $ill radiograph it more often and more closely. The positions that $e $ould use to radiograph a s$allo$ed o%)ect include an .(/ esophagus and an (0 of the stomach area. For a 0enetrating FB o%)ect $e $ill place the . perpendicular to the entrance of the foreign %ody $here $e $ill also place a lead mar&er, and $e $ill then ta&e radiographs of the FB in (0*0( and Lateral positions in order to find the location of the FB. For a FB that has %een introduced into a natural orifice, $e should ma&e consideration. +nfants seem to put everything in their mouth so FB is fre1uently aspirated*s$allo$ed. (dults usually have FB o%)ects of %ones, food or dentures. raftsmen $ho hold things in their mouth and s$allo$ them usually aspirate and s$allo$ needles nails etc. 2ental patients often ingest and insert foreign %odies. +n all of these cases $e need to use localization techni1ues to find the FB and assist in its removal if necessary.

Technologist .esponsi%ilities:
These responsi%ilities $ould include verifying the patient and the procedure orders from the supervising physician. +t is also the technologists3 responsi%ility to inform the patient a%out the exam and the ris&s that are involved. They must ma&e sure that the patient has %een properly attired for the exam and ma&e sure that they have follo$ed any prepping necessary. Before the exam %egins they must also o%tain a complete patient history. (fter completing this, they should then inform the patient of $hat side effects to expect or loo& for pertaining to the contrast material etc. Then after the contrast is administered and or the instructions given, the Technologist should o%serve the patient for reactions to medium during and after the procedure in case of allergy or if the patient has difficulty follo$ing instructions during the procedure. They $ill then ta&e the re1uired radiographs and assist if necessary in the removal of the o%)ect.
