Windows 8 provides upgrade paths from Windows 7 Service Pack 1, Windows Vista and Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 or higher.

Important Note:
Not all Windows 8 features may be available on all Windows 7 PCs. Your system may require additional hardware, software, firmware, and/or a BIOS upgrade to install and run Windows 8. The required drivers, BIOS and firmware will be available on the Fujitsu America support website.

Upgrade Installation
During an upgrade, existing user settings are retained, as well as installed applications. If you perform a clean installation, the operating system files are installed in a new folder, and you must reinstall all of your applications and reset user preferences, such as desktop and application settings.

Windows 8 Upgrade Options o Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic and Windows 7 Home Premium can upgrade to Windows 8 while maintaining their existing Windows settings, applications and personal files like photos, movies and documents. o Windows 8 Pro is available to those users running Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate. Again, upgrading will allow you to keep all your files and apps. o Windows 8 Enterprise (which typically is only available to Corporations with active Volume license and Software Assurance subscribers) is available via upgrade to Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Enterprise installs. o Windows Vista (without SP1 installed) users can upgrade to Windows 8, however, only personal files (data only) will be kept through the upgrade. Windows Vista with SP1 personal files and system settings will be also maintained through the upgrade. o Users with Windows XP SP3 or higher will be able to upgrade to Windows 8, however, only personal files (data only) will be available after the install.

Non-Supported Windows 8 Upgrade Options o Cross-language installations are not supported if you plan to keep any, apps or Windows settings. o Cross architecture upgrades 32-bit to 64-bit. You will need to do a clean wipe and install. o Upgrading from XP SP3 or higher is not supported if you plan to keep any apps and Windows settings. It allows keeping only personal files. o Upgrading from Vista is not supported if you plan to keep any apps and Windows settings. It allows keeping only personal files. o Upgrading from Vista SP1 is not supported if you plan to keep any apps. It allows keeping only Windows settings and personal files. o Cross firmware upgrades BIOS to UEFI. You will need to do a clean wipe and install.

Clean Install
You need to choose a clean installation of Windows 8 in the following cases

No operating system is installed on the computer. The installed operating system does not support an upgrade to Windows 8. A clean installation is preferred.

The most basic advantage of a clean installation is that all of your systems can begin with the same configuration. All applications, files, and settings are reset. You can use a single disk image or answer file to make sure that all of the desktops in your organization are standardized. In this way, you can avoid many of the support problems that are caused by irregular configurations.

Windows 8 Requirements and Limitations for Specific Features

DVD Playback DVD playback was supported by Windows 7 and is no longer possible with Windows 8 without additional software which can be acquired from a thirdparty. Alternatively, you can obtain the Windows 8 Media Center Pack or the Windows 8 Pro Pack post upgrade. Both Packs include Windows Media Center, including the ability to play DVDs.

Secure Boot and Measured Boot Are both new features in Windows 8 and is not supported.

Gadgets Windows 8 no longer supports Desktop Gadgets (e.g. Weather and Clock). This feature is now implemented via live tiles.

.Net Framework 3.5 Windows 8 doesnt have a .Net Framework 3.5 installed by default. Please download it from Microsoft website. Some of the applications which have dependencies on .Net Framework will not work.

Recovery Partition After you install Windows 8, you wont be able to use the recovery partition on your PC to go back to your previous version of Windows.

Windows Upgrade Assistant (WUA) checks for incompatible hardware and software and will ask you to uninstall them. You cannot proceed with the upgrade when there are incompatible packages installed. Software Packages that have to be uninstalled before starting Windows 8 Upgrade includes:

How to install Windows 8 from an ISO image

The easiest way to convert an ISO file to a DVD in Windows 7 is to use Windows Disc Image Burner. On a PC running Windows XP or Windows Vista, a third-party program is required to convert an ISO file into installable mediaand DVD burning software often includes this capability. One option is the USB/DVD download tool provided by the Microsoft Store. It is always recommended to backup your installation as well as your personal files before you start the (upgrade) installation. For this purpose Fujitsu recommend:

Depending on your upgrade option, you have to do a clean wipe and install. You can use Windows Easy Transfer to transfer your personal files and settings.

(Upgrade) Installation
When your upgrade option is supported you have to start the installation from your existing operating system. For unsupported upgrade options you have to perform a clean install by booting from an installation media with Windows 8. Make sure that you select the correct boot menu entry for UEFI or BIOS installation.

After you upgrade, please visit FAI Support Page for updated BIOS, drivers and utilities etc. You can use Fujitsu Software Download Manager (FSDM) from FAI Support Page for automatic download of drivers and utilities for that model (if FSDM is supported for that model). Afterwards you can restore your settings and personal file via Windows Easy Transfer if you stored them before hand.
