Typographic Style
The Elements
of
Herman Zapf has stated that all desktop typographers should study the book, The Elements of Typographic Style. It is not just one more publication on typography, like so many others on the market. It is, instead, a must for everybody in the graphic arts, and especially for our new friends entering the field. Written by an expert, Robert Bringhursts book is particularly welcome in an age where typographic design is sometimes misconstrued as a form of private self-expression for designers. As Bringhurst puts it: Good typography is like bread: ready to be admired, appraised and dissected before it is consumed. Zapf commented, I wish to see this book become the Typographers Bible. But just reading a book on typography is not enough. Good designers develop a habit of utilizing the principles and elements of design incorporating typography into the layout. They develop an eye and style that is developed through observation, practice and an understanding of what works and what does not. The type elements are indeed a critical piece and must be taken seriously for any design that includes typography to be successful. Perhaps reading this excellent book will help the novice designer move to a new level of understanding in using typography. But the test will come when the reader attempts to apply what he learned and can do professional work on a consistent basis.
