ThereisnostraightforwardassociationbetweenreligionandviolenceagainstwomeninSouth Asia.Someaspectsofreligionprotectwomenagainstviolence:e.g.Islamforbidsfemale infanticide,andBuddhismandJainismpreachnonviolenceinallrelationships.However, domestic(physicalandsexual)violenceagainstwomenoccursinallregionsandreligionsof SouthAsiaandtheSouthAsianDiaspora.StatisticalstudiesinSouthAsiaoroverseasshow thatabout20%to50%ofwomenreportrecentphysicalorsexualabusefromtheirfamily, irrespectiveofreligion. NoneofSouthAsiasreligionsexplicitlyendorseviolenceagainstwomen.However,amongall religions,dailylifeandculturalpracticetendtobeveryconservative,rootedinpatriarchy,with strictrolesformenandwomen,divisionsbetweenmothersinlawanddaughtersinlaw, customarydowrypayments,andgreatimportancegiventofamilyunity,andnotbringing shametothecommunity.Womenaresocializedtoenduremuchinthenameofupholding cultureandfamilyhonor.Further,insubregionswithlowfemaleliteracyandhighfemale unemploymentrates,womenmayhavenopracticalalternativetoenduringabuse.
