VALENTINEs A short history of this romantic feast

St. Valentines Day is celebrated on 14th February every year, and in Ireland we have a special reason to be particularly fond of this Saint as his remains are in White friar Street Church in Dublin, a gift from the nineteenth century pope, Gregory XVI. Every year special Masses are held on 14th February in the church for engaged couples. Although St. Valentine is associated with love, romance and the giving of gifts and cards, little is known of the original St. Valentine in fact there were several Valentines associated with 14th February in the early history of the Church. The first associations of St. Valentine with a day celebrating romance and love are attributed to Geoffrey Chaucer of The Canterbury Tales in the 14th century. Initially lovers used to exchange hand-written notes, letters and poems expressing their feelings. However, in the 19th century, the arrival of a postal system increased the popularity of sending loveletters, particularly anonymously, and the next development was of pre-printed cards . These were often decorated with real lace and ribbons although this was replaced with paper lace in the mid-nineteenth century. Nowadays, Valentines Day is an established day for lovers to remember each other and give each other cards and gifts, from traditional flowers and chocolates to something altogether more personal and quirky. It is also a day for candlelight dinners and other romantic dalliances for couples, and woe betide any boyfriend or husband who accidentally forgets to show his girlfriend or wife how special she is! It is estimated men spend twice as much as women on their Valentines Day gifts... For any singles without any romantic entanglements to celebrate, its definitely a day for keeping the head down who wants to be asked did they get a Valentine and have to say no?! But it is also a day for celebrating that secret crush by sending an anonymous card or gift or even asking that special someone out on a date.

HER This critically-acclaimed movie by Spike Jonze has been hailed as a masterpiece for its story starring Joaquin Phoenix talking to and falling in love with a computer operating system voiced by the sultry Scarlett Johansson. The film won the Best Screenplay Award at Golden Globes this year and is up for five Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Gunday Gundays promotions have picked up pace ahead of its Valentine Day release. Its impossible you havent heard about this Yash Raj Film about Bikram (Ranveer Singh) and Bala (Arjun Kapoor) set in 1970s Calcutta along with Priyanka Chopra. We like the action and some songs already although its safe to say that the usually romantic genre-led YRF could have offered viewers something more well, romantic, on Valentine Day. Fandry Fandry is an indie movie that won critical acclaim at the 2013 Mumbai Film Festival where it won the Grand Jury Prize. The Marathi movie will presumably have a limited release but this romantic movie set amidst caste discrimination will definitely tug both your heartstrings. All Is Lost All is Lost is moving into guy-survival arena, a genre your girl will probably not enjoy. The movie follows the story of Robert Redford who is stuck at sea waiting to be rescued. It has no dialogues to speak of and has been critically acclaimed since its premiere at Cannes 2013. Pompeii We were going to exclude this movie from our list because it seemed like another disaster movie with senseless action and violence that your girlfriend might not forgive you for showing her on Valentines Day. Then we discovered Pompeii is produced and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, the guy behind the Resident Evil films for all you ignoramuses out there.
