Front Crankshaft Seal Replacement Edward F. Sowell 1976 Jaguar XJ S !

ackground "n a #$ %ear old car& %ou can e'pect crankshaft seals to leak. "n fact& " th(nk m% seals were leak(ng not(cea)le well )efore (ts #$th %ear. *hen " dec(ded to replace the front seal was when (t got so )ad that (t would spot the dr(+ewa% wh(le wa(t(ng for the garage door to go up. E+en then " d(dn,t want to )el(e+e& so " put (t on ramps and cleaned (t up the lower front of the eng(ne to )e sure that,s where (t was com(ng from. !ut where else (s a front dead center eng(ne o(l drop go(ng to come from- .fter conf(rmat(on& (t st(ll took me the )etter part of a %ear to get up the courage to go after (t. " don,t m(nd work(ng tops(de& )ut hate work(ng under the )east/ *hat "s "n+ol+ed 0he front seal (s a flat ru))er r(ng& )onded to steel& that (s pressed (nto the t(m(ng cha(n co+er on the front of the eng(ne. 0he crankshaft passes out of the crankcase through th(s seal. "ts funct(on& of course& (s to keep the o(l (n the eng(ne. "n t(me& heat causes (t to harden and wear causes (t to )eg(n leak(ng. .lso& the slee+e o+er the shaft on wh(ch the seal r(des can wear s(gn(f(cantl%. 1aturall%& the seal (s )eh(nd the ma(n pulle% and +()rat(on damper that attach to the front end of the crankshaft. 0o replace (t %ou ha+e to take off all the )elts& and then the pulle%& damper& and f(nall% a slotted con(cal slee+e that the damper r(des on. !eh(nd the cone there (s a stra(ght slee+e 2called a 3d(stance p(ece4 (n the Repa(r 5perat(ons 6anual 2R567& (.e.& spacer7 that the seal r(des on. 5nce (t (s sl(pped off of the shaft& the seal can )e e'tracted from (ts recess (n the t(m(ng cha(n co+er. 0he parts are shown (n F(gure 1. .t the left %ou see the new seal and slee+e near the )o'. !elow are the old slee+e& the slotted cone& the damper& pulle%& and the )olt. 8nfortunatel%& " forgot to show the he' post that )olts onto the pulle% as d(scussed )elow. Read on. 0h(ngs to 0ake .part to ;et near the Seal Rad(ator*hether or not to remo+e the rad(ator (s the f(rst <uest(on %ou w(ll ha+e to ask %ourself. 0he R56 sa%s %ou should. =(r)% >alm,s !ook sa%s %ou don,t ha+e to& and th(s has )een conf(rmed )% man% XJ S owners?mechan(cs on the XJ S @o+ers ma(l l(st. " set out to do (t w(thout rad(ator remo+al s(nce " recentl% had a re cored rad(ator (nstalled )% !r(tal(a 6otors 2Fullerton& C.7 prec(sel% )ecause remo+al (s so hard (n the earl% XJ S cars. .lso& " had Aust re)u(lt m% a(r cond(t(on(ng s%stem& (nclud(ng a new h(gh tech condenser& and " d(dn,t want to mess that up. 1onetheless& halfwa% through the d(sassem)l% process " changed m% m(nd and dec(ded " had to remo+e (t or r(sk destro%(ng (t. 0he space (s t(ght (n there& and w(th all the pr%(ng and pull(ng to get the pulle%s& cones&

ke%s& and seal out %ou w(ll almost certa(nl% d(ng the rad(ator more than once. 6oreo+er& an% d(ff(cult(es along the wa%& such as a stuck cone or seal& w(ll make %ou w(sh %ou had more space to work on (t. !ut& (n the end " d(d not remo+e (t. " d(d remo+e the top ra(l& all the hoses& and unhooked the condenser from (t& )ut (t would not l(ft out. 0h(s was pro)a)l% )ecause of the notor(ous o(l cooler mount(ng ta)s at the )ottom. !ut whate+er the source of the res(stance& (t slowed me down enough to see that (f " remo+ed the fan?(dler pulle% mount from the eng(ne )lock " could remo+e the fan shroud. *(th that out of the wa%& the space down there suddenl% looked l(ke the ;rand Can%on/ F(gure # shows the +(ew from the r(ght s(de. S(nce at th(s po(nt " had remo+ed e+er%th(ng& %ou can see the )are shaft near the center to the left of the photo. F(gure #. 0he )are shaft. So& m% answer to the <uest(on (s remo+e the rad(ator. :ou w(ll regret (t constantl% (f %ou don,t. 0hat sa(d& " w(ll cont(nue here to descr()e how " d(d (t w(thout rad(ator remo+al. "f %ou don,t remo+e the rad(ator %ou w(ll ha+e to remo+e the fan (n (ts ent(ret%& rather than Aust the )lade and clutch as " or(g(nall% d(d& then remo+e the shroud. 5n m% car& " also had to remo+e the rad(ator top ra(l to get the shroud. *h(le %ou are at (t& remo+e the electr(c fan. 5n m% car the shroud (s reall% two p(eces screwed together (n the m(ddle& w(th the electr(c fan mounted on the left part& so after " had remo+ed the r(ght part the other came out w(th l(ttle e'tra work. .lthough " d(d not do so& %ou should also tape a p(ece of card)oard to the rad(ator to pre+ent an% d(ngs& as %ou w(ll st(ll )e do(ng some hea+% work (n a cramped area. " th(nk (t,s pro)a)l% o+erk(ll to remo+e the rad(ator hoses& )ut then (t m(ght )e a good t(me to replace them an%wa%. *(th all that space& (t w(ll ne+er )e eas(er. !% the wa%& (f %ou ha+e the st%le of fan for wh(ch the clutch mount w(th a s(ngle )olt l(ke m(ne& %ou should remo+e the fan and clutch& then remo+e the (dler mount(ng )racket from the eng(ne. 5therw(se& %ou w(ll r(sk damag(ng the rad(ator. Rad(ator 0op Ra(l Remo+e (t. 5therw(se& %ou w(ll not )e a)le to remo+e the fan shroud. Rad(ator 9oses >lann(ng to remo+e the rad(ator& " took off all m% hoses. " am not sure th(s (s reall% necessar%& )ut %ou w(ll surel% apprec(ate the e'tra space and s(mpl% )e(ng a)le to see the seal from all poss()le angles. .nd there (s no )etter t(me to replace them. Fan Shroud& 6echan(cal Fan& and Electr(c Fan "n m% op(n(on& all of these should )e remo+ed. " f(rst remo+ed onl% the mechan(cal fan and tor<control clutch& then worked for a da% and a half w(th the other th(ngs (n the wa%. " wound up w(th a lot of cuts on m% forearms from the shroud& and damage to the rad(ator f(ns. 5n m% car the shroud (s (n two p(eces& screwed together (n the m(ddle. 0he left part holds the electr(c fan& and the r(ght (s the mechan(cal fan shroud. " separated the two hal+es& hop(ng to )e a)le to get the mechan(cal fan part out w(thout fuss(ng w(th d(sconnect(ng the electr(c fan. "n the end& " wound up tak(ng out )oth for eas(er access. " ma% ha+e )een eas(er to remo+e (t as one p(ece. Some sa% %ou can get the fan shroud out of there w(thout remo+(ng the fan?(dler pulle% mount(ng )racket. 5n some cars that ma% )e poss()le& )ut " don,t see how %ou can do (t (f %ou ha+e the 3s(ngle )olt4 st%le fan clutch. Four )olts& one of wh(ch (s reall% hard to get at& and the fan?(dler mount(ng )racket (s (n %our hand. .nd then %ou can remo+e the r(ght

shroud eas(l%. Suddenl%& %ou can see th(ngs down there/ 2See F(gure #7. .fter remo+al& place a p(ece of card)oard o+er the face of the rad(ator. " d(d not& )ut w(shed " had. Spo(ler 8ndertra% "n sp(te the (mpro+ed work space afforded )% fan and shroud remo+al& some of the work st(ll has to )e done from )elow. 0h(s w(ll )e much eas(er (f %ou remo+e the spo(ler undertra%. "n m% case th(s re<u(red also remo+(ng the access panels (n the front wheel wells to get at the fasten(ng screws. 0h(s (s pro)a)l% non standard& as the R56 does not ment(on th(s when (t descr()es the undertra% remo+al. 6% mechan(c ma% ha+e added some e'tra screws tr%(ng to secure the undertra% )etter after " damaged (t on a park(ng cur). ;ett(ng .t the Seal !elts !efore %ou can get at the seal %ou o)+(ousl% ha+e to remo+e the pulle% and +()rat(on damper. 0h(s means all the fan )elts ha+e to come off. So after remo+al of the fan shroud and fan& remo+e the power steer(ng?water pump )elt& the smog pump )elt& and f(nall% the alternator )elt& (n that order. !% the wa%& %ou should d(sconnect the )atter% f(rst& )ecause when %ou are tr%(ng to loosen the generator %our wrench ma% h(t the ca)le at the )ack. " d(dn,t& and had some sparks fl%(ng. >ulle% *hat looks l(ke a s(ngle pulle% on the front of the crankshaft (s reall% two p(eces 2See F(gure 17. 0he forward three )elt groo+es are on the pulle% proper. "t (s )olted to the +()rat(on damper& wh(ch has the forth )elt groo+e. 0he pulle% (s fastened to the +()rat(on damper w(th four )olts. 0wo of these )olts also ser+e to fasten a he' post (n the center of the pulle%& not shown (n m% ed(t(on of the R56. 0h(s (s pro)a)l% for manuall% turn(ng the crankshaft& as %ou m(ght want to do (f %ou are tr%(ng to set .1 to top dead center or someth(ng l(ke that. So remo+e the )olts hold(ng the he' post f(rst& )e(ng sure to catch the spacers that fall out. 0hen remo+e the other two& shorter& )olts and the pulle% w(ll separate from the +()rat(on damper w(th a gentle tap. !e careful that (t does not fall (nto the rad(ator& as (t (s hea+% and could do damage. 1ote that (f %ou ha+e remo+ed the fan and shroud all of th(s work can )e done most eas(l% from the top. Bamper . large center )olt holds on the damper. :ou w(ll need a 1 $?64 socket to loosen (t. 0he usual ad+(ce& wh(ch worked f(ne for me& (s to use the starter to loosen and remo+e the )olt. 0h(nk th(s through )efore %ou )eg(n )ecause (f %ou do (t wrong there m(ght some ser(ous damage done )% a fl%(ng )reaker )ar/ =eep (n m(nd that the eng(ne w(ll )e turn(ng clockw(se as %ou face (t (n front of the car. 0he nut w(ll )e held stat(oner% as the eng(ne rotates. 0o accompl(sh th(s& use a )ung% cord or someth(ng to lash a )reaker )ar so (t (s )raced aga(nst upward mot(on at the r(ght s(de of the car. 0hen& remo+e (gn(t(on power from the co(l and crank the eng(ne. Some sa% to keep crank(ng t(ll the )olt (s totall% e'tracted. " Aust loosened (t w(th the starter and turned (t out the rest of the wa% )% hand. 5nce the )olt (s remo+ed& use a plast(c hammer or )lock of wood to tap (t loose from the cone. 0h(s (s not hard. "t comes off eas(l%. Cone ;ett(ng the cone off can )e eas% or hard. Some sa% the% Aust pr(ed on (t a )(t w(th a screw dr(+er or pr% )ar& then sl(pped (t off. 6(ne was too t(ght& so th(s d(dn,t work. 5ther ad+(ce

was to dr(+e a screw dr(+er )lade (nto the slots to e'pand (t a )(t. B(dn,t work. *hat d(d work& not surpr(s(ngl%& was a 3>reston arm puller.4 .t least that,s what gu% at the e<u(pment rental store called (t& as (f e+er%one ought to know. 0he (mportant attr()utes are 2a7 the feet on the arms ha+e to )e th(n enough 2perhaps 1?C47 to f(t )eh(nd the cone& and 2)7 the length has to short enough to f(t )etween the crankshaft end and the rad(ator. 0ake some measurements )efore %ou head off to the rental store. . small po(ntD *hen %ou set up the puller& use a couple 1 E4 fender washers on the front of the crankshaft 2some wheel )ear(ng grease w(ll hold them (n place7 to keep the puller shaft from screw(ng (nto the damper )olt hole. " d(dn,t at f(rst& and " turned and turned )ut noth(ng mo+ed. " f(nall% real(Fed that the puller was thread(ng (nto )olt threads/ Fortunatel%& the threads must ha+e )een the same )ecause no damage was done. *oodruff =e% 0here are two *oodruff 2half moon7 ke%s. 5ne locates the cone t the crankshaft and the other the damper to the cone. 0he one (n the crankshaft has to come out (n order to remo+e the d(stance p(ece 2see *hat "s "n+ol+ed a)o+e7. @(ke the cone& man% d(fferent methods of remo+(ng th(s ke% ha+e )een proposed and used successfull%. 0he method that worked for me was the s(de of a wood ch(sel. !ut f(rst& " tapped the rear of the ke% w(th a long wooden dowel and hammer so as to dr(+e (t down and l(ft the front. 0hen " held the flat of the ch(sel on the surface of the crankshaft so that the )e+eled s(de edge was under the l(fted end of the ke%. . couple strong whacks w(th a hammer on the other s(de of the ch(sel and the ke% was on the garage floor. 2"t was m% old ch(sel& not m% new oneG7 B(stance >(ece 2Slee+e or Spacer7 " was apprehens(+e when " got to th(s po(nt s(nce some people ha+e had trou)le gett(ng th(s out. "t protrudes onl% a)out H?164 out of the seal& so (t,s hard to see how %ou could get a gr(p on (t (f an% ser(ous %ank(ng was re<u(red. Fortunatel%& (t sl(pped r(ght out. " fash(oned a hook )% )end(ng the end of a short length of tough w(re and forced (t through the l(p of the seal. !% turn(ng the w(re " was a)le to hook the )ack end of the slee+e and pull (t out. 0h(s was the eas(est part so far. !% the wa%& the d(stance p(ece should )e replaced along w(th the seal. 6(ne had a surpr(s(ngl% deep wear groo+e. .lthough some ha+e suggested s(mpl% re+ers(ng (t on reassem)l%& " would )e reluctant to do so )ecause the wear groo+e (s so close to the center. 0he Jaguar seal comes w(th a new spacer& wh(ch together cost onl% IJK. Seal ;ett(ng the seal out was a maAor challenge. .s w(th other steps (n th(s long process& se+eral methods ha+e )een proposed and used successfull%. 5nes that d(dn,t work for me were L >r%(ng out w(th screwdr(+er. 0here are (ndentat(ons on each s(de of the recess apparentl% for th(s purpose& )ut " could not get a )(te (nto the e'posed s(de of the seal. L Br(+(ng a p(ck (nto the s(de of (t and pr%(ng. " )ent m% p(ck on th(s one& and mangled the seal& )ut got no mo+ement. L 8se a puller. " rented the puller that seemed most l(kel% to f(t (nto the space )etween the seal and the crankshaft. 0urned out to )e a p(lot )ear(ng puller& wh(ch would ha+e worked (f the crankshaft had not )een there. Forgot to take the damn th(ng )ack and wound up pa%(ng two da%s rent for no )enef(t at all. *hat d(d work was a +ar(at(on on a method de+(sed )% Ra% Schm(tt us(ng an ord(nar% pa(nt can opener. " d(d not understand how Ra% used the de+(ce so " (n+ented m% own

wa%. 6% method used a needle nosed +(se gr(p pl(ers to hold the opener and to act as a le+er& F(gure H. 1ote how the opener (s gr(pped E4 or so )ack from the nose of the pl(ers. 0h(s (s so %ou can put the nose on the end of the crankshaft and get a lot of le+erage. 0he po(nt of gr(pp(ng the opener along (ts length (s also cr(t(calM (t has to )e found )% tr(al and error so as to )e a)le to get the hook )eh(nd the seal. F(gure H. Spec(al tools 0he hook (s (nserted )eh(nd the seal& and the nose of the pl(ers (s placed on the flat front end of the crankshaft. 0he handles of the +(se gr(ps are then pulled awa% from the eng(ne. 0h(s g(+es a lot of le+erage& so (t d(dn,t take much force to pull one s(de loose. 0hen " mo+ed o+er to the other s(de and repeated the same th(ng& and the seal was (n m% hand. 0rust me& all of th(s w(ll )e clearer when %ou start tr%(ng to get the seal out. @ater& " got Ra% to e'pla(n how he used the opener. F(rst& he left the d(stance p(ece (n place on the crankshaft. 2.ctuall%& he couldn,t get the d(stance p(ece out w(th the seal (n place )ecause (t was stuck to the shaft.7 *(th that (n m(nd& here (s what Ra% sa%sD 3.s " recall& " used the end of the spacer& angled off a )(t so as to clear the crankshaft. 0hat (s& the opener (s not le+ered along a d(ameter of the crankshaft& )ut rather along a tangent. . )(t of s(de force keeps (t (n pos(t(on aga(nst the crank and spacer. So (f %ou put (t o+er the top of the crank& sl(p the hook end under the (nner seal& and keep (t pulled down aga(nst the crank& %ou can push the end of the opener toward the eng(ne and (t w(ll le+er aga(nst the spacer and l(ft the seal out a )(t. Sw(tch to the other s(de and (t should )e free.4 Clean(ng *h(le the pulle% and damper (s off %ou w(ll want to clean the front of the eng(ne. F(rst& co+er the alternator w(th a plast(c grocer% )ag and pack the seal ca+(t% w(th a shop towel. 0hen drag %our o(l drop tra% up under the front of the eng(ne 2surel% %ou ha+e one of these/7. Spra% the front of the eng(ne w(th ;unk and scrape around a )(t& then hose (t off. . l(ttle effort& and %ou w(ll feel e+en )etter a)out the Ao). Reassem)l% Clean the recess !e sure to clean the recess (n the t(m(ng co+er )efore (nsert(ng the seal. " spra%ed a clean(ng sol+ent (n there and poked around w(th a shop towel and screwdr(+er. @ater& " w(shed " had used a m(rror to e'am(ne (t carefull% to )e sure no fragments of the old seal were st(ck(ng (n the corners& )ut e+er%th(ng worked out 5=. 0he danger& of course& (s someth(ng gett(ng (n the wa% of proper seat(ng of the seal and?or the d(stance p(ece& or worse gett(ng lodged (n the new seal. Seal 0he seal has to )e pressed e+enl% (nto the recess (n the t(m(ng cha(n co+er. 0he R56 sa%s Ngentl% tap (t (nto place.N Some XJ S @o+ers l(st mem)ers ha+e reported that th(s (s more d(ff(cult than (t sounds. 5ne suggest(on was to use large >OC tu)(ng f(tt(ng and the damper )olt as a press to (nsert the seal. 0h(s (s what " d(d. "n F(gure H %ou can see a wh(te #4 >OC cap w(th a 14 hole )ored (n the center. 0he f(tt(ng was selected to ha+e a d(ameter that matched the face of the seal& and a length to accommodate allow the damper )olt to reach the crankshaft. " used a 14 flat )or(ng )(t to dr(ll the hole. >lac(ng th(s on the face of the seal and screw(ng the nut (n w(th hand force onl% pressed the seal gentl% (nto the recess. 0he m(stake " made was fa(l(ng to o)ser+e that the )(t wandered off center a l(ttle. 0h(s made one edge of the hole a l(ttle closer to the oppos(te face of the

f(tt(ng than the other& result(ng (n the seal com(ng to rest a l(ttle une+en. Some work w(th sandpaper on the f(tt(ng hole edge got (t more e+en& and the seal got properl% seated. B(stance >(ece 2Slee+e& Spacer7 0he (mportant th(ng here (s to remem)er that th(s goes on after the seal& not )efore. 5therw(se& %ou w(ll ha+e to e(ther remo+e the d(stance p(ece or somehow coa' the l(p of the seal o+er the d(stance p(ece d(ameter wh(le f(ght(ng w(th the other task of gett(ng (t to sl(de neatl% (nto the recess. 0he pro)lem here (s some ha+e reported a m(nor (nterference f(t )etween the new d(stance p(ece and the crankshaft& (n wh(ch case %ou w(ll )e faced w(th a tough e'tract(on pro)lem. >ut the seal (n f(rst. 6% d(stance p(ece sl(pped eas(l% o+er the shaft& so " ha+e noth(ng further to report. *oodruff =e% .fter the d(stance p(ece (s (nserted %ou can put a new ke% (nto the crankshaft. 8s(ng the old one (s not a good (dea )ecause (t was pro)a)l% damaged dur(ng e'tract(on. " got a Jaguar part& )ut some people get them at the hardware store. >ro)a)l% the same part. ;ett(ng (t started (s a challenge )ecause the f(t (s +er% t(ght. " gr(pped (t w(th a pl(ers and sort of w(ggled (t (n a )(t& then tapped w(th a plast(c hammer 2one of the new tools " got wh(le do(ng th(s Ao)7. 0he ne't challenge (s seat(ng (t properl%. "f (t (s not full% pressed (nto (ts slot& or (f one end (s h(gher than the other (s& there w(ll )e (nterference w(th the ke% slot (n the cone when %ou tr% to put (t on. "n fact& " )el(e+e th(s what caused m% cone to )e so hard to get off. 6% techn(<ue (n th(s regard used a prec(s(on tool and a not so prec(s(on tool. 0he prec(s(on tool was a 9el(os cal(per& the onl% th(ng left from m% da%s as an apprent(ce toolmaker. *(th (t " measured from the top of the ke% to the oppos(te s(de of the crankshaft at the front and )ack of the ke%. "f the% were une<ual& " tapped on the on the h(gh end. 0he non prec(s(on tool was a hammer and a length of alum(num angle stock that " could pos(t(on carefull% at the h(gh end of the ke%. "f the ke% (s r(d(ng on the )ottom of (ts slot& as (t should )e at th(s po(nt form earl(er taps at the center& (t takes prett% hard whacks to get (t to mo+e. " f(nall% got (t e+en after two or three tr(es& and the cone sl(pped r(ght o+er. Cone !efore (nstall(ng the cone& (nspect (t for damage that %ou ma% ha+e done dur(ng remo+al. " had to do some f(l(ng )ecause " had tr(ed to dr(+e a screwdr(+er (nto the slots. 0he ke% (n the cone should not need replac(ng& s(nce there was no need to remo+e (t. .s ment(oned a)o+e& the cone should sl(p eas(l% o+er the shaft (f the ke% (s seated properl%. *ell& " actuall% had to tap the last P4 or so w(th a plast(c mallet. 6uch eas(er than the remo+al. Bamper >utt(ng the damper on (s eas%. Just sl(p (t o+er the cone and screw (n the large )olt. 0(ghten(ng (s another matter. 0he R56 calls for t(ghten(ng to 1#$ foot pounds& )ut word has (t that 1$K should )e the target. Reportedl%& (t (s fr(ct(on )etween the cone and the shaft and the cone and the damper that keeps the damper from sl(pp(ng wh(le dr(+(ng the hea+% load of fans& alternator& power steer(ng pump& smog pump and a(r cond(t(oner. 0hat (s& the ke% (s for al(gnment onl%M (t (s not strong enough to take the load. 0o get the tor<ue %ou need to securel% lock the crankshaft. *hat worked for me were two wooden wedges dr(+en (nto )etween the teeth on the fl%wheel and the )ellhous(ng& r(ght s(de of the +eh(cle. 5ne wedge d(dn,t work. "t took se+eral tr(es w(th two& wh(ttl(ng a )(t w(th a sa)er saw to get them the r(ght s(Fe an shape. F(gure H shows these 3spec(al tools.4 0he% reall% ha+e to )e dr(+en (n& too. "t d(d not hold the f(rst two or three tr(es& so " had to keep

" put a p(ece of tape on the d(al so " could )etter see (t& as %ou can,t get a good d(rect look at (t )ecause of the )onnet.
