Masonry Build Competition: Adaptive Community

ARCH 264: Architecture Studio II Spring 2010

The Masonry Contractors of New Jersey sponsored the 2010 Masonry Build Competition to design a new Boys and Girls Club at an undeveloped site at Jersey City. The abandoned buildings on the site reveal the negative effects of the industrial era. Our proposal attempts to bring a renaissance to the neighborhood and to create awareness of preservation and history of the site by reusing and renovating the forgotten structures.

SITE ORGANIZATION & DESIGN

CLASSROOM ORGANIZATION & DESIGN

The project requires the design of an entry canopy for the eastern entrance of the School of architecture at NJIT that must be secured on the wall. The proposed design is inspired by the vine, a plant that finds support on other objects. The canopy consists of strips of recycled tire rubber held together in tension by folding the material multiple times.

Newark Town House

ARCH 364: Architecture Studio VI Spring 2011

The town house is designed to be a single-family residence with an auxiliary medical office. The building's facade challenges the common order of solids and voids by facing the street with a translucent skin that partially reveals the solid programmatic spaces. The rooms are organized and shaped as independent stacked boxes to allow for an open ground plan dedicated for gardening.

LOCATION & GEOGRAPHIC INFLUENCE

INITIAL URBAN STRATEGY

Valencia

Agriculture Production & Sale

Alcosa Park is a marginal district in state of decay in Alfafar, Valencia, Spain. This neighborhood was born in the 60s and currently has disturbing sociological indicators. The semester-long project aims for interventions in Alcosa Park within the field of urban recycling, that would ultimately reactivate the community into a new cycle. The agricultural characteristics of the site and its surroundings help define the proposed intervention in Alcosa Park. The proposal includes a plan for reactivating the economy of the neighborhood. New methods of agriculture agriculture, research and commerce based on ORGANIC FARMING are introduced in the neighborhood reusing the existing structures.

The project is a winery and visitors center on the edge of the historic Esporao complex of white-washed buildings and geometric gardens. The proposed winery avoides taking a distinguashable objects shape and limits its scale to protect the iconic image of the exisiting buildings. The winery adopts the form of a landscape building, having its production and storage underground in a continous space constructed with reinforced concrete and with the presence of above-ground white film glass boxes scattered throughout the edge of the historic site to accommodate tall machinery and let filtered light in.
