EVENT REPORT SPORTS DAY AT IPTHO TEACHERS TRAINING COLLEGE On the 1st of March, our school, Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Tun Hussein Onn had organized Sports Day. It was held at our school field. All the students and most of the lecturers participated in the Sports Day. The event lasted for two days. All the students of our badge were excited and happy because this is our first time participating in the event. There were four different sport houses which were Merak, Kenyalang, Bayan and Helang. The objectives of this Sports Day were to expose the new badge of students to the environment and activities of the Sports Day. This will help us to at least know the proper ways to conduct and handle Sports Day in the future. Besides that, this event was able to enhance the relationship among the students and the lecturers from different races and cultural background. Hence, they are able to understand each other more and to work hand in hand with one another in the college. As a result, the 1 Malaysia concept can be inculcated among the people. They will have courage and confidence to face the challenges in life. During the first day, we could see our school field decorated with flags that fluttered in the light wind, banners bearing the names, bright colours and logos of the sport houses adorning the field. Four large tents in red, blue, green and yellow were erected at one corner of the school field. There were another tent in white that housed the Red Crescent members who helped the injured. All the students were required to take part in the aerobic exercise which was conducted by the seniors. An air of anticipated excitement hung over the place.

Long queue of registered competitors were waiting in line to be allowed into the field before the event began. At nine oclock in the morning, the event commenced. One by one, the sports event took place. The students cheered for their house athletes as loudly as they could until their throats were sore! There were so much cheering and clapping that could be heard as supporters tried to boost the morale of the athletes and crowds. The track events such as 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres and so on were very exciting. The athletes were excellent runners. Besides, there were also events like high jump, long jump. throwing missiles, javelin throw and so on. Hawkers outside the stadium who were our very own students were doing a roaring business. Brightly coloured pinkish drinks clashed with the sizzling orange of hamburgers. A variety of fruits such as watermelon, papaya, guava and so on were sold. Business was brisk as the students filled the stalls because the price of the food sold were reasonable. On the last day, the sports events such as 1500 meters,400 meters and 800 meters passing baton, tug of war and so on were continued. During break time, the students thronged the tents as each of the sport houses provide lunch. They were eating and drinking. It was amazing how thirsty and hungry one gets during Sports Day. At 2 p.m. sharp, the marching and parade began as a closing ceremony for the Sports Day. This ceremony was to be graced by our headmistress. She was also the guest of honour who took the salute. The parade consisted of the four sport houses with beautiful mascots and different uniform bodies such as the Red Crescent, the Boys Brigade, the Scout and so on. The students marched smartly. The school band strucked up the National Anthem, followed by our school song. When all the events were completed, it was time to give away the prize. Every student lined up at the

centre of the field according to the respective sport houses. As each winner walked up to get his or her trophy, the entire school cheered and clapped. The champion this year goes to the Merak house. We had an enjoyable time. The Sports Day was a success and had achieved the objective. We hope that our school will organized more and more interesting events for the students in the future. Global Warming Every year, almost 7 billion tons of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere by human activity. That is the equivalent of 107,700,000 jet airplanes being in the air at once! This harrowing figure is the main cause of global warming, and has been increasing for the last 50 years. Global warming is caused by the increase of greenhouse gasses, carbon dioxide and methane primarily, in the earth's upper atmosphere directly caused by human burning of fossil fuels, industrial, farming, and deforestation activities. Global warming is defined as an increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere (especially a sustained increase that causes climatic changes). Many people believe in these statements, but there are many people around the world that refuse to believe that human contributions are the main cause of global warming, saying that the increase is part of the natural climatic change of earth. Debatable causes and solutions of this theory of global warming include the natural climatic change, the grounds of human causes, and the solutions we can take to halt global warming. As humans, we all have our own opinions, but the problem of global warming should not be debated; it should be solved.

Many people around the world debate about the facts about global warming. The evidence that supports the human cause is plentiful and powerful, but few can find support for the issue that global warming is a natural part of the Earth's climatic change. Some people do support this issue, like John Christy, director of the Earth System Science Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Christy says, "The carbon dioxide from fossil fuels is distributed [very] evenly around the globe and not concentrated in the Arctic, so we can't blame greenhouse gases for the Northern

Hemisphere warming over the past 27 years... The most likely suspect for [warming] is a natural climate change or cycle that we didn't expect or just don't understand." This quote describes a natural cause to global warming, and refrains from relating to cause by carbon dioxide emissions from humans.

People have also begun to link global warming to the sun in the last decade. The views of David Bellamy, a conservationist, and Dr Sami Solanki, the director of Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, include that the majority of people are seeing global warming in the wrong light and that the brightness of the sun is directly related to the warming of the Earth in the last century (Leidig and Nikkhah 1). The sun is a popular resource for natural cause of global warming, but there are scarce amounts of evidence on this information. Sallie Baliunas, an astrophysicist, believes that the sun is the main culprit of global warming, and that its varying activity is the cause for the global warming. As a strong scientist of her field, Baliunas supports her opinion with many statistics that prove that the sun does cause changes in the earth's climate. However, by stating that the sun is the only reason for global warming, she is quite a biased individual. The evidence presented by these scholars is very influential in the scientific community, contradicting the mainstream idea that humans are to blame; this is negative upon the goal of the people trying to stop global warming.

Many believe that global warming is a myth, just an excuse for the record temperatures and other weather patterns, but they are very wrong. There are two main sides to the argument of the cause of global warming; those who believe that global warming is just a natural phase in the climatic habits of earth, and those who

believe humans are the direct cause through the burning of fossil fuels and other processes. Each side of the debate provides much scientific evidence that proves there point. In an article released by the Dept. of Commerce, NASA claims "...the solar increases do not have the ability to cause large global temperature increases... greenhouse gasses are indeed playing a dominant role" (1). As the leading global scientific institution of the US Government, NASA's point is highly accepted by the community. In the same article, the Dept. of Commerce says that only a quarter of the amount of global warming can be attributed to the sun (3). That one-quarter is the natural part of global warming; the rest is from human activity.

The majority of the population of the Earth believes that Global Warming is an effect of the burning of fossil fuels. According to the Stanford Solar Center, Global Warming is attributed to the increase of greenhouse gasses (carbon dioxide and methane) in the Earth's atmosphere, caused by human burning of fossil fuels, industrial, farming, and deforestation activities (1). The affects we humans have on the environment seem to be popping up all the time, and many think that global warming is our defining effect on the Earth. Every year, billions of tons of carbon dioxide are added to the atmosphere, adding up to the largest concentration in 420,000 years. Many cars, power plants, and burning of anything containing carbon generously add to this number. We as humans should be able to understand our fossil fuel burning habits enough to stop the increase of carbon dioxide every year.

To witness the change of the world from a global warming standpoint, there are many indicators proving human cause. Some of the sources that expose the causes of global warming include tree-ring research, ice-core analysis, and sediment

research. For example, research from looking at sediment layering shows that the water level of the ocean is 60 ft lower than 400,000 years ago. Contributing is treering research, which shows the amount of precipitation in the atmosphere. By looking at this kind of data, scientists can help evaluate the amount of change that we have might have inflicted compared to the thousands of years prior to our modern existence. One of the main effects global warming is causing now is the melting of the north and south polar caps. The extremely fast rate of the thaw at the caps is an affect of global warming, and in a National Geographic magazine, scientists conclude that the earths polar caps and glaciers all around the globe are already melting at an unstoppable rate from global warming.

The problem of global warming has been unsolvable for scientists in the last 30 years, but modern day researchers have found various remedies to the problems that we as humans have inflicted on the earth. The deforestation that is occurring around the globe is a key factor to causes of global warming. According to a Popular Mechanics magazine, studies are underway that have a goal to reduce global warming with genetically engineered plants that will be completely efficient in recycling carbon dioxide. The result of these plants would be less carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Another solution to the problem is replenishing the oceans with algae. Algae are also one of nature's carbon dioxide recyclers. There are plans to grow trillions of algae at farms and release them into the oceans around the world. Since the actual algae population of the world is decreasing, this would benefit not only decrease in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but also repopulate the algae population. Both of these examples of helping to decrease global warming are worth looking into, but the most accessible way to solve the problem would be to look into

alternate forms of energy. The major forms of energy used in the United States include coal burning, natural gas burning, nuclear reactors, and petroleum (oil). These are all non-renewable resources that have a limited quantity present on our planet. Renewable types of energy, like hydroelectric, geothermal, wind, and solar energy, are all barely in use in America. By switching to these more efficient types of energy, the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere would be drastically.decreased.

As a nation, we are attributed as the leading cause of global warming, with the most greenhouse emissions anywhere in the world. In addition, as the most influential country in the world, we can choose to sit by and watch it happen, or we can decide to become a more environmentally aware population, setting an example for the entire world to see. The debate of the causes of global warming should not matter, because the fact is that we are contributing to global warming through our activities, adding on to any natural climatic phase that the earth is experiencing. By not releasing so much greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, we can end the global warming scare, and end the most debated environmental topic of the world today.

Top 10 Things You Can Do to Reduce Global Warming Burning fossil fuels such as natural gas, coal, oil and gasoline raises the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and carbon dioxide is a major contributor to the greenhouse effect and global warming. You can help to reduce the demand for fossil fuels, which in turn reduces global warming, by using energy more wisely. Here are 10 simple actions you can take to help reduce global warming. 1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Do your part to reduce waste by choosing reusable products instead of disposables. Buying products with minimal packaging (including the economy size when that makes sense for you) will help to reduce waste. And whenever you can, recycle paper, plastic, newspaper, glass and aluminum cans. If there isn't a recycling program at your workplace, school, or in your community, ask about starting one. By recycling half of your household waste, you can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually. 2. Use Less Heat and Air Conditioning Adding insulation to your walls and attic, and installing weather stripping or caulking around doors and windows can lower your heating costs more than 25 percent, by reducing the amount of energy you need to heat and cool your home. Turn down the heat while you're sleeping at night or away during the day, and keep temperatures moderate at all times. Setting your thermostat just 2 degrees lower in winter and higher in summer could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year. 3. Change a Light Bulb Wherever practical, replace regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. Replacing just one 60-watt incandescent light bulb with a CFL will save you $30 over the life of the bulb. CFLs also last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs, use two-thirds less energy, and give off 70 percent less heat. If every U.S. family replaced one regular light bulb with a CFL, it would eliminate 90 billion pounds of greenhouse gases, the same as taking 7.5 million cars off the road. 4. Drive Less and Drive Smart Less driving means fewer emissions. Besides saving gasoline, walking and biking are great forms of exercise. Explore your community mass transit system, and check out options for carpooling to work or school.

When you do drive, make sure your car is running efficiently. For example, keeping your tires properly inflated can improve your gas mileage by more than 3 percent. Every gallon of gas you save not only helps your budget, it also keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. 5. Buy Energy-Efficient Products When it's time to buy a new car, choose one that offers good gas mileage. Home appliances now come in a range of energy-efficient models, and compact florescent bulbs are designed to provide more natural-looking light while using far less energy than standard light bulbs. Avoid products that come with excess packaging, especially molded plastic and other packaging that can't be recycled. If you reduce your household garbage by 10 percent, you can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide annually. 6. Use Less Hot Water Set your water heater at 120 degrees to save energy, and wrap it in an insulating blanket if it is more than 5 years old. Buy low-flow showerheads to save hot water and about 350 pounds of carbon dioxide yearly. Wash your clothes in warm or cold water to reduce your use of hot water and the energy required to produce it. That change alone can save at least 500 pounds of carbon dioxide annually in most households. Use the energy-saving settings on your dishwasher and let the dishes air-dry. 7. Use the "Off" Switch Save electricity and reduce global warming by turning off lights when you leave a room, and using only as much light as you need. And remember to turn off your television, video player, stereo and computer when you're not using them. It's also a good idea to turn off the water when you're not using it. While brushing your teeth, shampooing the dog or washing your car, turn off the water until you actually need it for rinsing. You'll reduce your water bill and help to conserve a vital resource. 8. Plant a Tree If you have the means to plant a tree, start digging. During photosynthesis, trees and other plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. They are an integral part of the natural atmospheric exchange cycle here on Earth, but there are too few of them to fully counter the increases in carbon dioxide caused by automobile traffic, manufacturing and other human activities. A single tree will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime. 9. Get a Report Card from Your Utility Company

Many utility companies provide free home energy audits to help consumers identify areas in their homes that may not be energy efficient. In addition, many utility companies offer rebate programs to help pay for the cost of energy-efficient upgrades. 10. Encourage Others to Conserve Share information about recycling and energy conservation with your friends, neighbors and co-workers, and take opportunities to encourage public officials to establish programs and policies that are good for the environment. These 10 steps will take you a long way toward reducing your energy use and your monthly budget. And less energy use means less dependence on the fossil fuels that create greenhouse gases and contribute to global warming. Rainbow

UNICEF Romania 00378/ Pirozzi Enjoying the happy colours of life's rainbow By Camelia Teodosiu This is a story about how the color black can turn into a rainbow. Who can work such miracles and how? You may well wonder. The answer to this question can be found by reading the following story. From the moment I met Ilinca she struck me as being balanced and brave. She likes to listen to music and to talk to other children, with no feeling of rejection. Her taste in music and clothing is typical for her age this includes just about anything popular or in fashion. She does her share of household chores, knows how to cook spaghetti and sauce, and would like to be a better homemaker. Of all the books she has read, the one that has impressed her most is Hector Malots Alone in the World, because it resembles our life, the life of abandoned children, she says with a hint of sadness in her voice. Of course many of her responses might be considered far too brief, and she failed to provide too many explanations. But this is all the more relevant because the points of reference for children in similar situations are much simpler and fleeting.

After our talk I was left with these thoughts: learn to enjoy the little things in life, and try to live for the moment. - My name is Ilinca, I am 15 years old. I am in 9th grade in high school and have lived in an institution for 11 years. In fact we are a family of 11 siblings. I was abandoned in the maternity hospital where I stayed until I was about three years old. A lady came one day from England, and this was a lucky day for myself and other children like me, because she decided to take us away from there, and to offer us a family. We now have parents, even if they are called foster parents. Have you ever met your biological parents? Yes! Do you get to visit them? Do you blame them for having abandoned you? I dont really communicate with them. How was life in the Snagov home? Did you learn to read and write?

At first a lady came to the house and taught us our first letters, and how to write. Then we were enrolled in the village school, but they turned us away. Why?

Because the parents of the children attending the school did not want them to be in the same class with us. Did this upset you? Did you try to understand why?

Yes, we were sad, but we told ourselves that, in the end, we would go to school somewhere. Now, for instance, I am in High School in Crngai. On the first school day, my friend, who is in the same situation, and I both felt that everyone was looking at us, that they knew something about our illness. She was so happy to be able to go to school with other children. But she was afraid they might find out, and she would be isolated once again. She explained that it is much better that the others not know: If they were to find out they would say: give them passing grades for the whole year because they are sick, and we dont want people to feel sorry for us. Then they would withdraw, they would stop talking to us... I was just looking at her, without daring to ask how far her courage would go. I didnt know where to begin and how to avoid putting her in an awkward or difficult position. I decided to ask her a simple and natural question: What do you know about your condition?

At first I didnt know very much. But I found out in time; in fact it was only a few years ago. When we first started taking medication we were all wondering: Why?, why?, and they wouldnt tell us. Our foster parents thought we were too young to b e told. But in time we found out. As we grew up, we noticed that others treated us a little different, but we thought this was normal, because we were living in a residential institution. Then one day mother decided to tell us. She gathered us all in the living room; guests were coming the following day, namely Mrs. Tina and Dr. Petrea, to tell us more about our disease. So mother prepared us and explained about the HIV virus. Then she taught us how to protect ourselves and how to avoid catching other germs, or hurting ourselves... What do you actually know about this virus?

That it cannot be transmitted by coughing, sneezing, hugging, or by using the same dishes. It is transmitted by blood, sexual intercourse, needles, open wounds... be. How did you react when you found out? I was a bit shocked to begin with, but then I realized that this was meant to

Did you discuss this among yourselves?

Yes, we wondered what we were going to do. How long would we have to take medication, why did we have to follow this treatment? At first we felt sick, nausea, the pills were not working. While she was talking, I kept repeating to myself the phrase that was like her concluding resignation to fate: This was meant to be... Did they really understand what could happen, what might happen if they stop the treatment? Her calm and natural response made me realize that I had asked my question out loud. We will feel increasingly worse and then we will die.

Even now I admit that I dont really know how to react to such a response, especially because I am afraid of dying. And so I tried to change the subject, somewhat too abruptly. What do you want to be when you grow up?

I dont know yet. W hen I was little I wanted to play handball and become a cook. Now I prefer swimming. I also used to watch football. I was a Rapid fan. What time of the year do you like?

Summer. It is more fun, sunshine, holidays... But as far as holidays go, I prefer the winter holidays. Thats when all the family comes together, there are so many preparations, everyone is happy. When I was little I used to write letters to Santa

Claus, and every year I would promise to be good. Then during the year I would do all sorts of naughty things, like any child. Before Christmas we get together and choose what foods we want to have: stuffed cabbage rolls, potato and beef salad, coffee cakes... We decorate the Christmas tree together. Are you making plans for the future? No! Id rather let time decide for me.

It is difficult to look ahead to the near or far future without some expectation. This could be why black is habitually considered to be the color of death. But at this moment I had a feeling that through the perspective of these children the color black can be seen as being all the colors of the rainbow. Something simple, natural, devoid of any bitterness, and enjoying all the beauty that life has to offer. I asked Ilinca if she has any wishes or if she likes to dream. She hesitated for a moment, admitting that she is afraid to hope that her wishes might come true. And if you ask her what she most appreciates about people, she does not hesitate to respond: I like people who can keep a secret.

Is it possible to gain the confidence of these children? Is it possible to make them feel safe or offer them a chance to get by on their own in society? It is admirable to see organizations such as Health Aid Romania running projects for HIV-positive children. They offer these children a family with foster parents, dignified living conditions, access to education. The presence of a psychologist is necessary not only during times of crisis and pain, but also to help whenever the need arises for them understand why others look at them differently and why they are condemned. UNICEF Romania fully supports these projects and needs partners to develop as many educational programs as possible in schools and families. If you want to help an HIV-positive child to be integrated into society you must fight the stigmatization and discrimination. It is not easy to change mentalities. There is a need for social strategies and policies, campaigns, programs and projects, case studies, and many other efforts, all of which are worth undertaking, even in the course of several generations, if their success can make you see through the eyes of these children. Maybe in such wise you will see that the color of death, black, can have all the colors of the rainbow.

There are 7,500 children living with HIV/AIDS in Romania.

Pride and Prejudice

How It All Goes Down In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen tackles a common reality in England in the early 19th century women who lack a fortune need to marry well. By "well," we mean wealthy. So, any guy from a good family with large, steady income is fair game on the Marriage Hunt. Rich but unintelligent, unattractive, boring men? Mrs. Bennet says, "Bring it on!" To be fair, she does have five daughters who lack a fortune. When a certain (wealthy) Mr. Bingley moves into the neighborhood and is interested in her eldest daughter, Jane, Mrs. Bennet becomes deliriously happy and (to the extreme discomfort of her family and innocent spectators) tries to push them together in every way possible. It's not all roses and champagne just yet, however. While Mr. Bingley is easygoing and pleasant, his sisters are catty snobs whose attitude is encouraged by a certain Mr. Darcy. Good-looking, rich, and close friends with Mr. Bingley, Darcy is also insufferably proud and haughty. The Bennets are beneath him in social stature, so Mr. Darcy is proportionately disagreeable, particularly to Jane's younger sister Elizabeth. When Mr. Bingley suggests that Mr. Darcy ask Elizabeth to dance, Mr. Darcy replies that she isn't pretty enough. The two men accidentally carry on their conversation within earshot of Elizabeth. Ouch. It's clear to everyone that Mr. Bingley is falling in love with Jane, but Jane's calm temperament hides her true feelings (she loves him too). Elizabeth gossips about the situation with her close friend Charlotte Lucas, who argues that Jane needs to show affection or risk losing Mr. Bingley. Meanwhile, Mr. Darcy has finished maligning Elizabeth, and starts becoming attracted to her (something about her "fine eyes"). In any case, Mr. Bingley's sisters extend a dinner invitation to Jane, who (based on the recommendations of her mother) rides over to the Bingley mansion in the rain, gets soaking wet, falls ill, and has to remain in the Bingley household. Elizabeth arrives to nurse her sister and engage in some witty banter with Mr. Darcy. Astonished at his attraction, he keeps staring at Elizabeth, but she assumes he's being a jerk and trying to judge her. Back at Longbourn (the Bennet home), Mr. Collins arrives for a visit. As Mr. Bennet's closest male relative, Mr. Collins will inherit the estate after Mr. Bennet's death. Mr. Collins has decided that the nice thing to do is to marry one of the Bennet girls in order to preserve their home. It looks like he has his sights set on Elizabeth, but did we mention that he's a complete fool and worships his boss (a certain Lady Catherine)? It's clear that Elizabeth finds him repulsive. As for the two youngest Bennet sisters, the militia has arrived in town and they're ready to throw themselves at any officers who wander their way. They meet a charming young man named Mr. Wickham, who rapidly befriends Elizabeth. Wickham tells Elizabeth a sob story about how all of his life opportunities were destroyed by Mr. Darcy, convincing her that Darcy is Evil Personified. Elizabeth

readily believes Wickham's story, and also learns that Lady Catherine (Mr. Collins's boss) is Mr. Darcy's aunt. The next day, all the Bennet girls are invited to a ball at Netherfield (a.k.a. Mr. Bingley's mansion). Elizabeth is excited about possibly dancing with Wickham, and also excited to see Mr. Darcy and Mr. Wickham confront each other. At the ball, Wickham is absent, but Darcy asks Elizabeth to dance. So does Mr. Collins, whose dancing style is grotesquely embarrassing to Elizabeth. The rest of Elizabeth's family is no better: Mrs. Bennet brags to everyone that Bingley will likely propose to Jane, Mary and shows off her non-existent musical talent, and Lydia and Kitty are embarrassingly flirty with the military officers. The following morning, Mr. Collins proposes to Elizabeth, who practically has to beat him over the head before he believes her adamant refusal. We don't feel too bad for Mr. Collins because Elizabeth's friend, Charlotte Lucas, pretends to play wingman (or wingperson, if you like), but is really hunting for a proposal of her own. Mr. Collins does indeed step up, and Charlotte accepts. Elizabeth is shocked when she learns of their engagement. She has difficulty believing that Charlotte's good sense would allow her to marry such a ridiculous man. Charlotte explains, however, that she's a spinster with no prospects, and she'd rather have her own home than live with her parents forever. Basically, beggars can't be choosers. A letter arrives for Jane. It's from Miss Bingley, informing her that the entire Bingley group has left for London. Miss Bingley also sneakily implies that Mr. Bingley is really in love with Darcy's sister. Jane is heartbroken, but goes to London with her aunt and uncle in the hopes of winning Bingley back. Elizabeth also leaves home to visit the newly married Charlotte. Charlotte seems content. During her visit, Elizabeth receives a dinner invitation to Lady Catherine's estate, Rosings Park. While there, Lady Catherine subjects Elizabeth to the third degree, but Elizabeth takes it well. She learns that a visit from Darcy is imminent. When Darcy arrives, he and Elizabeth engage in more witty banter over the dinner table at Rosings. He frequently comes to visit at Charlotte's house, which confuses everyone since he doesn't say anything, doesn't look like he's having fun, and always stays less than ten minutes. Meanwhile, Elizabeth learns that Bingley was going to propose to Jane but that Darcy intervened. Naturally her dislike for Darcy intensifieswhich is exactly the moment Darcy chooses to propose. During the proposal, mixed in with Darcy's "I love you" are some "I am so superior to you" comments, which, not surprisingly, don't go over so well. Elizabeth rejects him and tells him off, saying that he isn't a gentleman. She cites both Wickham's story and Jane's broken heart as the two primary reasons for anger. The next day, Darcy hands Elizabeth a letter, asking her to read it. It contains the full story regarding Wickham (he's a liar, a gambler, and he tried to elope with Darcy's underage sister) and the full story regarding Jane (Darcy was convinced

Jane didn't love Bingley and so tried to save his friend from a woman simply attracted to his wealth). Elizabeth undergoes a huge emotional transformation and regrets her hasty actions. Once back at home, Lydia, the youngest of the Bennet girls, is invited to follow the officers to their next station in Brighton. Elizabeth strongly disapproves of the plan, but Mr. Bennet overrules her and allows Lydia to go off. Elizabeth's aunt and uncle ask her to accompany them on a trip to Derbyshire, which is, incidentally, where Mr. Darcy lives. They decide to visit his estate called Pemberley. Elizabeth agrees to go only after she learns that Mr. Darcy is out of town. Once at the estate, Elizabeth is impressed by its excellent taste and upkeep. Darcy's housekeeper also has nothing but compliments for her master. To Elizabeth's surprise, they run into Darcy, and, to her further surprise, he's immensely polite to her aunt and uncle. Darcy asks Elizabeth to meet his sister, who proves to be quite nice but very shy. Before we can finally tune up the violins and the wedding toasts, disaster strikes when Elizabeth learns that Lydia has run off with Wickham. This scandal could ruin the family, so Elizabeth's uncle and father try to track the renegade couple down. Elizabeth's uncle saves the day and brings the two young 'uns back as a properly married (and unapologetic) couple. When Lydia lets slip that Darcy was at her wedding, Elizabeth realizes that there's more to the story and writes to her aunt for more information. When her aunt replies, Elizabeth learns the full truth: Darcy was actually the one responsible for saving the Bennet family's honor. Personal Response After reading this novel, we find that Pride and Prejudice is a great book, a true classic. Every time we read it, we see it differently and understand something new about the characters. We tend to focus in on the minor characters and the way in which Austen, the author shows character alterations in the main characters (Darcy and Elizabeth). Also, the author creates a nice window into a historical era. We enjoyed the story even though at the beginning, it was rather slow and boring, but the characters were really interesting, even if some of them were obnoxious or unpleasant, and the observations Elizabeth made were great as she is able to observe the different human nature just like how she thought about Mr. Darcy as a proud and haughty man. But we can see that both learn and understand each other. Their pride and prejudice are vanished. But the shortcomings of the other characters are not changed. In the story, society is divided into classes where the author tried to harmonize the two extremes of middle class lower end and the top end into one. Bingleys marriage with Jane and Darcys with Elizabeth. It is her moral approach to rub the class distinction-line of society. In the novel, we learnt that pride prevents the characters from seeing the truth of a situation and from achieving happiness in life. Pride is one of the main barriers that creates an obstacle to Elizabeth and Darcy's marriage. Darcy's pride in his position in society leads him initially to scorn anyone outside of his own social circle. Elizabeth's vanity clouds her judgment, making her prone to think ill of Darcy and to think well of Wickham. Darcy's letter shows Elizabeth that her judgments were wrong and she realizes that they were based on vanity, not on reason.

Pride and prejudice are intimately related in the novel. Darcy's pride of place is founded on social prejudice, while Elizabeth's initial prejudice against him is rooted in pride of her own quick perceptions." Darcy, having been brought up in such a way that he began to scorn all those outside his own social circle, must overcome his prejudice in order to see that Elizabeth would be a good wife for him and to win

Elizabeth's heart. The overcoming of his prejudice is demonstrated when he treats the Gardiners with great civility. Furthermore, in the novel, Austen portrays the family as primarily responsible for the intellectual and moral education of children. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet's failure to provide this education for their daughters leads to the utter shamelessness, foolishness, and immorality of Lydia. Elizabeth and Jane have managed to develop virtue and strong characters in spite of the negligence of their parents. In a nutshell, we should apply these moral values in our daily lives in order to live harmoniously with the people around us. In general, pride is at the bottom of all great mistakes. On the other hand, prejudice stop us from loving other people despite of their flaws.
