Very few people are talented speakers.
Not even the ones who impress you on
television count to this category, as
most of what is televised is either
taped made with many cuts or simply
read from a professional writers script
on invisible prompters.
This guide gives some direct advice, and
a lot for you to think about before
your next presentation.

People act on emotions, like the classic handshake
being hundred times more powerful than the CV and
diploma. Almost everyone feels reluctant about
speaking in public.
A survey showed that the fear of speaking before an
audience rates much higher than the fear of dying.
As Jerry Seinfeld so elegantly put, it must mean that
youd rather be inside the casket than standing next
to it, giving the commemoration.
With this little guide book, we want to underline the
importance of being prepared for the presentation.
We are not trying to be patronizing, as every
speaker, every topic, every area and every public is
unique. We just want to share some of our expertise
in the eld of presentations. To convince. Obviously.
Thats all you have to do.
Best wishes from us at Explireo.

Excuse the ramsayish approach,
but to a professional like me, it is
utterly frustrating to see speaker
after speaker go on stage and
make spectacles of themselves by
substandard presentations. The
script is not adapted to the audience,
the speech is boring and the slides
are childish. Seeing so much time
being wasted and so many busi-
ness opportunities go down the
drain just breaks my heart.

There was a time when people were stunned by
motion picture and a music box with a spinning
ballerina.
Today with live TV in the cell phone, and animated
icons on the computer, you need a lot of power to
give a professional appearance at a presentation.
Many have mistaken professional for turbulence
using every available animation in the PowerPoint
to create hilarious presentations, where the presen-
tation effects completely overrule the message. This
is not a viable way.

Too many have misused
PowerPoint to shred the message
and the topic. To some people,
PowerPoint presentations are
greeted with a sigh, thus making
people go back to using boards
and overheads. We would like
to show you a different version -
how to make your convincing
presentation with a PowerPoint.

board or a celebrity, people will pay attention
to your presentation, all for different reasons.
This target group rarely gives any useful feed-

bound to get severe criticism. If you are well
known to the audience, in the business or in
your school or company, you carry a baggage.
Your reputation will always precede you and

Never argue with the hostile. You will nd
youll come much further if you agree. By
agreeing, you take the edge of the asker and
can regroup your thoughts to advance.
There may be directs by people who are well
informed on your topic but you can play these
direct questions back to make them become a
yesbut. The yesbuts may have genuine concern
about your issues, and you have to treat these
carefully in front of the audience. Losing the

Reporters - among others - often are
very well prepared for your presenta-
tion and wait until the right moment to
re off their questions directly at you
before the audience or a camera.
You are forced to immediately choose
one or the other. If the asker is out of
line or lying, tell this person so.
If the asker is backing the question on
previous or someone elses statements,
dodge the direct by admitting that
you have changed your mind.

Remember always to agree, never to

A lot of presentations are made in English. The
aid of simultaneous translation is rare. This is a
problem for both parties.
For the speaker, even in cases with excellent
English verbal skills, the excitement and
exhaustion may cause black-outs, pronuncia-
tion problems and errors, all spiraling into
worse.
The non-English listener has double trouble, as
he/she has to deal with native English (from
all continents) as well as substandard foreign
English.

English as a mother tongue means having an
advantage over e.g. German, French and
Scandinavian. Or maybe not... The objective with
a presentation is to be understood, not to show a
perfect grammar and pronunciation. When part of
or the audience is non-English, the native English
can be too fast, grammatically too advanced or
using words with tones that are not detectable to
the international listener. Native British/Americans
do tend to take for granted that everyone under-
stands the hidden code in expressions and
synonyms.

In order to make a good presentation, it is
vital to know how receptive the audience is.
Receptive towards you as a person, your
topic and your presentation.
Very few are born speakers. Even TV celebri-
ties like major talk show hosts have scripts
and prompters so that they simply read a
text that someone else has written. And
actors are trained on stage, and they are
- just acting. Some famous comedians seem
very dull off stage. But you have to be your-
self, the one and the same, on both sides.

Beneath our verbal expressions, we are
like any other animal. Look at the dogs
and horses, to a large extent they rely
only on expressions they pick up in the
one they are looking at. And so do we,
often with-out knowing. You have like two
seconds to make a rst impression. And
that is easy. The hard part is having the
energy to keep your body language over
the entire presentation. Practice, rehearse

There are three stereotypes of seemingly
good presenter: the politician, the news
anchor and the stand-up comedian.
Let yourself not be impressed by neither of
them because they are all fake. People in
leading positions and teachers/professors
also tend to perceive themselves as being
better speakers than they actually are, as the
audience withhold criticism. We offer services
that include direction on stage, speech ther-
apy and rehearsals with video.
However, seeing yourself on video may be
a very intimidating experience.

Politicians are experienced speakers,
often it is the same performance every
day. Getting appraisal from empty
promises is easy. By waving the arms
like a windmill, they generate a body
language that is meant to give them a
vivid look. The politicians you see on
stage are far from the person their fellow
politicians meet over conference tables
and behind closed doors. It is all an act.

One of the hardest things is knowing
what to look at. Where to place the
eyes. Nothing will give away as
much as your eyes - the mirror of
your soul. When your total focus is
on giving a good presentation, dont
let your eyes wander off. Obviously,
the closer you are to the audience,
the more they can see. But todays
technology at larger events places
the speakers face on a large video
screen for everyone to see. Practice
over and over again, and teach your
eye reexes to stay focused.
D O N T L E AV E T H E R O O M
One of the most common mistake
is letting the eyes drift off and
focus, for instance, at a distant
point outside. Or at some xture
in the room. Try to make a frame
around the audience and dont let
the focal point leave this area.
If it makes you feel comfortable,
occasionally turn around and look
at the screen.

With a script in your hands, you will have a natural

It is absolutely forbidden to go onto the stage and
read out loud, the entire text of the script. Still, we
even see leading politicians do this. (We also see
news anchors and other high paid TV people, just
their text is invisible to the viewer...) Reading will
evidently solve the memory problem, but it will make
the presentation boring and you fail on all points.
It is better to get lost and make mistakes, than
reading loud.

If you have a good memory, are an expert and have
some practice, you can use the presentation as your
memory card. We have some special tricks for the
professionals. But it is better to have memory cards,
than to miss out on vital points or have to back, thus
losing in the logic ow of the presentation.
M E M O R Y C A R D S
No one expects you to remember exactly so cards are
a good solution. Keep the text large. The only problem
you will be getting is when changing slide, that you
either dont remember to change card or change twice
and get lost. Just be careful so that your hands are not
unknowingly playing with your cards and mix them.
Have a large number on each to keep track.

computer and click forward. As we have previously
written, the hands seem to live their own life when
we speak, you may very easily nger the buttons on
the remote, causing the presentation to switch pre-
maturely. If you feel very comfortable with a remote,
this is excellent. If it makes you nervous, stick to the
keyboard principle.
U S I N G T H E M O U S E
A loose mouse (as opposed to a mouse integrated
on the keyboard) means clicking moves forward.
The wheel in the middle of the mouse, however,
can accidentally be touched, moving you forward
or backward ten steps, setting you to off balance.
We would like to propose that the mouse is the
least suitable of the three alternatives. You are still
tied to the computer, even if you have an infra
red or cordless mouse, and you need a table to
support the mouse. If you have a menu where you
need to select and click, the mouse is the only
alternative.

Most often, you have a
time slot that you are
supposed to/allowed to
ll. Typically, this is 30 or
45 minutes. Apart from it
being generally rude,
drawing over causes frus-
tration not only among the
organizers but also with
the audience. When people
start looking at their
watches and toying with
their phones, this is a
token that the time is out.
On the other hand, being
short may be interpreted
as very negative.

Finding the ruler that measures time
when preparing the presentation is
very individual. Compared to
rehearsing, the real-life presenta-
tion usually goes mush faster, as
you tend to speak faster due to the
nerves. If the room has a wall
clock, note the time you get on
stage. Have a large visible wrist-
watch handy on the table but dont
let the hands on the clock jitter
your nerves to speed up the
speech.

Making a too short presentation can be effective, but
your message is probably too thin to make an effective
short. In a world with male incentives, speaking long
means having something important to say. If you
dont have a set time frame, plan ahead to ll out at
least half an hour. Make provisions for you to elabo-
rate on some details if you nd that there is time left.
T I M E C R A S H
One nightmare a presenter can face is having the
time frame cut just before going on stage. Make a
plan how to handle such a situation by listing points
that can be left out if you need to speed up. Some
chapters need not to be shown in detail, e.g. and by
arranging the PowerPoint in a way that you can
choose detail or overview is a good idea.
T O O L O N G
When timing the presentation during rehearsal,
people have a tendency to yada-yada through boring
parts, thus causing the rehearsal to be too short. You
must also allow for questions and interruptions for
type 1 as well as type 2 presentations. One trick is
to have one nal bonus chapter that can be
unnoticeably omitted if you run out of time. In stead
of making excuses that you have too little time
(which implies you have planned improperly), one
usable phrase is saying I hope you will let me come
back soon and tell you more about if you need
to fast-forward one part.

Please excuse the blunt language.
But really, the speech is raw, the
train of thoughts is badly pre-
pared, the PowerPoint is over-
cooked and avored with mis-
matching herbs and the presenta-
tion is gruesomely unappetizing.
No wonder the speaker has no
success with the audience; he/she
would be a complete failure as a
chef.

As said before, your presentation consists of
two parts: you and your PowerPoint (slide show,
black board or whatever visual aid you are
having). You must carry the topic to the audience.
The distribution of importance between these
two is impacted by
the composition of your audience
the arena

more explicit power to penetrate and
take effect. Whereas David Beckham
probably could enchant a boyish

Before selling, you need to explain. Based on the
know-how-level of the target group, the facts must be
given in an educational way. A logic ow aided by
photos, illustrations and motion picture will give the
audience the information necessary to form a buying
decision.

Before selling, you must convince. The convincing is
made mainly by giving the right impression. The right
impression is obtained from a good PowerPoint and a
well performed delivery on stage. The right impression
generates trustworthiness and people will believe you
and believe in you.
