Secondary Lesson Plan Template Grade level and subject discipline: Length of class: 11th & 12th grade

Environmental 90 minutes Science LEARNING TARGETS

5L: I can compare/contrast waste management techniques (landfills and incinerators) 5N: I can assess the environmental impact of various materials 5P: I can explain how hazardous waste is generated and managed

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Students will be able to Describe how hazardous waste can impact health as well as communities Compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of landfills and incinerators Provide rationale for why some communities should choose landfills over incinerators Assess the environmental implications of materials such as paper, plastic, metal and glass as well as other types of municipal solid waste Identify cases in history where hazardous waste sites have contributed to relevant real world issues Discuss how hazardous waste could impact their own lives KNOWLEDGE SKILLS (What skills (e.g., how to compute binary equations, how to solve problems using the scientific method, how to identify a theme, Students will already need to know etc.) will they need to have be taught in order to basic knowledge about landfills and accomplish these objectives?) incinerators from the previous class in order to compare and contrast the two. Students will have to be taught how to differentiate between hazardous waste and general municipal solid waste. RESOURCES/MATERIALS NEEDED (What materials and resources will I use?): Elmo projector White Boards The Love Canal journal articles (3 different reading levels) The Love Canal discussion questions ASSESSMENT (How will I know if students achieve the learning goals/objectives?): I will formatively assess student understanding by asking questions as I walk around and help students work through the discussion questions in groups. I will also collect the discussion sheets after class, check over them quickly and then hand them back. If there are any questions that students seemed to struggle on, then I will bring them back and discuss as a large group. I will also check for depth of the answers to give me an idea of how well students understand the content.

To summatively assess understanding, there will be a quick write quiz that asks students to describe what hazardous waste is in their own words as well as how it can be prevented and laws that the EPA has put in place. There will also be a question to assess their ability to differentiate between different waste disposal options as well as their impacts on the environment. LEARNING PLAN (How will you organize student learning? What instructional strategies will you use? How will you scaffold for student learning?) (Write in outline format).

1. Science Starter (12 min) In groups, use the white boards to compare and contrast landfills to
incinerators. What are the pros and cons of each? Think about the cost of each option, the amount of land space required as well as environmental impacts. Go over learning objectives and plan for the day. Whole class discussion on landfills vs. incinerators (15 min) I will write key ideas shared out of groups on the large whiteboard so that students have a master organizer to leave class with that has the major points on it. Ask students: How are the environmental impacts of a landfill different that the impacts of an incinerator? How can you differentiate between the purposes of the two? Hazardous waste notes (5 min) Watch The Love Canal Documentary (YouTube-modern marvels part 1 & 2) (13 min) The Love Canal Discussion questions and leveled readings (35 min) All students will receive the same discussion questions but I will pass out different leveled readings. One of the readings is at a sixth grade level meet students that need a lower reading level, one is at a tenth grade level which meets almost all of our students needs and the third is the original article from an environmental science journal which will challenge those students at a higher reading level. By giving out leveled readings, all students have fair and equal access to the content while still being held to the same standards because they are being asked to discuss the same questions. Exit ticket assessment (10 min) Describe hazardous waste in your own words. In what ways have actions that the EPA has taken had an impact on hazardous waste disposal and removal? Differentiate between the three waste disposal options we have discussed in class and describe their environmental impacts. Describe and defend the type of waste management techniques you would employ in a large over populated city.
