Excerpted & revised section on : CANCER, the 4th sign

[ A study of Cancer as a sign, with some reference to it as an Ascendant ]

Date of this revision: 16th December, 2005; revision # B-0

This is primarily a discussion of Cancer as a sign of the zodiac, which represents the natural 4th house. It is not especially a discussion of it as the Ascendant or as the Sun Sign or the Moon sign. Each sign, when it becomes the actual Ascendant, places different signs in the different houses of the horoscope, because of the blending of which a unique picture emerges. This picture is further very dramatically and deeply modified by the placements of the different planets, and the numerous varied combinations they form in each individual horoscope.

Note: A study of all the signs, specifically as Ascendants, is in a later group of

lectures, and also in Star*Book

Shri Mann: Session 3, A-4, and the date today is the 5th of May, 1990, and this is

Tape 1, Side 1. We will continue our discussion on the signs. We covered Aries through Gemini in the last session, and now we are going to discuss Cancer, Leo and Virgo. I have said to you that certain signs statistically indicate a greater percentage of famous or successful persons. What that also means is that some signs are naturally more ambitious. They, more often, possess an inherent drive, which we can define as a natural momentum towards achievement. In other words, some signs are more restless, aggressive and action oriented. Nevertheless, all signs possess a potential to be great, and we have successful people from every sign in every field of endeavour in the world. Like seeds, potentials are what a sign, a house, a planet represents. Potentials are of two kinds broadly. The first consists of talents and energies. The second is of the nature of propensities, proclivities. The first type of potentials are neither good nor bad in themselves, and can be developed and used by the individual in any chosen manner. The second type of potential is the one which actually represents the propensity toward certain choices and directions, which decides the chosen manner for the expression of the first type of potential. It is always this second potential which needs to be identified, understood and worked with first and most importantly. This is because this second potential directs and employs the elements of the first potential. From this it will be easy for you to distinguish between the nature of potentials being referred to in the discourses here. I have brought this subtle and vital matter to your attention since it will be of indispensable value in the proper appraisal of astrological factors and in the correct understanding of any individual horoscope. Without it your advice or guidance will be little value to the recipient.

In actual life, you see many individuals possessed of much energy, great intelligence and many talents, but you find that they have no wisdom, no altruism. Instead, they employ their abilities in ways and in areas which decency frowns upon. This reflects the misuse of the first potential because of the second. The horoscopes of the renowned as well as of the notorious, both have many identical statements regarding the first potential - but they differ in their statements concerning the second one. Yet, let us remember that even the second one, in the beginning, is only a potential, not an active force. Where this potential can be recognised early enough and seen to be negative, then, if the proper approach can be brought to bear upon it first by the parents and family, then by society, and finally by the individual, it can be altered and moulded into a much more constructive and desirable one. A few closing comments on this matter. Most potentials of the first type, in their more simple or rudimentary form, are usually within the province of the individual 36 astrological elements. However, the second type of potential is reflected more in their combinations, especially in the more complex ones. For example, the sign Gemini expresses the potential of dexterity, but Mars in Gemini can indicate that the dexterity may be used for martial purposes. Yet, it will take a particular ascendant and certain other attendant conditions to indicate the use of the martial dexterity for, let us say, criminal purposes. I should add that the more sophisticated and precise indications of even the first type of potentials are to be found in the more complex combinations. Now, it is easier for some signs to be involved with certain things and not so for others. Another important aspect of this is that the potentials of some can more easily be activated towards the negative or the positive. For example, Aries natives are energy expenders. Their cardinal feature is energy. They usually have an abundance of physical, mental and emotional energy. This needs wise direction, without which it is more likely to go into violence or even into criminal activities. Properly directed, it could flow towards constructive applications and wonderful achievements, pioneering enterprises, daring and bold enterprises which can greatly help them to make a mark in the world. Similarly, Gemini is curious, inquisitive. It is interested in discovering, knowing and learning. Now, that is the potential for being a good student and for learning. However, it too can express in different ways. It can more easily make the native very fickle and unreliable, an inconsequential chatter-bug. Yet, given the right awareness and proper effort it can fructify into the kind of representation which Einstein gives us. Einstein had Gemini rising. If we accept the conventional appraisal of him, he manifested a keen probing intellect, and left an memorable name in the scientific field. The symbolic meaning of his example remains intact, though, the true or ultimate value of his achievements remains dubious, whether or not, in his particular case, he did steal his theories from his first wife, as one book suggests. So, when we talk about signs, or any astrological factor, we must bear in mind that we are only exploring, defining and understanding potentials which always have two poles. Today we will begin with the sign Cancer. In our discussions on signs, we should not keep the natural house, which each different sign represents, out of the picture, nor the ruler of the sign, because the qualities of the ruler is intertwined with the qualities of the sign, and the house representations are intertwined with the representations of the sign and its ruling planet. So, the natural 4th sign is also the natural 4th house, Cancer. When we speak of houses, we address them by numbers, e.g., we say the 4th house, but what is the natural 4th house? If the natural first sign Aries was rising we would have Cancer falling in the 4th house. This means that the natural 4th sign is also the natural 4th house, even though in any

particular chart, it does not occupy the 4th house. Cancer signifies home, mother, maternal matters. It is governed by the Moon, and the Moon is the feminine principle in creation, in the universe, in our solar system. We look at the Sun as the creative, active male principle, and we look at the Moon as the feminine, passive or receptive, female principle. The female principle is always indicative of maternal matters and of sensitivity, of emotion, of feeling. So, Cancer represents feeling, sentiment, emotion, i.e., matters of the deeper heart, and that is why this sign also represents peace. Leo also signifies the heart, but in a different manner, as you will see. Before going further, I think it will be useful to broadly define the meaning of a word which I have used earlier, and will be using frequently in the future. When I use the word afflicted, it implies a number of possible conditions which can indicate a negative influence on a sign, house or planet. In other words, it is a troubling, disturbing or weakening influence. In time, a detailed understanding of these conditions should develop. However, I will here define a very important astrological principle which I refer to as the law of gravity and which you will become very familiar with in due time. What this suggests is that regardless of any afflictions, by natural law all things in general tend in a downward direction or toward a lower, lesser state. This is meant as an abstract statement which applies pervasively not only to all concrete objects, functions and processes, but also to those of consciousness. In human life and affairs it produces a natural leaning or tendency toward mediocrity and lesser or lower expressions, and from the astrological perspective, this is an expected influence regardless of any affliction. This implies that the lesser, the more common or base expression is more likely unless an individual strives consciously for a more elevated one. A proper understanding and application of the knowledge and awareness gifted by this science can be one of the most effective and useful weapons as well as tools for eliminating this natural burden which weighs on individual human beings and mankind as a whole. If Cancer or the 4th house is very afflicted, there is no peace of mind. Home life is disturbed. Maternal matters are affected adversely. The mother suffers in some way or relations with the mother can be troubled or difficult. The entire emotional dimension becomes subject to many disturbances. These are just general statements about an afflicted condition of Cancer. But, when Cancer is prominent or emphasised in the chart, it also lends tremendous sensitivity and emotionalism to the personality. The maternal instinct becomes stronger, as does the possessive and, therefore, the controlling aspect also intensifies. Matters pertaining to progeny and children also become highlighted in one manner or another. When this sign is in the ascendant, even the slightest affliction to the signifiers of children or progeny, can indicate problems, trials, even tragedies concerning children or somehow related to children. On the other hand, sometimes their children shine, even become illustrious or become the source of some major gain or growth. Often enough, both aspects are manifested - the positive as well as the negative, the glorious as well as the tragic. We should also note that it is a cardinal sign. The element is water. And the gender is female. The colour it represents is cream. The pearl is its gem and its day is Monday. The number of Cancer is Two, because that is the number of the Moon. The word Monday is derived from the word MONA which means Moon. Its symbol is the crab, though I feel that the oyster, too, is a symbol of great significance for it. The oyster shell is similar to a womb, a cradle and a shelter, both of which are maternal significations. The oyster nurtures and protects the baby, i.e., the pearl, in its shell. The pearl is a gem which requires moisture to

keep it from cracking and peeling, and needs to be stored in such places as provide moisture. Water and moisture are representative of emotion, and Cancer individuals need environments which provide it. A student: Cardinal would be what? Shri Mann: Motility is of three types - cardinal, fixed and mutable. Cardinal means the quality of moving forward, only, moving in the forward direction. Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn are all cardinal signs. So, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th, signs and houses form the Cardinal cross. Then we have Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius as fixed signs. This quality is exactly what the word means, i.e., fixed. They do not easily move, they do not change their minds easily, they are somewhat stubborn, they do not budge from whatever they feel, think or have decided to do. They do not easily yield to persuasion. Therefore, there is a stability to them but, at the same time, they have the potential to be so fixed that it becomes rigidity, which can be quite an obstacle to their own growth and cause many problems for others. It can lead to stagnation as well to other difficulties. As we carry on, I will be mentioning little things which are useful to know now, but will really become meaningful later. Cardinal signs, by virtue of being always forward oriented, forward moving, are signs that rarely regret what they have done in general. There is not too much retrospection, reviewing of decisions, examination of past things, all of which are matters in which mutable signs can profitably invest or waste a lot of time. This also contributes to their success because they simply keep moving forward - to avoid any misunderstanding, I wish to say that this is not a criticism or endorsement of this Cardinal quality, but simply an observation. Then, we have the mutable signs, and what are the mutable signs? Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. It will be well to remember that they are ruled by only two planets, Mercury and Jupiter. These are the mutable signs, changing, moving backward and forward all the time. They cannot decide easily and they do not accept a verdict on an issue without re-examination, whether it is been given by an authority or whether it is coming from themselves. They need to review and re-examine, and in the process, often find themselves unable to make any decision, but, in bargain, they also end up with a lot of information, and a many-faceted view of every issue. So, they make wonderful conversationalists. Their conversation is interesting because they have so much information, but if you ask them to make an important decision you may have a problem. Cancer is a cardinal sign, forward moving and, yet, its symbol is the crab. Now, we know that the crab moves forward, comes back to the rock under which it has found shelter, and will move out again and come back, and that it clings tenaciously to the rock. Its seeking of the rock and clinging to it express three important features of the sign Cancer: its domestic nature, its possessiveness and its insecurity. These attributes are found in Cancer natives in general. There is usually a home oriented side as well as a possessive side. There is a great desire for family, for the domestic life. They feel there should be a family, there should be people who love, who care, who are there for them. When afflicted, it can be extremely controlling. It can try to control, rule, dictate, usually out of good intentions, unless very severely afflicted, in which case, it can have criminal tendencies, but that is a different story. Yet, if it is a little imbalanced, we will often find Cancer men and women ruling their spouses or trying to make decisions for them. These are potential negative characteristics of the Cancer-Capricorn axis. Rarely is a Cancer spouse the initiating partner in a divorce. They may be the cause of it, but they are rarely the initiating party in a divorce, because they

will not easily give up what they have acquired. This is so whether it is a material possession, a position or a relationship. However, this sign sits differently on men and women. This is something which we will briefly discuss right now. Later on we shall review it in greater detail. Normally, male signs sit better as ascending signs on men, and female signs sit better on women. Now, that is a very general kind of a statement which does not, in fact, give us any concrete basis to draw conclusions concerning any particular individual, because there are many Cancer rising women who can be very shrewish, harsh or touchy; while there are many Cancer ascending males who are very pleasant and reasonable. Yet, as a general statement, it should not be forgotten. The Moon does not have any light of its own. It literally lives on borrowed light, so there is an insecurity in this sign. See, when you do not own something, when it is not your own, some insecurity is bound to be caused by that, and that is found in the Cancer native very frequently. Insecurity. Now, if afflicted, in women this can turn into shrewishness, nagging, touchiness, a general self-defensiveness. Anything said to them which is not entirely complimentary can be taken as a offence or even a direct assault, and because of the insecurity there, the response can be very extreme which can take people by surprise. Again, there intent may not be bad at all, but only an irrational reaction caused by their insecurity. By the same token, the Cancer native is very susceptible to compliments and can be very easily flattered and exploited or manipulated. There is almost a pathos to their naivet or gullibility in being unable or unwilling to discern between sycophancy and sincere praise. In men, when afflicted, it can take a different turn. It can indicate a macho expression. They behave in a more aggressive, more tough, more masculine manner. In other words, there is an exaggerated maleness about them. Essentially, it is a tough front which conceals a weak personality. Again, we need certain types of afflictions for that expression. Unfortunately, such afflictions are not uncommon and, so, many times we find extreme machismo in Cancer rising males. Because of the sensitivity that this sign involves there is also a potential, on the positive side, for a lot of goodness, kindness, generosity and a caring. However, at the same time, wherever emotions are stronger you always find reason (rationality) suffering some degree of neglect. Therefore, reasonability is usually not their strong feature, it is not their forte. You cannot generally label them as being very reasonable, though this sign is usually extremely intelligent. Which is not to say that they are always arguing, quarrelling or fighting. It essentially means that if an emotional matter is involved then it will be more an instinctive feeling which will govern their argument or decision, and not necessarily the logical, intellectually visible perspective which will determine the approach or the decision. However, they may not perceive their decisions and actions as dominantly or basically emotional ones. They are more likely to consider them quite objective and rational, since this sign, actually this axis, has more of a tendency to justify its actions and risks as having their basis in reason. But, even more importantly, they often actually convince themselves of this, and do really believe it to be so. It is an impulsive and moody sign. Cancer natives can be very verbal or talkative, but they can also be very quiet and withdrawn periodically. It is unusual to find a Cancer who does not enjoy talking and does not do a great deal of it.

Cancer is ruled by the Moon. What is the Moon? The Moon is a satellite of the Earth, deriving all its light from the Sun. It has no light of its own. This is important to understand at this point, so that later on when we compare the two luminaries, you will appreciate their similarities and differences better. The Moon mimics the Sun. The Moon is shining only when the Sun is not visible. That is when it shines and, at that time, it is acting like the Sun. Then, it is duplicating and mimicking the Sun. What is acting? Duplicating, mimicking the emotions and feelings of others. For this reason, Cancer natives make excellent actors, and also because they are able to simulate the feelings of others in themselves. All fields which involve emotional expression suit them. However, when afflicted, it also governs forgers, plagiarists, impersonators, duplicators, because the Moon is a duplicator of the Sun. Therefore, it signifies duplication of any and all kinds, including that which is done with the intent to cheat or deceive. It should also be noted that duplication is either a borrowing or a stealing. You see, there are different types of duplications. One person uses anothers idea or creation and openly acknowledges it, saying I have used it as a basis, and built upon it. I have modified it. The idea is there, but I have given it a new dimension, a new added meaning or a different expression. There is no intent to cheat or deceive there. Then there is plagiarism, where the intent is to conceal the borrowed basis of ones work or creations, and to make them seem ones own. An afflicted Cancer is more likely to be a plagiarist. Another kind of duplication is forgery, whether it is of someones signature or of their creations. These can include things of many kinds, the copying or duplicating of which somehow brings profit. In this case, the duplicator does not claim to be their creator, but deceives others into believing that another is their author or creator. This type of duplication is signified more by an afflicted Gemini. In other words, the negative potential expression of Cancer tends more toward plagiarism, while that of Gemini inclines more toward forgery, though both these kinds of duplications or duplicities are negative potentials of both these signs. Incidentally, impersonation is a negative potential which is common to both, as are thieving and stealing. Cancer is also a signifier of deputies, stand-ins, second-in-commands, etc.. This is from its role as queen to the king, i.e., to the Sun. As the second celestial light, which is a reflected or borrowed one, it gains these significations. There are some similarities between the Moon and Mercury, since it is also the chief minister or advisor to the king, a representative, an ambassador or emissary, a helper, assistant or 2nd lieutenant. The Sun is the king, and all the planets form the court. Mercury is also the counsellor or advisor to the king. Mars is the general. Jupiter is the high priest. The Moon is the queen, and Venus is the courtesan. Saturn is the servant. Perhaps, we will later more completely define the differences between the characters of the Moon and Mercury in the role of deputy, however, at this point I will tell you that the Moon tends to use the authority vested in it in a more arbitrary manner, almost like a personal power, while Mercury adheres more closely to the bounds of the mandate. In other words, an undistorted Mercury does not lose sight of its subordinate status in the process of executing its commission. Cancer or the Moon, act more as would a queen, who though subordinate, symbolises shared authority with the king, and uses it more freely. Treason, betrayal or usurping are negative potentials of both, Gemini as well as Cancer, but are precipitated by and expressed in differing ways. Generally speaking, Cancer is more likely than Gemini to be the usurper or carry such ambitions. Cancer governs the breasts, the teats, and all milks, especially mothers milk. Providing milk is an integral function of motherhood, and therefore it has direct rulership over the area of the breasts and milk, lactation. It is a co-signifier of nutrition in general, especially that of a fluid nature. These are the kinds of things which you will find very

file://H:\ASTRO LESSONS- KB MANN\4Cancer.htm

2/3/2011

Stellistics~Jyotish~Astrology lecture on the sign Cancer

useful practically when judging horoscopes. All questions pertaining to milk and lactation will find reflection in Cancer, the 3rd and the 4th house. I mentioned the 3rd house, because this house, too, has a say in the matter of the breasts (which are also a twin set), especially their upper part, and it has an important connection with the mammary sensations and sensitivity. Calcium, and calcium metabolism, are also in the jurisdiction of Cancer and the Moon, since it is one of the most important nutritional elements of milk,. Shelters are governed by Cancer. Havens, shelters, refuges are governed by Cancer, though their most significant ruler is Pisces. Cancer is the first but not highest indicator of these. What is the first refuge, the first shelter of a human being? It is the womb, which is one of the areas which is powerfully co-governed by Cancer along with Scorpio. We will go into the role of Scorpio later. The womb is the first refuge, the first shelter. So, Cancer and the 4th house govern all shelters, all havens, and the home since it is also a shelter, a refuge. So, we have this as an important signification as well. Cancer and, therefore, its ruler, the Moon, are signifiers of all matters related to the root area of maternity. Fertility is essential to maternity, which depends on its receptivity to seeding. Cancer and the Moon are, therefore, the most distinct symbols of the womb, which is the primary home of the seed, then of the embryo, then of the infant. For this reason, they signify the home, and by extension, the motherland. So, they can be very patriotic but, negatively, this can manifest as a tribal instinct which fails to see the unity of all human beings, the universal brotherhood of mankind. By law of gravity, this is much more often the case, and results in a paranoid and insecure state of mind, frequently producing bigots, zealots and fanatics. Cancer ascending natives can be relatively more autocratic in positions of power or leadership, than most other signs. Just as a mother is not only protective but also, quite often, possessive of her child, so is Cancer of anything it attaches itself to, be it power, position, ideology, religion or whatever else. It can be extremely self-willed, stubborn and intractable. The more opposition they face, the more obdurate, the more uncompromising and entrenched in their position they become. Due to different afflictions, in many Cancer natives, the sense of self often does not mature sufficiently, which leaves them more needy of and dependant on approval, praise and applause from others sometimes this can be so extreme that an absence of these from any quarter is perceived as hostility, and anyone who disagrees with them is considered an enemy. Underdeveloped Cancer natives expect, even demand, unquestioning if not blind loyalty. By the same token, they can be extremely, even unconditionally loyal to those who agree with them and support them or for whom they have respect or affection in fact, they usually have respect or affection chiefly for those who agree with them and support them. The dominant propelling force which directs their course or actions is not logic or reason but impulses, feelings, emotions, affections, desires, ambitions and beliefs. However, most Cancer natives consider themselves very reasonable, intelligent, rational and competent. This self-view is a strong thread through the Cancer-Capricorn (4th-10th house) axis. Pure fluids, all pure fluids are governed by this sign - not poisons, not liquors, not chemicals, but pure fluids. So, again, how do you apply these things? Here is an example of how you can apply them. Let us say, someone asks you a question about the contents of a bottle. You cannot see what is in it, and the question is, "Does it contain milk, wine or poison?" You cast a chart for the time the question was asked, and your signifier is the Moon or it is Cancer, well then it definitely contains milk. If the signifier is Pisces, the bottle is most probably filled with wine, and if it is Scorpio or Mars, well we can be almost certain

file://H:\ASTRO LESSONS- KB MANN\4Cancer.htm

Stellistics~Jyotish~Astrology lecture on the sign Cancer

that it contains a poison. A student: So, the chart will be cast for the time when the question was asked? Shri Mann: Yes. That is horary astrology. But, all of these branches or specialised forms, arise out of what we are studying now, which are the basic influences. After you complete your study of natal horoscopy, you can further specialise in different fields of astrology. There is also Mundane astrology which deals with countries, corporations, the stock market, but that also comes out of these basics. So, what does the Moon do? It waxes and it wanes. Its size, form and light are never constant. Therefore, there is in the Cancer influence, a cyclic waxing and a waning, a changefulness in different ways. It brings this influence very broadly into play in the sign and house it occupies, though it is not always or only of a negative nature. Change can be for the better or worse. If Cancer (or the Moon) occupies the 7th house, it would exert a change inducing influence on partnerships, marriage, public related matters, etc. If Cancer (or the Moon) occupies the 9th house, it causes a cyclicity, an ebb and tide in 9th house affairs, in the area of destiny and father, since the 9th house is a signifier of destiny as well as father-figures, gurus, teachers. For Scorpio rising, Cancer would be in the 9th house The natives life direction and personality tend to go through cycles of change. In phases, the nature becomes more aggressive and then more timid, more social and then more reclusive. It goes through varying mental/emotional phases, and also there are cycles of prosperity and poverty, success and failure, peace and unrest. I am referring to these just in passing right now. Later on, we will be discussing the 9th sign and house in detail. The basic underlying nature of Cancer is very intense, emotional and ambitious. It is one of the most ambitious of signs. Basically, all Cardinal signs are ambitious signs. The four signs which we discussed, are all ambitious signs. Cancer is usually politically very astute or shrewd. It is one of the best signs for political success and achievement, but usually it is not very fortunate in this field in the long run. In fact, many politicians have this as the ascendant or it is strongly fortified in their charts. Why is that? Because the 4th is also the home, one's homeland and compatriots. The ability to influence one's compatriot's is exactly what is needed by a politician. The Cancer native can naturally project an aura of being a family member to his fellow countrymen, and instinctively knows how to play on their emotions. There is also an inherent patriotic and emotional appeal in their persona. Their appeal to the public is not of an intellectual or rational nature, but of an emotional and sentimental character. Thus we see the potential of political prowess indicated in the Cancer influence. A student: I know of a politician who had Cancer rising. Shri Mann: Not surprising. In the horoscopes of approximately 2,500 politicians which I had, almost 30% of them were Cancer rising. By rule of averages, this number should only be roughly 8 percent. What else? The 4th house is, as I said, the homeland, the home, the mother. Well, that gives birth to patriotism, since it is the extended home. What do you do once you grow up a little? You begin by defending your family. You begin by wanting to secure and protect your home, your family. By extension, your homeland, your motherland becomes your

file://H:\ASTRO LESSONS- KB MANN\4Cancer.htm

2/3/2011

Stellistics~Jyotish~Astrology lecture on the sign Cancer

extended family. That is exactly how the patriotic sentiment develops. We begin by first becoming very concerned about and very protective of our home to ensure that it is secure, and has all necessities, comforts and full safety. Then we extend it a little further to our neighbourhood and, as we grow older, to the entire country in which we live, because all along the way we are also being told that it is our larger mutual home, our homeland. In various ways the impression is reinforced that it is our motherland, our mother. Thus, the ideas of mother, home, family and country, become deeply associated in our minds. Patriotism grows out of that. Now that the whole country is viewed as one's home, any threat to it is then construed as a threat to ones personal existence. So, that is the principle on which the Cancer nature can become extremely patriotic, not infrequently, even to the point of fanaticism. As it is family and home oriented, it can also be very homeland oriented. Yet, what is bigotry born out of? What is prejudice born out of? It is usually the product of fanaticism which is itself born out of an excessive attachment to any group, ideology, philosophy, religion or institution, accompanied by a blind belief in its superiority and importance and whatever it represents. So, you find the afflicted Cancer nature taking that twist as well, and becoming bigoted and narrow-minded, even a racist. On the other hand, if Cancer (and the Moon) is not afflicted, it can be very broadminded. You see, by virtue of the same principle, it can be extremely cosmopolitan, broadminded. It can view the whole world, the whole cosmos as its home, its country. So, when it does not have afflictions, it can manifest as a very large and very healthy perspective of the world. All the maternal organs and functions have a relationship to Cancer. Strong afflictions to Cancer can also mean problems with the reproductive system. The mammary glands are part of the reproductive system, and the natal process is very much part of the mother principle, the giving of birth. So, if we want to paint a portrait of it, this is how I would see it. I would not sketch is as a single symbolic person. Two, though one by their bond, reflect it much more fully. It would be a woman with a child, a homely, maternal woman with a child. Such a woman is more the natural expression of the Moon. Women are represented in horoscopes by two planets - Venus and the Moon, but, with a difference. Venus represents the more sophisticated, the more romantic, sensual and voluptuous aspect of womanhood. If we were to paint an image, Venus would be more the courtesan, and the Moon would be more the mother. There will be an inflection of glamour to the Venusian indication of woman. There will be more a reflection of her as the lover, as the paramour, as the romantically and sensually desirable, beautiful woman. An exaggeration of this image would result in the depiction of the femme fatale. However, the Moon would represent the more homely, the more home-bound, simpler but yet still lovely looking, motherly woman, possessing a deeper emotional appeal. So, the Moon strongly represents the maternal principle, while we find the amorous, the seductive and the romantic principle in Venus. This distinction is useful to remember because you could employ it in many ways when questions are asked. For instance, if you want to know the nature of the relationship between two persons, if the Sun or Venus or their signs appear as indicators, it is a romantic relationship. If Cancer or the Moon is your indicator, it is a more emotional or maternal one, and most likely of a non-romantic nature. These are the kinds of things which at this time may not seem that important, but if kept in mind, there will be many occasions when they can be practically applied and can actually provide keys to so many things which otherwise would not be possible to properly analyse. Before we move on, I want to mention that Venus and Moon, as the only two

feminine planets in a male dominated zodiac, are both signifiers of females in general and of the maternal principle. Of course, the most natural and powerful signification of this area always belongs to the Moon. However, there is a principle whereby Venus becomes a specific Karak or special indicator for the mother if the birth is during the daytime, while the Moon becomes Karak for her in the case of nocturnal birth. More on this in due time. The entire reproductive system and the menstrual cycle are co-ruled by the Moon and Cancer. I said co-ruled because Scorpio and Mars have much to do with them. You will later learn how Scorpio rules the reproductive organs and functions, and the menstrual flow as an excretion and as venous blood. When there is affliction to the Moon or to Cancer in a woman's horoscope, it can indicate disruptions and disorders in the menstrual cycle, since the ovaries are ruled by the Moon in conjunction, of course, with Venus. The connection of Venus with this area will be dealt with later, because Venus has a special influence, as ruler of the 7th sign/house. If you were to look at the portrait of this mother-child couple, you will have this homely, clean, fair or pale, round faced, slightly plump young woman as the mother. Now, this is a very perfect, though not a typical model of the lunar influence. It should not be taken too literally because you will not meet it frequently in its perfect form, i.e., the round and pale-faced, well-fleshed, slightly plump lady who is also homely and very maternal and nurturing. Now, what does this child represent? It signifies the child-principle. You see, the mother is the matured principle of Cancer, but the non-matured or immature state, the initial condition of Cancer is the child. And that is one of the most important things to remember. In the most positive manifestation, the Cancer native can be child-like. But negatively, there can be a quality of childishness to Cancer which is very frequently found when Cancer is afflicted or Cancer is very heavily occupied. Often enough, even while there are many wonderful qualities, such as a quick understanding, empathy and a sharp mind, there may yet be an emotional immaturity and volatility. It is almost as though the emotional process has been arrested at the stage of the child. Growth can occur at any time in the life of the Cancer native, provided they become aware of this. The excessive involvement with the emotional side can later on be redirected into intellectual growth and the development of much deeper self-understanding through greater awareness on the mental plane, which can make them remarkable persons. Once again, very frequently, emotionality is often very strongly emphasised in the Cancer personality. They can throw childish temper tantrums or be childishly obstinate about certain things, absolutely unyielding and rigid about them. Even wonderful Cancer natives, and of course, the not so wonderful ones, can display all the things that a child does, and be involved with many of the things that children are involved with. Now we come to other functions which are governed by the Moon and Cancer. One of them is memory. Why memory? Yes? A student: Well, the Moon is the mind. Shri Mann: Yes. Moon is the receptive and emotional mind and its moods. But also, you see, it is home. It may seem a little abstract, but there is a very direct link between the Moon, home and memory. What are our first memories? They are memories of childhood,

file://H:\ASTRO LESSONS- KB MANN\4Cancer.htm

of growing up. That is where the life process begins for us, with birth. And, our entire recall is of things which have happened since we were born. So, that is the beginning point of recollection. Of course, we do not usually remember our birth as such, but from childhood we begin recalling and remembering things. And, the Moon is not only the indicator of birth but also of liquids and fluids, because it has a strong effect on the oceans, on the tides. It has an important partial rulership over the oceans. Oceans are repositories with two aspects to them: the top surface which is subject to change and disturbance, and the bottom which is calm and tranquil, and holds all sediment at the bottom. So, the unconscious portion of the mind is represented by the bottom of the ocean, while the conscious portion is the surface where waves and ripples keep occurring. The ocean is like a container, a reservoir of all things. Whatever you throw into it becomes part of it and is never lost. That, in a way, is one of the reasons why we can consider the Moon and Cancer as the repository of all recollection, all memory. It also has a connection with history. Reason. What is history? A child grows up remembering family relationships. Well, the history of humankind is the history of the family of humankind. History is no more than the history or the story of mankind as a family, and Cancer is family. In its larger and fuller sense, Cancer is the family of mankind, and the home of mankind, which is the Earth - any Cancer native who realizes this deeply on the emotional plane, has reached a much higher platform of evolution. What else is history? It is an archival function and memory is nothing but an archive, a storage of events, of things that have happened. As you will see, the Cancer-Capricorn axis governs archival of special kinds. In fact, each earth-water sign axis represents certain types of stores or archives. Every one of the 36 basic elements are present in each horoscope. All the twelve houses are there, each of the twelve signs is there, and so are all the twelve planets, most of which are also rulers of the twelve signs and houses. Now, whether the signs and houses are occupied by planets or they are aspected by planets or not, their rulers will be somewhere in the chart in association with certain other planets in certain specific signs and houses which will give us a key to the areas they rule in any chart. A student: If there is no planets in the fourth house, you just look to see where the Moon and Cancer are? Shri Mann: That is right. Where the Moon and Cancer are situated, and what is aspecting or with the Moon, these will give you a key to it. Besides these, there will be a sign in the 4th house whose ruling planet will be posted in some sign and house, and perhaps form different associations with other planets. You will also study these conditions. So, no sign or house will lose out in its representation. It is always there as a potential, always a part of the horoscope. Of course, some will be less active, some will be much more active, but they will all be present. It is also an important key to the nature of the whole horoscope in that certain signs and houses are very active and certain others are not. That adds more understanding concerning the nature of the person whose horoscope you are studying. Yes? A student: I was born in the month of July, so all these years I have been reading Cancer descriptions and forecasts. Now, should I throw all that out? Shri Mann: I recommend that at this time you simply put everything aside, do not throw anything out. Just lay everything aside for the while. We are going to get to very fine principles which tell you quite clearly the way a planet is going to exert its influence, the

file://H:\ASTRO LESSONS- KB MANN\4Cancer.htm

events it is likely to produce, and when. At this time I am just laying a broad foundational understanding of the influences of different signs, planets and houses. When I teach you the principles which link them together synergistically, they will begin indicating much more meaningful specifics to you. You will begin to see what is potentially most likely to happen and when. It will give you clear pointers concerning the course and options of a persons destiny, and where it can be altered and how. We will reach that stage only after some time and effort. But, at this time you can bundle-up everything you already know and put it aside until then. This way you will get a firm and tidy grasp of this science as it is being presented to you now. Yes? A student: What does it mean when you have the Moon in Cancer, as I do? Shri Mann: We should try not to discuss any personal placements in an isolated manner at this time. There are some good reasons for it. Firstly, it can make our approach less impersonal, less objective, as well as inefficient. Secondly, when we just discuss one placement, it is not enough to convey a meaningful impression of any person as a whole. The entire horoscope must be examined, including the ascendant, the sign and house placements of all the planets, their aspects and associations, the other yogas or combinations which exist in the horoscope. We should generally avoid making any statement about a person on the basis of isolated elements or even combinations in the chart. That becomes more of a conjecture. However, the Moon in Cancer is in a general sense very strong, since it rules this sign. It can make one very emotional, though. Now, what would be the people and the professions governed by it? What kind of persons, places, activities or things would be governed by Cancer? A student: How about a cardiologist? Shri Mann: Yes. In fact there are many cardiologists with Cancer rising. An unusually large number of dentists have Cancer or Taurus in the ascendant. Also, psychiatrists. A great number of psychiatrist are born with Cancer rising. This is a sign of instinctive, if not intuitive insight into the human psyche. Remember, the emotional sensitivity of Cancer is the root of its empathetic and sympathetic relations, responses or reactions. The exaggerated, perverted or stunted expression of this is what came make them very selfish, touchy, cruel, harsh, autocratic or manipulative. However, this sensitivity gives them, for good or ill, a deep, quick sense of the inner state, feelings, weaknesses or pain of others. A student: Race car drivers? Shri Mann: You have raised a very interesting point. According to some Hindu sages, the fourth house is also the house of conveyances and vehicles. Therefore, Cancer has something to do with transportation and driving, but not directly with car racing to any significant degree. My research, experience and thought do not allow me to say that it is an important or true representative of modern day transport, though it may have some signification for animal-driven conveyances, such as by oxen, buffaloes, cows, etc., which it governs. By this, I broadly mean such animals as belong to the bovine genus, since these are ruled by Cancer[1], and were employed frequently for pulling transport in earlier times. We will discuss this again at some later time. However, I will also add that Cancer ascending natives are usually fast drivers, usually out of restlessness or impatience, and that is a

file://H:\ASTRO LESSONS- KB MANN\4Cancer.htm

qualification for racing, whatever its mode or type. They should be advised to drive slower and with greater caution. A student: Mechanically inclined persons? Shri Mann: Yes, to some extent. The Cancer-Capricorn axis has a degree of mechanical inclination. But, even of these two, Capricorn is the stronger indicator of mechanical interest or involvement. Simply as a sign by itself, Cancer should not be classed as a strong signifier of mechanical interest or ability. A student: Real estate brokers? Shri Mann: Real estate brokers, yes, indeed. A very significant number of them have Cancer in the ascendant. Cancer rules the home, and realtors sell homes. Yes, you were going to say something? A student: What makes a sign afflicted? Does it mean it is afflicted if its ruler is in the opposite sign from the one it rules? For example, since the Moon rules Cancer, would it be afflicted if it was in Capricorn which is the seventh sign from Cancer? Shri Mann: That is one form of affliction. Any planet in the sign opposite to the one it rules, is somewhat weakened, and therefore the signs ruled by it are also weakened. Since signs ruling the exaltation and debilitation of planets are always opposite to each other, the same principle is somewhat applicable to the sign ruled by a planet and the one opposing it. However, there are many other types of afflictions. Some are on the basis of the ruler of any sign or house being in a sign where it is considered fallen (debilitated) or it is in a bad house (a trik house) or with a malefic planet. Others arise out of the occupation of a sign and house by a malefic planet or because the planet occupying it is the ruler of a difficult house, etc. We shall be studying the variety and nature of afflictions to planets, signs and houses in detail later. What we are really doing right now is completing a basic understanding of the thirty-six integrals of astrology in a broad manner. What are the thirtysix integrals? The twelve signs, the twelve houses and the twelve planets. Once we have completed these, we will start knitting all their potentials together in the fabric of the principles applicable to the evaluation of horoscopes. We will define the principles, and from these you will readily understand the causes, nature and effects of different types of afflictions, be they to houses, signs or planets. Yes, please? A student: Why is the fourth house connected with vehicles as opposed to the third? Shri Mann: In the previous session, when I was speaking about Gemini, I said it is connected with movement, transportation, short journeys and travels. Gemini and the 3rd house are, indeed, the most appropriate signifiers of conveyances and transport - very heavy transport being in the rule of Sagittarius and Pisces, the 9th and 12th houses. Incidentally, the symbol of Sagittarius is the Centaur, which is half man and half horse. I mentioned this because horses have been associated with travel. The association of the 4th house to vehicles seems to have come about on the basis that conveyances are one of the basic necessities of life, and as such are inseparable from basic comfort, which is an implication of the 4th house. Happiness is also governed by the 4th house. If your home is afflicted, if there is a
[2]

lack or shortage in the area of bare necessities, then there can be no happiness, no peace of mind. Further, happiness and freedom are linked, and freedom also means mobility. If you have freedom and mobility, it means you have transport. And, in the ancient times when these principles were formulated, any vehicle of transportation was very prized. It was a status symbol, if you will. Usually only rich noblemen owned a horse, and princes and kings had chariots. It is also possible that this connection arose because the element of Cancer is water, and in ancient times boats and ships were a major form of transportation, or simply because water was seen as a symbol of distant lands and shores, or of changefulness, or as a medium of travel. So, you can use both, the 3rd and the 4th as indicators of transport. However, you will see in actual practice, that the third has a far stronger and clearer say in the matter of travel and conveyances, particularly in modern times. Yes, please? A student: The Moon is also the fastest moving planet, could that suggest moving conveyances? Shri Mann: Good reasoning. Yes, the fast movement of the Moon is connotatively a contributor to this signification. However, on the logical plane, we are still left with a major contradiction, which is somewhat difficult to resolve. It is that the home is essentially a signifier of fixed, steady or stable conditions, in as far as physical objects are concerned, and therefore, the movement related representation of transport does not seem to tie-in too well with it, except as a negative or afflicted condition of ones residence, which results in migration, homelessness or wandering. Besides, the very concept of home is incompatible with that of distant or foreign lands. In my estimation, conveyances belong to Cancer or the 4th house more as a personal property of the home, used as a necessary convenience, rather than as true signifiers of journeys or of the concept of transportation. The most important journey or movement related signification of Cancer would relate to spiritual travel, the inward sojourn. Cancer symbolizes the individual soul, while Pisces represents the Supreme Soul (and also all individual souls, since they are essential integrals of the Supreme Soul). This will explain to you why Jupiter, the ruler of Pisces, is exalted in Cancer. However, there are other aspects of this which will probably be raised and discussed later. So, what other professions or activities would we indicated by Cancer? A student: Import, export? Conveyances across the sea, because it is connected with the water. Shri Mann: It is connected to oceans but not really overtly or directly connected to export/import. I say that for a reason. Actual experience has shown that import/export is not necessarily one of the common or above average employments of Cancer natives, though it does not at all forbid it. However, Cancer is not a strikingly strong indicator of import/export. A student: Cow milking industry? Shri Mann: Of course. A student: What about baby bottles? Shri Mann: Yes, very good. Taurus, too, would hold a connection with them.

A student: What about well digging? Shri Mann: Yes. Well-digging is more in the realm of the combination of Cancer and Scorpio. Scorpio because of the hollow, tubular condition, the cavernous condition, and the Moon because of the fresh water, the good water, because it is not Scorpionic water in a well, hopefully. Yes, we would consider wells themselves deeply connected to Cancer, since they are nurturing. However well-digging is very related to Scorpio. We have had a few excellent examples of the professions governed, two or three were really apt. Let us find and consider some more. We want to cover these widely for each sign, because that conveys an idea of how well we have understood their significations, while providing opportunities to expand our understanding further. A student: How about cooks, because they nourish, and also cooking? Shri Mann: Yes. However, the gourmet, the more sensuous and fancy side of cooking remains in the province of Venus and Taurus. There are other distinctions as well, but we will distinguish between the nutritional representations of Taurus and Cancer later. A student: Nutritionists? Shri Mann: It is a good connection because it is concerned with feeding, with nourishing, and it is not uncommon to find people involved in the field of nutrition having Cancer as an emphasised or prominent sign. Yet, by itself, particularly in the ascendant, it does not appear to indicate any extraordinary level of involvement with that area, though they very often have an interest in foods and talent in cooking. This simply means that they are not found in this field in numbers much exceeding a normal proportion. Yet, you find Libra rising often involved with restaurant business because their 10th house, the house of occupation, is Cancer. So, you often find them as restaurateurs. Yes? A student: How about Taurus? Shri Mann: Taurus too. Yes, the field of nutrition and restaurants is very strongly indicated by Taurus, as well as by Virgo. A student: You said, if Libra is rising, Cancer will be in the 10th house. How do we know that? Does Cancer always fall a few houses after your rising sign? Shri Mann: No, it depends on what your rising sign is. Once that is calculated, the signs have a fixed sequence and they simply fall in that sequence in the different houses of the chart. Do you know the sequence of all the signs? A student: Yes. Shri Mann: All right, then it is simple. If, let us say, Libra is in the 1st house, then Scorpio would be in the 2nd house, Sagittarius would be in the 3rd house, Capricorn would be in the 4th house and so on. Alright. What else would we expect?

A student: What about a wet nurse? Shri Mann: Yes. A wet nurse would be a very definite signification of Cancer. She is a mother figure, a surrogate mother, and she does exactly the thing that the Cancer principle indicates, i.e., nourish, breast feed the child, nurture the child. However, the wet nurse also falls under another signification - that of the 6th house, Virgo, because Virgo and the 6th house deal with nutrition and employees. So, Cancer and the 6th house, Virgo, both will signify the wet nurse, particularly if she is a nanny who is paid to do it. A student: Abortions? Shri Mann: Yes, an afflicted Cancer would show that as a negative potential. A student: Miscarriages. Shri Mann: Miscarriages would be an indication of an afflicted Cancer. But, Cancer is more or less a general signifier of emotions, feelings, maternal matters, children and childhood. However, Leo and the 5th house specifically signify ones own children which are ones own creations as well as one of our most important investments in many ways. You see, the 5th house and its specific ruler, and the 5th sign Leo and the Sun, specifically hold many signification relating to progeny and children, especially ones own. So, you would have to see what that is showing, and couple it with the influence of Cancer, to see the exact cause and nature of the miscarriage, whether it was intentional or accidental, etc. A student: Maybe, social workers would fall under Cancer rising? Shri Mann: Certainly. Cancer rising could produce social workers simply because they have to do with families and trying to arrange or provide help, food or shelter for them. Another profession for Cancer rising can be construction of homes, dwellings. A student: Underwater divers? Shri Mann: Yes, because it is definitely an indicator of water, fluids, so divers would fall partly under its domain, most especially pearl-divers. Very good. Yes? A student: How about libraries? Shri Mann: Yes, but only to a very small and conditional extent. It does have some say in the matter, however, I want to mention that it has specific significations concerning special subjects, e.g., history, archaeology, anthropology, psychology, etc. But, libraries, as a whole, are not governed by Cancer. They are mainly in the domain of Pisces. Libraries which contain the specialised subjects I have just mentioned or the sections of libraries which contain these, will be partially governed by the Cancer influence. A student: How about a hypnotist? Shri Mann: Hypnotist. Scorpio and Pisces have more to do with that. Give me your reasoning.

A student: It relates to the subconscious, memory, things like that, drawing things out of these. Shri Mann: I think you have a very logical reason for the link. Until now my practical work has shown more of an involvement of Taurus-Scorpio and Virgo-Pisces with hypnotism. Taurus-Scorpio are more the hypnotists, while Virgo-Pisces are more the subjects. Perhaps, Cancer should make a receptive hypnotic subject. That would stand to reason. Incidentally, the eyes have much to do with hypnotism, and both, the Taurus-Scorpio and Virgo-Pisces axes have to do with eyes and sight, as you will learn when we discuss Scorpio, Virgo and Pisces. Yes? A student: Genealogists? Shri Mann: Yes, genealogists, indeed. Their work concerns the history of family descent. Yes, that is excellent. A student: Child care centres? Shri Mann: Wonderful. Child-care centres are most definitely in the province of Cancer for obvious reason. In a sense, they act as refuges, havens, shelters. The children are there, and there is the caring for them. Yes, perfect. A student: Could it be home schooling? Shri Mann: Yes, very much so. We should try to exhaust more of the clearest possibilities. Not all of them, just as many as we can. It is not possible to describe or even list all of them. A student: Psychic ability? Shri Mann: Yes. In fact, all water signs possess psychic abilities to varying degrees. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, all three of them are the relatively more psychically active signs. We will be discussing this matter more fully later. However, I want to say this now, that every human being has that as a potential ability, and all signs, given certain special combinations, actually manifest this capability to different degrees. So, do not consider this the sole monopoly of water signs. A student: Well, you had mentioned actors. Shri Mann: Yes. Acting, histrionics, theatrics and drama are all substantially governed by Cancer. A student: Because of emotions?. Shri Mann: Emotions, yes. And the ability to fake, pretend or mimic.

A student: Moon in the first would be a good actor? Shri Mann: Very often good actors have Moon in the 1st, 7th or 10th house. However, there are numerous combinations which contribute to and also modify theatric talent. A student: I knew a Cancer child, and whenever she would go to sleep she had to have her sister's arm, and she would go like this all night long. She would just grab on to her sister's arm and pinch it. Shri Mann: Your remarks compel me to mention something which I had not meant to include in our discussions at the present level. The traits of biting and pinching are listed in my personal observations as negative Cancer traits. These are compiled in Star*Book, a comprehensive work which presents the more specific and detailed conclusions from my observations, research and experience with regard to astrological factors and especially their various combinations. A student: Really? Shri Mann: Yes. Among many other things, Star*Book contains numerous very refined and specific details concerning potential characteristics, habits, predispositions as well as of conditions and events reflected by the various signs and special astrological combinations, from very simple to extremely complex. A student: Even when she watched TV, she had to have somebody's arm. She would pinch their arm while she was watching TV. Shri Mann: It is perfectly in keeping with the characteristics of the crab - clinging to the rock, the crab's pincer movement. Cancer natives, especially the younger ones, are much more disposed to pinching and biting incidentally, some Leos, too, display these tendencies. A student: Oh, I know. It drove everyone crazy. Shri Mann: Undoubtedly. So, what else? A student: Does it have anything to do with fishing? Shri Mann: Yes, it does, because of the water representation. But, again, it would have to be a representation of an afflicted Cancer. Any function of killing is not supported by the positive expressions of signs, especially not under the positive expression of this sign of nurturing. Fishing as such, most strongly, would be a signification of an afflicted Pisces, the sign of the fish. Oceanographers and marine biology would also partially fall under Cancer, but more especially under Pisces. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces share a sort of joint rulership over river, lakes, seas and oceans. Water related, fluid related businesses, too. Bottling, milk bottling, water bottling, canning of fish or soup, things like that. Of course, many of them you will have to couple with other signs, depending on the specific nature of the query or the involved activities and objects. How you will define and apply these rulerships and significations will become clearer with further study.

A student: Mental changes? Shri Mann: Well, the cyclicity, the waxing and waning signification of the Moon, also applies to the mind and emotions, as I have described earlier. The ebb and the tide of feelings, moods and emotions. It is also an indicator of change due to its water representation. So, it can signify changes in many ways and areas. However, the lunar representation of change has differences from those of Mercury. These distinctions will not become apparent quite so easily at this stage, but as your understanding of other astrological concepts becomes more ripe, they will be easy to grasp. One of the reasons for this is that we are currently covering broad territories which, of necessity, include many grey areas. So, there is much over-lapping at this juncture. As we move into finer and more complex conditions of the horoscope many things which are vague now will achieve sharper definition. A student: How about insane asylums? Shri Mann: Yes, Cancer does have a most important say in the matter, owing to its influence and connection with the subconscious, with the emotions, and with psychological conditions. In fact, the very word lunacy comes from its ruler, the Moon. This axis is ruler over many emotional disturbances and hysterical states. Further, since it indicates nurturing and havens, it can suggest the elements of refuge and nursing involved with an insane asylum. So, it does share some very vital significations in these ways. In fact, afflictions to the fourth house often indicate emotional/mental imbalance or insanity. However, the most significant rulership over the actual asylums for the insane is given to Pisces. You will understand the reasons for this when we describe Pisces. A student: You have said the full Moon indicates emotional disturbances. Shri Mann: Yes, indeed. Yet, each individual will be affected differently by the lunar phases depending on how powerful or how afflicted the Moon is in their chart, or where the sign of Cancer has fallen, or what sign and planets occupy the 4th house, etc. These are all finer things which we will learn to calibrate and synthesize at a later time. Here we are more or less describing the grosser and general significations. A student: What of someone who is a politician like George Washington - he was a politician but he was also a general in the army defending his home land? Shri Mann: You know, that is a very interesting nerve you have hit in this area. Many people think that Cancer is a passive sign, a very sensitive, gentle and easy sign. In reality, it can be extremely aggressive and militant. Of all people, Genghis Khan was Cancer rising. Cassius Clay is Cancer rising. The very characteristics we described earlier, the patriotism or racism, the defensiveness or machismo, partly born of the underlying insecurity, often add up to produce terrible tyrants, conquerors, militants and generals. You will see that Virgo, too, which by the way, we shall be describing today, also produces many generals and soldiers, and for good reason. It should help you develop a better insight into the power of the feminine gender to observe two very female signs, such as Cancer and Virgo, present such a martial, aggressive facet. So, what else can we allot to Cancer? A student: How about an astronaut?

file://H:\ASTRO LESSONS- KB MANN\4Cancer.htm

2/3/2011

Stellistics~Jyotish~Astrology lecture on the sign Cancer

Shri Mann: Why would you connect astronauts to Cancer? A student: Because they landed on the Moon. Shri Mann: Very good, right. Well, any astronaut who particularly travelled to the Moon, for him or her I think we would definitely have to consider Cancer and the Moon as more specific signifiers in their horoscopes. If someone travelled to Mars, we would give Mars and its signs the same importance in their personal horoscope. Indeed, so far the only place we have landed a man is on the Moon. This may change in the future. We may land on many other planets, and since each planet is in space, it is a signifier of space - which means that this is not a basis for qualifying as a representative of space or space travel. If there were questions pertaining to the astronauts who actually landed on the Moon, we would most definitely carefully look at Cancer and the Moon. However, Cancer or the Moon, or Mars and Aries or Scorpio, do not become absolute signifiers of space travel or cosmonauts in general, because their link is due to the destination, and not due to any representation of space itself or of space travel. Once again Pisces takes the mandate. This is the most significant sign of space travel, as is the 12th house. The reason should be obvious Pisces represents infinity, therefore, space. It has much to do with aviation as well. We shall have more to say about this when we discuss Pisces. Let me say here, the mutable cross composed of the two mutable sign-house axes, i.e., the 3rd 9th and the 6th 12th (Gemini-Sagittarius, Virgo-Pisces), and their rulers, are the chief representatives of conveyances and journeys. A student: What about a milkman. Shri Mann: Ideal. Yes, certainly, a milkman or milkmaid. Also dairies and dairy farmers, milk products, and all milch cattle. Yet, I remind you again that Taurus, too, has a relation with all these. By the way, cheese belongs to the same axis but is a primary signification of Capricorn because it is a fermented food. So, any other suggestions? A student: This is a long shot, but how about someone who writes greeting cards for families, different family messages and poems? Shri Mann: No, that would be mostly under Gemini, since it is primarily a short communication. Let us say, Gemini was strong or the communicative side was strong and then the person had a choice: should I be writing greeting cards for lovers or should I be writing for fathers, mothers, children, aunts, then we would have a clear indication, if Cancer was strong there, that he should be writing for family relationships as opposed to the romantic ones. The Moon is not a strong indicator of the romantic aspect of femininity, more the maternal and the familial aspect. So, it could act as a refinement but would not principally be an indicator of such work. Yes? A student: What about the immune system? Shri Mann: My work has shown that afflictions to Cancer or the Moon often contribute to allergic conditions, which usually relate to deficiencies, weaknesses or disturbances of the immune system. This has become very obvious, therefore, I would say yes. In fact, the Moon in the 1st or the 7th house almost invariably produces allergies or nasal congestion. The lymph system is definitely co-governed by the lunar influences, and

allergies are often related to that system. Allergies have a connection with immunity disorders, so we can say that there is a correspondence between the immune functions and the lunar significations. On the rational plane we can see why this should be so. The Moon and Cancer are symbolic of water and moisture, so we should expect these to signify phlegm, catarrh, mucous discharges, etc. As far as the immunity is concerned, the signification is obvious in the fact that these two are governors of milk, lactation and the mammary glands, which produce colostrum. Colostrum, also known as foremilk, is extremely rich in antibodies and minerals, and discharges some primary immunity building functions. The initial immunity of infants is built by it. Actually, the Cancer-Capricorn axis has jurisdiction over the immune system. Capricorn represents the matured form of milk and calcium in its rulership over the skeleton structure, which carries a powerful function of immunity in the bone marrow. You will learn of these functions more thoroughly further on. A student: How about the Red Cross and the Salvation Army? Shri Mann: Yes. These two institutions in their function as shelters and providers of nourishment are certainly under a partial Cancer influence. It is a nurturing, mothering influence. However, once again the sign of Pisces takes full charge in this matter. Let me point out once and for all that the ultimate and greatest shelter is symbolised by Pisces. In its highest signification, it is the Home of the Supreme Being, the ultimate refuge or haven of the soul. Besides, all matters of philanthropy and charity in their purest form are in its domain, as are many other diverse, even contrary seeming matters. I want to wait for our discussion on this sign before expanding on this area. A student: YMCA? Shri Mann: YMCA, but you will have to couple signifiers. No organisation is devoid of certain other associations. YMCA has a missionary and/or a religious side to it. So, it is not a pure Cancer-type activity. Similarly, the Red Cross, has a significant medical side to it. Besides providing shelter and food, it deals a lot with medicine, in aiding in the area of health, since it also helps victims of wars different disasters, who may be injured or ill. So, we have other connotations to consider. Therefore, these institutions will not be governed solely by Cancer, but in conjunction with other signifiers, which may be more their primary indicators. In many cases, depending on the core nature of any institution, the lunar influence may simply be a subsidiary one. We shall develop a deeper understanding of representation-sharing later through descriptions of how a coupling of two or more signs or planets can indicate a particular profession or activity more specifically. We have not yet covered a great number of professions which exist, but when you understand more about representation-sharing you will be able to decipher signifiers for many complex or out-ofthe-ordinary activities and professions. One last thing I should mention is that this sign, Cancer, is also an indicator of purity in general, but only in a very general way. Not simply purity in liquids, but purity itself as a concept. If you had a question concerning the intention of someone, and a benign Cancer (and Moon) was your indicator, it would signify purity of intent. If an afflicted Scorpio or Gemini was your indicator, you would have two different kinds of possible impurities involved in the intent, but a healthy Cancer by itself would indicate purity. The potential of purity is also accompanied by that of adulteration and impurity. We can never eliminate the presence of the opposite potential, since one cannot exist without the other.

All right, I think we should take a break. [Break]

[1] There is a significant correspondence between many significations of Venus and the Moon, and the signs ruled by them, Taurus and Cancer. Among many other common things, they both represent family and milch cattle. The symbol of Taurus is the bull, while Cancer rules cows, since it signifies milk. Both planets and signs govern early nutrition (and teething), and nutrition in general. [2] There are twelve planets, if the two nodes of the moon and Herschel, Neptune and Pluto are added to the seven planets of traditional ancient Jyotish, i.e., Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.
