PORTLAND ADVENTIST ACADEMY

Christ-Centered

Character-Driven

Our World is Off Center

Time honored foundations of truth have given way to the idea that moral choices are simply a matter of individual taste. Todays youth have become victims of this thinking. Dennis Prager, nationally known social commentator, states, Millions of American young people have been raised by parents and schools with How do you feel about it? as the primary moral axiom. Students are told, Believe what you want. It doesnt really matter what it is as long as you genuinely believe it. Right and wrong, truth and error, have become matters of opinion. Youth receive skewed messages:

Jesus is an irrelevant relic of history Education is primarily about getting a grade Personal accountability is optional Happy people look, act, and spend their money in certain ways My immediate reality is what counts most Worldview doesnt matter as long as you are true to your current needs, wants, and desires

These messages leave teenagers:

Confused regarding issues of faith with no safe place to voice their opinions Believing that their worth lies in their performance Unable to anticipate or accept the consequences for their actions With a narrow view on who to become and how to live Making quick decisions NOW, without recognizing the future impact on their lives Adrift in the world without a stable foundation

Oftentimes, our young people are left to navigate these waters on their own as most adults and teachers are reluctant to advise, fearful to declare, and unwilling to debate. They are afraid to get into the fray and challenge young people to think. The result is young people who are left without the tools and support to achieve maturity.

Centered on Transformation
Because we desire to follow Christs call to transform our community and our world, we guide and educate young leaders to live lives that are Christ-centered and Character-driven.

In a confused world where people are uncertain about truth and error, our children deserve a place that provides a focused education--setting clear direction, giving solid grounding, and teaching compelling values-takes place in a safe and enriching environment, in a building that facilitates quality instruction, and in a manner that transforms our students and our community.

Portland Adventist Academy is a private school open to all faiths, which is truly unique. We approach education as more than passing along information. Beyond scholarship and intellectual growth are vested the qualities that create successful individuals.

Education is life training.

It is uncovering the greatness that lies within each student.

Interaction between students and staff produce the environment where mentorship and education blend. PAA is built on the belief that we are at our best when we live lives that are Christ-centered and character-driven. Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ and centering our lives on Him is the foundational choice that will reveal our true selves and guide every subsequent decision. Nurturing students to understand that simply believing in Jesus is different than living as a disciple changes everything we do.

Primary Aims

To invite our students to consider a relationship with Jesus and to mentor them in how to live as followers of Christ To teach a holistic Christian worldview that impacts every part of living To build an environment of academic excellence in creating life-long learners To provide an accepting and nurturing environment To be a relevant part of our local and global community

Our class sizes are small; there is a very good student to teacher ratio and I know every one of my students on a personal level. I dont know that you would get that at another school, but you do get it here.

Determined to Succeed
It is easy to take a positive environment for granted. I just thought life at PAA was the way it was
supposed to be, says Tony Nakashima class of 2005. My attention was caught up in the blur of high school life. Getting decent grades, hanging out with friends, music, sports there was always something going on and I loved it. He remembers that one of his favorite activities was the optional Friday worship service provided by the Chaplains Department. Woven throughout were the Christ-centered and Character-driven core values that PAA stands for. Tony remembers them well but admits that at the time they seemed more like slogans than something to base his life upon. All of that changed after graduation. His first desire was to play basketball for a university. He walked on to the team at Hawaii Pacific University and made the team. Things didnt go the way I had expected. It was a very different experience for me, says Tony. After one year at Hawaii Pacific he decided to go to Pacific Union College where the atmosphere was more familiar, and there he completed his Marketing degree. Upon graduation Tony sought employment, experiencing the challenge of finding and keeping jobs in difficult financial times. Eventually he landed a position at a talent agency in Hollywood. Here Tonys personality and drive began to show through and his employers were quick to recognize it. Working to assist young people in promoting their talents and getting them noticed by prominent leaders and producers in the entertainment industry became the goal but it created tension. I had been taught the importance of honesty and ethical behavior, says Tony. While Christ centeredness seemed like a nice slogan at PAA, I now realized that it was really the way I wanted to live. Tony discovered that most, if not all, of his fellow talent agents were not focused on the character or Christ. Their emphasis was very simply using deceit to manufacture image. It didnt take long for Tony to begin to re-evaluate. He realized that the values he learned and absorbed while at PAA were the values he wanted to base his life upon. The imagebased life of Hollywood wasnt cutting it. He longed to be involved with influencing young people to build a solid foundation for their lives not a pretend one. He resigned his job at the talent agency and moved back to Portland where he is now teaching and coaching with the students of PAA. The values many kids are chasing lead to emptiness. But my experience at PAA truly changed the person that I am today. Im excited to have the chance to guide students in building strong characters that are focused on Jesus. It is good to be back home.

Motivated to Grow
Through their teaching, the teachers are always helping me develop integrity and respect.
Rachel Schrattenholzer Senior We believe that the actions we take in life best reflect our Christ-centered commitment and values. Whether locally, regionally or globally, we are motivated to provide opportunities for action. Opportunity plus action creates character development. Each student has immeasurable value and is singularly special. We seek to provide a wide array of opportunities for students to discover their true characters. Academic achievement isnt the entire story. Art, music, spirituality, self-awareness, and positive leadership are all pursued and discussed. In addition to the core classes expected at a high school PAA offers a wide array of classes and activities designed specifically to broaden students awareness and shape their experience.

I fully recognize that I cannot change students. It is my job to create an environment, a sacred space, where Jesus can change them from the inside out and they begin to resemble Him.

Driven to Thrive
Within the walls of our school important groundwork for the future has been laid. Portland Adventist Academy is home to tomorrows promise. We produce young men and women who are centered on values and are driven to make an impact on the world. Budding community leaders, academicians, doctors, scientists, entrepreneurs and nurses have all walked these halls. Our personalized and comprehensive teaching and mentoring results in graduates who thrive in life and academics.

Highlights:

Over 95% of our graduates continue on to college and university. Each year approximately 50% of our student body participates in a Varsity athletic program. We value and maintain a low student teacher ratio. Currently our ratio is 11:1. PAAs band and choir have won 19 state championships between them. Each year approximately 70% of our students participate in our music program. PAAs athletic teams have achieved 11 state finishes and been recognized for 19 sportsmanship awards. In the 2013-14 school year we had 105 students participate in interscholastic sports.

Our success is measured one student at a time.

I appreciate the family of PAA. I know my teachers and friends all have my back.
Kalli Creitz Senior "

Before I came to PAA it was tough for me to express myself. It was hard for me to talk to God and tell him whats happening in my heart. But Ive changed. Now I dig deep, give him all and let it out.

Transforming the Future

Since our doors opened in 1910 we have had the privilege of educating, mentoring and preparing thousands of young people for the calling the Lord has on their lives. We have been in our current facilities for 52 years, and the buildings have seriously deteriorated over time. After carefully weighing the options to remodel or rebuild, the Portland Adventist Academy Board of Directors has determined that the educational and facility needs of the future require a new building and a fresh start. As we head into the future, our dream is to expand our ability to provide the place, people, and principles that students need to live Christ-centered and Character-driven lives. We are poised to grow. Now is the time. We believe that Portland Adventist Academy is the premier Christian high school on Portlands east side. We currently own 20 acres of prime land with immediate access to I-205 that provides us with tremendous flexibility and opportunities to move ahead with building a place to live out our dream. The Place.

Phase 1 will be a new 29,000 square foot building that will include a new 500 seat chapel, music department, welcome center and administrative offices. Phase 1 will also include a new entryway, parking lots and an all-weather lighted sports field.
