Greetings!

The Sociology Student's Union, the Center for Applied Social Research, the
Department of Social Sciences and the Dean of the Art and Sciences Faculty from the
University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, invite you to participate in the XVIII Annual
Research Symposium in the Social Sciences: "The Undergraduates Contribution to
Applied Social Research" which will take place on the Universidad of Puerto Rico,
Mayagüez, April, 29 2010.

The Objectives of the Symposium are:

* To promote critical research and analysis of contemporary social reality among

undergraduate students in the Social Sciences;

* To provide undergraduate students with a professional forum where discussion of

important and critical social issues takes places between the academia community and
the general public;

* And to create a friendly, professional and active environment were undergraduate

students and faculty members from universities in Puerto Rico and other parts of the
world exchange and share related perspectives and research experiences in applied
social research.

Rules:

1. The Symposium is open to undergraduate students that have worked or are

currently working on a research project in any of the Social Sciences (Psychology,
Political Sciences, Sociology, Anthropology, History, Economy, Social Work, among
others). Only two (2) students per project will be allowed to present.

2. The students must complete an application for participation that must be endorsed
by a faculty member. Without the endorsement, the application will not be taken into
consideration.

3. The student must submit one (1) copy of the abstract of their research. The abstract
should include the research title. Print or type and abstract of your research in a
separate sheet of paper (81⁄2" x 11"). The abstract should be 200 to 300 words. Use
on and a half (11⁄2") line spacing, one-inch margins (1"), and Times New Roman font
in size 12.

4. Every applicant must pay the application fee, at the time of applying, which is
$15.00, must be mail as a money order to:

An evaluation committee, composed by members of the Sociology Student's Union

and Faculty from the Department of Social Sciences, will evaluate and select the
research projects to be presented at the Symposium. Selection will be on a
competitive basis and will be based on the quality of the proposal and its contribution
to the field of applied social research. The Committee will announce the accepted
presentation by March 30, 2010.

The Deadline for Abstract and Application submission is February 26, 2010. All

Note: Have in mind that if you choose to mail the package, it has to be postmarked by
or before the deadline.

Note to Students from universities outside of Puerto Rico: The Sociology Student's
Union and the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez will provide all the meals for
the duration of the symposium also ground transportation and hotel accommodations
for 1 day before and after the symposium. The applicant must provide flight and
additional meals expenses. Please check with your university since some departments
might have travel funds available.
