Grade: Second Grade Special Learners Subject: General Music Focus: First Day Lesson/Say Your Name Related

Subject: Going to school Lesson adapted from: Education Through Music, Special Learner Activities, pg. 157 Objective: Students will respond to verbal prompts and answer questions about themselves while playing instruments in a group. Standards: Creating, Performing, and Participating in the arts Materials: Differentiation: Some children may still need help in finding or keeping a steady beat. Watch and note those having trouble. There will be many opportunities to practice. One beat-keeping game is to use a steady beat to pat different body parts for eight beats each. First lead children as you pat, counting aloud from one to eight. Then, let children take turns leading. To reinforce steady maintaining a steady beat, have children use the pat-clap pattern with known songs and short poems until most are doing the pattern together. If a few have difficulty, it may help to pair them with proficient children who tap the beat gently on partner shoulders as they do the pat clap pattern. Lesson: Opening: I Gotta Feelin Pass out shakers or other soft instruments to each student. Play a recorded version of I Got a Feeling and have students imitate and incorporate specific rhythms to be played if cognitively and physically able. When the song finishes tell students that we are going to change the words to the song. Shakers Guitar or Piano Song- I Got a Feeling

Using the guitar and sing the song using the lyrics, I gotta feelin that todays gonna be a good day! Cause we play music with each other!. Echo teach the words to the class a have them sing and play their instruments. Vamp your accompaniment in the background softly. Say Hello to one child and wait until he/she responds with Hello (prompt if necessary), ask him or her how they are feelings today, then ask a question a question of the day (i.e. what is your favorite food?, Who is your favorite singer?). Repeat the refrain and then prompt the student you just interacted with to say

Across the Curriculum: Social Studies, Organizing information, expressing main ideas- Say Your Name To help children become acquainted at the beginning of the school year, have them create a word web that tells about themselves. First, children should write and circle their names on a piece of oaktag. Ask them to think about things that help describe who they are such as hobbies, possessions, or favorite things. Then have them write these things around their name and circle them. Remind children that they can list anything that makes them feel special. Display the word webs on the bulletin board.

Close: Sing the goodbye song and have students state their name when prompted.
