BOWLING CO-COACHES OF THE YEAR

Under the direction of Frank Telenko Jr., the Elizabethtown girls' team not only qualied for the Pa. State Championships for the rst time but the Bears brought home the gold medal. The state championship was a product of his philosophy, which asked his bowlers to put team goals above individual goals. In his 10th year as the Bears' coach, Telenko directed his team to a Section Two FRANK TELENKO title with a 75-9 record. The boys' team was runner-up to Penn Manor in the L-L League Championships. The E-town girls' team nished as a runner-up to the Penn Manor girls in the Eastern PA Regional tournament before turning the tables on them in states. Penn Manor Coach Chris Vital guided his team to the best record in the L-L League (76-8), in capturing the Section One title, and the L-L League Team Championship Tournament. The 10-year veteran coach encouraged his bowlers to take chances, telling them, the sport is not easy, so dont be afraid to try new things and take the risk to improve. His girls team won the Eastern PA Regional tournament and qualied for the PA State Championships, where it took CHRIS VITALE home a silver medal. The Penn Manor boys team qualied for states, too, and grabbed a bronze medal.

Pequea Valley senior Chelsey M e r k l i n g e r, who bowls for Lancaster Mennonite in a co-op agreement, took her game to a higher level in the postseason. The Section Three FirstTeam All-Star led all L-L League girls with her 220.63 average and was able to put it to work in earning a District Three Singles Championship third-place medal and a Eastern Pa. Regional Singles runnerup medal. She also qualied for the Pa. State Championships. After she missed qualifying for the state championship last year, she termed this, a redemption season, so the determined senior pushed to the top seed in qualifying rounds in both the District Three and the Eastern Regional Championships.

Undeniably the best wrestler to ever come out of the Lancaster-Lebanon League, and the best in 90-some years of Lancaster County wrestling, Solancos Thomas Haines wrapped up an incredible career by winning a fourth PIAA Class AAA championship. With that accomplishment, the Ohio State recruit became just the 12th Pennsylvania wrestler to win four state titles. In the second unbeaten scholastic season of his career, Haines posted a 42-0 mark, pinning 29 opponents. For his career, he had 119 falls in his 174 victories. The milestones clicked by like, well, milestones. He opened the season winning his fourth career Mule Classic championship and won his second PowerAde Christmas tournament title. He became the rst wrestler to win four Escape the Rock Tournament championships, and with that, four of the sweetest swag a wrestler can take down: boxing-style championship belts. A week later, Haines became just the fourth four-time L-L League champion. He began his postseason valedictory winning his fourth sectional title and secured his third District Three Class AAA championship with a victory over Hempelds Joey Goodhart. In a much-anticipated meeting in the state seminals, he pinned Kiski Areas Shane Kuhn, then topped surprise nalist Pat Finn of Pottsgrove, 6-1 for the title. He is the Golden Mules all-time victory leader. In addition, his 174 career wins rank him No. 1 on the L-L League list.

WRESTING COACH OF THE YEAR

In his second season at the helm, Brian Schillings Garden Spot Spartans BRIAN SCHILLING ran the L-L Section Two table. One year after sharing the section title with Conestoga Valley and Manheim Central, Garden Spot stood alone atop Section Two, going 7-0 in the league. Overall, the Spartans nished 14-4, qualifying for the District Three Class AAA team championships. Along the way, in team competition, Garden Spot was second at the Ephrata Duals and fourth in their own Tom Hecker Invitational. In individual competition, the Spartans placed third at the Penn Manor Holiday tournament, second at the Governor Mifin Holiday tournament, third at the L-L League tournament and third at the District Three Class AAA Section Four championships.

After getting the better of his toughest opponent himself the rest of the season was a piece of cake for Lancaster Catholics Stephen Loiseau. Coming off a fth-place nish at the 2013 PIAA Class AA state tournament, the Drexel-bound senior set a personal goal of four winning gold medals in 2014: sectional, district, regional and state. He accomplished what he set out to do, winning his rstever District Three Section Two Class AA championship, following that with the successful defense of his AA District Three 182-pound title. He cruised to the PIAA Southeast Region title, his rst, with an 8-0 victory over Bethlehem Catholics Jose Ortiz, then swept the bracket at 182 at the PIAA State tournament, besting Ortiz once more to cap an unbeaten, 46-0 season. In his 46 wins, Loiseau recorded 19 falls, 11 technical falls and three major decisions. Eight of those bonus-point verdicts came in the postseason. Loiseau nished with 154 career victories, shattering the Crusader school record, placing him third all-time on the L-L list.

Just as you cant judge a book by its cover, you cant judge the Falcons versatile sophomore by statistics alone. Horns points-per-game average hovered around 10 (9.8) this winter but his value to the reigning L-L champions went far beyond point production. Evans a leader, a coach on the court, Crest coach Tom Smith said. He knows what needs to be done and he does it. In Horns two years on the varsity the Falcons have appeared in back-to-back title games, ending a drought that extended back to 1976. Hes a matchup nightmare for all teams in the L-L, said Cedars coach Tim Speraw, whose squad opposed Horn and Co. in the league nal. Hes strong, physical and athletic, a good allaround player.

BOYS BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEAR

The Barons boss ran herd on the most successful season in program history. It was a season of rsts for Centrals boys basketball team: rst Section Three title; rst district quarternal victory; rst district championship appearance; rst state playoff game. The Barons boasted league-best marks with 18 straight wins and a 15-1 regular-season record. To his credit Sherwood constantly deected praise to his players. Im not doing anything magical, he said. Its the kids who are magical. Guided by Sherwood, Manheim Central enjoyed a magical season.

Riding the inside presence of Leslie, a 6-foot-2 senior forward, Manheim Township captured its fourth straight Section One title and its rst L-L League crown since 2011. Leslie, who averaged 16.3 points per game, did a lot of her damage from the free-throw line, where she shot 80% this winter. Sam Mahan may have gotten more out of helping his teammates than they did. The instruction from the Manheim Central junior, named Marksman of the Year for his regular-season-long average of 99.5, turned him into a better shooter. When you teach someone what you have learned, you go over all the fundamentals and make sure you are doing things right, said Manheim Central rie coach Steve Waddington, talking about Mahan. He has spent a lot of time working with other kids and hes ne-tuned his approach in doing that. Mahan was a consistent shooter, as his average indicates.

GIRLS SWIMMING COACH OF THE YEAR

Despite having only 8 or 9 swimmers in some meets, Woods carefully crafted his lineups to get the most out of his limited resources. In his sixth year at the helm, he guided the Eagles to their third straight Section Two crown, a second-place nish in the L-L League Meet and a MATT WOODS sixth-place nish at districts.

The sophomore sprinter won the 50 and 100 freestyle races at leagues, and is closing in on the MT school record in the 50 free. She sets very high goals and standards for herself, MT coach Dan Graybill said. Shes been a lot stronger in competitive situations and is diversifying her events, moving into the middle distance in free and the 100 buttery. Newman scored the most power points in the coaches rating system.
