Artifact 3 Commentary My Artifacts 3 are several examples of Restorative Justice Conferences that I have facilitated at my school from my course

TE 840 Proseminar I: Historical Bases for Literacy Instruction. This course was pivotal in the direction of my masters. Although I am passionate about writing and teaching my students to love writing, this course helped me to gravitate toward what became the theme and direction of my masters, teaching the whole child. This course encouraged me to value, understand, and incorporate the diverse backgrounds and home lives of my students into my lessons and our classroom culture. From this course, I was motivated to pursue ways to incorporate student diversity and background into my lesson planning. I had the opportunity to become trained to facilitate Restorative Justice Conference mediations between students. I have included my certificate from my training as well as two examples of Restorative Justice Conference mediations between students. I chose this artifact to reflect the MATC Program Goal 3: Collaborative Professional Development, Teacher Leadership, Contributions to the Field, Standard 1: Understanding and commitment to students and their diversity, and Standard 6: Proactive participation in collaborative initiatives, professional learning communities, professional organizations, and teacher leadership beyond the classroom. I believe so strongly in the positive impact that Restorative Justice can have on a school and a classroom culture because it empowers the students in a positive way. It allows students to repair the harm that they have caused others or the school and to reenter the school culture in a positive way. It also encourages participation and support from families. Students of all backgrounds, and students who have a traditionally negative feeling about school, are more encouraged to feel like a positive part of their classrooms and schools. I was also able to become a leader in my school because both students and faculty approached me to facilitate mediations and I was able to present information about Restorative Justice and strategies for implementing it into the classroom to our staff. After becoming trained and actually having the opportunity to facilitate Restorative Justice Conference mediations between students, I saw just how powerful they could be to change the culture of classrooms and schools. They empower students to mediate their differences in a mature and respectful way and dissipate any issues so that they do not resurface again. It also improves students mindsets about school because they are not simply being punished and their reintegrated into school with a negative feeling and reputation, but are able to repair the harm they have caused and solve their conflicts. I feel proud that I can be an asset to my students and my school and that students can feel comfortable approaching me to help them participate in mediation.
