Assignment 1
1) Liz worked with other employees and organized them to respond to the dilemma that arose from the shipment failure. She leaded the employees, coordinated their work, chose the best ones suitable for an effective response to the crisis, and attempted to motivate them with an extra 10% pay for overtime. 2) Yes, Liz Sanders is adept at matching peoples capabilities with appropriate responsibilities as didnt choose any random works to assist her in dealing with the dilemma, but rather chose a small group of experienced workers who were both familiar with producing the parts and willing to work overtimes at the last minute. This choice was the most appropriate in this situation. 3) The failure of Lizs plan might cause Elco to alter its strategic plan by dealing with more than one supplier, so that any failure in shipment wouldnt result in the delay of orders. Another choice would be to switch to another more reliable supplier or have back up suppliers who can respond quickly to any sudden orders. Also, Elco might consider opening a few warehouses to keep some extra shipments and supplies to respond to cases of emergency and sudden rises in demand. Another possible approach is to preorder supplies in advance so that any delay wouldnt affect production as there would be extra time. 4) According to Mintzbergs typology of managerial roles, Liz Sanders played the role of the leader, the resource allocator, and the disturbance handler. 5) Assuming that Liz Sanders ins relatively new at Elco Enterprises, the things that would trouble her most as she reflects on this crisis would be the view and opinion of the senior management of her performance and her competence in handling the dilemma that arose, as she is the operations manager and is the one responsible for the entire production team, thus any failures would be her responsibility, and since she is relatively new, she needs to keep up a good reputation, earn the trust of the senior managers, and any possible failures would have a negative impact on that. 6) In this scenario, Liz exercised the following managerial skills: a. Conceptual Skills: Recognizing problem areas and implementing solutions. Ability to use information to solve business problems. Understanding the business uses of technology. b. Communication Skills: Ability to transform ideas into words and actions. Credibility among colleagues, peers, and subordinates. c. Effectiveness Skills: Setting priorities for attention and activity. Customer focus. Time management. Setting priorities for attention and activity. d. Interpersonal Skills: Working in teams; cooperation and commitment.
