This time the Design competition comprises several categories. And you are selected to participate in the Fluid & Hydraulic System Design Category. The Design Project details are given below.

Design Project Water Distribution System You have to select an area in Sri Lanka and should come up with a Detailed Design of a Water System that will be useful for Sri Lankans. That can be any water design which utilizes the knowledge of design of Pipe mains, Open Channels and Pump selections. Main Design: You can choose any design scenario such as a pure water distribution system, well water pumping system, channel diversion system, etc. The selection of the locations, choosing the appropriate route will also be a part of your design project. But make sure that this system should help to improve the living standard of the particular area. Main features of the Water Distribution System. Distance: >2 km Elevation Difference: > 20 m Design of a Pump main to connect two reservoirs (Tanks) including Pipe line design and pump selection Design of an Open channel Providing a Layout of the Water Distribution System.

Also the detailed designs should include: Analysis and solving of practical pipeline flow problems and determining head loss/discharge/pipe size as required using a variety of methods including current computer software methods (P 3.1) Design channels to convey known discharges with specified design criteria, eg. velocity of flow using a variety of methods including current computer software methods (P3.2) Select appropriate pump characteristics to suit a given hydraulic situation by selecting appropriate pump/s, using manufacturers published pump characteristics curves (P 4.2) Prepare diagrams showing hydraulic structures, pipe fittings and measuring instruments for practical civil engineering application eg. pumping station (P 4.1)

Figure 04: Layout of the Pump Main with Notations Guidelines for Cost Effective Design of Pipelines The design velocity should not be less than 0.6m /s in order to avoid depositions and consequent loss of carrying capacity. The design velocity should not be higher than a maximum value according to the diameter of the pipe, in order to avoid scouring of the pipe material. Table 01 provides the data for maximum allowable values of different pipe sizes of Steel.

Figure 05: Performance Curves of Three Different Centrifugal Pumps *BEP- Best Efficiency Point

To support with your calculations use below given illustration.

Figure 06: Head of the Pump against Capacity (Flow) Plotted is the head of the pump against its capacity (Flow). The head of a pump is read in feet or meters. The capacity units will be either gallons per minute, liters per minute or cubic meters per hour. You have to consider the Flow and the BEP, which gives the required head for your system. Ideally a pump would run at its best efficiency point all of the time, but we seldom hit ideal conditions. As you move away from the (Best efficiency Point) BEP the shaft will deflect and the pump will experience some vibration. You'll have to check to see how far you can safely deviate from the BEP and still get satisfactory operation (a maximum of 10% either side is typical).
