Questionnaire Analysis Pre-Production

I asked twenty people to fill out my music magazine questionnaire so I could compile the results and analyse their opinions on certain genres of music and what they find appealing. My purpose of doing so was to understand further ideas about uses and gratification, and also how I can model my magazine on the opinions of those who are current readers of indie music magazines.

I deliberately asked 16-21 year olds to answer my questionnaire as they are the audience I am going to be targeting through my music magazine. I did opt to ask one person who was 25+ as I know they like indie music and would perhaps be able to provide me with some insight about what a generation older than my target audience would expect from indie magazines.

What music genre do you listen to most?

Most of those I asked listen to indie/rock music. Having proved so popular, this confirms my choice of wanting to produce an indie music magazine as there is demand for it. Classical music proved to be then least unpopular music genre as no-one I asked said they listen to it the most out of the given options.

I asked this question to gain an understanding of whether or not those who preferred a different genre of music to indie music were still a fan of the latter. Most of those who answered were a fan of indie music, thus the idea that there is a market available for indie music is once more confirmed.

Which artists have you heard of out of the following?

My intention of asking this question was to gain an understanding of what indie bands those who I questioned knew of. From this, I plan to use the popular indie bands on my front cover as a way of luring the audience in, and intend on using Paramore as a cover story due to all twenty people knowing who they are.

What colour attracts you most when buying a magazine?

My research indicates that red is the most used colour for mastheads in magazines across a spectrum wider than just music/indie. Because it stands out and is a bold colour, the connotations it has also attract the reader into looking at it. As noone said that pink and orange attract them, I plan to avoid the use of these two colours especially on my front page.

What do you like to see in music magazines?

Few people liked to see gossip in magazines, many were more interested in the exclusivity established magazines often have. Gig information also proved particularly popular most young people in the 16-21 age group attend gigs as a way of connected with the band/artist they have gone to support. These results will help me construct my contents page and what I plan on including in my magazine.

Do you prefer text or images?

The majority of people asked seemed to prefer images to text. This said, text is an important element of music magazines. The mode of address used may influence these results, being able to connect with the audience is an important part of already established music magazines. The popularity of images in my questionnaire has allowed me to think about how I could possibly incorporate them into my contents page as a way of connecting with the target audience. I plan to use images that I have taken at gigs to fulfil this.
