GES LM2500+G4 FOR OIL & GAS OPERATIONS

Uprated Gas Turbine Readies for First Shipments as Mechanical Driver
By Mark McNeely
Soon after GE Energys aeroderivative division announced the fourth rating increase of its LM2500 gas turbine to the LM2500+G4, the companys Oil & Gas business has developed a twostage power turbine to be coupled to the gas generator for mechanical drive applications. The new oil and gas product, named the PGT+G4, will be available for shipment in late 2006, according to Gil Badeer, LM product marketing leader for GE. As an upgrade to GEs proven PGT25+ technology, the two-stage power turbine configured PGT25+G4 is specifically designed for applications across the oil and gas industry, including large pipelines and on- and offshore production facilities. The LM2500+G4 is rated at 34 MW, with over 41% efficiency at ISO conditions. The two-stage turbine module is designed to achieve efficiencies of greater than 40%, the company said. The LM2500+G4 is offered with two types of power turbines: a six-stage, low-speed model with a nominal speed of 3600 rpm, or a two-stage, high-speed power turbine (HSPT). The HSPT has a design speed of 6100 rpm, with an operating speed range of 3050 to 6400 rpm. It is sold for mechanical drive and other applications where continuous shaft output speeds of 6400 rpm are desirable. The LM2500+G4 is essentially an LM2500+ with increased flow capacity in the high-pressure (HP) compressor, HP turbine and in the low-pressure turbine. Pressure ratio inceases from 23.6 for the LM2500+ to 24.2 for the LM2500+G4, Badeer said. The extent of design changes is limited to minor blade and stationary vane airfoil adjustments that provide the required mass flow increase, he said. The high-pressure turbine modifications include minor blade cooling improvements and proven material upgrades from recent aircraft technologies that provide improved higher temperature capability, translating into high customer savings. The effective area of the compressor discharge pressure seal was also adjusted in order to maintain the optimum rotor thrust balance. The PGT25+G4 package design and footprint is the same as the present PGT25+, with one significant change. In the dry-low emissions (DLE) version, the fuel gas control features five valves instead of three, enabling more accurate combustion tuning. The PGT25+G4 program, conducted at GEs Oil & Gas facilities in Florence and Massa, Italy, has included the development and validation of the gas turbine subassembly, inlet and exhaust systems, and engine control system. GE also recently announced that three LM2500+G4 engines have been ordered. These LM2500+G4 single annular combustor (SAC) gas generators will be delivered in the first quarter of 2006 to Dresser-Rand for a mechanical drive application. I
