UNITCHALLENGE
Purpose:Theunitchallengeshelpstudentsexplorethebigpicturethemesthattietogethereachunitof Ignite!content.ThesechallengesaredesignedtocomplementtheIgnite!TopicLessons.

Eachchallengepresentsstudentswithanopenendedtaskwithnosinglecorrectsolution.Workingin smallgroups,studentsprepareashortresponse,ineitherwrittenororalform,inwhichtheyuse knowledgegainedbystudyingtheunitsmultimediamoviestoformulateanddefendaparticularposition. Theseresponsescanbeusedtostimulatefurtherclassdiscussionandexplorationoftheissues. NOTE:InordertousethisactivitywithyourclassforaparticularIgnite!unit,youshouldplanon havingstudentsstudytheIgnite!moviesfrommostofthetopicsinthatunit.Otherwise,students willnothaveenoughinformationtocompletethechallengeactivity.

Classtimerequired: 15minutesatthestartofunittoorganizestudentsintogroupsandreviewthechallenge,andfor thegroupstodiscussandrecordtheirinitialthoughtsandcurrentknowledgeoftheissues. 20minutesattheendoftheunitforstudentgroupstocompletetheirresponsestothechallenge. Optional:2030minutesforstudentgroupstopresenttheirresponsestotheclass.

WhiletheClassStudiestheUnitsTopics:Overthenextfewdaysorweeks,asyouareusingtheIgnite! TopicLessonsforthisunit,occasionallyremindstudentstorecordontheirworksheetsanyinformation theyhavefoundintheIgnite!moviesthatmighthelpthemtodeveloporsupporttheirresponsetothe challenge.TheyshouldrecordthisinformationinPartTwooftheirworksheets(TakingNotes).
