How does your presentation relate to the conference theme? (75 words or less) This presentation highlights the relationship inherent between traditional modern aesthetics and current contemporary appeal. Our research is a collaboration of classic choreography and the influence of present day aesthetic. We are studying how dancers respond to choreography from modern dance pioneers and how those responses may change after contemporary adaptations such as music and costuming. Our work not only collaborates across decades, but also showcases possibilities for collaborating old and new vocabularies. How does your presentation demonstrate investigation of a clear question or methodology? (75 words or less) Our presentation investigates the question what in modern dance is aesthetically pleasing and relevant to secondary and collegiate dance students? We notice a negative response to choreography of early modern dance among our peers. We will survey students aesthetic response to classic works and the same choreography restaged with current music and costumes. Our mission is to clear up misconceptions of classical modern and discuss its relevance in todays professional companies, universities and even pop culture. What is the value of the investigation to the field of dance and dance education? (75 words or less) Our investigation discusses the relevancy classical modern choreography has to education and identifies the similarities and differences of old and new choreography. We hope to prompt questions and reflections for the audience. Are the movement theories of the classics still relevant in todays world of dance? How do student biases obstruct learning this material? What are the possibilities of collaborating old and new movement vocabularies? How does the collaboration of different aesthetics shape the future? process, do not put any unique indentifiers in the abstract. (400 words or less) Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman. Chances are these names provoke certain feelings and assumptions. Although their philosophies are taught in educational settings today, current secondary and collegiate dancers stereotypically exhibit a lack of enthusiasm for these old school movement styles. This raises the question, what in classical modern is aesthetically pleasing and relevant to contemporary dance students? Why the disinterest in their roots? How does the collaboration of old and new aesthetics shape the future? We researched students aesthetic responses to classic works and the same choreography restaged with current music, costumes, lighting, and other staging elements.
