This story is about a Chinese farmer and it teaches people patience, understanding and acceptance of life as it comes. It is similar to the lesson Three Questions in the Reader, which also deals with a related theme. The Farmer Once upon a time, a poor Chinese farmer bought a horse to help him on the farm. After a few days the horse ran away and the farmer had to do all the work himself once more. His neighbour sympathised, Thats bad news. The farmer replied, Good news, bad news, who can say? A few days later the horse came back, bringing another horse with him. This was unexpected and welcome indeed! Good news, said the neighbour. The farmer replied, Good news, bad news, who can say? Soon, the farmers son had to go the market to sell vegetables from the farm. He rode the second horse to market. On the way, he was thrown off the horse and he broke his leg. The neighbour sympathized, Thats bad news. The farmer replied, Good news, bad news, who can say? A week later, war was declared in the kingdom and all able-bodied young men left their homes to fight on the battlefield. The farmers son was spared. Good news, said the neighbour. The farmer replied, Good news, bad news, who can say?
