Whats The Point?

l Next month will see the UK, and the rest of Europe go out to vote in the 2014 European Elections. To many, the European Elections might seem like a waste of time after all, what difference does it make? Well, it does make a difference let us give you the lowdown. The European Parliament represents people living in the 28 member countries of the European Union (EU). It has powers in a range of areas that affect member countries including animal rights, consumer rights, the environment, international trade, regional economic development and workers rights. It has the power to approve, amend or reject new European laws. It also approves the EU budget and new members of the European Commission. Who sits in the European Parliament? The European Parliament is currently made up of 766 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) who are elected by 28 EU member countries. After this years elections, the gure will be 751. The UK is represented by 73 MEPs. In the UK, there are 12 European electoral regions and each region is represented by between three and ten MEPs. MEPs spend some of their time in their regional constituencies in the UK and some of their time in political meetings in Brussels. For one week in every month they go to Strasbourg to debate and vote on new European laws with MEPs from other EU member countries. How do you vote? In a European Election, you have one vote to elect all of your MEPs. Each party puts forward a list of candidates known as a regional list and you vote for one of these lists or for an individual candidate standing as an independent. The number of MEPs that are

here and now

elected from each party to represent a region depends on the overall share of votes that each party receives. Why should I bother voting? Voting in any election is important people have died for you to have the right to vote, so whether you agree that were part of Europe or not, not using your vote isnt the answer. Even as you read this article there are people across the world ghting for democracy and their right to vote wasting your vote ies in the face of all those who died as part of the Chartist riots and all those dying in the

Middle East and Eastern Europe in the name of democracy. I have no idea who my current MEPs are. How do I nd out? Thats easy - www.europarl.org.uk has that information, why not check it out? When is the next election? Elections for the European Parliament take place every ve years. The next election is scheduled for May 22. Visit www.aboutmyvote.co.uk for more information on how to vote, how to get involved and other elections.

till trying to get t and toned in time for your holiday? Find it all a little bit boring? Then why not treat yourself to this months essential and get t while having fun! Thats right ladies this months essential is a pair of roller-skates! Roller-skating is a great way to combat a number of things. From helping you to lose weight, to relieving stress, combating sleep deprivation, improving balance and tness, popping on a pair of roller-skates and taking to the streets really is the answer to all of your problems! Roller skating is a great cardiovascular workout which is just as benecial as running and cycling, but with less impact on knees. Its great for toning and works your lower and upper leg muscles. When it comes to burning calories, rollerskating is amazing. A decent skate should see you burn around 350 calories in an hour not bad for a bit of fun, eh? If you dont fancy taking to the streets, why not pop along to Newport Centre on a Friday night and take part in the family roller-skate? Its just 5 per person for entry (excluding skate hire, which is 2) and runs from 6pm to 8pm. So, what are you waiting for? Tone up, burn calories and have fun with the kids! Roller skating really does have it all.

Bird watching is a fantastic hobby, especially for those who love to venture out into the wilderness to be at one with nature. Whats brilliant about this hobby is that you really dont need any equipment or specialist skills to do it all you need is a keen eye and a thirst for adventure and exploration. As we live in such a beautiful country, there is an abundance of different species of bird to be spotted that thrive in our varying landscapes and habitats.

Once youve become addicted to identifying the many types of birds on your travels, branching out to buy a decent pair of binoculars to help you spot them is a good idea (check out this months Man Toy). When you do decide to have a go at bird watching, remember these three key things dress appropriately for the weather, inform someone where you intend to travel, and finally, avoid disturbing birds and their natural habitats. Start your new hobby today by visiting www.rspb.org.uk for more information.

Baby and Toddler Show

A great new family event is coming to the Hilton Newport on April 6. With 40 exhibitors from familyfocused businesses and free activities throughout the day, the Newport Baby and Toddler Show will be packed with products, information and advice for you and your family. Little hands can get crafty with the Creation Station, chat through child sleep problems with the Sanity Nanny, grow little imaginations at Barefoot Books story time, or join a free baby and parent swim lesson in the pool with show sponsors Swimkidz. Theres even a free professionally run crche if you want to take a few minutes to browse the stands

onger and drier days provide the perfect opportunity to leave the car behind and get out an about more so why not do it? A great way to get started is to make your journey either to or from school car free and it can be fun, we promise you. There probably isnt a house in the land with children that doesnt have a scooter (or two, or three) so why not make good use of them and use them as a mode of transport to get to school and back? Using a scooter to get around and about is a fantastic way to get fit and it is way speedier than walking, however, there are a few rules to follow. Scooters should not be used where they will cause danger, fear or inconvenience to other people, or danger to the scooter user. Riders should be particularly careful on hills as scooters can pick up speed quickly. And scooter users should avoid using them in the dark as they do not have lights or reflectors and are difficult to see. Scooters should NOT be used on the road. Motorists will not be expecting to see them among traffic, and because they are so small (especially when ridden by children) they are difficult to see. Their small wheels can easily become stuck in drain covers or pot holes bringing the rider to an abrupt halt, and quite likely throwing them to the ground, in front of vehicles. It is also dangerous to cross roads on a scooter. The temptation is to scoot off the kerb at speed in a bid to beat the traffic. A slight misjudgement could be fatal. It is also dangerous to try to bunny hop up the kerb on the other side. If the hop fails, the rider may fall off or be left in the road with vehicles bearing down on them. Most scooter users seem to ride on the pavement. However, the legal position about riding scooters on pavements seems to be unclear. It has been suggested that they are
48 / WEAREVOICE.CO.UK / APRIL.2014

covered by the same legislation which makes it an offence to ride a bicycle on the footpath. But it seems more likely that police will decide whether or not to take action according to local circumstances. Scooters should not be used on narrow or crowded pavements, or where they will cause inconvenience, fear or danger to pedestrians, especially elderly or disabled ones. The small wheels of scooters have caused accidents on the pavement, where a slightly raised paving block, and even wet cement, have thrown riders to the ground.

To avoid collisions with innocent people, scooter riders need to keep away from areas where they are likely to come into conflict with pedestrians. A shopper walking out of a store will not expect to be confronted by someone speeding past on a scooter. A collision, particularly with an elderly person, could have serious consequences. Scooters should certainly not be used inside indoor shopping centres. THE RULES ARE COmmON SENSE, SO WHy NOT gET THE KIDS OUT AND ABOUT AND DITCH THE CAR? GO ON! GIVE IT A WHIRL!

Walnut
At the end of last summer they completely refurbished the main barn, building a brand new cafe and restaurant, a new soft play area for young children and sheltered play fort full of wonderful things to climb and swing on. Most of the work was undertaken by Jason Scrivens and his son Leon. The new restaurant boasts a varied menu of wholesome things to eat and enjoy whilst you visit the farm park, with ingredients sourced from local suppliers. You can enjoy light bites and snacks, cooked breakfasts and delicious homemade luncheon meals, as well as soft drinks, teas and coffee. The cafe recently scored five out of five for hygiene, and was praised for its innovative kitchen design. As well as the new play rooms and cafe, there have are also been new additions to the Walnut Tree Farm Park family, with baby calves and Shetland ponies among others for you to meet and greet. all over the UK will thrill the crowds. Invited South Wales teams are the Appalachian dancers Brandywine (from Llantarnam) and Shoostring; Cardiff Morris; the two Cardiff clogging sides, Clocs Canton and Cobblers Awl; the Welsh social dancers Cwmni Gwerin Pontypl and Gwerinwyr Gwent, who rehearse in the community hall in Bassaleg; the nimble feet of the ODonnell School of Irish Dancing; Jawahir Middle Eastern Dance, which was founded in Newport in 2002 by Laila Ajbar; and the two Gwent Morris sides, Isca Morris, based in Old Cwmbran, and Chepstows Widders, who are helping to keep a great Borders Morris tradition alive in South Wales. Kemysk translates as a mixture in the Cornish language, and the all-female Kemysk Cornish dancers are a must-see so are Portsmouth-based Appalachian group Chequered Flag. Dancers from Bristol, Oxfordshire, Worcestershire, Dorset, Somerset, Yorkshire - and the well-loved Seven Stars from Wigan Pier, Lancashire complete the line-up.

The jaw-dropping flutes of international superband Flook, the madcap brilliance of Quicksilver, the fiery violin, accordion and guitar of Welsh masters Alaw and the heartwarming magic of North-Easterner Vin Garbutt headline the Tredegar House Folk Festival, which runs from Friday May 9 to Sunday May 11, 2014. The winter storms are past and its Spring again and its high time to get out in the sunshine and celebrate! For the 25th year, the Festival invites you to enjoy the atmosphere of the 17thcentury Tredegar House and its beautiful grounds, home of the Morgan family, later to become Lords Tredegar. One of the family was the Welsh privateer Captain Henry Morgan, who preyed on the Spanish colonies and fleets. He rose to become Governor of Jamaica, and a well-known rum is named after him. s a parent, you need to talk to your child about how they can stay safe online, set rules about what they can do and agree boundaries of how they should behave. You can use parental controls on social networks, online games and browsers or software that can filter or monitor what your child can see. Preventing your children from using the internet or mobile phones will not keep them safe online, so its important to have conversations that help your child understand how to stay safe and what to do if they ever feel scared or uncomfortable Children and young people spend an average of 12 hours a week online. You should start talking to your child about keeping safe online at an early age. Its easier to have conversations about online safety little and often, rather than trying to cover everything at once. As your children get older, and technology changes, make sure you continue talking about what they are doing online and how to stay safe.

KEEPINg yOUR LITTLE ONES

Ask your child what they do online To help you understand what they are doing online, start by asking your child: Which websites do you enjoy spending time on? What are the best things to do on these websites? Which websites would you recommend for a friend? What is your favourite game? Who do you play games with? Know who your child is talking to online Children dont think of people theyve met online through social networking and online games as strangers, they are just online friends. So its important to monitor who your child is talking to. Ask them: Who do you know that has the most online friends? How can they know so many people? How do they choose who to become friends with online? Explain to your child that it is easy for people to lie about themselves online, like their age for example, because you have never met them. Set rules and agree boundaries Establish and explain what the rules are for your child being online. These will depend on your childs age and what you feel is appropriate, but give guidance on: The amount of time they can spend online. The time of day they can go online.

The websites they can visit or activities they can take part in. Sharing images and videos. How to behave online respectfully and to not post anything they wouldnt say face to face. If your child plays online games: Check the age rating of all games before they play. Make sure you know who they are playing with and how much information they are sharing with other players. Negotiate the amount of time your child spends playing online games to avoid addiction. Make sure that content is age-appropriate You know your child best, so check that the websites, social networks and games they are using are suitable for them and their age. Forest
CHILDRENS CENTRE DUFFRyN
Since taking over the Forest Family Centre (FFC) back in November 2013, the team from Duffryn Community Link have worked tirelessly to breathe a new lease of life into the centre.
Centre manager Gemma Davis and her team, receptionist Glenys Browning, cafe supervisor Rosaline Dilger and parent advisor Collette Elais, have managed to acquire funding for numerous activities and events for the whole community to enjoy. We want the centre to be a community hub, where people of all ages can meet up and socialise, as well as learn new skills, said Gemma. Weve reopened the cafe, turning it into an internet cafe which now has a free WiFi service and six new laptops available for people wishing to surf the web whilst enjoying a tasty snack and a refreshing beverage. From this we will be offering computer courses at the centre in the training room. This course will be extremely helpful for those who are looking to learn a new skill and also further their knowledge of computers. As well as reopening the cafe and offering new training courses (90 per cent of the courses on offer are absolutely free), the Forest Family Centre will also be offering childcare services too, thanks to funding from Families First and Newport City Councils Early Years Education budget. Services will include play groups as well as breakfast, lunch and afternoon
tea clubs. Keep an eye out for more details. During the school holidays, the FFC will also have a special holiday club available for children aged between three and 11-years-old, running from 8am until 5pm. There are also loads of events planned for the Easter holidays, with something for the whole family to enjoy. Plans are still being formed, but already confirmed events include an Easter Egg hunt on April 17, and Zacs Wild Adventures on April 23, where you can meet and greet a wide variety of friendly animals. Everyone is more than welcome to

! y t o o S Its
WELL, RICHARD CADELL!
There are lots of attractions at Fun City for people who watch the show. Theres Sootys TV Studio, which is where we have all the props from the current series, like the bedroom set and the kitchen set and the camper van things that kids will recall and there are also items from Matthew Corbetts era and Harry Corbetts era too. Its a bit like, and I hate to use this word because it sounds boring, its a bit like a Sooty museum its an exhibition of Sooty artefacts. Also, theres a big Sooty that comes out at 1pm every day, and then at 3pm every day there is a live Sooty show on the new Sooty stage thats been built. I dont present it, but its a great Sooty and Sweep live show. SO, WHATS THE SECRET OF SOOTy? HOW COmE THE SHOW HAS REmAINED SO POPULAR FOR SO LONg? I think the secret is that its just real traditional vaudeville slapstick. So many childrens shows these days have become so safety conscious and so intent on giving children a moral, or educating them to healthy eating, or there being some sort of lesson. I think Sooty has survived because its never tried to do that. Thats the secret, its slapstick fun. Its pie in the face and now were the only show that delivers that without some sort of moral or some undertone to buy a toy or whatever. I also think people trust it. Its been on television for 60 years, its been going for sixty five. Grandparents watched it so they encourage their grandchildren to watch it and parents watched it too. I think theres something very unique about this being a television show that people want to introduce their children too because they loved it so much and they can all sit together and enjoy it on all different levels. MOST EPISODES OF THE SOOTy SHOW FEATURE A CELEBRITy. IS IT HARD TO CONVINCE THEm TO TAKE PART? Do you know what? Its such an easy sell. We just put an email out saying Hey! Were filming the Sooty Show and the flood gates open. I think its become iconic a bit like the Morecombe and Wise show when everybody wanted to be on that back in the day. Its the only childrens show that can do that. On the last series we had people as diverse as Anne Widdecombe and Brian Blessed what a legend. They wouldnt turn up to do any other kids show its because they trust it. Theres a huge list of celebrities whove done it in the past and they want to be a part of it. And they dont get in the car for money to do the show we have tiny budgets to make it they get in the car for love. WHICH CELEBS WOULD yOU REALLy LOVE TO gET ON THE SHOW? I suppose Posh and Becks would be the ultimate wouldnt it? In fact, there are endless people I would like to get on the show like One Direction. Anyone that the kids are going to like and the children are going to like and no-one has said no so far, so well see what the next series brings. Do you know what? I bumped into Jonathan Ross at Christmas and he said when am I going to get pies thrown at me? Its my turn now. MATTHEW CORBETT FEATURED IN AN EPISODE CALLED CHOCCO CHImP (my

I do hope Richard Cadell of Sooty fame didnt get off the phone from me and immediately head to his solicitor for a restraining order...

ou see, Richard and his buddies Sooty, Sweep and Sue are big news in my house. My five-year-old, Penny, was introduced to the new episodes that are showing on ITV by her granddad last summer and since then our Sky planner is been crammed with episodes of Sooty. I dont think it would be overestimating to say that Ive seen each episode of the current run at least five times. In fact, I think Ive seen some of them Pennys favourites upwards of ten times each. So, when the day dawned to do this interview with Sootys dad, Penny was up like a lark with a list of questions for me to ask. Does Sooty like to have a bath? Is Soo good in school? Does Sweep like Cheesestrings? Those sorts of things made up a list of questions as long as my arm. I cant blame her I was excited too, as was my lovely neighbour Katy whos also watched many an hour of Sooty direct from the Sky planner for her son Jack. (What? No, we dont have a secret crush on Richard Cadell! I dont know what you mean!) Dictaphone at the ready, number dialled, a chirpy hello from the man himself and all of my professional faade dropped. Now, Im no amateur at this over the years Ive interviewed lots of big names. But somehow I just couldnt keep it together as I gushed about how Penny is a hardcore Sooty-ette and how Id seen every episode. I do hope he was flattered not freaked out. Anyway, gushing over, and it was down to business. Richard Cadell and Sooty have a lot going on at the moment theres the TV show, theres the tour and theres Richards theme park in Weston Super Mare, Fun City, which is where Sooty lives. TELL US A BIT ABOUT FUN CITy: Fun City is the amusement park in Brean; its where we film the televisions series of Sooty.

FAVOURITE) DOES HE HAVE mUCH INPUT ANymORE? No, he has no input into the show because hes retired people forget that hes touching 70 now. Matthew was born into it his earliest childhood memory as a baby is looking up and seeing Sooty looking at him over his cot he had to live and breathe Sooty for his entire working life. However, hes a good friend and we keep in touch on a friendly basis and I know he approves greatly of what were doing hence him coming out of retirement to do the Chocco Chimp episode. Hes a pal and hes been very supportive of the whole process. HOW DOES IT FEEL WHEN yOU SEE A CHILD COmPLETELy BUy INTO THE mAgIC OF SOOTy? I love making the TV show but nothing touches my enjoyment of the theatre show. The reason for that is the fact that I get to see and hear the children and their reactions. I know this sounds crazy, but although Im a businessman, I really dont do this (Sooty) for money I do it for the love and for me the moment where it all makes sense is when those children react to Sooty in the way they do. After the show I take Sooty out to meet the kids and have their picture taken, and for me thats so rewarding because you see the magic that this has created. Its still wonderful, in an age where children are driven by computers and laptops and tablets that are so intense, here we have simple glove puppet that has endured for 60 years. And for me to have the privilege of putting that on my hand and seeing children captivated by that, in the modern world, just as they were 60 years ago is just greatly rewarding. THE SOOTy LIVE SHOW HITS NEWPORT ON JUNE 7. TELL US A BIT ABOUT IT. Its a show that is for all the family theres a lot in there for the adults whove grown up watching Sooty on TV. The story is about Sootys birthday party. The first half is about getting ready for the party and the second half is the party. Well have kids on stage and prizes and games and the party. Theres lots of slapstick, magic and an illusion in

the show. Its a genuinely a show that the whole family will enjoy. And that was it my time was up. As much as I could have chatted to the thoroughly affable Mr. Cadell all day, there was no time. I didnt get to ask any of Pennys questions, so I guess well never know how Sooty feels about having a bath. DO yOU LOVE SOOTy? THEN WHy NOT BOOK TICKETS TO SEE RICHARD, SOOTy, SWEEP AND SOO LIVE AT THE RIVERFRONT, NEWPORT ON JUNE 7? TICKETS ARE SELLINg FAST, BUT THERE ARE STILL SOmE AVAILABLE. CALL 01633 656757. gEARINg UP FOR NEW SEASON
Newports Transporter Bridge is open for the new season from Wednesday, April 2.
The Transporter Bridge in Newport is one of just six such working bridges in the world and last year more than 15,000 people visited the heritage attraction. Last year was the first time that visitors were able to walk across the top of the bridge as part of a normal visit and nearly 5,000 people took advantage of this and climbed to the highest point of any of the Transporter Bridges worldwide. More than 100 years ago, workers used to climb the stairs and walk across the gantry twice every day to save the halfpenny fares for the gondola ride. The top of the bridge offers
fantastic views across the Bristol Channel and beyond and are not to be missed. The bridge also stands on the Wales Coast Path, making it part of a wider network of walks. During your visit, call in to the motor house and see Edwardian engineering in action the two 35 horsepower motors which still power the gondola after 108 years. The visitor centre is open all year, and the Friends of Newport Transporter Bridge can arrange for a guide to show you around, and prebooked groups can visit throughout the year, not just during the summer months.

PRICES There is a new pricing system for visitors with every person crossing the bridge being charged 1 single and 1.50 for a return whether on foot, cycling or in a car. Child single crossing 50p. Day visitor ticket (includes access to the motor house and high level walkway) 2.50. Concessions and childs day visit 1.50, under threes are not charged. Are You a Blooming Winner?

Newport In Bloom is re-vamping its competitions for children and schools for 2014.

Blooming lovely gardening tips

March and April are the months to start planting if you are protected from frost in your garden or you start plants off on windowsills or in greenhouses. Winners of the competition tend to have a good range of ower types with lots of colour a dash of red always brings a mixed display to life. If you are gardening in a small space think about going up. There are lots of annual climbers that will quickly dress up a wall or fence or can be grown up canes, obelisks or spires in pots. The faithful runner bean makes a spectacular green plant with scarlet owers that will also give you a harvest French beans and borlotti beans also produce pretty owers in different colours. Morning glory, black eyed Susan, canary creeper and climbing nasturtiums are all easy and can be bought cheaply from seed or as plants.

t is introducing a schools award scheme that will support school gardens rather than encourage them to compete against each other. Prizes will be awarded when a school achieves the next level in the award scheme. To help out, Newport In Bloom will be offering schools a gardening mentor to help pupils with their efforts if they wish. Now, each year there will be competitions in different age groups that are open to children at home, school, nursery, with childminders or at cubs and brownies, etc. This years competitions for children will be tallest sunower for children aged two to four-yearsold; grow a hairy monster in a decorated plant pot (any grassy/leafy plant) for ve to seven-year-olds; make and decorate an insect hotel for youngsters aged seven to nine-years-old; and create a garden on a dinner plate for ages ten and up. In a change from the traditional In Bloom way of doing things, the Newport committee will also

be offering smaller competitions and quizzes throughout the year. For example, it will provide the seeds or bulbs for children to try to grow the best crop of potatoes from a single seed potato. A new category added to the main competition for this year is the community councils open class. Designed to encourage entries from outer lying areas of the city, the class is for a ower display in a bed or containers. Theres also a fab new category for the best display in a quirky re-used container if you grow your beans in a bucket or wallowers in a welly, Newport In Bloom would love to see them. Also new for Newport In Bloom in 2014 is the addition of the website newportinbloom.org The site features lots of information on the schools scheme and the childrens competitions, as well as photos of winning gardens. Why not visit it for more information on how to get involved this year?

When the shoots appear, transfer the whole pot into the soil. Towards the end of April, you can sow everything directly outdoors. Seedlings that have been grown in trays or pots, or under a cloche, need to be `hardened off` by being given limited time out in the real world, With a cold frame - just open the lid. With a cloche - you can lift it off during the day, and return it at night. Seedlings grown inside should spend the day outside and then be returned inside, or be covered at night. It is better to sow a little and often so that you can harvest over a longer period. Keep sowing crops like rocket, lettuce, radish, salad onion all summer long, youll want a small amount over a long period. Youll be able to pick off loads of slugs before they do their damage if you take a look at your plot at night if its warm, and has been raining. ave you started work in your garden yet? If not, April is the perfect time to get planting those veggies ready for summer salads. This month you can sow beetroot, broad beans, early sprouting broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, early carrots, summer lettuce, peas and spring onions as well as summer radish. Onion sets, new potatoes and main crop potatoes can also be planted as can tomatoes, so long as theyre kept in a greenhouse or cloche. If the weather is a little cold, its best to sow seeds in pots rst and wait for ground frosts to deplete before planting in the ground. If you dont have a greenhouse use windowsills in the house, or create your own cold frame outside. Sheets of glass or clear plastic on some bricks is a start, as it keeps the rain off the seed trays or pots, and warms up the soil. Another way is to put trays and pots in a clear polythene bag, and put it in a sunny spot or under a cloche. Plants may come on more quickly if you sow them in trays pots this month rather than sowing then directly into the ground. You can then transplant them into open soil. The exceptions are the

TRIED AND TASTED

The Inn at Penallt

There really is something very special about The Inn at Penallt. Its one of the places that I relish heading to for a Tried and Tested, and its one of those places that Dave and I always promise to go back too, but we never do because time doesnt allow.

o, heading up there on a Saturday evening really was no chore for us. In fact wed spent the week relishing the mission, studying the menus and making our dining choices for the evening. When we arrived we were greeted by the every friendly owner Andy who always makes us feel so welcome. Hes a real natural restaurateur he has such a lovely way with all of his customers. We took Penny with us. Shes shy and to say that she takes a while to warm up would be an understatement, but Andy didnt flinch. He involved her all the conversations we had and made her feel very welcome. A big pile of colouring books and a tonne of coloured pencils were delivered to the table leaving Penny a very happy girl. So, after a week of menu studying we were highly perturbed to find out that the day before our visit the menu had been changed to the new season spring menu. All of that hard work and debate down the pan thanks to the fact that there was a new menu to choose from. Obviously this wasnt a real hardship, but the choice was outstanding and difficult to say the least. The new spring menu is filled with freshness. Theres lots of Welsh lamb, seasonal veg and plenty of local produce. To start Dave opted for the soup of the day and I went for the trio of fresh fish and Penny had a (tailored) selection from the kids menu. The soup the day that we visited was borscht, which made
102 / WEAREVOICE.CO.UK / APRIL.2014

Daves week. Its not very often that borscht appears and so when it does he revels in it. Thankfully, it didnt disappoint every drop was enjoyed. My starter, well I could have eaten that easily five or six times over! The scallops were tasty, perfectly cooked and were incredibly fresh. The smoked salmon element of the dish had a crispy skin and was smoked perfectly. Seared mackerel accompanied the two, along with a pea puree and a horseradish cream. Lovely. Really, really lovely. Pennys meal came at the same time as our main courses; a lovely bowl of spaghetti pasta with a side of cheese. This was adapted a little form the usual kids menu (which is excellent) as Penny isnt big on sauces nonetheless it was delicious and she really enjoyed it. Ok, so on to the mains. Presented beautifully, it was one of those dining moments where there is no need to speak. Eating is all that needed to be done and it wasnt until we were both a good threequarters of the way through our meals that we looked up at each other to nod approval. My main was out of this world. I chose the Taste of Borders Beef red wine braised oxtail, slow roasted top of rib, beef burger in a brioche bun with the Inns amazing triple cooked chips. The oxtail was like the very best low roasted beef in the world ever. It was delicious -as was the topside of rib, which the knife went through like butter. The homemade burger in the brioche bun

complimented both perfectly. Probably the best meal Ive ever eaten. Dave ordered the pan fried calves liver. Served with the Inns own home-cured bacon, fried apple, crispy fried onion and Herefordshire cream mashed potato, he devoured the whole plate, only stopping to mumble about how the apple was an amazing addition to the dish. Thanks to Penny sneakily eating half of my chips, I had plenty of room for dessert. Unfortunately I wasnt able to order one of everything, so I stuck with the rice pudding brulee while Penny went for the chocolate ice-cream. Pennys ice-cream came served with a generous portion of blueberries, raspberries and strawberries and she thoroughly enjoyed it. My rice pudding dessert was incredible. Light and tasty with the accompanying brulee topping making it the best Ive ever had. Now, this review might sound like Im gushing a bit too much, but seriously its all well deserved. Why not book a table and try it for yourself? Visit www.theinnatpenallt.co.uk for menus and information or call 01600 772765 for a reservation. ONE OF tHE GREAtESt LOVE StORIES EVER TOlD

Love means never having to say youre sorry. This famous quote from the hit 70s film will bring back fond memories for everyone who saw it.

//

Now, a new musical version, inspired by Erich Segals best-selling iconic novel, is being presented by Newport Playgoers at the Dolman Theatre. One of the most romantic films of all time, it tells the moving story of Oliver Barrett IV who went to Harvard and Jenny Cavilleri, a student at the less well-to-do Radcliffe. He was rich, she was poor. He was sporty, she played music. But they fell in love. Their romance is as poignant as it is enriching, as sweet as it is intense. Love Story will win your heart - and

it might just break it. The musical has been adapted from the highly successful tear-jerking romantic film of the same name which starred Ryan ONeal and Ali McGraw. Recently graduating from the University of South Wales she quickly made her mark with an urban adaptation of Romeo and Juliet which sold out at The Riverfront Theatre and left a lasting impression on all who were involved. Both Newport City Radio and Wales Arts Review had great things to say about the show which you can find on their websites. The play was recently asked to be performed again due to the amount of people who missed out on tickets the first time around! With this success, Alex has decided to put another piece of her work into production this July. The Game is a gritty, psychological thriller which delivers a tale of sex, power and manipulation. The main character, Jasper Henry, is a charming young property developer from out of town. With no knowledge of his past, or where he came from, his mystery excites and intrigues the local residents, especially Layla Martin. Jasper introduces Layla to a dark new world, one of which she never knew existed, and that she would eventually regret discovering. Jaspers bold confidence and blatant sex

appeal fascinates Layla as she allows herself to become completely consumed by him and The Game he so loves to play. This is a game that involves seducing and controlling strangers for the thrill, creating characters and new identities. However, when Layla finds herself being questioned for murder, the excitement soon becomes that of a nightmare. Alex said: This play really reflects my style of writing I think. I worked on it all through university and it is definitely my baby I have huge plans for it in terms of marketing and advertising which is very exciting. I really want to highlight Newport talent with this, that was always the plan. I have a full Newport-based production team who have so many different skills and talents that are going to make it great. Ive also had a huge response from actors from the university. Im so proud that its almost acting as a hub for creative people in Newport to showcase their talents. For more information call 01633 656757. The Game will hit the stage at The Riverfront on July 17, 18 and 19 (16+).
