Clever alternatives to
traditional dyed
Easter eggs
Easter is a time when Christian families gather to
celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Religious
customs abound on Easter, but a number of secular
traditions have emerged as well. Perhaps the most
popular secular tradition associated with Easter is the
coloring of Easter eggs.
Easter egg dyeing kits emerge in early spring.
Consumers have a variety of alternatives to these kits
at their disposal. There are some people who desire
more environmentally friendly Easter eggs, so here
are some creative and greener ideas for coloring eggs
this year.
* Wooden eggs: Visit a craft store and purchase
wooden eggs that can be painted and decorated
however you desire. The wooden eggs will be durable
and can be stored away for use each and every year.
Because they are made of wood, a naturally
recyclable material, they are easy on the environment.
* Consider natural dyes. Use different food items to
create all-natural dyes for the eggs. Tea, fruit and
vegetable juices -- even packaged drink mixes -- can
be used to tint Easter eggs in various colors. Because
youre controlling the materials you use, you can
ensure they are safe to use.
* Experiment with papier mache. This ancient paper
crafting technique uses recycled paper and a paste to
create a hardened mold. Turn excess scraps of paper
into delightful eggs put on display for the holiday.
* Make edible eggs. Traditional Easter eggs can be
wasteful if the eggs are boiled and used entirely for
display. Rather, make eggs that will be enjoyed and
are not at risk of spoiling too soon after being on
display. Gelatin-dessert eggs is one way to use the
eggs after Easter, and creative people can try crafting
eggs out of meringue as well.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Women
who undergo routine mammograms at
University Healthcare Berkeley Medi-
cal Center now have the latest screen-
ing and diagnostic technology avail-
able to them.
University Healthcare of cials re-
cently announced that 3D breast to-
mosynthesis (tomo) for breast cancer
screening is now available in Berkeley
County at the Womens Imaging Cen-
ter, located in the Tennessee Avenue
medical of ce building across from the
Berkeley Medical Center campus.
Berkeley Medical Centers Womens
Imaging Center is equipped with the
latest generation of mammography
equipment from Hologic. Tis new
digital mammography system allows
physicians to look at 3-dimensional
images that can show very small breast
cancers.
Breast tomosynthesis is a revolution-
ary technology that gives radiologists
the ability to identify and characterize
individual breast structures without
the confusion of overlapping tissue.
During a tomosynthesis exam, multi-
ple, low-dose images of the breast are
acquired at diferent angles. Tese im-
ages are then used to produce a series
of one-millimeter thick slices that can
be viewed as a 3D reconstruction of
the breast.
Tere are more than 8,000 breast can-
cer screening sites in the U.S. Nearly
5,000 have at least one digital mam-
mography system. Less than 100 have
installed this newest generation of dig-
ital mammography equipment. When
University Healthcare Jeferson Medi-
cal Center opened it Womens Imaging
Center in 2011, it was the frst hospital
in West Virginia to ofer 3D breast tomo.
University Healthcare is committed to
the fght against breast cancer, stated Te-
resa McCabe, vice president of market-
ing and development. By ofering the
latest in mammography technology at
both of our University Healthcare medi-
cal centers, we hope to increase the num-
ber of area women who will be routinely
screened, she added.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause
of cancer death among women, exceeded
only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate
that one in eight women will develop
breast cancer sometime in her lifetime.
Te stage at which breast cancer is de-
tected infuences a womans chance of
survival. If detected early, the fve-year
survival rate is 97 percent.
