Zach Wood Science 2 10/11/13 Modeling Osmosis MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow

when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar? HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I hypothesized that the water will flow into the egg because vinegar has a higher percentage of water than a whole egg. Vinegar has a percentage of about 95% water and an egg only has about 74% water, since water diffuses from a high concentration of water to low this will make the water go into the egg because it has a lower concentration of water. First the shell protecting the membrane has to dissolve from the 5% acetic acid in vinegar from a chemical reaction. Then the water will be able to flow into the egg. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13.3 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 OBSERVATIONS The egg is bubbling Water displaced by 50 ml. CONCLUSION In this lab we studied the effects of osmosis. We placed an egg in a beaker of 250 ml of water for four days. On the fourth day, my groups egg expanded by 2.8 cm, which is 0.1 cm more than the 7th grade average for eggs. The eggs expanded because the water had to flow from a place with a high concentration of water to a place of low concentration. The weak acid dissolved the shell of calcium carbonate to get to the selectively permeable membrane. Since the vinegar has a higher concentration of water then the egg, the water molecules could flow freely into the egg so it expanded. I hypothesized that the water would flow into the eggs to make them expand, my hypothesis was correct 100% of the time. ANALYSIS 1. What caused the eggshell to dissolve? The eggshell was made of calcium carbonate that had a chemical reaction with the weak acid in vinegar. The chemical reaction dissolved the eggshell to get to the selectively permeable membrane.

2. Period 7 Group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days, compared to Group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. Compare the results of these two groups. What was the difference in expansion? What was the rate (distance/time) of expansion in 4

Zach Wood Science 2 10/11/13 Modeling Osmosis days? Explain the discrepancy in data. Why did these groups get different results? Group 3s egg expanded 3.4 cm more than group 7s. Groups 3s expanded by 4.5 cm and group 7s expanded 1.1 cm. These groups might have had huge differences in data because a lot of the eggshell was not exposed because of touching the bottom and not letting the egg expand as much.

3. Why do cells need water? Cells need water to help chemical reaction for life and water gives cells shape.
