CATCHING! Grade Level: K-5 Lesson Length: 30 minutes; 4:15-4:45 Number of Meetings per Week: 1 Number of Students: 18-20 Skill Level: Precontrol/Control/Utilization Skill: Catching and Vertical Jump Movement Concepts: Space Awareness, Effort, Relationships Needed Material: Paper money and paper coins, tape, four laundry baskets, soccer balls, footballs, whiffle balls, foam balls, Source: Graham, G., Holt/Hale, S. Objectives: At the end of the lesson the children will be able to: 1. Understand the proper catching form 2. Know the cues for the catching form (stance, triangle, target, squeeze) 3. Understand when to jump while making a catch 4. Know the cues for the vertical jump (stance, load, explode, reach, land) 5. Properly demonstrates the triangle step of catching Instant Activity Pay Day! Paper bills and paper coins will be placed at different heights on the wall all over the gym. The class will be divided up into two teams. Each team will be divided up into two. On the whistle, the first group will go around and try collecting as much money as possible. You are only allowed to have one piece of money in your hand at a time. Once you retrieve money from the wall, run to the bank and deposit it. Then go back to collect more money! Each team will have 40 seconds to collect as much money as possible. At the end of the round have the students count up their money. Place money back on wall and go again for round two. Task One Goody Bag Class will be divided up into 2 teams. Each team will have a designated thrower. Both teams will be given a laundry basket with all different types of balls. The thrower will throw the balls to their teammates. When a teammate catches a ball they will run and put it in the basket at half court and then join the thrower and throw their teammates the ball. This continues until all the ball are thrown and caught. Task Two Around the World Class will be divided up into two groups. Each group will spread out around the point line on the basketball court. The catcher will be standing in the paint. On the whistle, the students on the three point line will throw the catcher the ball. The catcher will catch the ball then place it on the ground. Once they have caught all the balls from teammates, everyone runs into the paint and grabs a ball then runs back to the three point line. The catcher grabs a ball this time. Student without a ball becomes the new catcher. First team to get through everyone wins. Closure Today we performed the proper form of catching a ball. Can anyone tell me the cues to catching? How about jumping? What is the most important part of implementing a jump while catching? When does one jump while making a catch? I hope you all had fun today!
