Anesthesia and Analgesia-June,

1923

National Anesthesia Research Society Week of Experimental Pharmacology

COURSE I N experimental pharmacology was held in the interests of the National Anesthesia Research Society at the University of Cincinnati, Colleqe of Medicine, for one week, beginning January 8, 1923. T h e Society, which is growing iiito international scope, is primarily interested in the practical application of general and local anesthesia t o the relief of human suffering.

HE COURSE was made possible through the leadership of Dr. Dennis E. Jackson, Professor of Pharmacology of the U. of C. College of Medicine, who has devoted a great amount of time to the
research phases of anesthetics and narcotics. The course consisted of lectures, demonstrations and experimental investigations, in the lecture halls and laboratories from g a. m. t o 6 p. m., and evening conferences on the day's work at the Hotel Gibson to interchange the experiences and results of the different teams. Those in attendance were divided into three teams, under the captaincies of Drs. Frances E. Haines, W. I. Jones and Ben Morgan. Each team developed a certain fixed program of pertinent pharmacological experiments calculated to review the basic fundamentals underlying all anesthetics and collateral drugs. Added to this, various members of the different teams worked out incidental problems that had a direct bearing on clinical anesthesia in the operating room. Among the special problems dealt with were the use of controllqd pressure and rebreathing in anesthesia; the prolonged administration of the more highly volatile anesthetics with oxygen ; carbon dioxid absorption during anesthesia and metabolic reactions under ether and nitrous oxidoxygen.

Prof.-Jackson pcrsonalIy delivered two Icctures

o n t h e pharmac3logy of anesthetics. Prof. A. P. Mathews spoke most interestingly on the oxygen-carbon dioxid theory of the action of anesthetics and drew attention to the work of hi; asscckte. Dr. Tashiro, along these lines. Prof. Martin H. Fischer gave a resume of his researches in edema, nephritis and acidosis and their clinical application in the prevention of complications in anesthesia and surgery. Gr. Alfred Friedlander dwelt on the diagnostic value of tonal arrhythmias in bad risk patients, and Dr. J. E. Greiwe supplemented this with a detailed consideration of electrocardiographic studies of heart conditions in relation to anesthesia. Mr. John A. Higgins also gave a special demonstration on the ccrnparative potency and toxicity of focal anesthetics and showed the value of pituitary extract in combating ultra lethal doses of local anesthetics. During the course Prof. and Mrs. J. V. Lawrence demonstrated the various tests for determining the purity of anesthetic agents and isolated ethylene for experimental purposes. Those present are shown in the accompanying illustrations, reprinted Af,.dicinc. It is through the courtesy of Tlrc L4mC?'1r.c1nJoiir,inl of Clkic-t~l hoped that such weeks of research will be repeated at intervals and in different points of the country to enable the anesthetists to take part and benefit thereby.
