Lesson Title Subject & Unit Magnetic Fields Grade 2 Science Date Time Thursday, March 20 1:00-2:00

Specific Learning Outcomes

6a: I can show that a magnetic field will pass through most materials.! 6b. I can show that magnets have different strengths.
Instructional Objectives

1. Students will explore and discover the power of a magnetic field! 2. Students will explain that a magnetic field will pass through most materials.
Key Questions What is a magnetic field? Why does a magnetic field pass through different materials? Does the strength of a magnet effect the materials the force will pass through? Print copies of the performance task Make cards with magnet words on them Observations At carpet- Who answers the questions correctly? During work period during check in (lining up for gym)

Preparation

Materials

Passing Through Materials experiment booklet- all students should already have in science folder Magnetic Fields booklet

Procedure Method Introduction! Gather students to colourful carpet & review last weeks experiments (Centres): What happened at each centre? Call on students randomly (Popsicle Sticks) to review what happened at each centre. ! - Passing through Water! - Passing through Foil! - Passing through Rice! - Passing through Air Time

! Ask a few students to share what they learned. Ask a few students to share any questions they may still have about magnets. ! ! Explain that in a few minutes, students will return to your desks, find your booklet in
your red Mad Scientist folder, and finish up this final page- This will count as a check in! *Differentiate for those students who struggle with writing!

5-10 min. ! 1:00-1:10

! Explain second activity (for when they are finished their science experiment booklet):

Magnetic Fields book - Read through the first 2 pages of the booklet: As a class, fill in the blanks. Discuss the pictures throughout the book and where they will find the answers to the remainder blanks. - Students will fill in the blanks in the booklet, cut and put it back together, then colour it. When they are finished the booklet they can practice reading their Magnetic Fields booklet to a partner who is finished. Body! Give students time to complete both the experiment booklet and the Magnetic Fields booklet. Magnetic field book can go into their folder when finished- collect experiment booklets. ! * Put magnet words on the board to assist with spelling Once all students are completed both assignments (*Magnetic Fields Book at least cut out and put together with blanks filled in), gather students back to the colourful carpet. ! ! ! As a class, review Magnetic Fields. What are they? How do they work? What kind of materials will they pass through? Does it matter the size/strength of the magnet? etc. ! - Have students return to their desks. Raz Kids A-Z (Magnets) ! - Display the magnet book on Reading A-Z on the SMART board for students. Introduce Performance Task to class: - Read through the description - Brainstorm some materials they may be able to use, both magnetic and not - Brainstorm some ideas for the kind of toys they can design: how might they work?! - Show them how it will be assessed: What information will they need to tell the class about their toy? - Explain that they have three days over the weekend to think of a toy design they might be able to use. If they find any spare materials over the weekend, bring them to school on Monday to help you design your toy! Conclusion & Transition! Ensure students desks are tidied and everything is properly put away. ! Draw students names from the cup to line up for gym: In order to line up, students must tell me something they know about how magnets work (ex. Describe magnetic fields, materials magnets work through, the rule for how magnets are attracted to each other, etc.) ! Sponge Activity(s)

5-10 min.! 1:00-1:10

~ 20 min.! 1:10-130

5 min. ! 1:30-1:35

10 min. ! 1:35- 1:45

10 min. ! 1:45-1:55!

5 min. ! 1:55-2:00

Students can begin to brainstorm ideas for their toys and draw them in their booklet Brain Bubble Read to Self/Someone quietly
