Montage
Date: February 15, 2014 Course: COMM130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: This is a picture montage that I made using 3 images and typography in Photoshop. Programs: This montage was made completely in Adobe Photoshop. Objective: Objectives included blending multiple images in order to create an insirational message for people in the sports industry. Process: I made the montage using AdobePhotoshop. I searched for different pictures on Google and found a few that I liked. I learned a lot about Photoshop since I have not used it a whole lot. I found 3 images that I really liked and that I felt would be good for my message and then placed them into Photoshop. I then layered them on top of one another and used masking to blend the dark colors and smoke effect from the trophy image. I also had to use the lasso tool to move the basketball hoop closer into the picture to avoid a tangent with a cut off rim. I also placed a motion blur effect on the dunking player to make it look a little more like he is flying through the air. I had to place the multiply blending mode over the motion blur to get the picture to look darker and not so exaggerated or blurry.
Brochure
Date: March 29, 2014 Course: COMM130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: This is a brochure I created using a custom logo from Adobe Illustrator and laid out in Adobe InDesign. Programs: This brochure was made using Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Objective: I wanted to promote a trip for Art Academy students to Mexico using a brochure. Process: I used Adobe Indesign to create the layout and design of my brochure. I also used Adobe Photoshop to clip the pot image in order to get the text wrap around the pot and middle paragraph. I used paragpraph styling to arrange each paragraph how i wanted as well as get the bolded headings and the following paragraphs to look the same throughout the brochure. I used the rulers a lot in InDesign to get the brochure layed out correctly so the folds would line up and so that printing would turn out correctly. I ended up having to print a few times, at least 4, to get everything lined up and looking how I wanted it to.
Web Page
Date: March 15, 2014 Course: COMM130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: A webpage I created to showcase a logo that I had made in Adobe Illustrator. Programs: I coded this webpage using Notepad++ and TextWrangler. The logo was made in Adobe Illustrator. Objective: To showcase a logo I made on a webpage for the whole world to see. Process: I made the logo using Adobe Illustrator. I created the web page using Notepad++ and TextWrangler. I took an HTML file and created the text layout I wanted with Headers and Paragraph tags. I added a few strong tags for bold and some unordered list tags to create the bullet points. I also used the HTML file to load the image of my logo onto the page using an image tag. I then linked a CSS file to my HTML file in order to design the layout of the page adding colors, borders, and textures. I also used the CSS file to change font colors and create margins for the text and image. I used proper color schemes and images for background and texture.
Logos
Date: February 22, 2014 Course: COMM130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: I had to create 3 different kinds of logos with different color schemes for a company of my choice. I chose to do them for a photography company of a friend. Programs: I created all 3 logos using Adobe Illustrator. Objective: Create 3 appealing logos using different types of logos and color schemes for a company of my choice. Process: I used Adobe Illustrator to create all of the logos. I had never used Illustrator before so it was all a completely new experience. I used the eclipse tool to create the pink umbrella and then used white circles to cut out the umbrella shape. I also used the pen tool to trace an image of rain drops to get the rain for the top logo. The brush tool was used on the third logo above the U to get it to look like the top of an umbrella and I simply erased half the U to get it to look like an umbrella handle. The rest of the process was taking and editing text shapes and colors to get the text to look how I wanted, I made sure to use contrasting type fonts on different logos to get lots of contrast and variety.
Event Ad
Date: February 1, 2014 Course: COMM130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: This is an Event Ad that I created. The event I chose to do was a bingo night fundraiser for the Senior Citizens Center. Programs: I only used Microsoft Word and an Epson Scanner for this project. Objective: Make a visually appealing event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word. Process: I made this entire Ad using only Microsoft Word and an Epson Scanner for the image. I, like many people, am used to using Microsoft Word but not usually for these purposes. I learned a lot of new ways to use Word and its design elements. I knew some very basic design uses for word but really acquired some new skills with this project. I feel confident now that I would be able to use Word for many basic design projects much like this one.
Letterhead
Date: March 1, 2014 Course: COMM130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: Some stationery that I created for a business I created. I created letterhead by incorporating a logo I created for a business of my choice and adding contact information. Programs: The logo was made in Adobe Illustrator and the letterhead was put together in Adobe InDesign. Objective: To create functional letterhead for a business. Process: I created the logo in Adobe Illustrator by altering the text of my first and last name. I basically chose a font I liked and then put a rectangle down the center of the letters and used the pathfinder window to divide the top half of the letters from the bottom half. I then spaced them how I liked and left the rectangle down the center. I used the pen tool to get the rounded corners how I liked on the J and the S. I then imported my logo into Indesign and layed out my letterhead how I wanted. I used simple text boxes and lines to arrange everything how I wanted.
Business Cards
Date: March 1, 2014 Course: COMM130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: Some stationery that I created for a business I created. I created these business cards by incorporating a logo I created for a business of my choice and adding contact information. Programs: The logo was made in Adobe Illustrator and the letterhead was put together in Adobe InDesign. Objective: To create functional business cards. Process: I created two 3.5 by 2 rectangles in Adobe InDesign to show the dimensions of my business cards. Then using the same logo that I used for my letterhead I laid out the business cards how I liked. I used simple text boxes to arrange text how I needed. I rotated the logo on the backside of the business card to create some asymetry.
Flier
Date: January 25, 2014 Course: COMM130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: This is a flier that I made for a graduate conference for aspring business graduates. Programs: I made this flier using Adobe InDesign. Objective: To produce an attractive flier to promote a graduate leadership conference. Process: This flier was made in Adobe InDesign. Ive never had any experience with InDesign before so this was a first effort at creating a visually appealing flier. Using FOCUS principles I decided on my audience and desired message and then organized the layout accordingly. I contrasted whites and blacks using a dark to light gradient on the small rectangles and tried to create visual flow from these contrasting lights and darks. I then unified the parts by keeping the text close in proximity to the attention grabbing question Do you want to have the competitive edge in business? Then, finally I simplified my final draft by enlarging the overall title and aligning the text, picture, and logo.

Photodesign
Date: February 8, 2014 Course: COMM130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: This is a photodesign project I made to demonstrate good photography and image editing skills. This project also showcases my ability to use appropriate color schemes with my designs. Programs: I used a simple point and shoot camera and edited the photo using Adobe Photoshop. Objective: To edit a photograph that I took and make an inspirational design. Process: I started out by selecting a color scheme I thought would be nice to use. I knew I wanted to use an outside picture so I knew I would probably have blue, yellow and brown. I decided I would use a split complementary color scheme using gold blue and brick. I used a simple digital camera to take the photo of the train tracks outside my apartment and then used Adobe Photoshop to edit that picture using the design techniques of levels, vibrance, color selections, and the sharpen tool. Then I began to design the rest of my layout. I found a motivating quote from the internet and then I used rectangles to create a train track and I also placed colored boxes underneath the train tracks to use as my color swatches.
