Montage
Description: Date:
An inspirational montage made by the blending of two or more images, and the use of typography. 2/15/2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 6 Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to manage photohop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Use filters. Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

I started off by cropping the background image to 8.5x11. I selected the picture of the hands of my wife and I on the flowers and moved it to the background and added a mask. With black paint and a 100% opacity, soft-edged brush, I painted away the hard edges of the image. With a larger black brush at 30% opacity I blended the image in to the background, so it looks like the image is blending into the sky. I repeated the process with the picture of my two kids. I finally added some type with two contrasting fonts and I added a filter (grain) to give the picture some charater.

Logos
Description: Date: Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 6 Joel Judkins Three logo variations for the same company.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives: Process:

Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image. Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

This was a lot of fun to create a logo in Illustrator. I first used the ellipse tool to creat the button. I then created four small holes in the button so that it would look like a button. After doing so I used the pathfinder tool the eliminate the four small circles from the large circle to give it the button look. Most of the other elements are just typography. I made sure to chose contrasting fonts. I also tried getting more contrast by changing the sizes of the words.

Letterhead

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Design consistant layouts for a business card and letterhead. Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:

I positioned and placed the logo in the top left corner of my letterhead. I made sure to keep it at least .5 in away from the edges. I then typed my contact information into a text box and positioned it on the right hand side of the letterhead. I added some dashes that look like needles across the top of the letterhead. I also added a large color version of the logo as a watermark.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or persoanl image. Design consistant layouts for a business card and letterhead. Use the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign.

Process:

I used the rectangle tool to create the front and back outline of my business card. I then coppied/pasted the logo and contact information onto this page. I kept the logo and contact information about the same size as the information on the letterhead. I made sure that no important information came any closer than 1/8 in. from the edges. I also brought the needles into the business card to help unify the stationery pieces. Finally I colored the backside of the business card and added the website of the company.

Event Ad
Description: Date: Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 6 Joel Judkins A full-bleed color event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word Epson Scanner

Objectives:

Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Use text boxes for layout in Word. Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:

I scanned the image of the golf course, and inserted it into the ad. I chose one font with contrasting weights for simplicity. I was really surprised at how much I could do with the desgin features and I had no idea Word had those features. Now I know that if I get a job at a company that doesnt have the Adobe suite I can still create quality projects using Microsoft Word.

Brochure

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Create a professional looking tri-fold brochure. Creating folding lines to position each image and text. Wrap text around an image.

Process:

I did a tri-fold brochure layout. I started by creating fold lines in InDesign where I would fold my brochure. I then found four high quality images that would be placed throughout the brochure. Three of the images would be on the inside of the brochure and the fourth image would be the back of the brochure. I then added text to the inside of the brochure and wraped part of a text around one of the images. I created the hole logo in Photoshop then copied/pasted it into the brochure to be on the back side and the front flap.

Web Page

Program(s)/Tools:
Text Wrangler Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Write content to describe the prcess of creating your logo and how it appeals to a targe audience. Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS. Identify hex colors for web design. Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process:

I created this web page using only Text Wrangler. After I marked up all my content and inserted my imgae, I attached a pre-made CSS document to my HTML. I then used the colors from my logo as the colors for my web page. I found these colors by opening Photoshop and using the eyedropper tool. I also changed my fonts to Arial. I declared some backup fonts just in case the viewers browser didnt have these fonts. I put my logo in a pattern as the background of the web page. That for me was the hardest part.

Program(s)/Tools:
Canon Powershot Camera Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Size and crop the image. Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. Desaturate the selected portion of the image. Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process:

I took this picture using my little Canon PowerShot camera. Even though it was a point and shoot camera I was able to take this nice shot. I then took my image into Photoshop and cropped it to a 6x6 inch square. I then selected the background using the rectangle tool.

Flier
Description: Date: Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 6 Joel Judkins Black & White promotional flier to promote a graduate leadership conference.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.

Process:

I first created some sketches of my layout. Then I used my sketch as a guide to create this layout in Adobe InDesign. I used black boxes for repetition and contrast. I left white space and kept my body copy small. I was given the image, logo, and content for this flier.
