Zachary Styx Public relations officer Alpha Sigma Chapter Sigma Chi Fraternity Letter to the editor: A pledge

against Greek hazing

To the editor of the Minnesota Daily: I would like to clarify a few things regarding the article A pledge against Greek hazing written by Brian Reinken. First, I would like to defend all sororities on campus by saying absolutely no members of sororities were forced in any way to have sex with any members of my respective fraternity, and trust the same is true for the other fellow IFC fraternities. [Victims] seek inclusion in a particular community, and they understand that initiation may include hazing. I would like to respectfully disagree with this statement whole-heartedly. All national fraternities and sororities have extremely strict laws against hazing. It is clearly stated in my fraternitys code of conduct: I will respect the dignity of all persons; therefore, I will not physically, mentally, psychologically, or sexually abuse or haze any human beings. The statement above was the second statement listed in the code of conduct, the first reading: I will strive for academic achievement and practice academic integrity. Why, then, should an archaic and elitist institution remain so close to the core of college life?

You can find the answer to this question above. Again, I trust all IFC fraternities follow a similar guideline. Academics are just as imbedded into our traditions as anything else, if not more. Many of the IFC fraternities have consistently had semester GPAs above the University of Minnesota mens and womens average. I personally believe that we belong so close to the core of college life because academics are a top priority among Greeks. Because [Professional, cultural and LGBT fraternities and sororities prospective members] already share a common interest, cause or identity, their loyalty to the organization is unquestionable from the beginning. This stands in stark contrast to traditional social organizations, whose members may apply because of family traditions, vague notions of future financial success or simply a desire to fit in with a crowd. I disagree on behalf of the entire Greek community. I do believe that professional, cultural, and LGBT fraternities and sororities are fantastic examples of college organizations at their finest, but I see no stark contrast with social organizations. Members rush social organizations for a wide spectrum of reasons: brother/sisterhood, academic accountability, the desire of holding a position, community/philanthropic action, and involvement in conjunction with other organizations are a few to name. These interests are plenty common among members. -more-

Brutality is inimical to higher education. We should not permit it to reside within college culture. I agree! Thats why all social organizations take extreme precautionary actions against hazing to ensure that our members focus on academics and personal development. To all members of AE, I applaud your progressive changes and I wish the very best for the future of the chapter at the University of Minnesota.
