1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

The film It Happened One Night is a classic example of the post-code film era. The female character, in this case the one of the main characters, is not a party going flapper. The days of satin dresses, drinking, and liberation were over. Even though Ellie Andrews is dependent of her fathers wealth and of her marriage to gain independence from the same, she is determined to make it to New York on her own without assistance from her wealth. She wears a sort of business or classic suit and never reveals skin until she uses her leg to hitchhike. In todays time, its not even provocative, but in post-code it was attention grabbing. Then we have the great example of snapping dialogue which is only intensified even more in a battle of the sexes screwball comedy. Im not a big fan of censorship and of religious-conservative views manipulating any type of media or artistic outlet. However, if there was one good thing that came out of the post-code era was the development of snappy dialogue. Peter Warnes excessively winded explanations on how he was to write a book about the most trivial habits, how to use the thumb correctly for hitchhiking, was both entertainingly silly and smart writing at the same time.

2) Find a related article and summarize the content. (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) You can use the library or the internet. We will discuss suitable references in class. Cite the article and copy the URL to your journal entry. You should also mention the title of the article and author directly in the answer. Summarize in your own words the related article but do not plagiarize any content. In Sidney Gottliebs article titled From Heroine to Brat: Frank Capras Adaptation of Night Bus (It Happened One Night) he considers the difference between the film and the inspiration for it. In the short story title Night Bus, written by Samuel Hopkins Adams, the characters are very different from that of the film. The article breaks down the differences in several key scenes which have their corresponding equivalents between the film and the story.

The story describes the female character as a strong, resourceful yet privileged woman tired of being an heiress, a strong contrast from the image of women from the 1930s. The male character in the story is not the dominating damsel-in-distress-hero rather a sensitive painter who never gets into fight unless absolutely necessary. Theyre more on the same level and equally passive or active depending on the situation; theyre complimentary to each other.

Article, basically, applies itself to the film since it explores the differences between the film and the short story regarding the characters. However, an interesting detail about the analysis is the authors mention that the film is highly regarded and quoting better than it has the right to be. The main topic is how the characters were transferred to become more relatable to the audience by having the female character nave and helpless. In addition, Capra, the films writer, made the male character as dominating and in control as the men of the times.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of 4 things: the screening, class discussions, text material and the article. I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director. I enjoyed the film in general. It was fun, light, and very similar to the romantic comedies that we find todays cinema. However, not that Im of the backstory regarding the source of material, the short story Night Bus, and the issue of the post-code era, it brings more to my table. Although, Im not a big fan of censorship and of right-wing government involvement in morality, its very interesting how it did

indirectly help to created clever writing. As opposed to showing sexual tension and attraction through blatant imaginary the film uses smart banter and subtle queues to represent such sentiment.

CHECKLIST FOR PLAGIARISM 1) (x) I have not handed in this assignment for any other class. 2) (x) If I reused any information from other papers I have written for other classes, I clearly explain that in the paper. 3) (x) If I used any passages word for word, I put quotations around those words, or used indentation and citation within the text. 4) (x) I have not padded the bibliography. I have used all sources cited in the bibliography in the text of the paper. 5) (x) I have cited in the bibliography only the pages I personally read. 6) (x) I have used direct quotations only in cases where it could not be stated in another way.
