Discussion question #1- Getting to know you 1.

What do you think of when you hear the words "social studies"? When I hear the words social studies I think about the words north, south, east and west, compasses, latitude and longitude. Which go under the topic of geography and that topic covers things about the earths land and waters. 2. Describe your elementary school. I went to Pat A. Diskin Elementary in the Spring Valley area here in Las Vegas. I attended this school for kindergarten, first grade and third to fifth. What I remember there were a lot of Hispanics and there were about 3 classes per grade level with about 30 students per class. I believe many were middle class families with a couple who were a little lower. 3. What do you remember from your elementary school social studies experiences? The only things I remember is we used to go to another class to learn about social studies and I remember learning about geography a lot. We learned about longitude, latitude and made our own compasses. We also learned a way to remember north, east, south and west by remembering the phrase Never Eat Soggy Waffles. We didnt take notes or read from textbooks and I cant recall if we had any projects. There were no field trips specifically for that class, but just general field trips for an entire grade level. 4. Share a little about yourself. My real name is Neoscary, pronounced just the way you think it would be, Neo like the guy from the matrix or the rapper Ne-yo (not a fan of either of the two things) and scary like the word scary, but since fourth grade Ive gone by Neo. I was born in Miami, Florida, but I was raised here in Vegas since I was a year old. My birthday is 3/23/93, so that means I will be turning 21 this coming March. Most people think I am 15 or 16 since not only do I look young, but I am also 411. I am a huge book nerd. Reading is a great stress reliever and great entertainment for me. I love small children since I am a huge kid at heart, so I would love to be able to teach kindergarten, but first and second grade is good too. 5. What do you want to learn or improve in this class? I would like to learn all the topics that are covered in social studies since all I can think of is geography. I would like to learn more about all those topics, how to teach it correctly and activities I could use. I dont remember much about my elementary social studies experience, so I would want to learn enough so my future students dont say the same years later. 6.
