INFLUX OF CAR REFUGEES CONTINUES

The influx of refugees from CAR continues with more than 5,000 new arrivals per week. Since January, 62,000 new refugees have been registered. The status of some 5,000 persons recorded by authorities still has to be verified. The total of CAR refugees in Cameroon stands at 165,000.

TWO PRIESTS, ONE NUN KIDNAPPED

Two Italian priests and a Canadian nun have been kidnaped by armed men in Maroua district on 4 April. In November 2013 a French priest had been kidnapped in northern Cameroon and released one month later.

AFTER RECENT INCREASE IN BANGUI

In Bangui, new violence has reversed the trend of IDPs returning home. Over the last three weeks, the number of IDPs in the capital increased from 177,000 to 208,000. An IOM survey indicates that intention to return is decreasing. There are 632,000 IDPs in all of CAR, and the imminent rainy season is bound to deteriorate sanitary conditions in the camps and increase the risk of epidemics.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, on his visit on 5 April, highlighted the importance of the protection of civilians and called for the immediate deployment of more peacekeeping troops. In the meantime, the European Council authorised the deployment of 1,000 troops for a six-month period in support of French and African forces in CAR.
CHAD ANNOUCES WITHDRAWAL FROM MISCA

The Chadian Government announced the withdrawal of its 850 soldiers from the AU peacekeeping mission (MISCA) after accusations of them being responsible of violence against civilians.

Since December 2013, 94,000 people have fled CAR to Chad. Most are of Chadian origin and thus considered returnees. 62,000 remain in transit centers, mostly in the South near the CAR border.

The Ebola outbreak in Guinea is ongoing with 151 suspected cases, 54 confirmed positive, and 98 deaths. New cases have been reported from Conakry, Guekedou and Macenta. Neighboring Liberia reports five confirmed cases, including two deaths. Mali reports nine suspected cases near the Guinea border. Testing is ongoing.

CLASHES BETWEEN HERDSMAN AND FARMERS

01 07 April 2014

On 6 April, 79 people were killed in clashes between cattle rustlers and farmers in Zamfara state, according to local authorities. The incident occurred few days after a pledge of pastoralists and farmers to cooperate with the government and the police in finding solutions to the disputes over land and grazing rights.
