CARPE DIEM SEIZE THE DAY!

The theme for Upward Bound Summer 2014 is Carpe Diem. Most of you should remember this as some great advice given us by Father Jim Nadeau, guest speaker at the January UB Saturday College and an alumni of TRIO Upward Bound. It is indeed our fondest wish that our students will seize the day, make every day count and realize your full potential! We have been very busy planning for the upcoming summer, and want you to part of the process too! We are once again looking for the summer t-shirt design created by you! Students will vote at the May UB Saturday, so you have some time to create your t-shirt masterpiece and either give it to your UB advisor, or bring it with you in May. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind: Designs should include the theme Carpe Diem and Upward Bound 2014. We do not accept computer generated designs artwork should be hand drawn. All submissions need to be completed on an 8x11.5 sheet of paper. Sign your artwork on the back all submissions will be voted on without knowing who the artist is. The winning artist will be recognized as soon as voting is over.

TRIO DAY

TRiO Day was a great experience for me personally because it answered a lot of questions that I had about college. Also, since it was held in Massachusetts, the state my top choice for college is located in, it was great for me to meet many different people from the area and get a feel of how being in that atmosphere would be every day. TRiO Day is a day where all TRiO programs come together to talk about college and further unite the "TRiO family." We all stayed at the same hotel and had all sorts of activities there. We attended workshops, listened to TRiO alum speakers, had a big social gathering, and got to visit a college in Massachusetts. There was also a college fair and a panel of alum who answered questions that the students asked. My favorite part was simply experiencing new people. There was a strong presence of diversity, and I loved that about the experience. Sincerely, I would recommend this trip to those who want to further themselves into the college experience. When you go, there will be many you may not know, but going to TRiO Day will let you expand your comfort zone and gain cultural awareness as well as receive respectable advice from past TRiO alum. Do not miss this opportunity to reach out and find a little more of yourself. Mariah Farrington-

TRIO day 2014 has been one of the highlights of my Upward Bound experience. I felt so honored to be able to represent my own TRIO program. I met so many interesting people at TRIO day. The guest speakers were extremely motivational and their message really got through to me. My favorite part was when some TRIO alumni did a Q&A for everyone. Their stories were very motivational. It showed everyone that TRIO really does work. TRIO day was a once in a lifetime experience for me that I will remember forever. I highly recommend every UB student eligible for this next year to apply for this wonderful experience. Kate LeavittApril 2014

Your SAT test date is not too far away!

Trio day was a wonderful experience. The six of us selected to attend this trip were very honored to go. I personally recommend that each student applies next year for this wonderful opportunity. Once we got down there, we met up in a wonderful hotel where each group was sent to a college to tour. In our tour we learned all about the great things that the college offered. After finishing the college tour, we met up for a rally to show how wonderful Upward Bound is! Concluding the rally, we went back to our hotel to have dinner, guest speakers, and your choice of going to the dance, games, or the other activities offered. The next morning we got up, had breakfast, listened to a panel answer questions about their experience in Upward Bound, and finally to the college fair before we hit the road! My favorite part about the Upward Bound Trio Day was the wonderful time to get to come closer with the girls who went down! I recommend everyone apply because it is a wonderful way to learn more and help support UB! Megan McKnight-

TRiO day was a phenomenal experience not only in the value of learning about collages out of state but learning about the diversities and the large amount of TRiO family we have. My favorite part of TRiO day was the Alumni panel, not only did we meet former TRiO students we got to ask questions and learn about how TRiO affected them and helped guide them to college and the experiences that come after. It was during my favorite part where I received some amazing advice in the form of two words TIME MANAGE. College is full of wonderful clubs and events that we often forget that we are there for education. This advice was also followed up with another part of college I had never given much thought about and that was to make sure you have someone that's just a drive away for support. In all, the whole trip was the highlight of my Upward Bound year and this event is so helpful that I recommend that all the upcoming juniors try to attend. Brittany Baird-

Mariah Farrington and Kali Pelletier had a busy day, preparing a presentation board and speaking to legislators about the importance of TRIO in Maine.
