Animal Use
As the global leader in eye care, Alcons commitment to research and development exceeds that of any eye care company worldwide to transform eye care possibilities into therapeutic realities. Companies that develop medical products for human use are required by regulatory health authorities worldwide to test new medical therapies in animals before testing in human beings. These tests are required to confirm the accuracy of findings and to ensure quality, safety and efficacy of these medical products before they can be used in humans. When these tests require the use of animals, Alcon strictly adheres to guidance from theAssociation for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), through which we are accredited, and follows the internationally accepted principles for humane animal use in research the three "R"s: Replace tests with non-animal testing methods wherever appropriate. Alcon extensively tests all new products using non-animal laboratory procedures and limits animal testing only to that required to secure regulatory approval of new products. Reduce the number of animals used in each study. Alcon actively explores other testing methods first, to ensure that as few animals as possible are used in our testing. Refine testing to use the least invasive and painful method feasible. Alcon testing is rigorously designed to limit pain and invasiveness of testing procedures.

Environmental Sustainability
To achieve environmental sustainability, Alcon continues to focus on three main processes. Regulatory Stewardship Alcon has implemented a network of processes and tools to assure that our manufacturing sites, affiliates and associates are aware of the environmental regulatory obligations specific to the global activities and services of Alcon. Product Stewardship A synergistic approach where Alcon focuses on the environmental impacts of our products through the product life cycle which includes impacts in the design phase of our products and on our post-consumer product wastes.

Operations and Design Alcon continues to assess our environmental impacts due to our activities worldwide. The primary emphasis includes the assessment of natural resource consumption and the potential for developing environmentally sustainable operations.

ISO 14001
The Environmental Management System (EMS) at Alcon is a global management system structured to appropriately integrate environmental regulations and issues into our division policies, planning and operations. In 2010, North America manufacturing operations at Alcon began the transition from operating under individual site certificates to one "global" ISO 14001 certificate held by the Alcon Division Health, Safety, and Environment group. The South American and European operations have also begun to join this certificate with all Alcon Manufacturing Operations worldwide assimilated by year-end 2014.
