LasL AugusL our group of seven Leachers
and carers seL off for hnom enh, where,
LogeLher wlLh our Cambodlan parLners,
we hoped Lo make a real dlfference ln Lhe
llves of some of Lhe mosL preclous
chlldren we have ever meL ln our llves.
Cur work load was dlvlded beLween Lwo
maln groups of chlldren: 12&!3, an
orphanage for chlldren who, for a myrlad
of reasons, have no famlly Lo supporL
Lhem, and !" $"%&'()'*& +"% ,*-'*&%
(45!6), a klLchen pro[ecL provldlng meals
and baslc hyglene faclllLles Lo
approxlmaLely 230 sLreeL chlldren dally.
8oLh groups presenLed our Leam wlLh
Lhelr falr share of challenges buL we [usL
rolled up our sleeves and goL down Lo Lhe
buslness of Leachlng Lhrough fun.
AlLhough Lhe chlldren had never qulLe
experlenced anyLhlng llke our classes,
Lhelr enLhuslasm was lnsLanL and word of
our classes qulckly spread - lL ls no
colncldence LhaL we'd sLarLed off wlLh
abouL 12 sLudenLs aL L8uL and ended up
wlLh 70 by Lhe sLarL of Lhe second week.
AlLhough Lhelr knowledge of Lngllsh
ranged from non-exlsLenL Lo baslc, lL
wasn'L long before Lhe chlldren had
masLered baslc phrases ln Lngllsh LhaL
Lhey would undoubLedly flnd helpful aL
school - and ln Lhe sLreeLs where,
unforLunaLely, many of Lhem musL work.

Sadly, Lhe lmporLance of educaLlon as a
way ouL of ab[ecL poverLy ls noL fully
undersLood by parenLs and relaLlves , who
are also noL educaLed and remaln
lgnoranL Lo Lhe beneflLs of schoollng.
1helr prlorlLles and confused aL besL, and
Lhe cycle conLlnues.
We reLurned wlLh a llsL of 63 hlgh-prlorlLy
chlldren who needed supporL Lo go Lo
school. 1he money - less Lhan t1 per day -
for sponsorshlp wlll go Lowards school
maLerlals, unlforms and, cruclally, food for
Lhelr famlly, freelng Lhe chlldren from Lhe
burden of havlng Lo work.
We are happy Lo reporL LhaL we have
found sponsors for almosL all of Lhem, and
hope Lo secure sponsors for Lhe resL
Lhrough a serles of fundralsers we wlll be
organlslng as an nCC.

1he resLauranL feeds close Lo 230 chlldren every
day. Moreover, L8uL offers Lhe sLreeL chlldren a
few of hours of refuge from Lhe ouLslde world
and Lhelr oLherwlse chaoLlc llfe. lL also offers
Lhem, Lhrough a well-admlnlsLered sponsorshlp
scheme, a posslble alLernaLlve Lo worklng Lhe
sLreeLs.
L8uL was co-founded and run by Lhe salnLly Mr.
Chlv wlLh a group of dedlcaLed workers and
carers, alded by Lhe numerous volunLeers who
are lucky enough Lo walk Lhrough Lhe
resLauranL's doors, and Lhe generoslLy of
hundreds of donors from around Lhe world.

chlldren's home. 1he organlsaLlon was
founded ln 1997 by Mr. en Sophan, Lhe

Lhe poor sLaLe of posL-war Cambodla. under
Lhe flrm buL carlng eye of co-founder Mrs.
Cuk Monlnarom, chlldren resldlng aL SlCuA
are freed of Lhe burden of havlng Lo work for
Lhelr food. 1he chlldren Lhere have Lhe luxury
of shelLer, regular meals, and a baslc
sLrucLure wlLhln whlch Lhey are more llkely Lo
grow and develop lnLo successful adulLs.
AlLhough Lhe orphanage does geL some sLaLe
fundlng, Lhls only amounLs Lo $10 per monLh
per chlld, coverlng Lhe chlldren's very baslc
needs. 1hrough sponsorshlps, godparenLs
conLrlbuLe conslderably Lo Lhe chlld's upkeep
lncludlng food, school maLerlals and unlforms,
