at the young age of 3,
Karli was diagnosed with
retinoblastoma, a rare cancer
of the lining of the eye. Karli
underwent 6 rounds of a
new procedure called Intra-
arterial chemotherapy and
completed her treatment
in March of 2009. If all
goes well, Karli still has
to go to NYC at least every
8 weeks for exams for the
next few years and no less
than twice per year for life.
Karli’s story is nothing short
of miraculous! Now 4 years
old, Karli is known as the
“Little Cheerleader” seen

Makenzie had a
racquet ball sized brain
tumor removed in September
2008 just 4 days before her
and her twin sister’s 8th
birthday. After surgery,
Makenzie couldn’t walk or
sit up, was blind, and her
speech was limited. She
is now no longer blind,
can walk, talk and use her
arms and hands because
of extensive therapy. She
has completed 8 cycles of
chemo and has 1 more to
go. Makenzie is a 4th grader
at Stoner Creek Elementary
School but is currently
receiving homebound
teaching while her counts
are low and misses her
friends and her church. She
auditioned for the school
play which she will be a
part of in February. She
says “God picked me to have
cancer because he knew I

to protect the BEP from
any of the reductions that

state government right now.
Wilson County maintained
a combined BEP funding,
for both the city and county
schools, of approximately
$59.68 million.”
Lynn and Bone
further elaborated on the
Health and Social Services’
appropriations benefiting
Wilson County residents:
$1.61 million for Children’s
Services; $263,000 for
Community Mental
Retardation Programs; and
$2.16 million for Health
services, with nearly $19
million of the Health funds
for TennCare.
“Because of the
revenue decline, this budget
reflects some very painful
decisions that impact
many statewide programs.
Without significant growth
in revenues, additional
reductions will have to occur
next year as well,” they said.
“As we struggle to maintain
a balanced budget, I intend
to continue to minimize this
impact on the many vital
state-funded programs and
services now present in
Wilson County.”
This year’s balanced
budget was achieved through
a number of important
decisions, Lynn and Bone
said, including:
· Making more than
$750 million in reductions
· Using a significant
amount of one-time funding
· Not raising taxes
· Not taking money
away from the Highway
Fund
· Not taking State-
shared taxes away from
local governments
“We continue to work
hard to make sure Wilson
County gets its share of
Federal funds,” Beavers

Department is encouraging
parents, homeowners,
children and motorists
to take special safety
precautions this Halloween.
Many goblins, witches, super
heroes, and princesses
will come out in numbers
when children begin to
trick-or-treat. Additional
police officers have been
scheduled to patrol during
the evening to ensure that
Mt. Juliet’s children are safe
and vandalism is kept to a
minimum.
Officers will
patrolling in marked and
unmarked cars. Mischief will
not be tolerated. During their
patrols, many of the officers
will be promoting safety and
passing out candy to the
children. The department is
encouraging residents and
children to meet their local
police officers while they are
out looking for treats.
“Our officers promote
safety at all times, but this
night is especially important.
Drivers must remain aware
and drive with care since
children will be out on local
streets,” commented Chief
Andy Garrett.
With safety a number
one priority, the following
tips should be considered:

The Dangers of Bullying
After seeing on the news recently that a teenage boy had been horrifically burned over
75% of his body after being doused with rubbing alcohol and set on fire by bullies, I felt compelled
to remind everyone on the dangers and destruction of lives caused by bullying. This is a perfect
example of how bullying is much more than just hurtful words and teasing. For example, did you
know that bullying is one of the biggest concerns of young people today? Bullying is a serious
problem with 8 out of 10 children bullied at some point in their childhood. Bullying happens at
school, at home and on the streets. A lot of young people don’t even realize they are making other
peoples lives miserable. They think they are just joking in making fun of or bullying someone. The
truth is it hurts to be bullied and can change someone’s life for ever.
Bullying happens when someone picks on someone and makes their life miserable.
Bullying can come in many forms from kicking, smacking, tripping, making fun of, threatening
or sending out false messages and rumors about the person over the computer. People have
been bullied because of their size, accent, weight, color of their skin, stance on certain issues,
interests, or just because they are the new kid on the block or at school. Bullies are often
insecure and pick on others to make themselves feel more important and powerful.
The sad thing is what a bully doesn’t see. Their bullying can lead to low self-esteem,
suicide, revenge and even assault or murder. These are all things that can be avoided. If you are
someone you know is being bullied, there is help. If you’re bullied, you should tell someone. It’s
very important to get other people involved.
If you are being bullied it can feel like the whole world is against you and that you are
own your own. Not true! The worst thing to do is to sit back and accept it. It won’t get any better
unless you do something about it. If you are the victim of bullying at school you should contact
your teacher, the principal or the guidance counselor for help. If the bullying occurs on the
streets or away from home you can contact your parents or the police. And if the bullying takes
place at home, you need to advise your parents. Bullying is also a problem with adults. Most
child bullies grow up to be adult bullies. The only thing that changes is the age of the people they
bully or intimidate.
Bullying is not just a kid’s game. It is a practice that ruins lives and causes scars that can
last a lifetime.
In closing, help and advice is out there. Don’t accept bullying.
