Angela Jacobs ENC 1101 28 March 2014 I Spy With My Little Eyes Given the debates pro or against drones, they do have benefits worth having. The advantages drones provide range from protection of wildlife, lower crime rates, other problems that occur locally, and against terrorism. Drones look similar to a toy-like aircraft, but contain GPS receivers, sensors, cameras, and an onboard computer system (Brooks). These machines are pre-programmed with software of routes or can even navigate on their own. With these aspects, they are capable of taking photos and collect data as needed. Drones are used in areas of military, farming, and aerial photography (Brooks). There is a variety of drone sizes, says Denis D. Gray, Ranging in size from less than half a kilogram (pound) to more than 18 metric tons (20 tons). In continuation of drone details, the next statement in this paragraph will be something to think about before knocking off drones completely. If our government holds back, theres the freedom to move elsewhere and all of a sudden these things will be flying everywhere else and competing with us ( Joan Lowy). A factor that should make an opposing individual feel more opened toward drone use is given in the sentences below. Civilian drone use is limited to government agencies and public universities (Joan Lowy). To also add from Joan Lowy, he has introduced a bill that prohibits the FFA from issuing drone licenses unless the applicant provides a statement explaining who will operate the drone, where it will be flown, what kind of

Rivera 2 data will be collected, how the data will be used (Joan Lowy). For those who do not know what FFA stands for, it is the Federal Aviation Administration. First, we would use drones against terrorist situations. compared with a 500 pound bomb dropped from an F-16, the grenade- like warheads carried by most drones create smaller, more precise blast zones that decrease the risk of unexpected structural damage and casualties (Byman). As a result, less innocent individuals will get harmed with a regular bomb. These drones have the capabilities to take photographs of areas that humans may not be able to reach or see greatly in details. Henceforth it will lead to misidentification being lowered. Drones have also undercut terrorists abilities to communicate and to train new recruits (Byman). Along with another capability, drones also hurt terrorist organizations when they eliminate operatives who are lower down on the food chain but who boast special skills (Byman). There are controversies with using drones instead of going in initially with weapons to plausible terrorist locations (Byman). From the capabilities of drones, terrorists will run into problems with communication, which is important in constructing any plans amongst many individuals (Byman). Although, there are negative aspects toward drones. These include the expense to even create them, the complexity of drones, and diplomatic problems (Byman). The U.S. must get basing and over flight rights by foreign countries that the U.S. would like to send the drone to (Byman). A good relationship is needed for foreign flights to occur (Byman). Drones are very complex in their programming to create and use the kind of technology to fully use it correctly (Byman). Along with the expenses for these drones, the defense budget is an additional hindrance (Byman). Having drones in massive effect have people worried and may lead to more aggression from foreign countries A Problem that may occur with the drones flying over vase foreign area there may be issues in international security. Another issue that may also have

Rivera 3 people second guess the use of drones are if the people who are in charge change the original goal of the drone illegally. However, drones bring more benefits than negative aspects for the U.S. civilians. In addition, drones are helpful in the local view for citizens. For an example of local advantages, we will have lower crime rates with drone surveillance. There are many uses of the drone besides decreasing criminal activity. The overall benefits UAVs present are tracking criminals in hot pursuit, watch borders, locating bombs, reaching difficult places for humans, plus find lost/stranded hikers and children, monitoring weather and wildlife (Sengupta). According to Joan Lowy, The unmanned, generally small aircraft can steer water and pesticides to crops with precision, saving farmers money while reducing environmental risk. They can inspect distant bridges, pipelines and power lines and find hurricane victims stranded on rooftops (Joan Lowy). In means of crime, to find a criminal from view within the ground visual sense is more difficult, having the ability of an aerial view can get the process going quicker. No criminal deserves the chance to get away with their bad deed. In contrast, citizens feel that more surveillance is unnecessary. But the drone industry and those eager to tap its potential are running headlong into fears the peeping-eye, go-anywhere technology will be misused (Joan Lowy). These individuals feel that their rights from the 14th amendment are being pushed aside and the feeling of discomfort. In the thought process of everyone, the need for rules and regulation came about to be ensured to the people for security reasons. To go into details of the 14th amendment, this law gives people citizenship rights and equal protection under the laws overall. People may worry that those in control of these machines are possible peeping toms and violate more personal boundaries that what they are originally intended for. Even with the stakes at hand, drones still have a higher hand in safety benefits for civilians.

Rivera 4 Finally, Wildlife and nature are receiving a helping hand from drones. By watching for any issues of deforestation occurring in a particular area to begin with and following through with wild life animals. Drones are also being put to more benign uses in skies across several continents to track endangered wildlife, spot poachers and chart forest loss ( Denis D. Quad). These kind of drones are referred to as drone rangers. These rangers are to help keep a watchful eye on poacher movement and activity. Poachers are people that kill animals in means of earning money from selling for example, their fur, tusks, any money worthy qualities. In recent statistics and according to the Wildlife Conservation Society, a decline of African Forest elephants are occurring (Goodyer). Along with Rhinoceroses as well, with a death of 668 Rhinos in South Africa just from poaching related deaths (Goodyer). Poaching has increased by 43% by research founded by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (Goodyer). With the ability of aerial view more ground can be covered and kept protected from poachers. As well as habitats are being secured by these eagle eyes. Director Sumatran is testing drones in Indonesias Tripa peat forest where fires set by pam oil growers are threatening the worlds highest density habitat of the great apes (Denis D. Gray). The list of positive uses of drones seem to grow in comparison of the negatives reported by people. While, The University of Florida is testing another war on terror weapon, thermal imaging, to hunt for Burmese Pythons invading the states Everglades, having found the snakes regulate temperatures of their nests in a way that makes the visible through such technology ( Denis D. Gray). In conclusion, there are many advantages and disadvantages from drones. From the thoughts of violating privacy to other opinions of having a form of security range in battles still to this today. To always remember, drones have a higher beneficial factor on a local and worldwide position for the people it serves. With that in mind, deep thought process of drones

Rivera 5 should be given some consideration. Will risking an individuals public privacy for a safer environment be worth it in the end? Home privacy shall not be really an issue with these given uses of drones, one safe haven of privacy for people.
