hat does one do after being in the auto leasing business, baking business and then retiring? If youre Jim DAmbrosia, you open up Lincoln Gold and Coin. Ive been retired for 11 years and think I retired too early. I still have a lot more to give, D'Ambrosia said. Its a fun and exciting business. Anyone watching Pawn Stars, DAmbrosia said, will understand

a little of what will be going on in the store. Lincoln Gold and Coin purchases and sells coins, precious metals, jewelry and unique collectibles. If you can carry it into the store, we want to see it, D'Ambrosia said.

Unlike Pawn Stars, the store will not purchase large items such as cars, cannons and other unique items seen on the television show. Additionally, Lincoln Gold and Coin will not be a pawn shop. Inside Lincoln asked D'Ambrosia what the catalyst was for starting his own collections. Lincolns new business owner explained, My very first unique, and expensive, collectible was a carved ivory letter opener that came out of the estate of Oliver Hardy.

APRIL 2014 INSIDE LINCOLN

The friend he received it from told D'Ambrosia to hold onto the letter opener because it would be very valuable someday. D'Ambrosia had it since he was in his 20s and today has approximately 150 ivory letter openers. People have spent a lifetime collecting things that were/are very important to them, DAmbrosia said. However, our children dont have any interest in them. When the time comes and the things are part of the estate, the survivors may just toss the items. My advice is to dispose of the things while youre still alive because you know the value and then leave the money for the kids if thats what you want to do, or better yet, spend it because if you dont, they will! D'Ambrosia said with some amusement. Since the idea of the store came to him in 2010, D'Ambrosia said he looked for just the right location. That location was in the

historic part of Lincoln. The new business is in the old alterations section of Almas Bridal Shop on 547 Lincoln Blvd. I hope the business is well-received by the Lincoln community. So many people have been excited about the fact that were opening, D'Ambrosia said. I plan to offer a service to people who are looking for a fair and honest shake of things they no longer need ...jewelry, collectible items. Pay Lincoln Gold and Coin a visit by bringing in one of your treasures or looking for something else to add to your collection.

Use Earth Day mentality every day of the year

BY DEBBIE BROWN
INSIDE LINCOLN

ince 1970, April 22 has been deemed Earth Day and is globally recognized as a day when we all need to recognize how our actions affect the world in which we live. Whether its an enormous public event, a small neighborhood activity or individuals looking for ways to better our planet, no contribution is too small. Over the years, we have incorporated the habits of recycling, creating compost bins and turning off lights when not in use. Following are some littleknown facts and ones we may tend to forget that will help us continue to strive for a healthier planet. Go straw-free or at least use paper straws. According to the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), plastic accounts for 90 percent of the trash found in the worlds oceans. While this trash may just look unsightly, at least 267 species of marine life have been known to have suffered from entanglement and ingestion of plastic debris. Shop for durable and longlasting products. We have become a throw-away society. Whether its razors, disposable cookware (think turkey roasting pans) or other items that have become a part of everyday lives, we waste a lot. Recently, the belt on my bread maker went out. When I called the manufacturer, I was told a replacement was not available so I should just buy a new unit! Remember the day when a landline phone would hang on a wall for decades. Today, we get new cell phones every few years, without even thinking about it. Recycle your ink and toner cartridges. Most home printers have cartridges that can be

PHOTOS BY DEBBIE BROWN INSIDE LINCOLN

When we sit down at a restaurant or go through the drive-through, plastic straws are usually given out with whatever drink you order. With plastic being bad for our environment, consider using paper straws or even reusable ones.

refilled. I recently filled the toner cartridge of my laser printer and saved myself about $75 by not having to purchase new cartridges. And I didnt have to toss the old ones into a landfill. Reuse printer paper. If you dont use a document that comes out of the printer, save it for note paper or use it to print something on the other side. Additionally, little kids dont need clean paper to create masterpieces; give them your printer rejects and let them draw to their hearts content. Obviously, if youve printed any documents that contain per-

sonal information such as social security numbers, credit card numbers or drivers license numbers, you should take the appropriate steps to make sure these pieces of information are not given to anyone who is not meant to have them. Dont release balloons outside. Metallic balloons can get caught in power lines and create outages. When latex balloons are released, they have to pop and land somewhere. Remnants of the balloon can be

ingested by animals, which can cause suffocation. Use reusable bags for your shopping. By using reusable bags, youre not only helping the environment but its a lot more convenient for the shopper. How many times has a plastic or paper bag ripped open on the way to your car, only to have that jar of pickles or carton of eggs break? I recently purchased a set of reusable bags that fold up into their own pouch. Theyre heavy

duty and one of the bags is a freezer bag that is used for items from the stores frozen section. If you do need to use a paper or plastic bag, make sure that you repurpose it instead of throw it away. Use a tea kettle instead of a pan to boil water. Measure the amount you need and only heat that amount. It takes more energy to heat water in a pot than it does in a kettle, and by measuring the water, youll be saving that precious resource. Make sure your refrigerator and freezer doors close tightly. If you cant trap a piece of paper in the door, then the seals may need to be replaced. If your seals are worn out, valuable energy is leaking from the unit and costing you additional money. Recycle your running shoes. In 1993, Nike created

You may feel that your efforts alone won't make a difference. However, were all on this spinning globe together and by educating our friends and family to look for new ways to keep our planet clean and green, we can all look forward to a cleaner and healthier tomorrow.
Reuse-A-Shoe and uses the recycled materials to create athletic courts, tracks and playground surfaces. Kill roaches naturally. No one likes to have roaches, but if you have them, leave the insecticides at the store and have a bottle of soapy water on hand. Give your uninvited visitors a squirt on their head and lower body; they should be dead within about a minute. You may feel that your efforts alone won't make a difference. However, were all on this spinning globe together and by educating our friends and family to look for new ways to keep our planet clean and green, we can all look forward to a cleaner and healthier tomorrow.

We used to get asked if we wanted paper or plastic. Now, were asked if we brought our own reusable bags. If you forget your bags at home and have to use disposable bags, be sure to save them and repurpose them for future use. Whether its to take your lunch to work, carry home wet bathing suits from the beach or to bring along when you walk your dog, plastic bags should not be discarded as soon as you get home from the grocery store.

Recipes for Easter and Passover

BY DEBBIE BROWN
INSIDE LINCOLN

CRUSTLESS QUICHE
1 cup ham 1/4 cup diced onion 1/4 cup diced green bell pepper 1/4 mushrooms spinach (optional) 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese 8 eggs 2 cups milk 1 (16 ounce) package frozen hash brown potatoes, thawed (optional)

Easter and Passover are a wonderful time of year. A time of new beginnings, remembering why we celebrate and gathering with friends and family. With any good celebrations, you need to have good food! Whats great about these two recipes is that they can easily be altered for Passover or used as listed for your Easter celebration. For Passover, substitute your favorite vegetables for the ham in the Crustless Quiche.

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 7x11 inch casserole dish. In a large bowl, beat together eggs and milk. Mix in cheese, ham, onion, mushroom, green pepper and spinach. Stir in the thawed hash browns, if you choose to use them. Pour mixture into prepared casserole. For my recipe, I divide it into two pretty pie dishes. Cover with aluminum foil and bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 30 minutes until eggs have set.

PHOTOS BY DEBBIE BROWN INSIDE LINCOLN

Eggs are always a great base for a brunch casserole. Its actually one of those kitchen sink recipes you know, the kind where you can include everything but the kitchen sink. It can be made completely vegetarian or loaded with bacon for that bacon lover in your family.

Easter is a time of celebration and rebirth. One of its traditions is decorating eggs, hiding them and other activities that are centered on this symbol of Easter. The most famous Easter egg celebration takes place on the White Houses south lawn. This year will be the 136th year and more than 30,000 participants will enjoy what used to be an event only open to family members of the White House staff. Lincoln also has special activities planned for April 19, the day before Easter. Since the clubs inception in 1955, the Lincoln Lions Club has put on an Easter egg hunt for kids up through third-grade. This year, the two baseball diamonds and an open field at McBean Park will be the

Gardens can still look pretty during a drought

BY DEBBIE BROWN
INSIDE LINCOLN

If youre looking to make a drastic change to your landscape, look at professionallylandscaped places in magazines or visit some of your favorite historic places.
PHOTOS BY DEBBIE BROWN INSIDE LINCOLN

etween the drought that California is experiencing and the rising costs of water in our town, many residents are looking at ways to change the landscapes of their yard. If youre not ready to completely uproot your yard and start from square one, there are simple steps you can do that will help preserve our precious aquatic resource. As we can all see from various neighborhoods, water runoff typically occurs at sidewalks and other hardscapes in your yard. By creating a strip next to walkways, the runoff can quench the thirst of some beautiful flowers. Better yet, remove more of the

grass from your yard and create some planting beds. A drip system will take much less water than your lawn. When looking at ways to change your landscape, plan on putting plants together that have the same water needs or even plant flowers that dont need a lot of water to survive. Lavender, salvia, yarrow, hostas and Dusty Miller are some perennials that will add beauty to your yard, while not requiring as much water. While annuals tend to require more water, zinnia, cosmos and marigolds don't get quite as thirsty and will hold up better during the dry times. Container gardening is another

way to add beauty to your home, while being mindful of the water budget. Flowers, herbs and vegetables can all be grown in containers, whether you're doing it because of a space issue or water conservation. When looking for herbs, select ones that have a Mediterranean origin. According to Better Homes and Gardens, these herbs can grow well in less than desirable soil and when water is not as plentiful. In addition to being able to use the herbs at your dinner table, many of them also attract butterflies with their beautiful color. Fennel, rosemary and oregano are just a few of the herbs that smell wonderful and are easy to grow in the hot Lincoln climate. Since spring is all about new beginnings, what better time to tear up your entire yard and relandscape with drought-tolerant plants and other items that bare yard. Regardless of whether youre planting with the drought in mind or you just want to be a better gardener, mulch is essential in any garden. Not only will mulch retain water but it will also keep down weeds. Why is it that weeds will grow in any condition and always where we want them the least? Other elements to add to your new yard might be some sculptures, ornamental grasses and succulents. Although the thought of warm pavers on a hot summer day may not appeal to you, this effect can be lessened by using ground covers to offer a cooling effect. Placing mosses, Baby Tears or alyssum between the gaps in stone, will add some beauty in an otherwise stark area. Dont forget about the fact that your yard will also be seen at night. Consider placing some taller lights and lampposts in

various areas. It will add visual interest that doesnt require water and will create some nice ambiance at night. The garden allows us to enjoy all five of our senses and evokes memories that may have all but been forgotten. Feeling the soil reminds me of childhood and digging for earthworms. Each time I catch the aroma of honeysuckle, Im reminded of the fragrance that was in the backyard of my first childhood home. Listening to the trickle of the water in a backyard foundation takes me back to when my brother and I would look for pollywogs in our backyard pond. Tasting produce from a backyard garden gives me as much joy as 6-year-olds reaping their first harvest and seeing the beauty of my yard inspires a peacefulness and contentedness that only Mother Nature can bring.

alm Beach has a new address ... in Lincoln. The Art League of Lincoln has just acquired seven of the signed and numbered serigraphs in the Palm Beach suite by internationally-known artist Thomas McKnight. They are currently featured in the Art Leagues Spotlight Gallery at 580 Sixth St. An anonymous Lincoln art supporter donated the paintings to the

Art League in February. McKnight is well known for his colorful paintings and serigraphs (silkscreens) of tropical interiors, gardens and seascapes from locations throughout the world. Palm Beach, the signed and numbered suite donated to the art league, was done in 1989. The Art Leagues collection has seven of the original eight serigraphs in the complete suite. The donor explained that the eighth work, Grace Trail, was separated

tion, according to Art Center director Jean Cross. The Spotlight Gallery, the current home for the McKnight suite, is a compact, select venue that features rotating art in a variety of mediums. Member artists who have displayed there include painters Margot Comer and Diane Pargament along

with photographer Patrick Jewell. The Art League also hosts larger shows throughout the year in its main gallery. January featured a student show for Lincoln middle school and high school students while February highlighted an encaustic exhibit. February also saw the pro-

locations. The 580 Sixth St. gallery will be devoted to a Gladding, McBean retrospective show of Gladding, McBean photos taken by various photographers over the years plus selected art works provided by Gladding, McBean. At the same time, juried ceramic art will be displayed at the Blue Line Gallery in Roseville, while a student show will be staged at Sierra College. Exhibits scheduled for the rest of 2014 are displayed on the Art Leagues website at all4art.net.

Allergy season is upon us and our pets

Its that time of year again. Sniffle here. Sneeze there. Runny eyes and nose. Just when you think you are coming down with a cold, it dawns on you that it is allergy season! Allergy season in the Sacramento Valley is intense with all the blooming trees, grasses and shrubs. Local veterinarians know it is the start of allergy season when the appointment schedule is full of pets that are shaking their heads, chewing their feet or showing up with little sores on their bodies. They can have any one of these symptoms or any combination of the above. Less commonly, they can also have runny eyes

A holistic approach is imperative to achieve the best results. To successfully manage an allergy pet, specific diet recommendations, monthly topical flea product application and appropriate medications are necessary. ics will help owners with appropriate choices and monitor the pets overall response to the food change.

When changing your pets food to help alleviate allergies, its best to do a trial diet of at least four weeks to help determine which food is most effective.

This varies with each pet. There are many more limited antigen diets on the market these days, making it easier to use a commercial product. A trial diet of a minimum of four weeks is the best way to determine which food is most effective for your pet. Most veterinary clin-

Flea products:
An allergic pet cannot afford to get bitten by fleas. Truly, one or two flea bites can cause a cascade of reactions within the pets body that result in all the classic symptoms mentioned above. The allergic reaction occurs when the pet is exposed to the saliva of the flea. The goal of regular

long as food issues are addressed and topical flea products are regularly used. Other pets may need antihistamines, corticosteroids or combinations during high season. Seriously-allergic pets may need to be on year-round immune-system modifying drugs that keep symptoms at bay. All these are tailored to your pets needs, based on response to therapy. Allergy season does not have to be miserable for man or beast. So much more is known about the mechanics of allergies. Have a conversation with your veterinarian. Develop a good working relationship as a team. Your pet will thank you.

Chamber has a new executive director

ur search committee has been hard at work soliciting and reviewing applications and candidates to be our new executive director. We are pleased that over 40 applications were submitted and six candidates were selected for interviews. Mark Luster remarked to me that he was involved in three other chamber searches over the past 18 months and this was the strongest group of candidates he ever saw. Similar comments came from our search committee. Im pleased to announce that we have hired Cindy Eveler as executive director of the Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce, effective March 31. We are excited that she has accepted this position and feel confident in the leadership of our organization going forward for many years. We are delighted to
