Former Prime Minister and Fiji Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry has been found guilty of all three charges by the High Court in Suva and convicted accordingly. While making his ruling Judge Justice Paul Madigan told Chaudhry "I find beyond reasonable doubt that you are in breach of the terms of Section 4, Section 3 and Section 26 of the Exchange Control Act, and I find you guilty of each count in the information. You are convicted on each accordingly." He said the officers have managed to achieve six out of the eight Key Performance Indicators which is a decrease of two from the last quarter of where they had managed to achieve all KPIs. Mr Parmar said there was still room for more investment in the town which should be something younger businessmen should consider. "When we started out business in Ba we faced a lot of challenges but we saw that production slowly increased and we started making progress. The Meenoos outlets started in Ba and now they are present in all major parts of Fiji. We are proud to be a part of Ba's business scene."

Auckland Man Jailed For Valentine's Day Stabbing

An Auckland man who stabbed his wife with a 30cm chef's knife 4 when she refused sex on Valentine's Day has been sentenced to six years and nine months in prison. Kumar Anal Kamal, 44 and from Fiji, appeared in Auckland High Court after earlier pleading guilty to one charge of attempted murder. He was arrested in February last year shortly after stabbing his wife four times in the arm, head, abdomen and chest, two days after Valentine's Day. He became suspicious she was seeing someone else when she turned down sex on Valentine's Day. Kamal spent two days thinking of ways to kill his wife, including strangulation and chopping into her neck, Justice Murray Gilbert said. When she returned home from work with her 20-year-old daughter on February 16, 2013, he was waiting for her. He confronted her about his suspicions that she was having an affair, provoking an argument in which he threatened to kill her. He then picked up a 30cm chef's knife from the kitchen, grabbed her by the hair and dragged her into the bedroom, where he made her sit on the bed. When she swore at him, he "became even more aggravated", and stabbed her four times, injuring her arm, abdomen, chest and head. For the first time in Fijis history and three Constitutions later, visually impaired persons will get to know about the supreme law of the country firsthand. This new development comes as the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama launched the first ever Braille version of the 2013 Fiji Constitution. For Anaseini Vakaidia, who works at the United Blind Persons of Fiji and has vision in only one eye, this initiative will ensure that persons with vision impairment will not be left out. We wont be left out anymore, we can now access the supreme law like any other person so it is a good initiative, she said after the launching at the Fiji School for the Blind. On the issue of accessibility, Ms Vakaidia said they had made submissions when the consultations were carried out and were happy to see most of them had been taken on board. On the whole, we can say with initiatives like this, Fiji is becoming an

inclusive society but it will take time and we cant expect things to happen overnight, she said. Ms Vakaidia said people with visual impairment can now read the Constitution by themselves rather than depending on second hand information. The Head of Enforcement for the Fiji Intellectual Property Office, Mr Terrence ONeill-Joyce said the Braille work was carried out in New Zealand with the electronic version available if more copies were required. He said there was a set, which includes the English and i-Taukei version, for each division. This (the Braille Constitution) shows that it can be done and I am sure it would prompt a lot of people into converting important documents into Braille. There are around 8000 visually impaired persons in Fiji which constitutes to one per cent of the population. The Hindi Braille version is currently being prepared in India.

61 rural and remote schools in Fiji will be given infrastructure and academic support by the Access to Quality Education Program in partnership with the Ministry of Education. Access to Quality Education Programme Team Leader Dr. Priscilla Puamau said the schools will be assisted with two packages which are the Social Protection and Infrastructure. Puamau said the Social protection package for 31 schools will encourage students to have access and quality education through training, mentoring and grant allocation for improving student's attendance and performance at school. She said the infrastructure package for

Permanent Secretary for Education Dr. Brij Lal said this partnership will provide better access to quality education to schools with a smaller roll and the most disadvantaged children in Fiji. The main criterion for the selection of the 61 schools is poverty in urban, rural and very remote locations.

Of the 61 schools, 30 schools are from the Northern Division, 17 are from the Eastern Division, 13 schools from the Western Division and the remaining one school from the Central Division.

Fiji Labour Party Leader, Mahendra Chaudhry cannot contest the September 17th election this year after his conviction however the Elections Office said it will only decide on this matter if Chaudhry files a nomination to contest the election. The 2013 constitution clearly states that a person may be a candidate for election to parliament only if the person has not, at any time during the eight years immediately before being nominated, been convicted of any offence under any law for which the maximum penalty is a term of imprisonment of 12 months or more. The same is stated in the Electoral Decree for candidate eligibility. This means that 72 year old Chaudhry is out of the parliamentary elections for the next eight years as he has been convicted of three counts of breach of the Exchange Control Act. The maximum penalty for the charge is two years imprisonment. When questioned on the matter,

Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem said candidate eligibility will be determined by what is stated in the constitution and the Electoral Decree. Chaudhry can hold the Fiji Labour Party Leader's post for now as the court is yet to decide on his sentence after the conviction. Under the Political Parties Registration Decree, a person is disqualified from being an office holder of a political party if that person has, in the five years preceding the date when he or she applies to become an office holder of the political party, has been convicted of an offence and sentenced to imprisonment for a period of not less than 6 months. Mitigation and sentencing for Chaudhry will take place on the 1st of May. Chaudhry has not made any comments on his plans as yet. Fiji Labour Party President, Lavenia Padarath could not be reached for a comment.

Such an arrangement establishes the complementary role of Trade Pasifika in the context of all the initiatives in the region being directed at the theme "Exporting for Growth It's Everyone's Business". It is likely that development partners will continue to play these roles and more in the future through "aid for trade" initiatives. This would be readily welcomed by all exporters present and prospective in the region. There is definitely more to do in the present areas of operation. There are greater prospects in more advanced and related areas of increased differentiation of products through value adding, and production under various certifications. Taking full advantage of the niche and specialist markets will help position Pacific exporters for the future.

The Electoral Education manual and leaflets, aimed to educate aspiring candidates for the 2014 Elections, are still in its early stages, says lead writer Professor Richard Herr. Herr also an adjunct Professor of Governance and Ethics at the Fiji National University said that this was partly due to the recent release of the Electoral Decree. Care needs to taken with integrating this decree with other relevant decrees as well as with the constitution to make for a comprehensive manual, he said. The FNU he further says has carriage of the project and they were ultimately responsible for the translation into Taukei and Hindi. It is very much the intention of the

project to ensure that the manual will be accessible to all to read in nontechnical terms, in whichever language it is printed. Naturally to serve its purpose, the manual will have to be available well before the election period begins and I personally anticipate many sleepless nights to meet this "deadline." Herr also clarified the manual was not for the general education of voters, but rather a candidate manual for the purpose of informing candidates on the electoral process and the laws and rules that govern campaigning. The concept was a recommendation of electoral observers after the 2006 elections. A candidates manual or handbook is a standard form of politically neutral

assistance to all candidates in most democratic states to enable candidates and those working with them to be fully briefed on the electoral process and on compliance requirements that may apply to them in the course of an election, Herr said. The document is expected to provide information on the basics of civic education, the electoral framework that includes Fijis electoral calendar, electoral laws and other regulations and guidelines. It will be distributed through workshops and short courses across Fiji in support of ethical and legally compliant of electoral campaigning. The FNU also hopes to impart the messages to the public, voters and students.

Fiji's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Peter Thomson, and Ambassador-at-Large Major General Ioane Naivalurua completed a two-day visit to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in Golan. The visit included meetings with UNDOF officials and the Fiji contingent serving with the UNDOF. UNDOF has existed since May 31, 1974 when Israel and Syria signed a Disengagement Agreement following the ceasefire between Syria and Israel after the 1973 war. UNDOF was established by the UN Security Council, providing for an Area of Separation and two equal zones of limited forces and armaments on both sides of the ceasefire line. At a strength of 514 military personnel of the First Battalion of RFMF, the Fiji contingent is now the largest serving in UNDOF. It was deployed from Fiji in June-July 2013. Other contingents serving in the 1257-strength force of UNDOF are from the Philippines, India, Nepal and Ireland. Fiji replaced the Austrian, Croatian and Japanese contingents who withdrew from UNDOF in 2013. The Fijian Ambassadors were welcomed and farewelled by Fiji's UNDOF contingent under the command of Lt Col Sitiveni Qiliho. They met

with the officers and personnel to hear of their experience and register any points of concern. These were noted for further action in Suva and New York. The Ambassadors were pleased to observe that the contingent's esprit de corps and morale were high, that the personnel were in good health, and that all concerned were proud of the solid contribution provided by Fiji to UNDOF. Lt Col Qiliho and UNDOF officers escorted the Fijian Ambassadors to observation posts along the Alpha line of the Area of Separation to overview the northern zone of the area of responsibility covered by Fiji. They were able to inspect facilities in the observation posts and assess the operating conditions of the Fiji contingent. At UNDOF's Camp Ziouani, the Ambassadors received a mission operational brief, including details of the current security situation in Golan. The brief was delivered by Major Maika Baleinaloto in his capacity as UNDOF's Senior Staff Officer Operations. The UNDOF Force Commander, Lieutenant General Iqbal Singha, attended the briefing and held separate talks with the Ambassadors in which he expressed his satisfaction with the high caliber of the Fiji contingent's contribution to UNDOF.

A Sick Family's Struggle

His ailment has not deterred him from 8 financially supporting his sick mother. And even when he earns just $2 a day selling peas, Ronit Krishneel Dutt sacrifices his bus fare and uses that to buy vegetables for dinner. The 17-year-old walks around Labasa Town every day selling peas and sweets. Raised by a single mother, Ronit knows about the struggles mum Gita Devi endured to send him to school and put food on the table. "But now she is sickly and most of the time, when she has her arthritis, she can't walk properly or even sit up," he said. "So, I have to sell the peas she makes to get money for us. After selling the sweets in town, I buy some food and other things we need at home. "There are times when I can only earn $2, so I use all that money to buy vegetables for our dinner." Ronit dropped out of school last year because he couldn't cope with academic work. When he was 15, he attended Class 1 at Bethel Primary School but his mum could not afford to pay the fees, so she enrolled him in another school. Ms Devi said at Labasa Muslim Primary School, Ronit enjoyed the environment and was doing well in school. 8 "But because he was 16 years old, the teachers thought of putting him in Class Eight. When that happened, he 8 lost interest in school," she said. "He told me the work was too difficult for him to understand, so he quit. "My son has supported us and looked after us very well. If he has no bus fare, he walks to town to sell the peas and doesn't complain. "I am blessed to have him." Ms Devi is pleading with the public for assistance in any form. A former Fiji man who stabbed his wife to death in Sydney has been sentenced to a minimum of 14 years in jail. News reports that 48 year old Nacanieli Lutu pleaded guilty to murdering 46 year old Salaseini Batirau at their Macquarie Fields home in Sydney's west on January 20th last year. In sentencing Lutu, Justice Stephen Campbell said the couple's history of domestic violence and tension over Lutu's recent redundancy all contributed to Batirau's death. But the judge did not believe the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that the murder was premeditated and deserved a more severe sentence. The court heard that before her death, the victim had reported her husband to police for hitting her. Lutu was sentenced to a maximum of 18 years and nine months. FIJI'S first casino should be ready within the next two years. According to the developer of the casino, the project will add a new dimension to tourism in the country. One Hundred Sands Limited chairman Larry Claunch told Radio New Zealand that despite the delays it would be worth the wait. After a number of false starts construction is in progress. construction on Denarau Island was expected to start in 2012. After two years of waiting, construction has now started and Mr Claunch said it would take 18 to 24 months for the construction of the casino, convention centre and the bulk of the resort rooms. "We're building out quite a number of resort rooms because we really feel like we'll attract a new type of tourist; of course, the project works on its own with the existing tourist base but I do believe that we'll change that tourist landscape just a little bit," he said.

Fijis Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has called on the public not to vote for "liars" in the upcoming general elections on September 17. He made the comments while opening a new nursing station at Yakete in Ba during which he told the people that liars were spreading untruths about what is in the 2013 Constitution regarding iTaukei land. If anyone tells you that your land is threatened in any way, do not believe them. They are trying to stir up trouble for their own political ends. They are trying to instill fear in you. They are lying, Bainimarama said. He maintained there was no threat to iTaukei land or to its ownership and that his government has strengthened the protection of these lands. In the past, some unscrupulous politicians used a loophole in the law to sell off portions of iTaukei land. They got around the ban on native title being converted to freehold with a fancy legal sidestep. What they did was to first convert native title into Crown land, which the law allowed. Then they converted that same piece of land from Crown to freehold, which the law also allowed. The result was that some very valuable native title iTaukei land was sold off and lost forever. So the truth is that more land is now protected than ever before because we ended this practice. But dont take my

word for it. Read it for yourself in our Constitution the first Constitution in Fijis history ever to be translated into iTaukei. Its all there in black and white in the Bill of Rights an absolute guarantee of the protection of ITaukei land for you, your children and the generations to come. He told villagers their land was not going to be lost forever and that landowners will benefit greatly. And there are other benefits to landowners that have never existed before, such as the right to a fair share of royalties for any minerals found under their land or under the seabed in waters where they have customary fishing rights. Also, for the first time in any of our constitutions, the Bill of Rights says that any land leased by landowners must provide them with a fair and equitable return. So there it is the truth as outlined in our constitution. It is the Supreme Law of our country and the law from which all other laws flow. And it gives landowners a fairer deal than they have ever received before. He said whoever said otherwise was a liar. There is no threat to iTaukei land and anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar. And I ask you not to vote for liars when it comes to the election, for your sake and the sake of our beloved nation.

ABOUT 50 Naitasiri yaqona farmers want easy access to their farms to better facilitate their access to the market. Yaqona farming is the main source of income for farmers of Nadaravakawalu district of Saumakia Village in Naitasiri. District rep Ratu Meli Draumasi says they walk two miles from the village to their farms every day to do their business. According to him, the soil is very fertile at the farms compared with the land near their village. For Ratu Meli, he has been harvesting yaqona from the same land for more than 20 years and he wants a change. The farmers have secure good deals in markets around Fiji but accessing their farms is their main challenge. "We are about to harvest about 600kg of yaqona and are ready to deliver it to the market in Vanua Levu because of the good market price," he said. Ratu Meli said with an estimation of

Care For Beggars

FOLLOWING the announcement of a home to be built for beggars at Coloi-Suva, reassurances have been given that beggars with mental health issues will be seen to, as the home is likely to have specialists ready to assist. This was explained by the district superintendent of the Church of Nazarene (where the home set to be built), Reverend Kafoa Muaror, who said it was not unusual for beggars to experience mental health problems. "The church will work closely with the government ministry for the purpose of securing specialised consultants (as and when deemed necessary) to diagnose and provide proper medical advice on such symptoms," Mr Kafoa told the media. "The church has also secured the services of certain specialised doctors on a volunteer basis to assist as and when required." He said the church, together with the Social Welfare Ministry, would consider each case based on its facts and merits then strive to provide the best possible support available they could afford. "If a particular case is deemed very serious in nature and we don't have the people trained and or capable of dealing with such cases meaningfully, we will make the appropriate recommendations to the ministry for an alternative safe home or institution that can adequately deal with such special mental needs. "We have a project manager and two other staff that will live on the site and attend to the day- to-day issues and routines. "In addition to providing for the physical needs of the beggars, the church will also be seriously engaged in prayer for healing and restoration."

$30 per kg in Vanua Levu, a farmer could get about $18,000 if he harvests 600kg. "This is our main source of income and we have been requesting the Ministry of Agriculture to support us on this." Agriculture Ministry deputy secretary Uraia Waibuta said the rural road budget was being handled by the Fiji Roads Authority; initially it was done under the Commissioner Central's office. To access the funds from FRA, Mr Waibuta said applications for rural roads, including agricultural farm roads, need to go through the ministry and the office of the Commissioner Central for approval. He said the ministry only provided paperwork for the building of new agricultural farm roads. With the government's 2014 budget allocation of increased funding of $474.1million for roads, the Finance Ministry recorded $15m for the upgrading of rural roads.

Fiji Police Force Acting Commissioner Ravi Narayan has confirmed and welcomed the offer of assistance from the British High Commission ahead of the 2014 Elections in September. This comes as a result of a meeting in Suva between the acting commissioner and the British High Commissioner to Fiji, Roderick Drummond. We talked about possible assistance they could render us as we prepare towards the election, ACP Narayan said. We are working out the areas which we would require their help in. The British High Commission will also assist us in training officers in general. The force had also considered recruiting special constables for the election

While we continue to prepare for elections, I urge each and every one of you to familiarise yourselves with the Electoral Decree and understand your role. This will be testing times for us as law enforcers so dont give anyone any opportunity to take advantage of the uniform youre wearing all because you are unaware of what is required of you under the law, he said. Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama will reveal his assets, income and liabilities within the next few weeks as he gets ready to register the proposed Fiji First Party. While calls have been made for the salaries of the Prime Minister and all the ministers to be made public, Bainimarama has maintained that he will make the declaration when he applies for the registration of the party. While speaking in Sigatoka to people who turned up in numbers to support the proposed Fiji First, Bainimarama said he will follow the law and declare his assets, income and liabilities soon. He said that some people have been spreading rumours that he has $1.2 million in his bank account. He stressed to people that these are just rumours and are not true. Rise In VAT Refunds Value-added tax refund issued by the Despite this, he said,
Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority for the first quarter of this year totaled $87.1million. And according to FRCA CEO Jitoko Tikolevu, this was an increase of 35.1 per cent when compared with the same period last year. "This is more than double the average growth rate of 15.9 per cent seen in the same period over the last 10 years," he said. "In the period of rapid VAT collections, it is anticipated that the amount of VAT refund will be higher and a total of $300m has been budgeted for 2014, which is 13 per cent higher than the 2013 level." Mr Tikolevu said outstanding VAT refunds were about $57.9m, which was slightly lower than the December records last year.

there was continuous emphasis for FRCA to reduce that amount. "The level of tax arrears currently stands at $51.9m, which is an improvement of 14.8 per cent over the December 2013 level," he said. "We thank our taxpayers for continuing to be compliant. "For those that are still dodging the system, we remind you that paying taxes is your civic duty." FRCA collected more than $171.39m from VAT, and surpassed its first quarter forecast of $161.42m. In terms of Customs duties for the same period, FRCA collected more than $98.11m, slightly less than its forecast of $102.14m. The taxman also collected $75.15m from other taxes, surpassing its forecast of $53.58m for the first quarter of this year.

Disbarred lawyer and Fiji Football Association president Dr Muhammad Shamsud-Dean Sahu Khan has been allowed to act as a criminal barrister in New Zealand. Dr Sahu Khan was disbarred from practicing law for 10 years after he was found guilty of professional misconduct by the Independent Legal Service Commission. His appeal against the decision was dismissed by the Fiji Court of Appeal in Suva last year. He had failed to comply with a Deed of Indemnity and Guarantee which he executed with his client Sashi Kiran in 2006. Because of his ban from practising, the New Zealand Law Society would

Visitor arrivals in 2013 dropped by 0.4 per cent compared to 2012, according to figures released by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics. And Australians remain the highest visitors into Fiji, made up 51.7 per cent of total arrivals in 2013 up from 51.1 per cent in 2012. The number of visitors from New Zealand also increased to 16.5 per cent in 2013 from 16.1 per cent in 2012. Australia [340,151], New Zealand [108,239], the United States of America

But after an appeal against that decision, the Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal ruled he could act as a criminal barrister in New Zealand. However he would not be able to apply for a solicitor's certificate. He can represent criminal clients in court, but cannot act in areas such as property disputes. "I'm very pleased with the decision and I'd like to thank my counsel Richard Pidgeon for the wonderful performance and preparation he did. Now, of course, I'm looking forward to practising as a barrister in New Zealand," he told New Zealand Herald. Dr Sahu Khan will be based in south Auckland.

Canada, United Kingdom, Continental Europe and Japan remained stagnant in their percentage of tourists visiting the country from 2012-2013 whereas USA, China, South Korea and Rest of Asia, dropped in their visitor numbers coming into Fiji.

UK Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire has welcomed progress Fiji has made towards the September 17 elections. In a statement, he describes recent announcements by the Fijian Government including the publication of the Electoral Decree and the announcement of a date for the election in Fiji, as "concrete steps towards the restoration of democracy." "I note the appointment of an Electoral Supervisor and hope that he, working closely with the independent Electoral

Commission, can help to ensure a transparent and inclusive election process," Swire said. He also encouraged the Fijian Government to consider independent international observers which "will be crucial in determining the overall credibility of the election process." "I note that Australia has been asked to take a lead in establishing an election observation mission. We welcome this and look forward to supporting them in any way we can."

THE region will be a haven for criminals, drug and human traffickers and money laundering if Customs organisations did not work together. And if those organisations lagged behind in their responsibilities and roles, the Pacific region would be a dumping ground for contraband goods. This was the message by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation permanent secretary Amena Yauvoli at the opening of the 16th Oceania Customs Organisation (OCO) conference in Suva. "The price of these criminal activities on our people, our societies, our governments, and our economies would be unimaginable," Mr Yauvoli said. He said this was a challenge for Customs in the region. "I urge all members of the OCO to continue to work together through partnerships in communicating and

sharing information," he said. MrYauvoli said Customs administrations were facing new challenges and were responsible for ensuring the smooth flow of trade while applying the necessary controls, guaranteeing and protecting the health of the people and communities in the region. "Customs are at the frontline in the fight against fraud, terrorism and organised crime. To achieve a correct balance between these demands, control methods must be modernised and the co-operation between the different services reinforced," he said. Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority CEO Jitoko Tikolevu said the cost was millions of dollars. "The cost is huge. We are talking about a small case of drugs and a kilogram is already a million dollars," Mr Tikolevu said. Fiji last hosted the conference eight years ago.

Withdraw Constitution Booklet, Govt Tells CCF

The Fijian Government will write to the Citizens Constitutional Forum to immediately withdraw one of its booklets which it says contained anomalies in fact a couple of lies on whats in the constitution and whats not in the constitution. Attorney General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum says the booklet, titled, "Citizens' Constitutional Forum 2013 Fiji Government Constitution booklet" contained additions and omissions that appeared to be deliberately done to misinform the public. We will of course be writing to them asking them to withdraw this booklet whether its in the vernacular version or English version," he said. We will also write to their donors tell them that this is precisely what this organisation is doing. It is factually incorrect. Its very worrying because we understand activities such as this are being funded of course by foreign entities, government etc but more to the point that CCF supposedly an independent impartial NGO or member of the civil society is here telling lies to the public of Fiji. "Unfortunately this is the type of environment we thought politician would be stirring up but it appears the NGOs are doing it also. It is of a great concern. This is the very same people who go up to various organization, international and locally portray themselves as independent when they are not." Sayed-Khaiyum says the government will await the NGO's response to the request before deciding further action to be taken. He highlighted one of the sections included in the 45-page booklet, pertaining to the acquisition of property including lands in which the booklet stated the acquisition of property and/or land by the state but did not mention that the state will return the land/property to the owners when it no longer has any use for it. Page 25 of this booklet, entire page talks about whether there is freedom from compulsory arbitrary acquisition of property but more so it talks about the rights and protection of the itaukei, Rotuman and Banaban lands. It talks about protection and ownership of interest on land interesting enough; in this particular section three times it mentioned however a written law may authorize compulsory acquisition of property when necessary for the public purposes and on the basis that the owner is promptly paid the agreed compensation. Compulsory acquisition has always been part of Fiji constitution- section 9 of the 1990 constitution had compulsory acquisition, section 40, sub section two of the 1997 constitution had compulsory acquisition and that is for public purposes. This has been the case, however the manner in which CCF has put it seems to have indicate to landowners whether you are a customary owners or the freehold title owners that the state at anytime could come in anytime to buy this land and take it away from you. What is more damaging about this page is that the CCF fails to mention the new provision in the 2013 new constitution that if the state no longer requires the land for public purposes that it must therefore give back that land. That is the first time such a provision has been included in any constitution. It is in our constitution and the CCF has failed to mention that. Anybody reading this would think that Government could come at anytime and buy the land pay compensation and take away the land. There is a provision in the constitution that land no longer required for public purposes must be given back to the land owners and the CCF has deliberately not mention or refer to that section at all. It is trying to create disquiet amongst landowners and this is a deliberate attempt." The AG also highlighted the booklet's interpretation of the Bill of Rights in which it says the protection of which was weak because "the parliament has the power to restrict these rights and freedoms." The booklet further says that the "parliament may limit of restrict all of the following rights by enacting a law it deems "necessary" further going on to state an example that "even though the Constitution provides freedom of speech for its citizens, the Parliament may pass a law stating that anyone that protests in front of the courthouse will be arrested, therefore restricting a citizens' freedom of speech by way of protest'. "That is not true," says the AG. The booklet also contains factual errors in which it stated the abrogation of the 1997 Constitution was done in 2006, when it happened in 2009. It talks about the leader of opposition having now diminished power and that the PM and the AG have powers over the judicial branch including the Judicial Services Commission. It also made reference to the immunity provision where it stated that persons entitled to the immunity provision have broad unqualified immunity which the AG says implies that persons that qualify for immunity can get away with offences outlined in the Crimes Decree. "This is not the case. There are limitations. The AG says the CCF are telling untruths and spreading lies to the grassroots under the banner of a supposedly civil society organisations describing it as a "great travesty not only of justice but great travesty of what this booklet is doing and what this organization is doing being funded by foreign government." The government acquired a copy of the booklet when it convened a meeting with the NGO coalition on Tuesday. In the course of the discussion, which actually was very good, CCF gave to this office the handbook which is apparently a booklet CCF is taking around throughout Fiji at the grass root level even translated into vernaculars and according to them is simply a information booklet in very plain English language as to what is contained in the constitution. The government is not aware on the number of copies that are in circulation. It is believed that the booklet has been in circulation since late last year.

Lack Of Documents Delay Cancer Trustees Work

Unaccounted expenses and deposits are but some of difficulties faced by the Fiji Cancer Societys interim trustees as they look to wrap up their audit into the societys finances and handover to the elected management. Nazhat Shameem, chairperson of the interim trustees says while they have completed the audit of the societys 2012 accounts, the same cannot be said for the 2013 accounts as documents are missing to justify payments and deposits received into their various bank accounts which she adds is more than the number needed for any NGO. Only last week, they discovered a bank account under the FCS's name which was not covered in a freeze order they had requested the banks. The interim body also discovered that the accounts of the west branch of the FCS had never been audited and documents missing which the trustees are inclined to doubt the existence of the documents. Initially when we asked for all the accounts to be frozen, we wrote to the banks, that all the accounts that are opened in the name of the FCS should be frozen so we get an idea of how much money we have, and with these accounts who the signatories are and what is the level of accountability," Shameem said. The banks were very helpful however right up till last week we discovered new information. We were surprised to discover a new bank account, which had not been subject to any audit in the past nor had we been informed that it was opened in the name of the FCS. Our real concern is that they have not been caught by the freeze. So in all this time while the trustee has been trying to make some order of the financial accounts, that particular account has continued to operate and that is a matter of great concern. Given the new setback, Madame Shameem says they have had to return to the planning stage of the audit. The internal audit has been completed by the trustees to the level that we were able to do it in relation to the limited documents we have. The audit has been handed over to KPMG which is the external auditor and they have completed the 2012 account. They have not been able to complete the 2013 account because of the lack of documents. In the meantime, the society continues to attend to cancer patients, two in a day which Madame Shameem says indicates that people still have faith in the society underlining the need to complete the audit as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the interim board of trustees has completed a draft constitution for the society. They are also doing up a draft code of conduct aimed to set out clearly the relationship between the staff and people in leadership positions "to ensure there are no governance issues in the future and ensure a very clear line of communication between these different bodies." In the code of conduct, the trustee is also looking to include a policy on overseas donors, outlining their responsibility and relationship with the society. She also confirmed they have not been able to find any proof about the involvement of political parties in the mismanagement of the society's finances.

Chinese Ming-Era 'Chicken Cup' Sells For Record $38.5 Million

9-Month-Old Pakistani Boy Accused Of Attempted Murder

A 9-month-old Pakistani boy has been swept up in an attempted murder investigation that highlights the country's dysfunctional criminal justice system where even children are not immune from questionable legal decisions. The toddler was brought to court last Friday as part of an investigation relating to an incident where residents in his neighbourhood clashed with police. He was granted bail by a judge. The incident began in late January and touches on many of the challenges Pakistan faces such as electricity shortages and faulty police investigations. Police and energy officials went to the neighbourhood on Jan. 31 to disconnect customers who they said were stealing electricity and gas. Such pilferage is common in Pakistan, and attempts to disconnect customers are sometimes met with violence. Police said they were pelted with stones by angry residents, while the toddler's grandfather says some neighbourhood women attacked the police with batons. That altercation sparked police to open an attempted murder investigation into 30 people in the neighbourhood, including the father of the toddler and his unnamed son, said police officer Atif Zulfiqar, who is in charge of the area. The grandfather, Malik Muhammed Yaseen, said the police came to the house multiple times looking for the son, and when they were told that he was less than a year old they told the family to take him to the court to get bail. A lawyer for the family, Irfan Tarar, said police appeared to have no idea that the son was so young. He said after the boy was brought to the court on April 3 to get bail, the family spirited him away to the city of Faisalabad to protect him. The lawyer said the police "blindly" registered the attempted murder case against a baby and said the entire episode was really related to a property dispute between the landlord and the tenants, which included the baby's family. But Zulfiqar from the police contends the family isn't being truthful. He said the police hadn't deliberately targeted the infant but were looking for a more grown-up son that they believe the family is still protecting. He said the family produced the infant as a way to deflect attention. The grandfather denied this. Wherever the truth lies, legal analysts say the case shows the deficiencies in a Pakistani criminal justice system where police often lack investigation skills and the legal system can be abused for personal gain. Legal expert Babar Awan said the judge should have thrown out the case against the baby the day he was produced in court and faulted the police for a shoddy investigation. "There is also a flaw in the legal system, and it needs to be reformed," he said. The next hearing the case is April 12 although the family's lawyer says they have been told by the police that they are dropping any investigation of the infant.

Smart Cars Overturned In California Crime Spree

Authorities in San Francisco are investigating the vandalism of four diminutive Smart cars found turned over on their sides on Monday. The four vehicles had body damage and broken windows, a police spokesman said. Seven suspects wearing hooded sweatshirts were reported in the area. Other instances of vandalism of the small cars have been reported in Canada and the Netherlands, where at least one vehicle was dumped into a canal. California authorities are looking into whether the latest incidents on Monday morning were an act of vandalism or a campaign against the small vehicles, which weigh less than 2,000lbs (907kg), the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

India Begins World's Biggest Election In Remote Northeast

Male Stripper Goes To Nursing Home, Elderly Resident's Son Goes To Court
Somebody at a New York nursing home apparently thought it would be a great idea to bring in a young hard body for the elderly residents to watch dance. In other words, a male stripper. But after a man found a picture in his 86-year-old mother's belongings of a man wearing only "tighty whiteys" hovering very much in his mom's personal space, the lawyers got involved. Bernice Youngblood, the wheelchairbound resident whose son, Franklin, is suing the home on her behalf, told CNN affiliate WCBS, "I felt terrible. I was shaken and going on." WCBS reported that the East Neck Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in West Babylon said all 16 people on a panel of residents approved the show. "There is nothing inappropriate about it," the facility's attorney, Howard Fensterman, told reporters on Tuesday. Fensterman, according to the WCBS report, said that Bernice Youngblood enjoyed the event and was chaperoned by her son's live-in girlfriend, who the nursing home said appears in the photo. The family said the woman in the photo is a nursing-home staff member. According to a lawsuit filed last month, Bernice Youngblood, who the suit says has partial dementia, was "confused and bewildered" when the stripper approached her and directed her to "place her hands about and upon his body, including his genital area." The suit contends the home has hired male strippers on other occasions for the "perverse pleasure of the defendant's staff." Franklin Youngblood said his mother was forced to tip the stripper with her own money, which is supposed to be locked away at the nurses' station. "There's too much sex and craziness that's going on. Now they're bringing it to the nursing home, and it don't belong here," he told WCBS. The suit is asking for a financial judgment of unspecified amounts from a jury at trial. It is unclear from the legal documents when the stripping incident occurred.

The first Indians cast their votes on Monday in the world's biggest election. Some 815 million people are registered to vote over the next five weeks. The election is beginning in two small states near Myanmar and will end in the densely-populated northern plains. Results are due on May 16. "We need a change, someone who will come and change the whole scenario," said voter Ashim Sarkar. Hindu nationalist opposition candidate Narendra Modi is favourite to win but is likely to fall short of a majority. Mr Modi has been promising to jumpstart a flagging economy and sweep out the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty that has ruled India for most of the period since independence in 1947. "The proposals in the manifesto have the power to lift the nation from the ditch that it has fallen into, it has the power to give momentum to a nation that has stalled," Mr Modi said at the New Delhi launch of his party's manifesto. Turnout in the five constituencies in the

state of Assam that went to the polls on Monday was 75 per cent. Voting ended at 5pm and was peaceful, the chief election officer for the state said. But police say an explosion in Bihar state killed two policemen. Police say they suspect Maoists are to blame, but there's been no claim of responsibility. It's thought the bomb may have been a scare tactic by the Maoists ahead of the polling in Bihar which is staggered over six phases starting Thursday. Surveys suggest a resounding defeat awaits the ruling Congress party in India led by Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul, after the longest economic slowdown since the 1980s. India's remote northeast, a border region of eight states home to 27 million voters, is a test case for the appeal of Modi's promises to fill India with new highways and fast trains, and to take a tough line on border disputes with neighbours.

New York Train Crash Driver Had Sleep Disorder

The driver of a New York commuter train that derailed in December, killing four, had a serious sleep disorder, investigators have revealed. William Rockefeller was found to have "severe obstructive sleep apnoea" in a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report released on Monday. Officials have not said whether the condition contributed to the crash. The Metro-North train was travelling at nearly three times the speed limit on a bend when it jumped the tracks. Mr Rockefeller was determined to suffer from the medical condition - in which breathing is briefly, repeatedly interrupted during sleep - during a sleep evaluation following the accident. More than 18 million American adults experience sleep apnoea, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Mr Rockefeller's lawyer and union leader have previously suggested the engineer fell asleep as the train entered a sharp curve before derailing. The NTSB has said it will release its determination of the cause of the accident in a later report. The train - heading to New York City's Grand Central station from Poughkeepsie, New York - was said to be travelling at 82mph (132 km/h) on a 30mph curve. More than 60 people were injured as it derailed and came to a stop a short distance from the Harlem River in New York's Bronx borough. Mumbai Gang Rape: Death Sentences For India Rapists

A court in India has sentenced three men to hang, under a new law which carries the death penalty for those convicted of multiple sexual assaults. The men were convicted of raping a photojournalist in Mumbai last year. But they were also among five men sentenced to life last month for raping another woman in a separate incident in the city. The trio is the first to be tried and convicted under the tough new law aimed at repeat sexual offenders. The sentences was announced at a court in Mumbai where Judge Shalini Phansalkar Joshi said: "There needs to be zero tolerance for such incidents," the news agency reported. "A loud and clear message needs to be sent to society," she added. Both the victims - an 18-yearold telephone operator and the photojournalist - were attacked last year. Both trials were completed within seven months in a fast-track court. The 22-year-old photojournalist, an

An American student has stabbed or slashed 20 others during a bloody 30-minute rampage in the classrooms and hallways of a high school in Pennsylvania. The incident at the Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, about 80 kilometres east of Pittsburgh, began around 7:10am on Wednesday (local time) - about 10 minutes after the school day started. The assault was over by 7:45am with the suspect taken into custody almost immediately after being cornered by police. It is believed the assistant principal helped stop the attacker. The male teenager, whose age and identity have not been released, had two knives as he chased victims through the hallways. intern with a Mumbai-based magazine, had gone to the Shakti Mills - a former textile mill that now lies abandoned - with a male colleague on a photo assignment when she was attacked. Her colleague was beaten during the assault. After that case made national headlines, the 18-year-old telephone operator came forward to report that she had been assaulted in the same place a month earlier. Scrutiny of sexual violence has grown in India ever since the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old student on a bus in Delhi in December 2012. The case sparked off nationwide protests and forced the Indian authorities to introduce tough new anti-rape laws. Four men were sentenced to death and a juvenile was sent to a correction facility for three years for the Delhi attack. The attack on the Mumbai photojournalist only renewed public outrage.

The Solomon Islands National Disaster Operations Committee has issued an all clear statement in the wake of devastating floods which swept through the capital A total of 23 people died and 9,000 are homeless after devastating floods, landslides and strong winds last week. The statement means that no further flood threat exists, and it is safe for people to move around. The Committee says those whose homes were not damaged or destroyed can return home, while those who have no place to return to should remain in evacuation centres. The statement comes as the chairman of the Solomon Islands National Disaster Council says Honiara needs reconstruction, not rehabilitation, in the wake of deadly flash floods. Permanent secretary Melchoir Mataki says that infrastructure needs to be rebuilt, not just repaired. "At this stage what we need is reconstruction - mere rehabilitation will not work in the long term," he said. "It will be just a band-aid. "What we need is reconstruction of roads and other infrastructure, bridges for example, that need to be done." Honiara and the whole of the island of Guadalcanal have been declared a disaster zone after torrential rain caused massive flooding, loss of life and loss of homes. Mr Mataki says many of those who lost their homes lived on a flood plain, where they were not supposed to build. "So they have naturally increased their risk, the risk of them being flooded," he said. "But I think the issue has been they have not experienced flooding of such magnitude in the past, so they thought, probably, that it is still safe to build

around there. "The government is looking into ways of assisting them to recover from the disaster they have faced, but we certainly have a lot of constraints in terms of resources and capability." Disease fears Fears are also growing of an outbreak of disease, with infrastructures damage, including the sewerage system and water supplies, badly damaged or destroyed. The National Disaster Management Office says dysentery, malaria, dengue fever and other diseases related to poor sanitation are all a real risk. Solomon Islands head of the Save The Children Fund Graham Kenna says the flooding will increase the damage from diseases already spreading through the country. "There is a desperation to get these people away from the evacuation centres and get them settled somewhere which is more permanent for them," he said. "Two days ago there was the start of diarrheal disease and... conjunctivitis. "Prior to the flooding there was the start of a dengue fever outbreak, which we know is going to be a lot worse once the place starts to dry out." Mr Mataki says 60 per cent of Honiara is still without access to clean water, and there are major concerns in Guadalcanal as well. "A lot of the water sources would have been inundated with dirty water," he said. "So our concern here is not just with water, clean water availability in Honiara but also out in the provinces, for which we would definitely need support and assistance to ensure that our people have access to clean, safe, drinking water."

down," one student said. Some of the students were injured in the mayhem as the fire alarms were sounded and the school evacuated. I saw Jared right towards the front of the school where the office is with his shirt up, looking into the office screaming 'Help! Help!' with a stab wound on his stomach bleeding down. Franklin High School student Dan Stevens, a spokesman for Westmoreland County emergency management, said some of those who were injured needed to be airlifted to hospital. "Twenty students were injured, four of those students were flown from the scene," Mr Stevens said. He said the victims, most of them aged 14 to 17, were slashed and stabbed in "numerous classrooms and hallways" of the high school. The trauma medical director at Forbes Regional Hospital, Chris Kaufmann, says there "are significant injuries". "We had two patients who went

immediately to the operating room," he told CNN. Seven teenagers and one adult were being treated at the hospital. The school was evacuated after the attack. A statement on the website of the Franklin Regional School District said a "critical incident has occurred at the high school". "All elementary schools were cancelled, the middle school and

high school students are secure," the statement said. The attack comes after a long and frequent line of US school shootings that have inflamed a nationwide debate over gun control in the United States. But even the December 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 young children and six adults were shot dead, ultimately failed to tighten gun ownership rules.

a small bowl and set aside. In another small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water thickener and set aside. Wash and drain the broccoli. Cut the stalk diagonally into thin slices. Cut the flowerets into 3 or 4 pieces. Crush the garlic. 3. Preheat a wok. Heat 2 cups oil in the wok until it reaches 275 degrees Fahrenheit. (Test the heat by placing a piece of chicken in the wok - it should float). Add the chicken cubes, and let cook until they just turn white (about 30 seconds), using a wooden spoon or chopsticks to gently separate them. Quickly remove the chicken cubes from the wok as soon as they turn white, and drain in a colander or on paper towels. 4. Drain the oil out of the wok or preheat a second wok on medium high to high heat. Add 2 tablespoons oil. When the oil is hot, add the crushed garlic and stir fry for 10 seconds. 5. Add the broccoli, sprinkle the salt and sugar over, and stir fry briefly, turning down the heat if necessary to make sure it doesn't burn. Add the 1/2 cup water, and cook the broccoli, covered, for 4 - 5 minutes, until it turns a bright green and is tender but still crisp. Remove from the wok and drain. 6. Clean out the wok and heat 2 more tablespoons oil. Add the broccoli and the velveted chicken, stirring and tossing to cook the chicken through. Add the sauce and cornstarch mixture in the middle of the wok and stir quickly to thicken. Mix everything together and serve hot over steamed rice.

Canadas Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander announced that Canadas active recruitment model for economic immigration will officially be called Express Entry. Set to launch in January 2015, Express Entry is a major step forward in the transformation of Canadas immigration system into one that is fast, flexible and focused on meeting Canadas economic and labour needs. Express Entry will allow for greater flexibility and better responsiveness to deal with regional labour shortages, and help fill open jobs for which there are no available Canadian workers. Express Entry candidates who receive a valid job offer or nomination under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) will be quickly invited to apply for permanent residency a key distinction between Express Entry and the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, which is only used to fill temporary labour and skill shortages. Formerly referred to as Expression of Interest, Express Entry will be open to skilled immigrants and allow the government to select the best candidates who are most likely to succeed in Canada, rather than those who happen to be first in line. It will also prevent backlogs and allow Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) to better coordinate application volume with the annual immigration levels plan. Qualified applicants can expect faster processing times of six months or less when invited to come to Canada in four key economic streams: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, Canadian

Experience Class, and a portion of the PNP. With Express Entry, employers will have a key role in selecting economic immigrants and providing advice to the Government of Canada. To this end, Alexander also announced that over the course of spring 2014, CIC will work with provincial and territorial governments to hold a series of crossCanada information sessions to provide employers with more information about this exciting new system. Quick facts Canadas Economic Action Plan 2014 will invest $14 million over two years and $4.7 million per year ongoing to ensuring the successful implementation of Express Entry. With Express Entry, Canada will be able to select the best candidates who are most likely to achieve success in Canada, rather than the first person in line. The Government of Canadas new and improved Job Bank will help facilitate matches between Canadian employers and Express Entry candidates. Having a valid job offer or provincial/ territorial nomination will guarantee Express Entry candidates an invitation to apply for permanent residence. Quote Express Entry promises to be a gamechanger for Canadian immigration and Canadas economy. It will revolutionize the way we attract skilled immigrants, and get them working here faster. Our government is actively engaged with our provincial and territorial partners, and with employers, to make Januarys launch of Express Entry a success. Air Canada is introducing Wi-Fi access to dozens of its aircraft beginning in May, with the aim of making wireless internet available on 130 of its narrowbodied, North American aircraft by the end of 2015. Email, internet and mobile device apps will be made available on 29 aircraft this year, Air Canada announced Tuesday, making it the second Canadian airline to recently announce Wi-Fi services on flights. Calgary-based WestJet Airlines said in February it will start offering wireless aboard by the end of 2014. Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick said its service will be comparable to mobile broadband available on the ground. Prices not finalized Fitzpatrick said the price hasn't been worked out yet, but could include packages that involve buying access for a certain number of weeks or flights, or as a bundle available in the

Four days after Jagtar Gill was found stabbed to death in her Barrhaven home, Gurpreet Ronald commented on a Citizen article about the gruesome slaying, offering her condolences to a grieving family. My prayers and my thoughts are with the Gill family, the beautiful 34-yearold mother of two young daughters wrote on Facebook, where she uses her maiden name, Brar. On Wednesday, Ronald appeared in an Ottawa court, charged with first-degree murder in the same Jan. 29 slaying. Ronald and the victims widower, Bhupinderpal Gill, are both OC Transpo bus drivers. The killing, which is alleged to have occurred on the day of the Gills 17th wedding anniversary, while Bhupinderpal Gill and his teenage daughter were out getting gifts for Jagtar, has raised rampant allegations in the Sikh community that the coworkers were linked romantically. Its an accusation that Bhupinderpal Gill has denied, family members told the Citizen. Right now, at least we know who

Chuang Li, Former Employee, Charged In Toronto Office Stabbings

Three victims remain in hospital after rampage at human resources company Charges have been laid against a Mississauga man accused of stabbing his former co-workers in a north Toronto office building. Chuang (Ray) Li, 47, faces charges including three counts of attempted murder and four counts of aggravated assault. The attack happened just after 9:30 a.m. ET, Wednesday, on the fifth floor of an office complex at 4110 Yonge St., near York Mills Avenue. Three men and one woman employees of a human resources company were sent to hospital with injuries following the attack. Three were still there by early evening. The woman has life-threatening injuries, two of the men have less serious injuries, police said. Initial reports indicated that the female victim is 32, and that the males are between the ages of 35 and 45. Police received numerous 911 calls Wednesday morning about an assailant attacking people with "a sharp instrument" they believed may have been a knife. The suspect was subdued by employees until officers arrived. That afternoon, a statement was issued by Ceridian, the parent company of Dayforce, whose employees were attacked. "At approximately 9:30 a.m. today, four Ceridian employees were attacked by a former employee at our Toronto office," said the statement from Ceridian CEO David Ossip and president Dave MacKay. While Ceridian did not identify the suspect or the wounded employees, the company said "the entire Ceridian family is shocked and deeply saddened by this incident." The suspect was not injured in the incident. Footage from outside the office building showed a man wearing a striped blue office shirt and dress pants being led into a police cruiser. Later Wednesday, police were seen towing a vehicle from the garage of the building.

The Canada Revenue Agency says it expects its website to be down until the weekend because of a security vulnerability related to the Heartbleed bug. The tax agency's website took away the public's ability to log in late Tuesday evening, which raised concerns about a the privacy of sensitive taxpayer data. "We are currently working on a remedy for restoring online services and, at this time, anticipate that services will resume over the weekend," the tax agency said on its website Wednesday afternoon. "The CRA recognizes that this problem may represent a significant inconvenience for individual Canadians who count on the CRA for online information and services. Recognizing this, the minister of national revenue has confirmed that individual taxpayers will not be penalized for this service interruption." The CRA also said it is checking to make sure no taxpayer information was compromised. "We continue to investigate any potential impacts to taxpayer information, and to be fully engaged in resolving this matter and restoring online services as soon as possible in a manner that ensures the private information of Canadians remains safe and secure, it said. The bug is a recently discovered vulnerability in a version of OpenSSL security software code that is installed on two-thirds of the active servers connected to the internet.

Heartbleed Bug May Shut Revenue Canada Website Until Weekend

A spokesperson for the Department of Shared Services responsible for federal computers said in a written statement that the Heartbleed bug "is affecting virtually all IT systems around the world." The Canadian government is checking all of its networks and fixing the problem as required, the official said. OpenSSL was believed to be comparatively safe and secure. But the Heartbleed vulnerability could allow a malicious user to read the memory of affected systems by mimicking the look of an authorized user, which would give the hacker access to sensitive information on any server with the buggy code installed. "Essentially, they'd get a second key to your house and can walk in whenever they want," technology analyst Carmi Levy told CBC News in describing the bug on Wednesday. "Right now, server owners around the world are busy fixing that. They're trying to patch a fix to close that vulnerability." There's an easy patch to fix the code, but it must be installed on systems retroactively. And it's very difficult to track whether any unauthorized users have accessed the loophole before it was fixed. The CRA's move affects online taxreturn filing services such as EFILE and NETFILE and also online access to account information for individuals and businesses. Revenue Minister Kerry-Lynne Findlay told reporters the agency learned of the website vulnerability Tuesday night and CRA officials worked through the night on the issue. "Obviously, we deal with very sensitive and personal taxpayer information on a daily basis and so we want, as a precautionary measure, to make sure that our systems are functioning and back up as soon as possible. We know it's a difficult time being tax-filing season for Canadians," Findlay said, adding, "We're on top of this." Asked whether Canadians who have already filed their tax returns should be worried about their information, Findlay repeated that the CRA shutdown was a precautionary measure and officials are "working on it." NDP attacks Conservative priorities The NDP attacked the government's response to the threat, saying it shows the government doesn't put a priority on management of public services. "The Conservatives are such poor public managers that they can't deliver the grain, they can't even deliver the mail and now at tax time they can't even communicate with Canadians through the revenue agency," NDP Leader Tom Mulcair told reporters on Parliament Hill. "They've made [public services] their lowest priority and it's not surprising that we see it breaking down." Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau called on the government to act quickly to solve the problem. "I think it's extremely important that we understand that security is not just

bricks and mortar any more," Trudeau told reporters. "Technology and information security is going to be a huge area of concern in the 21st century and we have to make sure that our various agencies, particularly ones dealing with sensitive data as the CRA, are keeping up with the need to protect Canadians in virtual ways, as well as the other agencies who protect us in physical ways, and I look forward to answers from the government in the days and weeks to come." The department of public safety first posted an advisory Tuesday warning of the OpenSSL vulnerability, saying the Canadian Cyber Incident Response Centre was aware the security flaw "could allow a remote attacker to decrypt secure (internet) traffic." The advisory said CCIRC, the agency within Public Safety that helps protect Canada's electronic infrastructure from cyber attacks, was recommending "system administrators test and deploy" security updates to "affected platforms." The U.S Department of Homeland Security issued its first advisory about Heartbleed on Monday. The 2014 deadline for personal income tax filing for the 2013 tax year is at the end of this month. The CRA tweeted a few days ago that 1,763 online returns were being processed per minute. More than 6.7 million Canadians have filed tax returns electronically as of March 24. That represents almost 84 per cent of returns.

Many Foreign Driver Licences Not Considered Valid Here

If you're visiting Richmond from three of the most populous countries in the worldChina, India and Indonesia, with a combined 2.75 billion people and planning to drive, think twice. A driver's licence issued by those countries isn't recognized as valid by the RCMP. And that means if you're pulled over, you're subject to a $276 fine, according to RCMP Const. Dennis Hwang, of the Richmond detachment's traffic section. It's an issue that local Mounties deal with on a daily basis, one made more complicated by the fact that the Insurance Corporation of B.C. isn't on the same page as the RCMP. The RCMP considers a foreign driver's licence valid only if accompanied by an International Driving Permit from a country that's signed on to the United Nations agreement, under which member nations can issue licences valid across all member countries. While most countries have signed on to the 1968 agreement, there are many that haven't. Aside from China, India and Indonesia, the list of non-signers apparently includes Mexico, South Korea, Spain, Iran, Chile, Thailand and Venezuela, among others. ICBC's perspective is different; an official driver's licence "issued by the People's Republic of China or any other country, is acceptable in B.C. for any visiting tourist up to six months," according to ICBC spokesperson Adam Grossman. He cited a Motor Vehicle Act section for exemptions, that includes full-time students in B.C. who study at a recognized institution. While the provincial insurer and Mounties don't agree on the issue, they're working to resolve the concerns. "We are aware that Richmond RCMP has raised concerns regarding some overseas driver licences and we are in discussion to try and assist them with this issue as quickly as possible," Grossman said Wednesday. "In fact, we met yesterday and have offered to share our expertise to help them validate licences at the roadside. Discussions to resolve this are ongoing." According to Const. Hwang, any RCMP jurisdiction in B.C., including Burnaby, North Vancouver and Langley, will interpret the law in the same fashion, and can at their discretion issue a ticket. Those who continue to drive without a permit, and have been ticketed twice, are flagged to have their vehicle impounded for future encounters. But if you go across the Oak Street Bridge from Richmond, the rules of the game change. The Vancouver Police Department is taking a slightly different stance on the issue. Const. Brian Montague said all foreign drivers licences will be accepted as valid in Vancouver, as long as they are accompanied by an ICBC-issued translation document. For foreign students, their homeland licences will be considered valid as long as they also have valid identification from an accredited school. So what's prompted this issue to come to the surface? According to Richmond RCMP Cpl. Stephanie Ashton, local police are encountering invalid foreign licences every day, and that's raised both public safety concerns, as well as hindered a police officer's ability to verify whether the person they've pulled over is who they say they are. Faced with a licence that's in a different language, a police can't ascertain whether the driver is even permitted to drive in their home country, or if the document is authentic rather than forged. For the general public, the issue could prove to create bigger headaches, Const. Hwang said. Imagine, for example, if a local resident was in an accident with someone holding only a non-recognized foreign driver's licence. If that foreign driver happens to be from a non-English speaking country, verifying the information from their driver's licence will present a challenge. Even in the case of a minor fenderbender, the police might be called in to assist when there's a language barrier or questions about identification, at which point a ticket might be issued to the foreign driver for failing to have an International Driving Permit. In Alberta, foreign drivers are only permitted when holding an International Driving Permit. The rules are different in Saskatchewan, which also has a provincial car insurer, and accepts foreign driver's licences, without mentioning any exclusions or the need for an International Driving Permit. What's also at issue is driving test standards in unaccredited foreign countries. From the RCMP's point of view, Hwang said the reason a country might not have signed the U.N. agreement is because of their sub-standard driving regulations in comparison to other countries.

Long-time couples may well finish each others sentences, but they cant read each others minds especially when it comes to retirement planning. This disconnect is something that Judith Cane, a money coach with Money Coaches Canada in Ottawa, often encounters when working with couples considering options for their retirement years. The wife might assume theyll sell the house and live close to their kids and grandkids, while hubby would rather buy a cottage and fish. She might expect to run her business and never fully retire, while he cant wait to ditch his job at 60. In one such case, a military husband, having travelled his whole working life, planned to spend all his time in Canada for once. His wife, however, had other plans for retirement. The spouse is like, What? Are you kidding me? Ive moved all over the place with you and now I dont get to choose where to travel? Ms. Cane says. You get couples who are thinking two completely different things. Like the first years of marriage or the months following the birth of a first baby, retirement can be a turbulent time that may test couples. There are changes to morning routines, identities are no longer tied to careers, and they need to get used to the idea theyre now living on a fixed income. No wonder bad retirement planning and lack of communication can drive a wedge between formerly committed partners and lead to costly financial errors, too. Luckily, if they avoid these mistakes, its possible to get a harmonious and financially comfortable retirement.

Four Retirement Mistakes That Even Smart Couples Make

Couple mistake 1. They procrastinate until the end The biggest mistake that couples make is they dont talk about retirement until theyre near it, Ms. Cane says. A retirement plan shouldnt just cover all the financial aspects of future lives together pensions, Old Age Security, a registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) or annuities but the social and emotional sides, too. How will you spend your days? Will you be together, or will you spend much of the time apart? Will you travel once a year or become snowbirds and head south each winter? Just dont wait to talk until youre about to leave the workforce, or you could be in for a rude awakening with little time to plan for what you both really want. Couple mistake 2. Only one half of the couple comes to planning meetings No one would let a spouse go to the doctor for a physical on their behalf (and lets face it, that would be just weird), but some people send their spouse to the financial planner with a retirement request: You figure it out. Big mistake, says Wade Baldwin, a certified financial planner with Sun Life Financial in Calgary, who admits he sees this scenario play out in his office. Both people need to be there and they need to know what is going on. These are important conversations, he explains. Besides the obvious you dont get a say in how you save for retirement theres another reason its a bad idea to allow your better half to make all the decisions and do all the planning: He or she might get sick or even die. Then what? It sounds terrible, but if the husband gets sick or dies, the wife is left without a clue of what to do because she was never involved in the process, he says. Fortunately, this financial arrangement seems to be going the way of the oncelucrative high-interest savings account. According to a Merrill Lynch report published in the United States last year, when making big financial decisions including retirement planning, couples are interested in a more collaborative partnership, with 73 per cent of men and 76 per cent of women stating they want to take equal responsibility. Couple mistake 3. You dont plan for speed bumps People get ill, lose their jobs, become disabled and get divorced. Heres something else couples might not consider when retirement planning: With two people in the equation, the possibility doubles that something bad will happen to at least one of them. Cleo Hamel, a senior tax analyst for H&R Block Canada in Calgary, says the best couple retirement plans are the ones that address potential personal calamities. What happens if one spouses passes away before retirement even comes? You have to sit down now and think about what retirement looks like on your own and with your partner, she says. That also means looking at retirement income implications if a spouse dies or the couple divorces. At present, the maximum earnings for Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and OAS is just less than $19,000 a person a year. Not a bad little income, especially if there are other savings, too. But lets say the couple divorces. The RRSP funds would be halved and CPP credits split. Never mind of the cost of running two households. Meanwhile, in the case of a death, the surviving spouse would lose the other persons OAS and potentially part of the CPP income. Considering that most living expenses remain fixed there are utilities, car payments and leaky roofs still need fixing the loss of income can have severe consequences. Couple mistake 4. You havent considered staggered retirement While younger people picture themselves throwing off works shackles in tandem someday, in reality, many couples decide to retire at different times. Staggered retirement can be a good financial decision. If one spouse works a few years longer, social security or company pension entitlements may increase. It also gives the couple a few extra years to save some retirement cash, or ride out a down market. The working spouse can also keep health, drug and dental coverage for a while longer rather than paying individual rate premiums. Even so, before deciding to go this route, its imperative that couples talk about all the emotional ramifications of retiring solo. Mr. Baldwin recommends that if one spouse is a decade older than the other, a little compromise might be in order. The older person could retire a couple of years later, while the younger one would leave work a few years ahead of schedule. Its about goal setting and working together, he says.

When many people think of insurance, they often think of the typical life insurance policy where benefits are paid to a surviving spouse. Critical illness insurance is known as a "living benefit" because it pays the policyholders a cash benefit if they are diagnosed with a critical illnesses covered by the policy. Common covered illnesses are: cancer, heart attack and stroke. Fortunately, due to medical advances in early detection and treatment, many of these conditions would have been fatal but now more of us are able to survive. For example, on their web site, the Heart and Stroke Foundation states that one person in four will suffer from heart disease, and 95 per cent of patients will survive their first heart attack. The Canadian Cancer Society also offers these sobering facts; one in three Canadians will develop cancer, with 60 per cent of patients surviving for more than five years after diagnosis. Getting and surviving an illness is not nearly as certain as death and taxes, but is it really something you want to

Critical Illness Insurance Important in the Event of Heart Attack or Stroke

roll the dice with when it comes to your finances? While critical illness insurance obviously won't protect you from getting an illness, it will provide financial support while you recover. The payments are often in a lump sum made payable directly to the insured and can be used for any purpose. Do you really want to worry about the mortgage or rent payments while focusing on your health? Many people buy critical illness insurance to help support them during two of the most common illnesses in our society, heart attack and stroke two symptoms of heart disease. Heart disease is not one condition, but really a group of conditions affecting the structure and functions of the heart. Coronary artery disease, for example, develops when fatty materials build up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. The arteries narrow creating strain on this system. A stroke is a sudden loss of brain function caused by the interruption of flow of blood to the brain or the rupture of blood vessels in the brain. Brain cells that do not receive blood flow begin to die and they do not grow back. You can lower your risk of stroke by keeping a healthy heart. Heart disease is preventable and manageable. The best defence is a healthy diet, not smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, controlling stress and getting physically active basically all the things our grandparents told us. They may not have known the medical facts behind the advice but their good old common horse-sense has stood the test of time. Heart attack and stroke are just a few of the illnesses covered by a critical insurance policy; there are many more. Fortunately, Canadians have a publicly funded healthcare system that covers the vast majority of costs associated with healthcare. Critical illness

Every child matures with her own unique experiences. Observing your little baby grow up to be a smart teen is a learning process in itself. But, sometimes parents tend to forget their role and blurt out things that can play havoc to the little ones self esteem. Parents seldom realise what their careless comments have done to their childs emotions. So, to help you never make such harmful comments we bring you a list of things that you should avoid saying to your child. 1. I was way more responsible than you at that age This comment breaks into your little ones confidence. You have to remember that you are a different person growing up in different times. Rather than this discouraging statement an encouraging advice would be so much more helpful. Also, remember to never compare yourself with your child and try to have no expectations towards them. 2. You always manage to do the wrong things and take the worst decisions ever. Your kid is growing up and there is no learning without a few mistakes. So dont criticise the mistakes instead encourage her to learn from them and guide her to follow the right path. 3. Do not disturb me. We all need space but sometimes your responsibility towards your child is more important. This harmless plea may be comprehended as neglect and a feeling of being unwanted can creep in making your child feel alone. Kids can even go into depression due to a comment like that. So next time be a little more careful. 4. You need to be more careful with

your friends; they are not good people to hang out with. Children dont make friends for their benefits. Their friendships are as innocent and their companionship means a lot. You must learn to respect your childs choice in friends. If you feel like they are in bad company, try to reason things out for them and guide them towards better people. 5. Learn from your friends / siblings. Comparing one child with another is the most unreasonable thing parents can do. Parents tend to generate a negative feeling for that particular friend / sibling with comments like these which can be harmful for their relationship. Remember that every child is different and it is your duty to respect and appreciate your childs qualities. 6. Id rather not have children than have a child like you. It cant get worst than this. As a parent you should never ever, for whatever reason make a comment like that to your kid. It could result in emotionally destroying your child. 7. You always succeed in hurting my emotions. Children cant always fulfill their parents wishes which result in unintended emotional pain. But rather than making the child feel guilty, reason things out and teach her how to be more careful the next time around. 8. Stop crying... Tears are a way of expressing what words cannot. When your kid cries it means something she is trying to tell you but cannot. Do not scold the kid rather, empathise and try to understand her feelings.

My daughter had her tonsils taken out last year. But she's started getting the same kinds of sore throats that she got before. Is it possible that her tonsils are growing back? Elizabeth It is possible for tonsils to partially grow back. During a tonsillectomy, most of the tonsils are removed. However, some tissue often remains, so tonsils can occasionally regenerate - although they probably won't grow back completely or to their original size. If you're worried that your daughter's tonsils are growing back, talk to your doctor. But just because she still gets sore throats doesn't necessarily mean that her tonsils are growing back. Tonsillectomies may result in fewer throat infections, but kids can still get some. Sore throats can also be caused by other things, like colds, allergies, and dry air. If you're looking for medical advice, a diagnosis, or treatment, consult your doctor or other qualified medical professional.

A Watermelon A Day Can Keep BP Away

Summer is here, so are watermelons. Do not miss to pick one today as a new research has found that watermelon could significantly reduce blood pressure in overweight individuals both at rest and while under stress. "The pressure on the aorta (largest artery in the human body) and on the heart decreased after consuming watermelon extract," said Arturo Figueroa, an associate professor at Florida State University. The study focused on 13 middleaged, obese men and women who also suffered from high blood pressure. The study started with a simple concept. More people die of heart attacks in cold weather because the stress of the cold temperatures causes blood pressure to increase and the heart has to work

harder to pump blood into the aorta. To simulate cold weather conditions, one hand of the subject was dipped into 39 degree water (or 4 degrees celsius) while the team took their blood pressure and other vital measurements. Meanwhile, the group was divided into two. For the first six weeks, one group was given four grams of the amino acid L-citrulline and two grams of L-arginine per day, both from watermelon extract. The other group was given a placebo for six weeks. Participants also had to refrain from taking any medication for blood pressure or making any significant changes in their lifestyle, particularly related to diet and exercise. The results showed that consuming watermelon had a positive impact on aortic blood pressure and other vascular parameters. Notably, study participants showed improvements in blood pressure and cardiac stress while both at rest and while they were exposed to the cold water. "That means less overload to the heart, so the heart is going to work easily during a stressful situation such as cold exposure," Figueroa said.

Do you eat, sleep and drink your mobile phone, literally? Limit your WhatsApp or Facebook urge as men using cell phones for over four hours a day are at a greater risk of impotency than those who use it for less than two hours, an alarming research has indicated. Two new studies in Austria and Egypt have linked daily cell phone use to erectile dysfunction (ED). The researchers believe the damage could be caused by the electromagnetic radiation emitted by handsets or the heat they generate. For the study, the researchers recruited 20 men with erectile dysfunction and another group of 10 healthy men with no complaints of ED. There was no difference between either group regarding age, weight, height, smoking, total testosterone or exposure to other known sources of radiation. Scientists found that men who had erectile dysfunction carried switched-

on cell phones for an average of 4.4 hours daily, whereas the men without erectile dysfunction averaged 1.8 hours. "Men who use mobile phones could be risking their fertility," said the researchers in a report published in the latest newsletter of Environmental Health Trust (EHT). A non-profit organisation, EHT focuses on raising awareness on the negative impacts of unsafe cell phone use and performing cutting-edge research on cell phone radiation. However, neither study found sperm count was affected. "Our study showed the total time of exposure to the cell phone is much more important than the relatively short duration of intense exposure during phone calls," the researchers noted. Since the preliminary study was smallscale, the researchers concluded that the results indicated a need for largerscaled studies.

A new research suggests that even modest elevations in the BP of adolescents can pose cardiovascular problems later in life. A systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies of the effect of child obesity intervention programs on blood pressure has found that whether such programs prevented obesity or not, many of them reduced BP in children. It also found that the most effective programs in this regard promoted both healthy eating and physical activity. The study, one of the first of its kind, 'Effect of Childhood Obesity Prevention Programs on BP: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis,' was led by epidemiologist Youfa Wang, MD, PhD, of the University at Buffalo and

conducted by researchers from Johns Hopkins University, UB and other institutions. "Of the 28 obesity interventions with complete data that we analyzed, 13 (46 percent) had a favorable effect on both adiposity and BP and 11 interventions (39 percent) had a significant effect on the reduction of BP, even if they did not affect adiposity," Wang said. "It is important to identify obesity intervention programs that can help children develop healthy lifestyles and keep BP at an optimal level, because these programs help them avoid many long-term health consequences," he said. The study is published online in the journal Circulation.

Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs May Help Men With Erectile Dysfunction

A new study has revealed that cholesterol-lowering drugs may help men with erectile dysfunction. The researchers found that statins are associated with a significant improvement in erectile function by helping blood vessels dilate properly and improving vascular blood flow to the penis. John B. Kostis, M.D., director of the Cardiovascular Institute said that the increase in erectile function scores with statins was approximately onethird to one-half of what has been reported with drugs like Viagra, Cialis or Levitra. However, Kostis added that larger randomized controlled trials are needed to further investigate the link between statin therapy and erectile function.

two or more diet drinks in a day increases the risk of heart diseases in older, but healthy postmenopausal women. In fact, compared to women who never or only rarely consume diet drinks, those who consumed two or more a day were 30 percent more likely to suffer a cardiovascular event and 50 percent more likely to die from related disease. Researchers analyzed diet drink intake and cardiovascular risk factors from 59,614 participants in the study, making this the largest study to look at the relationship between diet drink consumption, cardiac events and death. Information on women's consumption of diet drinks was obtained through a questionnaire that asked them to report their diet drink consumption habits over the previous three months. This information was assessed at follow-up year three of the study. Each drink was defined as the equivalent of a 12-ounce beverage and included both diet sodas and diet fruit drinks. For the purposes of the analysis, researchers divided the women into four consumption groups: two or more diet drinks a day, five to seven diet drinks per week, one to four diet drinks per week, and zero to three diet drinks per month. After an average follow-up of 8.7 years, the primary outcome - a composite of incident coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, heart procedure, ischemic stroke, peripheral arterial disease and cardiovascular death - occurred in 8.5 percent of the women consuming two or more diet drinks a day compared to 6.9 percent in the five-to-seven diet drinks per week group; 6.8 percent in the one-to-four drinks per week group; and 7.2 percent in the zero-to-three per month group. The association persisted even after researchers adjusted the data to account for demographic characteristics and other cardiovascular risk factors and co morbidities, including body mass index, smoking, hormone therapy use, physical activity, energy intake, salt intake, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and sugar-sweetened beverage intake. Women who consumed two or more diet drinks a day were younger, more likely to be smokers, and had a higher prevalence of diabetes, hypertension and higher body mass index. But lead investigator of the study Ankur Vyas, from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, said that the association between diet drinks and cardiovascular problems raises more questions than it answers, and should stimulate further research. "We only found an association, so we can't say that diet drinks cause these problems," Vyas said, adding that there may be other factors about people who drink more diet drinks that could explain the connection.

Waheeda Rehman 'Not Okay' With Making Film On Her Life

"Bees Saal Baad' and "Guide", and she has regaled audiences with her graceful dancing skills over the years. Biopics are a new trend in the Hindi film industry. So, asked if she would be fine with a film on her journey, she said: "I am (over) 75. Now it's a long journey...it has to be made in four parts. But personally, I am not okay with it." "I am not fine with it and there is no reason (for it) as such." In the last decade itself, the actress featured in movies like "Rang De Basanti" and "Delhi-6". Now she is happy away from the screen. "How much to work? We should give a chance to others as well. I don't miss anything...I am happy with myself. I travel a lot, read a lot, meet my friends, like to cook occasionally. I am satisfied with my life," said the veteran actress in an interaction at Sofitel, Mumbai. She launched "Conversations with Waheeda Rehman", a longish interview exploring several aspects of her life and career.

Will Govinda Sue The Man He Slapped In 2008?

A certain Santosh Rai, who was allegedly slapped by Govinda on a film set in 2008, has moved to the Supreme Court. A notice has now been issued against the actor. Will Govinda respond and take legal action? Santosh Rai came to Mumbai in 2008 with a dream to be an actor. Today, six years after facing a sorry situation, in which actor Govinda allegedly slapped him, on a film set. Rai states that the incident has ruined his life and he has decided to take a legal route until the case reaches its logical conclusion.I have been fighting this case for six years and I have spent Rs 5 to 6 lakh on lawyers fees. But I will not give up, maintained Rai who moved the Supreme Court and even issued a legal notice against the actor. Apparently, Bombay High court refused to hear Rais case since he appealed a year after the incident. The court sees Rais action as vindictive since it arrived very late. Govinda on the other hand, we hear, reacted in a rather aggressive manner on receiving the notice. I couldve sued him (Rai) after the Bombay HC quashed his case, but I didnt do it. Now he seems to be stopping at nothing, so I will have to think about it, maintained the actor in an interview.

Veteran actress Waheeda Rehman, who recently unveiled Nasreen Munni Kabir's book "Conversations with Waheeda Rehman", says she is "not okay" if a film is made on her life. The 76-year-old has featured in several Bollywood classics like "Solvaa Saal", "Pyasa", "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam",

Jeetendra To Receive Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Manoj Kumar Still Awaits One!
While the Jumping Jack will be receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year, Bharat Kumar is still waiting for his Raj Kapoor and V Shantaram, he has been ignored by the Dadasaheb Phalke committee year after year. He created the brand Bharat that is synonymous with him even today. If a personality turns down an award, the government hands it to someone else; this is not the right way to go about acknowledging talent. A deserving person should be given the award. Nadira, who contributed tremendously to Indian cinema, never won the award. Pran Saab was given the award just before he passed away. This is not fair. While we would like to congratulate Jeetendra for his win, we hope that Manoj Kumar too finds one coming his way. After all who can ever forget or replace Bollywoods most patriotic star. Veteran actor Jeetendra not only celebrated his birthday Monday, but is also rejoicing the Dadasaheb Phalke Award conferred upon him. On the other hand, Manoj Kumar is yet to be awarded with this prestigious award. And batting strongly for the veteran patriotic star is none other than superstar Salman Khans father veteran writer Salim Khan. While Jeetendra is gearing up for the mega event Indias highest cinema award and will have producer wife Shobha Kapoor by his side on stage, Salim Khan is sticking by Kumar to get him this much deserved recognition. Sr Khan said in a recent interview to a news daily, It is sad to see that despite winning appreciation from the likes of

Angry Salman Khan blasts students of Subhash Ghais Whistling Woods School Find out why! The Dabangg Khan was not in a good mood during his recent visit to Whistling Woods. Read on to know more
So Salman Khan visited Whistling Woods recently to meet Subhash Ghai. And from what we hear, the Dabangg Khan blasted some students, while he was taking the tour of the school along with the dean, Ghai. But why? Well, the story goes something like this Apparently, Sallu and Mr Ghai were walking in the corridors when the Jai Ho actor noticed four students sitting on a couch. Despite spotting the filmmaker and the star approaching, the four continued to sit and chat. This attitude of the students didnt go down too well with Salman. He considered this as a sign of disrespect. Phir kya hua? Khan went up to where the four were seated and told them sternly, Why cant you get up when your senior like Subhash Ghai is passing through? Khade ho jayo! I myself get up when I see Subhashji coming towards me. Obviously, the students were taken aback and started apologising to him. But that didnt calm Salman as he continued to say, Yahan chai pi rahe ho, lekin industry mein chai bhi nahi milegi agar badon ki respect nahi karoge toh! At this moment, the Taal director intervened to defend his students and said, I pass through so many times. How can they stand up every time when they see me? However, an angry Salman was in no mood to be pacified and chose to walk on. Well, we really dont know who is right here Salman or Mr Ghai?

Jeetendra, Happy Birthday!

Is Salman Khan Launching Katrina Kaifs Sister Isabelles Bollywood Career?

Kaifs sister is a part of Sallus first international production venture. Read on to know why we think Sallu wants to help ex-lovers sister Not so long time ago, Katrina Kaifs sister Isabelles upcoming film Dr Cabbies trailer was out. The film is Salman Khans first international production venture. On a closer look at the trailer, we saw that Isabelles name appears as Isabelle Kaif in the films credits. Well, think Katrinas younger sister is following her footsteps already by adding Kaif to her name. To those who dont know, Katrina was born as Katrina Turquotte and used her fathers surname Kaif only for her B-town career. In fact, the Dhoom:3 actor has even admitted that her father has had no influence in her and her siblings upbringing at all and she added Kaif to her name only for an Indian connect. Considering that Dr Cabbie is a Canadian film, it wouldnt have been surprising if Isabelle used her last name Turquotte, hai na? Then why did she add Kaif after her name? We think that Salman Khan might have had a say in it. Looks like Sallu wants to help his ex-flames sister launch her Bollywood career. Maybe Isabelle is looking for some Bollywood offers post Dr Cabbie and thats why she has already given an Indian connect to her name.

Born on January 7, 1942, Jeetendra Kapoor commonly known as the Jumping Jack of Bollywood turned a year older. Jeetendra is a successful actor and producer. Jeetendra will be conferred with the Indias highest award in cinema - Dadasaheb Phalke Award given annually by the Government. Ekta Kapoors daddy dearest has delivered hits for three decades. He began his career with Navrang in 1959 where he was cast as Sandhyas double. He was paired opposite Sridevi, Jaya Prada, Hema Malini, Neetu

Singh amongst others. Jeetendras popular films include Sanjog, Aulad, Majaal, Justice Chaudhry, Mawaali, Himmatwala, Jaani Dushman, Tohfa, Parichay, Kinara and Khushboo among others. Jeetendra married his childhood sweetheart Shobha Kapoor and has two children Ekta and Tusshar. While Tusshar is an actor, Ekta heads their Balaji Telefilms. On this day, Bollywoodlife wishes Jeetuji good health and happiness and a great year ahead!

Jodorowski'S Dune (G) **** Bold Vision!

Dreams die hard. Especially in the world of make believe. Countless people think they can make it in the movies - both in front and behind the camera. Disappointments are a dime a dozen in the harsh business world of Hollywood where people in the past have been taken advantage of. Courage is needed to stick it out. Brave Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowski had his mind set on make a film version of a Dune. Through the lens of director a Frank Pavich we are gifted to bear witness to one man's goal of turning an idea into celluloid gold. Brought forth by So y Pictures Classics and Mongrel Media this viewers' delight is transfixing audiences at the International Village Cinemas. If there's one thing that above all else will grab your attention in this documentary it's the sheer drive and determination of this man from Chile whose desire to turn a classic science fiction novel into a movie is downright inspiring and contagious. Going back in time you see the experimental nature of Jodorowski through clips of his earlier films. Then when he sets out to make Dune we are treated to a series of interviews with artists who were part of the process. Memories blur over time but the way this man essentially directed what should have been a monumental film on paper ultimately never got off the ground. Admirers of this fabled director reveal that many concepts designed by the creative team were actually ahead of their time, arguably making their way into successful modern day classics made by the likes of George Lucas and Steven Spieberg. Visually stunning and a feast for the eyes Jodowski's Dune is an epic vision that will only make you question just how superior this vision would have been compared to the Dino De Laurentiis/ David Lynch effort. Sit back and revel at this 90 minute movie that will leave you admiring Alejandro Jodorowski and his creative caring team.

Seinfeld And Veep Star Julia Louis-Dreyfus Has Posed Nude For The Cover Of Rolling Stone
JULIA Louis-Dreyfus is wearing absolutely nothing but the immortal words of Thomas Jefferson on our new cover, boasts Rolling Stone, dubbing the 53-year-old The First Lady of Comedy.
With the new season of her whip-smart HBO political comedy Veep underway, we couldnt agree more. In the issue, Louis-Dreyfus talks about her career evolution, from Saturday Night Live through Seinfeld and The Old Adventures of New Christine to Veep. She also talks about real live veeps Al Gore (who did win, by the way) and Joe Biden. The actress also addresses a common misconception about her that she is a billionaire by family fortune, thanks to her fathers wealth. Ive been attached to that, she tells Rolling Stone, clarifying that its her fathers business thats valued in billions. Its unbelievable, because whatever I do, people just assume its true."

How To Cover That Grey Hair Naturally Natural remedies can add shine and colour to your hair. Here's more on how
to do so... Going silver is in. Take actress Meryl Streep's salt and pepper mane in The Devil Wears Prada, or even Jamie Lee Curtis' cute silver pixie cut, or Emmylou Harris' chic grey look. But if you feel awkward about the greys, you can cover the strands up naturally. Here's how... Not a fan of the salt and pepper look? Try potato peel, black tea, henna and more to hide grey strands. Celebrity hairstylist Asgar Saboo reveals tricks to get natural hair colour back, says an agency report: Henna pack: To prepare the pack, collect henna leaves from henna plant. Then make a fresh paste of henna by grinding the leaves. Add three teaspoons of amla powder into it. You can also add one teaspoon of coffee powder. Take a small amount of curd and mix all the ingredients. Apply the pack on hair and leave it till it dries. Then wash it off with a mild shampoo. Potato peel rinse: Take around five potatoes and peel them. Put the peels in a cup. Take a pan and pour two cups of cold water then add the peels. Bring to a boil, lower the heat and simmer for five minutes. Place the pan away from stove and then let it cool. After it completely cools down, strain the liquid out and save it. Add a few drops of sandalwood oil for aroma and pour the cool mixture into a glass container with tight fitting lid. Use it as a hair rinse after washing your hair. Black tea remedy: Boil two teaspoons of tea leaves without adding any sugar or milk and let it brew. Take the tea water and let it cool till the water becomes darker. Then apply it all over your hair. Rinse it off with water. Don't use shampoo with the tea water. Coconut and lemon remedy: Take about six to eight teaspoons (depending on hair length) of coconut oil. Mix three teaspoons of fresh lemon juice in the oil and apply it on hair. Keep it for an hour and wash your hair with a mild shampoo. Some rules to remember: When hair loses its natural colour and turns gray, the hair cuticle also thins out. This is what makes strands rough, coarse and kick-starts breakage. Get back the soft tresses by doing this... - Always use a moisturising shampoo which can soften gray hair. - Only wash the mane with a shampoo that is equipped to deal with greys and counteracts effects of the harsh sun, hard water and other pollutants. - Use a smoothing conditioner or gloss to coat hair cuticles and protect them. - Don't over style grey hair or use dyers at high temperatures.

Relationships
Continued From Last Week 5. Get a second opinion If youre a little clueless or just want to make sure youre on the right track, dont be afraid to ask your friends for a few pointers. See what they think of the outfit youre planning to wear, or the venue you want to take your date to. It might mean you end up dodging the restaurant that gave your mate gastro last week, or that you avoid wearing that shirt all your friends hate. You know the one. 6. attention. Ask them about themselves and pay attention to their answers. And dont try to get a sneaky look at your watch or phone and that blonde sitting at the bar who you just checked out? Yep, they saw that, too. 7. Offer to pay If its a first date, it won't do you any harm to pay or at least offer. Quibbling with who should pick up the bill is a bad look and its hardly going to give the best first impression. Then again, remember its not the 1950s anymore, so its perfectly fine to level the score a bit if you end up seeing each other regularly.

Makeup Tips To Get Perfect Party Look

Make-up can make or break your party look. An expert says using products in the right proportion is the key to the best look. Makeover expert suggests some easy tips to glam up your party look. - A right start up for party make-up is as essential as its finishing is. Basic cleansing and moisturising of your facial skin is very important as it will give you perfect base after applying foundation of your matching skin tone. Leave it on for approximately half an hour to let it settle. - As soon as the base is done, apply the right shade of compact powder to set the base. It will also cover the madeup look of the foundation and will give you a natural look. - Illuminiser can prove to be a great product for party make-up. A basic cream illuminiser works best over all skin tones. To get the best out of it use it under the eyebrow bone. It will automatically enhance your features and will make your eyes look bolder. - Shimmer adds to your glamour quotient as it helps in highlighting your cheekbones. For fair complexion, hues of pink will work best, whereas wheatish complexion holds no limitations - a shimmery look goes very well with this tone. For dusky tone, metallic shades like bronze and gold are apt. - For highlighting your eyes use wide variety of eye liners of different shades like black, white, green and neon shades. Catty eyes are back in trend and to get it right, all you need to do is to create a base of nude eye shadow under your eyes and over eye lids. Apply eyeliner, outline your eyes with kohl and finish it off with two coats of mascara. - To get that perfect pout, outline your lips with a lip liner then apply two-three coats of wine shade lipsticks and voila you are ready for a rocking evening.

While consumption of fruits and fruit juices is said to be good for the skin, it is best to avoid oily and masala rich foods. While orange juice has been voted the best for skin, not many are aware of the benefits of coconut water when it comes to skin care. The liquid, considered the purest one after water, hydrates the skin, making it look more youthful and supple. Studies say that the antioxidants and cytokinins present in coconut water have an age defying effect on skin. The nutritious value of the drink has always been acknowledged. as an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Standard features on the base Sport include air conditioning, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, cruise control, push-button start, a USB audio input, and 17-inch alloy wheels (there are no steel wheels in the lineup). Get the automatic-transmission Sport and you add Bluetooth, HD Radio compatibility, and a rear-view camera system, with a 5.8-inch color touch screen. Touring models get dualzone climate control, a power driver's seat, blind-spot monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, rear-seat vents, leatherette seats, 19-inch alloy wheels, and the so-called Commander Switch with alternate controls for the screen. And at the top of the lineup, Grand Touring models add leather upholstery, heated

front seats, a memory driver's seat and power passenger seat, a fog lamps, steering-wheel paddle-shifters, satellite radio, a power moonroof, bi-xenon headlamps, LED running lamps, and adaptive front lighting. Both the mockiDrive Commander Switch and the TomTom navigation system are flat-out disappointing, with a laggy response to some of their features, poor map detail, and oddly coordinated menus. But the Bose sound of the 11-speaker premium system is excellent. Later in the year, a diesel engine will join the lineup; although final power figures and fuel economy figures haven't yet been released, it will make about 170 hp and more than 300 poundfeet of torque. It's also expected to top 40 mpg on the highway.

The 2014 Mazda 6 is a beauty, with refined, perky powertrains and a driving experience that mostly delivers on what the exterior suggests. The 2014 Mazda6 is proof positive of two things: that Mazda can scale its 'zoom-zoom' personality up into a midsize car, and that the company's core SkyActiv initiativeaimed at keeping cars lean and frugal yet engaging to driveworks. The outgoing 6 was an often-overlooked model that we've consistently rated one of the most enjoyable to drive models in its class. As for the current model, it's now one of the best-driving mid-size sedans, wrapped in a far more charming, almost sexy exterior. From the new corporate grille and front end (more of a refined, masculine face than the clownish smile of some other recent models), to the rippled, muscular-looking front fender lines, the arched roofline, and the smooth, surprisingly refined tail and rear lights, the 2014is just gorgeous. Pacing around at 360 degrees, it's impossible to find an awkward angle on this car. The proportions are the best they get in this class, and it's a knockout. Open the driver's door, and what you get is a little farther from fantasy. The Mazda 6 interior isn't going to flat-out seduce you the way the exterior does, but it's neat and quite attractive, with tastefully coordinated materials, just enough brightwork, and trims that place just enough soft-touch surfaces in the places where hands are likely to go Again perhaps at odds with the sexy sheetmetal, the Mazda 6 has a rather simple powertrain lineup; it's powered by a new 2.5-liter 'SkyActiv' in-line four-cylinder engine, fitted with direct injection, variable valve control, and a very high 13:1 compression ratio (unleaded gas is just fine)altogether making 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque, and good for up to 38 mpg on the highway. All versions have front-wheel drive, and the engine is fitted to two all-new transmissions: a six-speed manual, or

a six-speed automatic. But it does get better once you're behind the wheel. Mazda has cut lots of weight while strengthening the body, and with a curb weight of just 3,200 pounds the new 6 feels friskier than the output numbers suggest. The new SkyActiv engine needs to be revved in order to access most of its torque; luckily both transmissions tap into that character easily. For the automatic, you get crisp, very quick shifts and almost the feel of a dual-clutch unit; and the manual (our favorite) has short throws and clean, precise action. The Mazda6 isn't sport-sedan firm, yet it handles near the top of the mid-size class; steering is quick and well-weighted, too, although somehow it loses its feel of the road. If you've spent any time in the new Ford Fusion, or even the new Nissan Altima or Honda Accord, it's likely you'll concedelike we didthat the Mazda6's interior appointments aren't quite on the high ground that those models set. The seats in the Mazda6 are the exception. They're excellent, and even if you go for the base Sport model you'll find great lateral support. The rear bench seat lacks the headroom that taller adults need, and it's positioned quite high up. A roomy trunk and flipforward rear seats provide that extra dose of practicality that's now the norm for this class. In addition to all the usual airbags, plus stability control, and four-wheel disc brakes with Brake Assist, some Mazda6 models are offered with Blind Sport Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alerta system that helps spot cross traffic as you're backing out of a parking space, or warn of an adjacent vehicle when changing lanes. There's also Lane Departure Warning, and Forward Obstruction Warning, which detects vehicles ahead and sounds a warning; Smart City Brake Support is also offeredhelping prevent collisions due to inattention, at speeds between 4 and 19 mph. Adaptive Front Lighting and High Beam Control are also on offer. The Mazda6 also fits in among the safest models on the market,

Trevor Linden, Canucks President: 'I Want To Win'

Trevor Linden, the new president of the Vancouver Canucks says he is ready to start rebuilding a championship team for the city. Linden was named as the Canucks new president by the team owners on Wednesday morning, confirming rumours that had been circulating since former president and GM Mike Gillis was fired Tuesday. "I'm young. passionate about the team and I want to win," Linden told reporters at Rogers Arena on Wednesday morning. "At this time in my life, this is a great opportunity." he said. Team owner Francesco Aquilini said Linden will be making all the decisions regarding the team. "In his role, Linden will be responsible for all hockey operations, including the coaching and scouting staffs, player procurement and development, and minor league affiliations and operations." Trevor Linden's number 16 was the second jersey retired by the team. We believe in Trevor's leadership abilities. His 20 years of NHL experience including seven as team captain, his role as NHLPA President, community leader and businessman offers a very special skill set; one that will positively shape the direction of this club in the future" said Aquilini. Linden had denied the rumours as recently as Tuesday morning on live television, but was clearly on board Wednesday morning. Today is a real honour. I came to June. There are rumours swirling about who might take the job, including former Canucks' captain Markus Naslund, who recently stepped down as the general manager of MoDo Hockey in Sweden, Naslund denies rumours But Naslund has no NHL experience as a GM and has denied the speculation. Earlier this month Naslund told CBC Sports suggestions that he stepped down as GM at MoDo because he was heading to Vancouver were just rumours. "This has nothing to do with anything in North America," he said. "This is a decision made here a little over a month ago, that I was not going to sign another deal. I'm ready to do something different." "I can see why there is speculation. But there is nothing to the rumours." When asked if he was called, would he be interested, he said: "I don't know at this point. I had a couple of inquiries a year ago or so, but it made no sense for me or us as a family. I'm going to take some time... and see what I'd like to do. I'm not ruling out anything. I didn't take the job with MoDo with the NHL in mind. That was to help out an organization that was in rough shape." Naslund wouldn't reveal which team or teams approached him except that Vancouver did not. The former captain is still the Canucks all-time leader in goals, with 346. He's third in points, fifth in games played and his number 16 was retired in 2010.

Matas Laba suspended for Saturday's clash at the LA Galaxy (10:30 pm ET, TSN in Canada, MLS Live in US) after picking up two yellow cards over the weekend, Nigel Reo-Coker looks set for a return to the starting lineup. Still sporting a noticeable scar after tripping over a bike rack and hitting his head two weeks ago, the Englishman said following Wednesday's training session at the University of British Columbia that he is fully over the concussion he suffered during the fall. I'm not bothered, Reo-Coker said with a laugh when asked if he was selfconscious about the scar and if it would be a more permanent look. It's a funny story. It's life and these things happen. It's probably one of the craziest football stories now but it happened and that's it. It doesn't really bother me. Another thing Reo-Coker doesn't seem too bothered about is where he lines up this weekend against the Galaxy. 4-4-2 the last couple of matches, the player could slot into either the holding role as the deepest lying midfielder, or play on the right side of the diamond both roles he played at times under former Vancouver head coach Martin Rennie. Honestly, I don't have a preference, Reo-Coker said about the two roles. I'm comfortable in either position. I played the holding role a few times last year, and I played the right-hand side of the diamond last year a few times. They're positions that I'm comfortable in. The football knowledge I've gathered through the years has helped me be able to play in both positions. At the moment, we don't know what the team is going to be yet. The manager [Carl Robinson] still has got to make some decisions. As for his last two weeks watching from the press box, the 29-year-old claims it was a chance to step back vantage point, and he's not viewing his absence as time wasted. It's very hard, Reo-Coker said of watching from above. But sometimes back and analyze the team and look at certain aspects, and see where you would fit in and what you think of the team's performance.
