HISTORY OF HOTEL INDUSTRY

1. History of Hotel Industry The need for a hotel started when the Wheels were invented and roads started getting constructed for the movement of the army and traders. The early travelers were the warriors, traders and the people who are in search of knowledge. At that times there were no hotels or inns and people used to travel in horses and elephants .The traders often used to sell their valuable items for lodging and the warriors used to pitch their tents for accommodation and had their own garrison to feed them. In 6th century B.C the early hotels and inns were constructed to give shelter to these travelers. The hotels and inns used to be family enterprise and there was no privacy. People had to carry their own beddings and make their own bed. The food was just wholesome and healthy. . During 7th and the 8th Century B.C the monasteries used to provide accommodation and food to the travelers in Europe. But these monasteries were unable to provide accommodation to a large number of travelers due to less space. Hence requirement for larger and better accommodation arose. In 13th Century in Europe the nobilities used to provided food and accommodation in there manor houses which was free of cost. Most of the manor houses were changed into inns and hotels because the manor houses were charged with taxes. During 18th and 19th century In England and other parts of the world the industrial revolution came with the discovery of steam engine, which provided wide area connection by rail. Traveling and boarding became easier and at the same time affordable to a wider cross section of the community. With the invention of motorcars wide network of roadways were constructed. It enabled to visit those parts of the country which could not be traveled by railways. Americans started constructing such transit hotels which were called as motor hotels which provides accommodation and car refueling services. With the advancement of time Air travel came into existence and it helped to create business hotels and airport hotels designed to suit every need of the customers.

2. History of Hotel Industry in India In the early periods in India guest were considered as Athiti deva Bhava which means a guest is like God. The accommodation and food was provided by an individual or village bases and the hospitality was not organized properly. In India travelers were usually pilgrims, traders and scholars. The traders were provided accommodation at mansions of the nobilities and the pilgrims were provided accommodation at dharmsalas. students and scholars were provided accommodation in Taxila and Nalanda. In India inns were known as serais and with the starting of British Raj in India actual development of hotel industry took place with changing of serais dcor and type of food according to the liking of the British. Western style hotel were opened in different states of India like : 1. In 1840 Pallanjee Pestonjee opened a first luxurious hotel in Bombay and it was known for its cuisine beer and wines 2. In 1843 Auckland hotel was opened in Calcutta and later it was known as Great Eastern Hotel. 3. In 1871 Esplanade hotel was built in Calcutta with 130 rooms by the Britisher John Wakson 4. The Taj Group was founded in 1903 by JRD Tata and hotel Taj Mahal in Bombay was constructed under the flagship of Indian hotel company limited. Later on Taj group opened its branch in Goa, Varanasi, Delhi, Calcutta, Banglore and in abroad.

5. In 1956 Ashoka Hotel was build, and Dewan Lal committee was formed to 1.standardize hotel services 2. lay down criteria for classification of hotels. 3. For the promotion of tourism in india and abroad In 1962 hotel corporation and Tourism Corporations were formed due to the downfall of tourism activity and government known the importance of tourism. In 1964, three corporation were formed by the government of india : 1. Indian Tourism & Hotel Corporation. 2. India Tourism Corporation Ltd. 3. India tourism & Transport Corporation. In 1966 government of India merged the three corporation and formed India Tourism Development Corporation.
