EVALUATION OF I N VI VO ANTHELMINTIC EFFICACY OF SWERTI A CHI RATA (CHIRAYATA AGAINST GASTROINTESTINAL NEMATODIASIS IN GOATS
Investigations were conducted to evaluate in vivo anthelmintic efficacy of aqueous extract of seeds of Swertia chirata (Chirayata) against some of the most common pathogenic gastrointestinal nematodes such as Haemonchus, Bunostomum and Oesophagostomum spp. in naturally infected goats. The aqueous extract was administered at the dose of 550 mg/kg body weight, orally for 10 consecutive days in adult Goats naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes. The anthelmintic activity of S. chirata was compared with Albendazole (5 mg/kg, oral), a standard anthelmintic drug used in clinical practice. The anthelmintic efficacy of aqueous extract was assessed by determining the mean EPG count on day 0, day 3, day 6, day 9 and day 12 respectively. Examination of the fecal samples revealed significant and progressive reduction in the number of eggs in feces (EPG) from second post treatment day onwards and till day 12. The anthelmintic efficacy based on fecal scores in Goats treated with S. chirata and Albendazole on day 12 of the experiment was found to be 62.50% and 100%. The findings indicated that S. chirata exhibited significant in vivo anthelmintic efficacy against gastrointestinal nematodes in Goats.

Dinesh Jadhav 1
(Received on 17.12.2008)
Frequent ethnomedicinal surveys were conducted during August 2004 to March 2007 in different tribal inhabited villages of Ratlam District (M.P.). Result of these surveys indicated that 34 plant species are interestingly used for the treatment of urinogenital diseases prevalent in the Bhil tribe of the district. Botanical names followed by family, local names and the ethnomedicinal uses have been provided.
In the present study, aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Withania somnifera were screened for their hepatoprotective activity on paracetamol induced liver damage in albino rats. The percent hepatoprotective activity of Withania somnifera, in terms of three major enzymes of liver viz. SGOT, SGPT and ALP was found to be 91.30%, 77.77% and 65.4% for alcoholic extract and 74.08%, 68.92% and 53.75% for aqueous extract, respectively. The study showed that alcoholic extract of Withania somnifera was more effective than alcoholic extract but its efficacy was found to be lesser than standard hepatoprotective drug LIV-52.

PHARMACOGNOSTICAL STUDY OF ROOTS OF MERREMI A EMARGI NATA (BURM. F.) HALL. F. AND MERREMI A AEGYPTI A (LINN.) URBAN

(Received on 13.01.2009)
Merremia is one of the important genus of family Convolvulaceae and this family is known for the presence of glycosidal resin and its purgative property. Merremia aegyptia (Linn.) Urban and Merremia emarginata (Burm. F.) Hall. F. are the two plants of the same genus belonging to this family. The microscopic characters of Merremia aegyptia roots showed thick walled cork cells, small clusters of rosette calcium oxalate crystals and slightly larger xylem vessels than Merremia emarginata. The characteristic features of Merremia emarginata roots were one of two layers of suberized cork cells and uni or bi seriate medullary rays. The cells of cortical region were slightly polygonal to wavy in shape in Merremia aegyptia, while in Merremia emarginata parenchymatous cells of cortex region were polygonal to spherical in shape. TLF profile of Merremia aegyptia showed more intense and significant spots in selected solvent system. Both the plant extracts showed many common spots having similar R 1 and colour indicating more or less similar constituents but with different composition.

The anti-ovulatory activity of decoction of Butea monosperma (Linn.) Kuntze (Bacaceae) seeds and Daucus carota (Linn.) Var. sativa (Umbelliferae) seeds were studied in rats. The decoctions were administered to animals orally for 28 days. The vaginal smears were examined daily for the number and duration of oestrous and di-oestrous cycles. The oestrous phase was reduced while the di-oestrous phase was persistent and prolonged in both the treatment groups, thus revealing anti-fertility potential of these herbs.

(Received on 29.09.2009)
Siddha medicinal system is an ancient system, practiced for over 5000 years. Siddha experts indicate that Siddha formulations have been proved to be useful in controlling venereal disease (VD) including diseases closely resembling to HIV clinically. The drugs like Raca Kanti Meluka (RKM), Amukkara curanam (AC), Nellikkai ilakam (NI) and in combination of these drugs were reported to be useful in HIV patients for both clinical improvement and elevation of CD 4 counts. In the present study, an attempt has been made to develop Standard Operating Procedure for the preparation and Pharmacopoeial standards for Raca Kanti Meluku. The developed SOP and analytical standards can be used for fixing standards in Siddha Pharmacopoeia.
