Innovate and Incubate; the base-line for management learning in Business Design WeSchool, Bangalore is emerging as the innovation hub for Welingkar's management education programs. To nurture business leaders of tomorrow, Welingkar has set up a state-of-art campus in the heart of Electronics City, with the latest amenities and experienced faculty. Across the various management programs on campus, and more specifically for WeSchool's PGDM program in Business Design and Innovation, Welingkar attempts to inculcate learning in future business leaders by integrating Design Thinking and the Innovation process into mainstream management subjects. The class-room program follows a hands-on pedagogy to drive theoretical learning through live doing and learning projects. To facilitate the process of experiential learning WeSchool has set up an innovation lab, InnoWe, at the Bangalore campus. The objective of the InnoWe is to create a platform for all students, in the different streams on the campus, to explore, develop, and incubate their designs and business ideas. InnoWe is a place where students are encouraged to voice the weirdest of their ideas with assurance that these will be allowed to germinate, cross-pollinate, and get fertilized. It is the hub of ideas for business concepts of the future. InnoWe is the hotbed of a host of activities on campus, including project display exhibitions, idea contests, concept shows, rendezvous with innovators, toymaking and film-making contests, design round tables, and so on. The facility enables students to brainstorm, create, and share their design and business schemes with colleagues and faculty, as well as with industry advisors and mentors in order to take their ideas forward to maturity. InnoWe will evolve into a place where student entrepreneurs will gravitate to. A Prototype Lab is also built on campus as an extension to InnoWe, where the students can build their concepts. The students would experiment with their ideas and concepts, and WeSchool's PGDM program in Business Design and Innovation will be a key user of InnoWe and Prototype Lab. This program is one-of-its-kind in Indian management education. Business Design & Innovation integrates design thinking and innovation with mainstream management principles, to explore human needs, possibilities, and business opportunities of the future. Design thinking with its adaptive and integrative approach provides a way to convert imagination into reality. The Business Design manager uses his/her trained unique abilities to see corelations across diverse domains, uses intuitive skills for unbiased observations, adopts a highly user-centric approach, and relies on quick prototyping to validate his/her ideas. A merger of the intuitive approach of a designer with the analytical approach of a business manager has given birth to the term Business Design. build, test, and validate them before some of them can be incubated for market-worthiness. With this, a full ecosystem for next-gen business models will be fructified, beginning from the class-room, going through InnoWe and Prototype Lab, and incubated into new innovative businesses.

D-Magics
Since 2006, design thinking and innovation were brought into the MBA curriculum which has proven to be a sort of ground-breaking contribution to management education in India. Design is a thinking process that is applicable to all man-made creations; whether it's a business model, product, service, process or strategy. It is a process that leads to human centered innovation. Design thinking needs to be adopted into the mainstream thought process in all functional streams and at all levels in an organisation. With this objective WeSchool organises D-Magics every year at Mumbai and Bangalore campuses. D-Magics is (i) a concept show of innovative prototypes by our students and faculty for various industry verticals and social arenas as well as the industry showcasing some of their innovations (ii) will be a dialogue between the leaders and management representatives in organizations and practitioners of design to explore a magical change in industry and society. Hence the event has been named as D-Magics: Design for Management and Growth in Corporations and Society. The concept show will be exhibited all across our campus and will be an outcome of a six months exercise by students and their faculty mentors undertaking identification of latent needs, field research, concept generation, business case validation, prototyping and refinement. These concepts will be from the verticals of Social entrepreneurship, Agri business, Healthcare, Banking & Financial Services, Fast Moving Consumer Goods, Retail, Information Technology, Telecom, Media, Entertainment, Advertising and Manufacturing. The outcomes that are anticipated will be to identify and solve problems and fuel growth in the social sector and corporate sector. This programme will be attended by top level executives from the corporate sector, mentors to student projects, Government officials, Students & Faculty of many other business schools in India.

Mashup
Mashup', An innovative Platform That Brings Startups and Students From Diverse Backgrounds Together Today's management education scenario must change by breaking the silos, thereby creating opportunities and communities that nurture a better future for people in all parts of the global economy. Having realized that, Welingkar began their journey on an untrodden path that not only Indian but universities and scholars internationally were slowly beginning to think and talk about. Thus the path of 'Design and Innovation' was set to Redefining MBA education at WeSchool. WeSchool believes in training its students to become corporate thought leaders with global mindsets and at the same time motivates them to become daring entrepreneurs who will take on the challenges thrown up by accelerated globalization, fast changing technologies, demanding clients and unpredictable socio-economic-political situations that the future has in store. Getting that higher post or a bigger salary package cannot be the only career goals of a young management student, he should be able to look at life that is beyond the horizon at the moment and visualize as to how he can become an employer instead of an employee. After all how many young managers will really be able to get that job offer with a salary package of one crore? expressed Dr. Uday Salunkhe, Group DirectorWelingkar Education, at the inaugural function. Speaking about the relevance of an event, Dr. Uday Salunkhe, Group Director, WeSchool says, The idea behind Mashup is to put budding entrepreneurs and startups through the experience required to create executable business plans. There are many entrepreneurs with innovative ideas or products but lack in scientific knowhow of creating a profitable business plan or are not sure how to approach the market. This platform will ensure that these startups get the required push in the right direction. It also gives students a chance to showcase their talent in front of the right audience and bear fruition to their dreams of setting up their own businesses. WeSchool believes not only in training world class corporate managers but entrepreneurs as well. That is why this competition is kept open for graduate as well as post graduate students so that they are able to met up with innovators, partner with them by polishing their own skills and get started on the paths of realizing their dreams of entrepreneurship.

Memetics Club
Memetics is an emerging field of study that explores the relationship between cultural trends and business opportunities. Participants discuss socio-cultural trends that could define the way corporates do business tomorrow.
Prarambh - Bengaluru
At Welingkar our life revolves around discovering, researching, erring & succeeding. We toil with ideas in an effort to germinate them from seeds to sprouts and from sprouts to trees; trees that grow big and strong and yet have their roots deep and firm in the soil. This thought has given birth to Prarambh, the E-Cell at We School, Bangalore.
Insight Lab
Insight lab helps corporates and students develop a strategic approach to innovation. It blends conventional and nontraditional methodologies to identify latent needs of human beings and create offerings around these needs. The lab aims at creation, development and pooling of knowledge along selected verticals. The aim is to generate insights, design and create innovative products/services or innovative business models, which can be made applicable to the corporate world.
We think not of ourselves as scientists trying to incubate, but rather as naturalists who try to cultivate. We believe that Entrepreneurship is a spirit and it can be inculcated in every individual irrespective of the choice of career or work. We endeavor to create an environment conducive to experiential learning. This matches our approach of 'design thinking' in the field of management education. It provides students a great scope for Innovation, which in turn provides the ideal launch pad for their entrepreneurial ventures. This ideology is reflected in the very design of the campus at Bangalore, where every classroom has the eco-system of an innovation lab. The eco-system includes aspects like completely flexible seating, allowing for the classroom to extend beyond the four walls. In addition regular visits and interactions with business leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators and designers help to provide the students with the required direction to their limitless thought process.

Few of the experts who have visited the campus and addressed our students are as follows: Swamy Parthasarthy The course on the Art of Self Management has been introduced as part of the curriculum. The course is based on Vedanta, an ancient philosophy of India. It attempts to infuse amongst students the eternal wisdom into modern life for peaceful and productive living. Swamy Parthasarathy, a pre-eminent philosopher, after decades of intense research, pioneered practical techniques of Self-Management. He has founded the Vedanta Academy to impart Vedanta knowledge to young students from all over the world. The students are exposed to lectures by Swamy Parthasarthy and also the alumni of the Vedanta Academy. Topics such Stress Management, Relationship Management, Ego, Qualities of a leader, Elements for Success, etc, are discussed. The focus is to impart practical techniques of SelfManagement to increase productivity, reduce stress and develop the essential components of leadership amongst students as the foundation of business management is self-management. It Dr. Stanley Ridgley Assistant Professor, General and Strategic Management, at Fox School of Business, Temple University, holds a Doctorate and Masters in International Relations from Duke University and an International MBA from Temple University, Fox School of Business and Management, with a focus on Russian Business Culture. Management Students Rendezvous with 'Bollywood' at WeSchool
Management Education has changed over the years with emerging unarticulated needs, realities, limited resources, globalization, environment issues etc which needs a new approach both in terms of thought as well as action. WeSchool strongly believes in integrating the philosophy of Leadership & Innovation with a design-thinking approach into management education. To enhance the learning in the classroom, a blend of case-studies, scenario planning, role-plays, audio-visual material and experiential learning methods are used in addition to the conventional classroom lecture method. Teaching through theatre, literature, poems, films, and book reviews have been a popular medium to connect with students to teach several management & leadership principles which makes learning more experiential and fun as well. B-schools and companies have realized how theatre-kind of training can develop various attributes among individuals and can determine group dynamics. At WeSchool we are going one step further by integrating theatre and literature (particularly serious fiction) and helping our students to not just learn from the unique pedagogy but by selecting such stories whose characters are often non-conventional leaders that teach many lessons on decision-making. While students engage in storytelling, they also are guided to delve on the dilemmas in the stories that involve ethics, change management, adversity management etc. The personalities from Bollywood shared their experiences with the students and faculty; be it Production, Direction, Script writing, Music, Dance, Acting each of these aspects had tremendous learnings for Business Management Students to enhance their professional approach.

Centre For Management Development And Continuing Education
Whether driven by the changing market dynamics, the desire to stay ahead of competition, to grow further in the organisation or to take the business to the next level, an increasing number of senior managers and executives are enrolling at themselves for executive education courses at reputable B-Schools such as WeSchool. We also see a lot more younger employees joining corporates with aspirations of moving up the career ladder quickly. At the same time, organisations need able leaders at all levels to align with the company's growth strategy. These intersecting interests are driving the creation of more executive education programs customised for the organisation's needs. Executive education at WeSchool is via customised programs tailored to suit the specific needs of corporates as well as open-enrolment programs for individual employees/professionals who wish to qualify themselves and enhance their knowledge and skills with all the time constraints they have at work- typically, for those who cannot spare 6 days a week for a 3-year part-time program of the University. The curriculum is upgraded year after year and, with best of faculties and infrastructural support, the participants come out more confident, more proactive and so more useful to their organisations.

Productizing Innovation in India for Global Markets -WeSchool, Bengaluru coducted a seminar on Productizing Innovation in India for Global markets, sponsored by Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). The participants included senior product managers from multi national corporations in India. The topic was appropriate as many Indian firms are now developing products for the global market. Further to this, in the last two decades, Indian products have carved a niche for themselves in the global market. Businesses from India are taking the global stage on the strength of their success stories. The workshop was meant to bridge the talent gap in product management and marketing. There were 4 esteemed guests who spoke on the topic and gave valuable insights. Mr. Sridhar Jayanti's (Senior VP of Engineering and Managing Director McAfee) initiated the workshop. His topic was Product Innovation in India for Global Markets. Mr Sridhar's talk started with a pertinent question - what it takes to innovate in India. He elaborated this by saying that products created in India were primarily due to the physical and economic conditions of the country . The second speaker was Mr. Vivek Kumar of Paypal who spoke about design thinking for product managers.
According to him, design thinking was combining creative and analytical thinking and applying it toward solving a specific problem. Mr. Venkat Venugopal (Head, Development RM, R&D, Ericsson Chennai), brought in the R&D perspective to the seminar. He begun with the history of how R&D off shoring began in India in the pre 1990s and has evolved to the current times where cost arbitrage is not the point but value creation is. The final speaker of the day was Pinkesh Shah, Head of Adaptive Marketing. He shared how 'productizing' was now possible in India. The process that Pinkesh charted out began with market analysis to strategic planning to product planning, going to market and finally sales enablement. He then went on to highlight the role of an engineering leader (who owns the complete process of creating value) and the role of a product manager (CEO of a product). India is now the global product hub as it has the second fastest growing GDP in the world.

MIT Scholar brainstorms with students about Design thinking in technical innovation
Prof. Ramesh Raskar, Associate Professor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and head of the MIT Media Lab's Camera Culture research group had an insightful discussion with students at Prin. L. N. Welingkar Institute of Management Development (WeSchool) on the topic, Design at Scale: A New Paradigm for Tech Innovation on November 01, 2013. Prof. Ramesh Raskar engaged in an engrossing session with students from various b-schools, design schools and medical institutes on the application of design thinking on scalable technology innovation, framing the discussion around his latest invention eyeMitra, a Mobile Retinal Imaging and Predictive Analytics solution. Through the session he elucidated on the need for a linkage between various streams of work. He enunciated on how constant communication and cooperation between various streams like management, engineering and design will lead to differential innovation. The session was in tandem with WeSchools focus on design thinking. It concurs with their constant effort to guide its students to break out of the conventional framework and to come up with pragmatic innovations for socio-economic needs. Understanding the intricacies of the complexly drawn up economy has helped WeSchool to transform itself into a b-school with design thinking at its core. Appreciative of WeSchools leaning, Prof Ramesh advised the students to focus their energies on devising solutions for socially relevant problems that will help the common man in various aspects of life. He also spoke about how the MIT Media Lab's Camera Culture research group has pioneered in innovation and idea generation through an amalgamation of professional culture and various field of work for broader perspective and clarity while innovating. While concluding, he requested the audience to never stop ideating and to take action on the problems they face on a day today basis, but first to interact and brainstorm with people from different backgrounds to discern social issues and to craft solutions that address it efficiently, economically and quickly.

I can only confirm that the project is going well and that we are making good progress. The WeSchool student -from the very start - was very motivated and hard-working (he still is). I did not expect such great commitment (to be honest) and therefore are really happy with the way things are going. The intern displays a very good basis of analytical skills and questions things before he proceeds with a task - a quality I sometimes did not find when working with other Indian MBA students. Also, he is very eager to learn and to absorb new things. Overall, I am very happy with his performance and can only recommend him to all potential future employers. Mr. Mathias Imbach

Each of these round tables allowed the alumni to discuss their experiences after their Welingkar education. The students could therefore learn what mistakes to avoid and what areas to focus on in terms of their education and practical experiences. It was not just an experience meant for students. Welingkar also learnt about what changes or improvements could be made to suit the changing environment in these sectors. In the Financial Services Round Table for example, sales as a profile in the insurance sector and the student misconception and dislike over the acceptance of the same were discussed. Alumni gave a lot of ideas to the college as to what activities should to be undertaken to groom students so that they are ready to face corporate life. Many suggestions like, undertaking Excel training for students, training on valuation models, certification courses like CFA, etc were well noted. Similarly, the discussion in the Media Round Table revolved around Industry structure and its robustness and also the roles available for graduates from various business schools in the sector. Another valuable point of discussion was what is needed by a WE School graduate to capitalize on the various industry offerings? The alumni also spoke about the practicality that one needs to have when entering the industry. They also discussed that in an industry like the Media one needs to be really passionate as there is a lot of struggle and ground level work that is necessary. The Alumni Round Tables therefore proved to be an overall learning experience for not only the students but also the management and the visiting alumni.
Mr. Ridham Desai Designation: Managing Director, Head Equity, Morgan Stanley India Company Pvt. Ltd. Batch MMS (1990-92) Students of Welingkar had an opportunity to have an enriching interaction with their esteemed alumnus Mr. Ridham Desai, Managing Director & Head of Research - Morgan Stanley India. Mr. Desai was accompanied by two other Welingkar alumni; Nillai Shah & Anosh Koppikar, who work closely with Mr. Desai. Mr. Ridham Desai's address to the students was primarily on the Global Financial Melt Down, reasons for the same and the road ahead towards recovery. He highlighted the shortcomings in the global financial system and innovative financial products, which got converted into a bubble and eventually led to the financial crisis. He also shared with students, his perspective on the recovery measures taken by central banks across the countries and the impact of these measures. In terms of the role of emerging economies, he discussed the impact of Chinese demand and supply dynamics on the global economy. He also described India as a potential high growth economy highlighting the positive characteristics of India, as Demographics, High Domestic Demand & Young Work force. Towards the end of the session, Mr. Desai addressed students' questions which further helped the forum to develop a perspective on the global financial markets.
