Subject: Electricity Generation during the month of January12 and during the period April11- January12. HIGHLIGHTS The electricity generation in the country during the month of January12 has been 73395 MU with a growth rate of 2.43% corresponding to generation of 71654 MU during the same month last year. The growth rate during January11 was 9.65%. The reduced growth rate (2.43%) during the month was due to less growth rate of nuclear generation (3.47%) and negative growth rate of hydro generation (-5.07%) and negative growth rate of gas based generation (-13.92%) (excluding liquid fuel and Diesel) in comparison to corresponding month last year. The cumulative electricity generation during April11 - January12 was 727427 MU with a growth rate of 8.59 % over same period last year. During April10-January11 the corresponding growth rate was 5.18 %. The electricity generation during January12 was 100.02% of the program. For the period April11- January12, it was 102.11% of the program. Although availability of coal for power sector continued to be critical input for thermal generation growth, the generation from coal based plants improved on account of improved supply of coal. The thermal power stations received about 36.0 MT of coal against the requirement of 39.1 MT during January2012. It was about 92% of the total requirement of coal during the month. The coal stock of 39 TPS were critical (less than 7days) on 31th January2012. Out of these 21 TPS were having coal stock of less than 4 days. Coal based plants in the country have achieved a growth rate of 6.27% during January12 over same month last year. The actual generation from coal based plants exceeded its program by 1133 MU(2.18%). Cumulative generation of coal based plants during April11-January12 has also achieved a growth rate of 8.94% over same period last year. The electricity generation during the month from nuclear plants was 136.59% of the program for the month. The growth rate of nuclear generation has reduced to 3.47% as compared to 78% during January11. The cumulative electricity generation during April11 January12 from nuclear plants was 126.75% of the program. The growth rate of nuclear generation was 29.31% with the corresponding period last year.

Due to less inflow, the generation from Hydro Plants had a negative growth rate of 5.07% during the month of January12 corresponding to generation during the same month last year. However, the generation from hydro power plants for the period April11 January12 has achieved a positive growth rate of 17.38% as compared to 8.92% achieved during the corresponding period last year. The PLF of thermal stations during January12 was 76.38% in comparison to 80.17% during January11. The reduction in PLF was due to less generation by some stations due to various forced outages, transmission evacuation problems, coal shortages, less demand etc.. The PLF% of Central sector stations during January12 was 86.39% as compared to 90.96% last year. The PLF of state sector thermal plants and pvt sector IPP had also reduced by 1.63% and 10.76% respectively as compared to the same month last year. However, the plant load factor of Pvt Sector Utilities slightly improved from 62.88% to 63.15% in comparison of last year. Four Nos.(4) of coal based thermal plants station achieved PLF of more than 100% during January12, while 30 numbers of coal/ lignite based stations achieved PLF% of more than 90%.. Five Nos.(5) of gas based stations had during January12. achieved PLF of more than 90%

It indicates that: The gross generation of the country during the month has achieved growth rate of 2.43% as compared to the corresponding month last year. Gross monthly generation in all the categories viz: thermal , nuclear generating stations, import from Bhutan (except hydro) have indicated positive growth with respect to the same month last year. The gross monthly generation of the country during the month was 100.02% of the program for the month. The reduced growth rate of gross generation during the month was due to less growth rate of nuclear generation (3.47%) and negative growth rate of hydro generation (-5.07%) and gas based generation(-13.92%) (excluding liquid fuel and Diesel) in comparison to corresponding month last year. The actual generation during the month from thermal plants was less than the program (1.24%) for the month. However, it has achieved a growth rate of 3.31% in comparison to the corresponding month last year. The actual generation during the month from nuclear plants has also exceeded the program (36.59%) for the month. However the growth rate of nuclear generation was 3.47% in comparison to the corresponding month last year. During January11 the growth rate of nuclear generation was 78% due to commissioning of new units at Kaiga and improved availability of nuclear fuel. The generation from hydro power plants has negative growth rate of 5.07% in comparison to the corresponding month last year due to less inflow.

It indicates that: Gross monthly generation of all the categories viz: thermal, nuclear and hydro generating stations (except import from Bhutan) have indicated positive growth rate over same period last year. Gross cumulative generation of the country during April11- January12 was 102.11% of the program. It has achieved a growth rate of 8.59% over same period previous year. The actual cumulative generation from thermal plants during April11January12 was 98.72% of the program. It had achieved a growth rate of 6.37% over same period previous year. The generation from Nuclear based plants was 26.75% higher than the program during the period under consideration (April11-January12). It has achieved a double digit growth rate of 29.31 % over same period last year. The generation from hydro based plants was 17.62% higher than the program during the period under consideration (April11-January12). It has achieved a growth rate of 17.38 % over same period last year.

A. Thermal Generation performance: Regionwise performance The thermal generation during January12 had achieved a generation growth rate of 3.31%. The growth rate of thermal generation was maximum (11.19%) in the Northern Region. The thermal stations of Northern and North-Eastern Regions exceeded their generation by their respective targets. However, the generation from the thermal power station during January12 was less than their respective generation targets in Western, Southern and Eastern Regions. Generation from the thermal power station during the period April11-January12 had an overall generation growth rate of 6.37%. The generation from thermal power station located in Northern, Western, Southern and North Eastern Regions exceeded their respective generation targets. On the other hand generation from

the thermal power station located in Eastern Regions was less than their respective generation targets. The above tables indicate that: The thermal generation during the month was less by 791 MU to the program by (1.23%). It has achieved a growth rate of 3.31% in comparison to the corresponding month last year. The PLF of thermal stations during January12 was 76.38% in comparison to 80.17% during January11. The PLF of coal based thermal generation has reduced to 76.34% in January12 and 72.42% during April11-January12 against PLF of 80.36% in January11 and 73.93% during April- January11. The reduction was mainly due to less generation by some units for various reasons like transmission evacuation problem, less demand, coal shortages and other forced outages etc. Coal based plants in the country have achieved a growth rate of 6.27% during January12 over same month last year. It exceeded its generation target by 1133 MU. Cumulative generation of coal based plants during April11-January12 has also achieved a growth rate of 8.94% over same period last year. There was increase in coal based generation during the month of January12 due to improve availability of coal supply. During the month 92 % of the total requirement of coal was available. The thermal power stations received about 36 MT of coal against the demand of 39.1 MT. Loss of generation of about 547 MU due to shortage of coal during the month of January12 alone has so far has been reported. Loss of generation due to shortage of coal during the period April11- January12 of about 8360 MU (as per the information received so far) has been reported. Loss of

generation due to poor/wet coal quality during the period April11January12 of about 3075 MU (as per the information received so far) has been reported. Loss of generation due to Low system demand (including Reserve shutdown) of thermal units during the period April11- January12 of about 4400 MU (as per the information received so far) has been reported.

A statement indicating the thermal generating stations suffering shortfall in generation exceeding 100 MU during the period April- January12 along with the reasons thereof is attached at Annex-I. Availability of Coal: During the current financial year 2011-12, the anticipated gap between the requirement and availability of domestic coal was estimated around 54 MT. Out of 54 MT, 35 MT of coal was to be met through import of coal, for which all the utilities have been advised to take necessary action and rest 20 MT of coal was the requirements of power plants designed on imported coal. The status of import of coal by various utilities (as on the last day of January12) is given in Annex-II. The coal stock position at various thermal plants continued to remain critical. The coal stock of 39 TPS were critical ie less than 7days, on 31st January2012. Out of these 21 TPS were having coal stock of less than 4 days. The main reasons for coal shortages are inadequate receipt of coal, huge outstanding dues , higher generation etc. Best Performing Power Plants: During the month of January12, 30 numbers of coal based TPS with an aggregate installed capacity of 28600 MW achieved PLF more than 90%. The list is enclosed at Annex-III. Four (4) thermal power stations mainly, KAKRAPARA (440 MW), GH TPS( 920 MW), SIPAT STPS(2320MW), Torangallu TPS (260 MW) achieved PLF more than 100 % during January12. Among them KAKRAPARA (440 MW) had the highest PLF of 101.5%. Gas based Generation : In view of the increased generation from hydro, nuclear and coal based plants leading to low schedules for gas based generation coupled with the problem of gas supply shortages to various gas based stations, the gas based generation had a negative growth rate of 13.92% and 4.72% during January12 & April11- January12 respectively corresponding to the same period last year. Total Loss of generation during the month December11 and April-December11 alone due to short supply of Gas was 1247 MU and 5108 MU respectively (reported so far). The Liquid fuel based stations had a negative growth rate of 73.24% and 52.54% during January12 & April11- January12. Average %PLF achieved by the gas /liquid fuel based plants during January12 further reduced to merely 54.55% against PLF of 65.55% achieved during same period last year. Region-wise average PLF of gas based power plants is given in Annex- IV. Average PLF of gas plants located in the Southern Region was the lowest during January12 at 50.65% against

PLF of 60.03% achieved by the gas plants located in the Southern Region during the same month last year. Ten (10) numbers of gas based power stations having aggregate installed capacity of 2897 MW operated at PLF above 80% during the month of January12. Among these, three power plants is under Central Sector, Four power plants are under State Sector Utilities and three power plants are under Pvt. Sector Utilities.Trombay CCPP of 180 MW capacity had achieved PLF 102.41% during the month. The details are given in Annex V. Nuclear Generation During the month of January12, generation from nuclear plants exceeded its target by 97 MU. The nuclear generation was 2903 MU against the target of 2806 MU during the month, representing an achievement of 136.59% and a growth rate of 3.47% with respect to nuclear generation during same period last year. During the month, the average PLF of all nuclear plants was 81.66% against 81.72% achieved during same period last year. PLF achieved by Kakrapara APS was above 100%. PLF achieved by Kakrapara APS, RAPS and Tarapur were 101.5%,94.33% and 90.02% respectively during January2012. Hydro Generation The energy generation from the hydro electric stations (excl. import from Bhutan) during the month of January12 was less by 0.04%. than its target The hydro generation had also a negative growth rate of 5.07%. This was due to reduced inflows during the month. During the period April11 to January12, the cumulative hydro generation was 114734 MU against the target of 97547 MU registering an achievement of 117.62% with respect to the generation target. Hydro generation during this period has registered a growth of 17.38% over the same period last year. Region wise details are as follows:-

During January12, import from Bhutan was 135.83% of the program. It was 126.32 MU against the target of 93 MU. During April11-January12, import from Bhutan was 5182 MU against the target of 5554 MU which is 95.03% of the program. The storage position of the 31 major reservoirs in the country is regularly monitored in CEA. These reservoirs feed hydroelectric stations having total installed generating capacity of 18,273 MW which constitute about 49 % of the hydro capacity in the country. The total energy content of 31 reservoirs as on 31st January12 was 17877 MU as compared to 19816 MU last year. It is 6% less energy content at FRL on the same day last year. The storage position of these reservoirs as compared to that obtained during the previous years is shown graphically below:

During 2011-12, share of energy generation from these reservoir based plants was 44.2 % in terms of total annual hydroelectric energy generation in the country. The storage positions of each of 31 reservoirs in the country and corresponding energy content as on 31.01.2012 along with the comparison of the same with the last day of January11 are given at Annex-VI & VII.
